This is the best virtual reality movie so far! Lawnmower Man, Matrix, Tron, Johny Mnemonic and many other movies - Ready Player One takes all the best qualities of them. So bright reality, so strong plot which is unlikely for that kind of movies, no dull moments at all - full of action from the beginning till the end. 11 of 10! Now I will definitely read the novel.

p.s. If you are gamer I bet my last pair of pants you will love this movie

p.p.s. I see some negative reviews - this is from people who read the book. Seems its quite different from a movie, I cant blame them - I didn't like Warcraft and Ghost in the Shell for the same reason. But if you haven't read the book yet, believe me, you will like this.

Before you read this, I DID NOT READ THE BOOK, so this is based on the movie itself.

To be quite honest, there was a lot of hype surrounding this movie with a pretty exciting trailer. I looked at that trailer, and came to the conclusion that it could go one of two ways. The film could be really good, or it could really suck and all the references would be gimmicks. Well, to be honest, I really enjoyed the movie. I felt the story was great with the shift to and from fantasy and reality. I loved the fact that I caught so many easter eggs along the way as well. I loved that it incorporated nostalgia and friendship into one movie, and those battle scenes though. I liked this movie so much it even brought a tear to my eye at one point. I feel as if this movie is something everyone can enjoy. Take your significant other, parents, friends, etc. to see it. I'm sure they'd love it as much as I did.

I suspect the critic-haters were too much in their head to let it move them. The theme? Friends and real-world group effort are worth sacrificing for and even dying for. A wonderful theme for tweens, teens and 20-somethings. This theme plays against the backdrop of a world the grownups have stopped managing well or managing at all. Sound familiar? I think this is how the last few generations perceive life (maybe the Parkalnd , FL teens can get them more engaged in real world group effort to pass gun laws). If you liked the emotional quality of this, BFG (Big Friendly Giant), Spielberg in his British guise, will liekely appeal to you, another under-appreciated work of filmic-storytelling-art.

I did NOT find Spielberg obsessing over 80s images; or, trying to re-capture his own childhood as reviewers conjecture. The look and feel is spot-on for the story being told. This is professional-grade visual storytelling, pure and simple. I've now reviewed the changes between book and movie. Holy Cow, they made a lot and I think except for the final end scene have improved the film significantly.

To be honest, if I didn't have Moviepass, I probably wouldn't have seen this in the theater, but I'm so glad I did.

Spielberg has recaptured the old magic he had with films like Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark. This movie is straight-up fun. The entire virtual world in this film looks great, is inventive, and feels fully realized. (Heck the real-world dystopian future also looks pretty nice.) It's also a lot funnier than I expected too.

Yes, a few parts are rushed, some parts of the future world leave you asking questions, and a coupld of supporting characters are introduced too quickly and weakly, but ultimately these are minor issues compared to the strength of the film.

I highly recommend this.

Bought the movie when it was on sale, and just watched it in 2020. Boy, what a blast! If anything, the  movie improves on the book, in my opinion. If anything, the  movie improves on the book, in my opinion. The story is simple enough, but isn't it true for 95% of movies and books, if you only consider the plot? The plot of Pride and Prejudice can be summed up in a couple lines, but it's the characterization that matters. In this case, the highlight is the homage paid to pop culture in the 80s, nostalgia lane for me and many others. The huge number of references makes up at least half the movie; if this turns you off or you couldn't care less, then I suggest you just watch something else. The rest is a thrilling chase for a mystery buried deep in a world wide VR simulation, that will bestow real world power on the one to unravel it.
People complain that the action sequences are confusing. Uh? Since most are set in VR, it only makes sense that everything is more bombastic than it is in reality (the action scenes in reality were much more sedate), and yet I had absolutely zero problems discerning what was going on at any given time. The characters are relatively simple, true - just like the one in the first Star Wars. Since when is it a problem, for a film that does not aim to be a psychological masterpiece? I was hooked by the action and by the masterful description of this dystopia where VR is the only escape for most of the populace - and at least for the poverty part, it does not sound too far fetched, considering the ongoing trend for the wealth divide between the top 10% earners and the rest.
In my opinion, the real reason most haters bash the movie is that it does not bow down to SJW zealotry. "What? How dare Spielberg cast nerds in a positive light? He should make clear that nerds are only losers who harass women! Whaaat? The protagonist is male and his (super badass) female partner openly tells him that he is the most qualified person for the task at hand? No way, every single movies must make clear that grrls are better than boyz at everything they do and some! And where is the required homage paid to homosexuals, with the canonical same-sex kissing? Where are the non-binary people? We need to review bomb this movie, it's toxic!".
Either that, or they complain about the changes made to adapt the book for the big screen (different media, different requirements, I see a lot of respect for the source material) or they really don't dig the 80s references. If that's the case, yes, they watched the wrong movie, but why pick THIS one, among 10.000 others?

