Idea begins like in One Piece: A pioneer died has left behind his legacy with a quest. Then a classic abatement on the one side the protagonist versus the other side the bad guy who wants to commercialize the idea from his former employer.

Set in the year 2045, the world is plagued by climate change and overpopulation, causing people to seek refuge in the virtual reality world of the OASIS. After its creator, James Halliday, passed away, he hid three Easter eggs within the virtual world, with the prize for finding them being control over the OASIS and a vast fortune. Wade Watts, an 18-year-old "Gunter" (egg hunter) and his allies, as well as the nefarious Innovative Online Industries, led by Nolan Sorrento, compete to find the eggs. The film is filled with pop culture references and CGI, but the story and characters are thin and not particularly engaging. The actors, including Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, and Ben Mendelsohn, give solid performances, but the romance is forced and the villain is cartoonish. The visuals are spectacular at times, but the final battle becomes tedious. The references and nods to pop culture are fun, but ultimately the movie is just an average, CGI-filled adventure with a thin story.

Valerian Downgrade. I can't believe Spielberg made it. It contains a proper and overflowing homage, dedication and love for popular culture, but the set-up holes that are clearly seen everywhere can't turn my head.

I remember watching and enjoying virtual reality based kids TV shows and films like Tron as a young child. This film, however, didn't really bring anything new to the genre. It's full of visual effects/CGI and I remember thinking it's a little like a teen version of The Matrix type film almost...not as exciting or philosophically challenging though, certainly. I lost track of the supposed plot after not very long. I enjoyed the battle/chase scenes and its somewhat entertaining but it isn't really a film that grabbed me, or caught my interest at all really. I wouldn't recommend it, no. Expand

Decent plot, decent casting (the black girl should have been absurdly attractive in order to make a certain reveal/joke way funnier than it was... she was... not), highly recommend it to anyone over 30.

a much MUCH worse "sword art online".

It has all the faults of a typical hollywood action movie: based on a tried and tired formula, no character depth, no character arcs, lots of "explosions n stuff", very bad camera work, lots of pop culture references, and oddly too low on imagination.

It is baffling how a story that is set in 2045 has all its pop references in the 80s: all the music you hear, the movies and actors and directors they hint on, even the games they refer to are atari games! It is obvious this movie is based on the imagination of an 80s boy, with 80s nostalgia.

That could be forgiven if the story telling was actually good. The movie starts with a LONG exposition narration, that TELLS you who everyone is, who the baddie is and who the good guys are, how the world functions, and all the boring stuff. After that (since the viewers are obviously bored) we switch to a long mindless action scene which is supposed to look cool but actually games in 2010 had better graphics than that. Basically the virtual world of the movie passes as if u r watching a very long cutscene in a videogame and you are not even playing. You are just being bored out of your mind.

The cardboard characters are so one-dimensional that the writer didn't even bother with giving them an arc. They just go around, do stuff, find the macguffins, defeat the boss, and that's it, game over.

After the movie finishes in the most anticlimatic way, you might only have one question, and that is how a person who made "schindler's list" makes sth as horrendous as this pickle 15 years later.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pretentious is the word that first springs to mind when I remember this movie exists. Movie misses the mark on what the target audience is. So MANY pop-culture references from the last few decades-ish, but feels like a young-adult sort of movie. The references are excessive, manipulative, and in your face. Did not believe the plot at all with there being any probability of gamers not finding these secrets after several years because speed-runners exist. Let's be real here; people learn how to be the best at several video games without financial gain - the amount of time it would've taken for someone to figure these obstacles out would've been much much shorter, especially with the incentive of owning the VR world. I digress; message of the movie is heavy-handed, and honestly not believable either in the film's setting. "Hey go outside, sometimes good things happen; look at me," the protaganist says ruling the VR world with a new attractive girlfriend. It's pretty obvious as to why people like the VR world - they live in a slum. Overall, it was a very run-of-the-mill adventure film. With the pop-culture references to overcompensate for it, it also ended up feeling disingenuous. I know I will be in the minority here, but if you didn't like Avatar (2009), you will definitely not like this movie either. Expand

I have say I think Spielberg did a great job in adapting the story to the big screen. Everything really trots along at a fast pace and there were loads of game/movie references to enjoy which makes it worth repeat viewing. I am glad they changed the bits they did; a fast cgi car race to open the movie was a much better idea than showing the protagonist playing joust, and did we really want a segment of him reciting the script of "wargames" to win the second key? As it's Spielberg it never got too violent and we were always reminded the "deaths" were taking place in the safety of Oasis. Overall a really good popcorn movie, and a great adaptation that kept the essentials from the book whilst improving them for the screen. An extra point for not bashing me over the head with SJW propaganda, which has sadly been the case with a lot of the movies/tv shows/games I've seen in the last five years. Expand

If anything, the  movie improves on the book, in my opinion. The story is simple enough, but isn't it true for 95% of movies and books, if you only consider the plot? The plot of Pride and Prejudice can be summed up in a couple lines, but it's the characterization that matters. In this case, the highlight is the homage paid to pop culture in the 80s, nostalgia lane for me and many others. The huge number of references makes up at least half the movie; if this turns you off or you couldn't care less, then I suggest you just watch something else. The rest is a thrilling chase for a mystery buried deep in a world wide VR simulation, that will bestow real world power on the one to unravel it.
People complain that the action sequences are confusing. Uh? Since most are set in VR, it only makes sense that everything is more bombastic than it is in reality (the action scenes in reality were much more sedate), and yet I had absolutely zero problems discerning what was going on at any given time. The characters are relatively simple, true - just like the one in the first Star Wars. Since when is it a problem, for a film that does not aim to be a psychological masterpiece? I was hooked by the action and by the masterful description of this dystopia where VR is the only escape for most of the populace - and at least for the poverty part, it does not sound too far fetched, considering the ongoing trend for the wealth divide between the top 10% earners and the rest.
In my opinion, the real reason most haters bash the movie is that it does not bow down to SJW zealotry. "What? How dare Spielberg cast nerds in a positive light? He should make clear that nerds are only losers who harass women! Whaaat? The protagonist is male and his (super badass) female partner openly tells him that he is the most qualified person for the task at hand? No way, every single movies must make clear that grrls are better than boyz at everything they do and some! And where is the required homage paid to homosexuals, with the canonical same-sex kissing? Where are the non-binary people? We need to review bomb this movie, it's toxic!".
Either that, or they complain about the changes made to adapt the book for the big screen (different media, different requirements, I see a lot of respect for the source material) or they really don't dig the 80s references. If that's the case, yes, they watched the wrong movie, but why pick THIS one, among 10.000 others?

TL;DR: if you love video games and 80s culture, if you enjoy a lot of action going on and can accept a straight white male protagonist who is not deeply flawed on every level, go for it. If you have read the book and the idea that the quests are different incenses you, you also may want to steer clear.

ALso the characters like Halliday and Wade are just as interesting here as they are in the book, while people like Ogdenmorrow or the Twins fall a bit flat, but that doesn't really matter, it's still a great videogame movie with interesting and entertaining concepts! So I finally got around to see 'Ready Player One' and it was a perfectly fine. It's got some cool set pieces and the first race scene at the beginning was a chaotic thrill ride.

I've been hard on Steven Spielberg recently as I'm not always sure why he directs certian movies, and my perspective still hasn't changed yet.

Tye Sheridan is more indie than a leading man in a massive blockbuster. Great actor, but the directors he's been working with don't know what to do with him. Olivia Cooke entire character conflict with her appearance because of a birthmark on her face was laughable. Like she's freaking gorgeous. It's shameful to see The Iron Giant being turned into a killer weapon despite going against the powerful message in his own movie.

It's bloated, but still pretty enjoyable.

JustThis movie was dumb, but cool. It had a stupid story with dumb characters, but I can’t help it, I’m a sucker for huge franchise crossover event films like Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Wreck-It Ralph, and The LEGO Movie (the Batman one too)! Just seeing all these recognizable characters on screen all at once is great to have! I could rewatch this movie 5 times and still not catch them all! The animation was really well-done, but the live-action segments felt very dull in comparison. The comedy was hit or miss, but the action was thrilling! If you love pop culture, you’ll find at least some enjoyment in this movie. There is something for everyone here. As a whole, the movie is only okay, but I think that fact alone makes it one of the best book-to-movie adaptations ever made! The fact that director Steven Spielberg was able to make a decent movie out of a book where half of it was just the author listing things that he likes is AMAZING!! It’s worth a watch! Wreck-It Ralph and Scott Pilgrim vs The World are better, though. Expand

Still this movie was fun to watch. I've read the book dozens of times so I have to say it's one of my favorite books, primarily because I grew up during the 70s and 80s, so it really is nostalgic. Yes there is a lot of creative liberty taken in making this film. The general basis of the story is there. Granted, I loved the book more but this was still a fun film.
Equipment: AV-Receiver Arcam; Lautsprecher: Dynaudio; TV: Panasonic

What I like: the villain, the music, the delivery and actors, they are very good mostly. What I did not: love story was too quick.
There are a lot of references from games and pop culture, the ending is OK, but I enjoyed and would happily support it through buying it. They were cool surprises and weird moments and comedy was well done. Probably the best game related movie I have seen.