TL;DR: if you love video games and 80s culture, if you enjoy a lot of action going on and can accept a straight white male protagonist who is not deeply flawed on every level, go for it. If you have read the book and the idea that the quests are different incenses you, you also may want to steer clear.

Nevertheless, I must say: Not everyone will like it, partly because it's loud, complex, and exceptionally fast-moving. My wife asked me if she would enjoy it, and I had to say... probably not.

Nevertheless, If you're up for a rich cinematic experience and some visionary thinking about the future, this is your flick.

Ready Player One is the first movie I've seen that I would consider a good "video game movie". The references are tasteful, the animation is fitting and gorgeous, and the action is solid. The social commentary about large corporations (presented through EA- I mean IOI) taking over/monetizing games was fantastic. Although some of the characters could have been more developed, along with the real world, neither of these aspects were bad, and therefore don't really change my view on the film. The story line blew me away and by far exceeded my expectations. As of this writing, I have yet to read the book. This contradicts my usual procedure of reading the book before seeing the movie, but since many people who have read the book didn’t like the film, I am glad I strayed from what I usually do. I loved how the plot line had unexpected twists and turns, an aspect of movies that, if nonexistent, I am completely unimpressed. Ready Player One was the exact opposite, keeping me on the edge of my seat for the duration of the whole movie. I also enjoyed the references the movie made to other films, such as The Iron Giant and Star Wars. I happily give Ready Player One five stars, and definitely recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good film. Expand

I'll start with i have read the book,I personally think this was a brilliant movie, the acting was a 9/10 and the story 10/10. If you're not a gaming or anything 80's fan miss this movie as you'll probably give it a negative review.
The main problem i keep reading in reviews is, that wasn't put in and this wasn't put in the film. What people have to understand using characters in a book is totally different than in a movie, their things called licences which cost a ton of money and with this movie costing 175 million to make as it is, how much more needs to be spent to make everyone happy. Does everyone really think Blizzard let Spielberg use Tracer and D Va for free, plus all the other licences which were needed just to make this.
People seriously need to get a grip and review this movie as a movie and not as a book

So back to the review. The acting was hit and miss, some of the acting was great and some really didn't suit the character. visually it was epic and just sitting there trying to spot nostalgic characters, movies and games from the 80's and upwards made it even more enjoyable, I think i spent most of the movie saying "oh looks it's".

Overall - Yes the book is better, but when have we ever seen an identical port from book to film. However, this movie stands fantastic on its own whether it was based on a book or not

At every moment the movie bombards you with references of electronic entertainment, videogames, animation and other typical elements from 90's to 2000's. captures all the feelings and experiences of communities, developers, events, players, besides showing cameos of characters that do not usually include in movies of this theme, jargon of gamers, easter eggs, pop culture, wow is impressive.

Personally, the fans and there is nothing more to add to the excellent CGI, very careful and colorful. Actually the argument remains as an impulse for everything really important. Beautiful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so firstly i'm gonna say was the book better? Well they had a lot more time to flesh out characters and tell the story etc.

Did it feel like the main characters fell in love to fast? I mean maybe but bear in mind wade is a teenager and a female showed mild interest in him, on top of that he knew of her before as he "saw all her walkthroughs and twitch streams" so he had a crush, due to circumstance they spend a lot of time together and nearly die.

Okay now that's out the way - It was just a FUN movie, I found the idea appealing of a fully realised VR world that everyone is on and a big company tries to fill it with microtranstions and the gamers coming together to stop it a cool idea, I loved the real world stuff going on of the real world being **** and the idea of a "resistance" and companies going as far as to essentially enslave people to play a game in the loyalty centers and the idea of a creator hiding a meaning of life so to speak into the game before he died, also intriguing as to if he was "alive" in the game as he was far to smart to be a A.I. I could go on but frankly I would just suggest giving it a watch yourself, as I personally, loved it.