The story is interesting. Yes.
But i wished it did more with the racing part. The first "mission" was really clever with the racing backwards stuff. But the rest? Meh. The second act in particular is not very fun to watch. It's too much "Shining": a horror movie in this more kid-friendly one. The ending is pretty neat however. Overall, i would give this a 6.4, rounded to a 6.

I like the virtual world, I like the things you can do and the fun you can have inside it. The problem is the OUTSIDE world. You have IOI the big bad corporate bastards that are obviously the bad guys, but these guys literally kill people with NO consequence. Okay so there are no cops or anything, so why doesn't IOI just militarize and take control of everything? It makes NO sense. If there are cops or something, why not just go to them in the first place? IOI is offering millions of dollars like its nothing, has armies of people playing the game, yet they cant militarize in the real world and take control? Whats stopping IOI from forcibly taking the servers and making what they want? Better yet, take the platform and make their own! There are so many easy and clearer paths that could have been taken yet they choose to take the hardest path. The movie makes no sense in any aspect of any kind or real world logic. I get that its some post apocalyptic world where the video game means everything, but that means that the real world is just ignored and companies like IOI take over but not really but kinda but not kinda.... This movie is good if you will never read the amazing book's back cover blurb that the film is based on.
Now don't think that I'm an old fan of the book that hates the movie. I didn't know there was a book before I saw this.
In fact I mostly liked the movie on my first viewing. It made me get the book and read it. After that I hated the movie.
While the movie is about 10% the same as the book, the biggest flaws are things you'd see without knowing that. There are people running around on the sidewalk in VR gear not bumping into things or tripping!?
Large groups of people killed in the simulation are kicked out of the game in reality in the exact same pattern as they were killed like they were standing in VR in the exact same spot as IRL.
So much suspension of disbelief is needed and not because of the sci-fi, just poor film making decisions.
I give this a 5 because it was a gateway drug to the jewel that is the book.

You know what really impressed me in this movie?
The severe lack of political correctness and other neoliberal propaganda.
It was just pure entertainment without trying to manipulate you into an agenda.

Aside from that it perfectly captured the video/computer game and pop culture. And that with an old director as Steven Spielberg. That also impressed me a lot.
The thing is, the references and homages arent cheesy or unfunny, like from someone who never understood this culture, but they actually make sense and make you laugh, they also reflect the gaming culture right now with all its ups and downs. At some point, when a bridge collapsed, I was so immersed that I thought to myself "just build a bridge like in Fortnite!". But of course, Fortnite wasnt that well known when this movie was made. :)

Someone who is a gamer and pop culture fan himself wrote this script. And he didnt care about irrelevant PC! Because he knew that people play games and watch movies because they want to escape the dishonest and manipulative reality we have.

Recomendada.

So many reasons to be... The first reason is it has a lot of Easter Eggs that I was amazed to see in one movie.
The second reason is that the story and the way to tell are new and cool.
The third reason is the cast, the cast was good in the VR mode, but it was not that good outside of it!
The fourth reason is the CGI, it was fine as a movie in 2018, but as a story-line in 2045, it wasn't that good.
But it wasn't mistake-less, it has some drops too!
The biggest one is that the voices weren't fitting on the Players in the VR mode.
And the way Samantha escaped from her cage, wasn't really convincing!
I totally loved it... And quickly it has been one of my favorite movies!