Im reviewing this movie as a movie and not comparing it to the book like every negative review on here. This movie is amazing, its visually stunning and the soundtrack is so good. I really enjoyed the story line and characters as they are very much a gift from Steven Spielberg with that Spielberg magic. There is NOTHING wrong with this movie. This is why 10/10 times I never go by others reviews and I will walk into a movie and make my own judgment. Some people will not like the movies I like vise versa. I would say to anyone leaving a negative review because you read the book and your upset the book is not like the movie I would try to realize that there are lots of book to movie adaptations that are not like the movie. The author and Steven were the writers and worked together on the script. There are some elements that just dont work from book to movie. The book is very dark in lots of way from what im hearing so they had to change that to make it friendly to everyone. Honestly its a VERY well made movie. Expand

But I was wrong. As senior citizens, my boyfriend and I enjoyed the premise very much along with the references from the late 70’s to 80’s, which we lived through. I can see how a society who’s depressed and discouraged would use a fantasy world to escape from reality. Yes, this film is why we go to the movies. It was entertaining! Expand

He returns'Ready Player One' is the most entertaining, most fun, and most visually stunning movies in 2018, and I loved every minute of it. Directed by Steven Spielberg - at 71 years old - he shows that he hasn't lost any of that old magic. He returns to thrilling sci-fi adventures where a group of young kids explore a world of wonder and endless possibilities. The year is 2045, and like most recent Hollywood blockbusters, the future is doomed. We meet a young boy named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), he says his name is like that because his deceased father thought it would be like a cool superhero name like "Peter Parker" and "Bruce Banner" (and the references don't stop there). Due to society being so stricken and misery populating the world, he often escapes into the virtual reality world known as "The Oasis". The VR goggles enter him into his Avatar named "Parzival", and the world of the Oasis is absolutely crafted in such a stunning way, you feel immersed and almost lost in its universe. The great mind behind the virtual world of the Oasis is James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who developed this feature over a decade before, to stop people from focusing too much on the harsh and economically struck reality, and escape to a world where they can feel free to be whatever they want. However, since Halliday died a few years back, he posted a video stating that he has left an Easter Egg somewhere deep within the Oasis, and that there are three keys to collect, in order to retrieve the egg. It's a race, and everyone begins to compete. And it is there that we meet our main antagonist of the film, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) who wants the egg for himself so that the Oasis can belong to him. And he will stop at nothing to make sure that he gets there first. Spielberg adapts this novel from Ernest Cline and uses many of the pop-culture references well... from "Back to the Future", "King Kong" to "The Iron Giant", they're all in there for a reason. Not to add to our nostalgic enjoyment. This is Steven Spielberg's most exciting adventure since 'Minority Report' (2002), it's fast, always moving, and you're never bored watching it. I felt like a child again watching this movie as it's been so long since Spielberg has made a blockbuster movie. Yes, I absolutely loved 'Lincoln' (2012) as well as 'Bridge of Spies' (2015), but 'Ready Player One' is what Spielberg used to be, and he should continue to make more films like this. I can't wait to see it again. Expand

My head is still spinning - not just from the tremendous action scenes, but the whole experience. A job well done, Mr. Spielberg and team! One note - when I heard that the Iron Giant was going to be in it, I cringed because that is one of my all time favorite movies. Whenever you see a movie with high user ration and low critic rating, there is something afoul. It's either the fans being too optimistic or the critics are picking some idiotic flaws.

For this movie, it has to be the critics. This movie is... awesome. It does a incredible job at capturing the feeling and joy of classic and current character. Without spoiling anything past what the trailers have shown, you will see Iron Giant, Mobile Suit Gundam, and even Mecha Godzilla. I went to dinner with my friends after the movies and we actually had to google all the cameoes to see if we caught them all. Obviously, we only got like 60 compared to the 120+. Beyond the cameos, there is a great story lead with great acting. The CGI is superb; I'd argue it's better than movies like Avatar. There is a lesson in this movie that I feel like the younger audience should really accept; that is, you don't know the face behind the computer. With that said, there was one flaw, that neither I, nor my friends could ignore. One supporting character viewed herself as ugly. Yet, she is amazingly gorgeous, but supposedly, a birthmark made her ugly? It just fell flat! They should have just gotten someone ugly (subjective, i know) to drive whatever point they wanted to get across.

What I like: the villain, the music, the delivery and actors, they are very good mostly. What I did not: love story was too quick.
There are a lot of references from games and pop culture, the ending is OK, but I enjoyed and would happily support it through buying it. They were cool surprises and weird moments and comedy was well done. Probably the best game related movie I have seen.

Ready Player One is all what i needed and could hope for in a compilation movie of the best of best franchises.

if you read the book, you might not like this, according to every other person. i havent read it and probably will not read it. i dont care if its different because i have nothing to compare it to. its well worth a watch.

Good riddance,Weird Spielberg who makes great Oscar movies for a gold living (Lincoln,The Post) and welcome back,Spielberg who makes adventurous movies (Raiders Of The Lost Ark, Ready Player One and ET).
Now that I got that out of the way, let's start the review!
You know what's the scariest thing to exist after you walk out of a movie whose franchise is a great big success? Making your own opinions while comparing it to other existing products. That's what Ready Player One made me think after the credits rolled, even if I had a big smile of satisfaction (no,I'm not counting the IMAX too),and that's what fears me the most, since my opinion can hurt someone, but here we go:
I think Ready Player One is a more incredible movie than The Incredibles and more “Crossover-ific” than The Avengers.
LET ME EXPLAIN.
Sure, part of me was smiling at the references (Minecraft of all people,Halo, Overwatch…),but I was surprised by how some of the Easter Eggs were part of the story (Chucky being a toy a-la Terminator,The Iron Giant being upgraded etc.),as well as Spielberg actually caring about the source material, something I expect out of existing properties like this or the recent Black Panther, where if a less-talented director would've done this or that,it could've gone both ways.
Here we have a movie whose director does what he can to serve a well told story, with characters you’ll definitely root for (for the most part) and lots of references that,in part, are actually relevant to the story instead of being Captain America in a chair saying “I understood that reference” or Tony Stark saying “That dude's playing Galaga!”.
As for the characters, they give you just enough to make you care about them, except for James Halliday (the creator of the OASIS,played by Oscar winner Mark Rylance),whose writing is certainly better than Steppenwolf from Justice League, but still not enough to make you say “I wonder what he does next…”, although I give Spielberg & Co. credit for actually trying instead of making it this 2D character.
The technology used for this movie is definitely something to praise.
Trust me when I say “If you'll see it in IMAX 3D,you'll think Doctor Strange was just a little kid's dream afterwards with the headache-assured visuals”,because, while some of the moments have generic action set pieces, they roll as fast (and furious) as one of those Star Wars attractions at Disneyland.
Everything is so frenetic and exactly paced, you'll be in for a 2h 20m Rollercoaster, with the runtime being solid.
I even liked Alan Silvestri’s score here, and while it has the flaws (trying to be hip-and-cool with the 80s? Here we go…), it's filled with goofy yet emotional moments.
So...Yeah,I'm in a Mad Max Fury Road (or Spider-Man 2) status now, where I can't recommend it enough just because of how it was a good time at the movies (again, not counting the luxury of IMAX 3D),so I definitely give it a thumbs up. WAY UP. Ready Player One is bound to be of the most iconic movies for this generation's kids thanks to Spielberg's egregious directing, stunning visuals and a good yet charismatic story. It's not one of Spielberg's best, but it's almost there, since its way better than The Post.

It has received somewhat "mixed" reviews from the critics, but you got to have at least some knowledge of what videogames are to completely understand and appreciate it, and that's precisely what some critics lack. Besides that, it is a great experience, spectacular, funny and entertaining so for me it's a must see, and even a must-rewatch, as someone else has already said. Expand

Графика была на высоте, хотя в некоторых местах был виден хромакей. Я конечно не понял работу оазиса в реальном мире, хотя было сделано все логично. Пожалуй это самый лучший фильм в начале года. A very cool VR world that will hopefully come along in real life in the near future. Many many Easter eggs and video game characters throughout keep all gaming fans happy as to see if their favourite might come about. A great soundtrack to go along with great action sequences make for a really good time at the movies. First half of the movie I though was better than the second half however the ending is still quite good. I never read the book so I cant compare it to that but as a whole this movie is a really fun time. Expand

It's a freaking geek fest! A visualization to the wild dream of my childish self. A world I have imagined many times in my life, even before the movie.

If not, better not waste your money and get information in pop culture.
It’s a excellent cinematographic piece full of entertainment and fun. Digested and exciting thought for all generations, but still teenagers and young adults did not understand.

A exceptional visual experience. I love both the historical and more recent pop culture references throughout.

I could’ve not been more entertained when watching this film, there are next to zero sluggish moments and parts will you will turn your head way. Although the casting could have been better, this movie still has parts where you will go “wow” that’s some really good acting. But apart from that, Ready Player One is absolutely beautiful because of the gorgeous CGI this movie has to offer. The Story (the most important aspect) is very well thought out, but with that comes some confusion and parts that will have you maybe asking your friend what’s going on; other than that: the story is very good and very fun. “Ready Player One” would fall under the “Amazing” category.