The setup was extremely basic. Find 3 keys, pass 3 trials. I expect movies to be more sophisticated than a game of Doom. The mindless overdone CGI in the "virtual" world was just overdone for the sake of overdoing it. King Kong roams about, but who cares? None of it meant a thing. It was all gratuitous nonsense. And this whole idea that VR enables some kind of a magical transportation to another world falls flat. I actually had VR in the mid 1990s (it was called VFX1 and VFX3D), and now I have PS4 VR. It's not magical transportation to anywhere. You have to make sure you don't step on the cord, that you don't step on your cat, that you don't trip over the sofa. And the "world" is just basically a TV screen pushed up against your face. It's fun but it's not exactly transporting. This kind of sci-fi fantasy would have been more interesting and convincing years ago before so many became familiar with VR; the simplistic setup to this story was not interesting and the reality of VR makes the story hard to accept. He is an innocent, socially challenged man, yet he does not express anger at the world. He is kind, loving and simply wishes happiness upon everyone.

This is a Steven Spielberg film, though. As expected, the production is not only great, it is one of the best in recent years. Seriously, I encourage you to watch this film in as highest quality as you can get your hands on. It is a visual blast from start to finish. The video-game designed world takes center stage, but Spielberg still manages to find polish even in the real dystopian world through beautiful long tracking shots.

Unfortunately, this is where the praise stops. For a film so beautiful and filled with references, 'Ready Player One' is a plethora of underdeveloped cliche side-characters and an over-developed lead character, Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan). He is a hero among the virtual world, yet his anime we-are-gonna-make-it personality is seriously obnoxious. Sure, there is a teenager style edginess to it all, but overall he is filled with empty lines and superficiality.

In the end, this is a Spielberg film. So it's filled with absolute by-the-book visual panache and compulsively obsessive directorial polish. The script is occasionally broken, suffering mostly from an uneven and basic character and situational development, yet Spielberg fills it with a pleasant vibe not manifested necessarily through its heartwarming pop culture references, but by the times of which they remind us. Now if only there would have been more focus on them.

While failing to live up to the standards of a classic Spielberg blockbuster with its characters and writing, Ready Player One is at least entertaining enough to warrant a watch.

All the movie is is CGI and random, clashing pop culture references from so many different eras and genres that it's just a phantasmagoric cacophony.

A largely enjoyed film which will go down as a Spielberg classic! This was something new and refreshing, and became something I thought was childish, to something that made me think about the future. Maybe this could happen someday, eh? 7/10.

Seriously, they basically read us a user guide to the movie! And, of course, the much heralded soundtrack which is basically a greatest hits of the 80s playlist. Again, seriously, how much did THAT cost in licensing fees?! And 15-mins in I'm getting the first bit of too-muchery, during the wreck-every-sec opening race where Parzival, aka Z, is tailing Artemis and is just so fortunate to be able to pick up all the players' coins who crash near him, while he miraculously escapes the mayhem around him, yeh, ok, it's like this then. The animated characters are derivatives of those in "Avatar", so I guess they licensed that tech, too. Keep in mind that anyone can be anything, species, gender, etc but our principals have chosen avatars that resemble them IRL, way to spoon feed us Spielberg. And it's kind of incongruent that Wade IRL is nerdy meek and a pushover but his alter ego, Parzival, is bold and assertive, so that doesn't track. And the Curator, a C3PO derivative, seeing a pattern here? Skipping to the end, it's filled with Spielberg's "Amazing Stories" material and the most blatant is when Parzival asks Halliday what he is and Halliday responds deflectively. While enigmatic to young 'uns, it's once again infuriatingly derivative and a wasted trope to any grownup. And finally, the final scene is a direct contradiction of that just described scene betw Z and Halliday. Oh, unexpected treat, TJ Miller (formerly of "Silicon Valley") as an awkwardly comedic I-Roc. Tieing this up, the VR CGI was decent enough but it didn't always track with reality and the overall plot was so very derivative that watching this qualifies as a rewatch of like five other films. I legitimately fell asleep while watching this movie. It's inconsistent, boring, flashy, and completely lacking in substance. I can't believe that Steven Spielberg dropped the ball so hard on this one.

Trying to forget the horrific jumps from the source material, and grade the movie as is, it doesn't flow very well. And the story barely makes sense. My hopes for this movie were pretty low after seeing the trailer, but after being forced to watch it after my wife got it at redbox, I'm just heartbroken. This was a destruction of a fantastic book. Basically none of the things we were all told it was going to be. Instead, Ready Player One is a gaudy CGI-fest with nonexistent characters. The perfect example of what is wrong with so much of modern cinema. It's not devoid of joy though. Spielberg still manages to put on a decent show no matter how overblown.

The movie is filled with Easter eggs. Good luck seeing any of them though. Even the most eagle-eyed of viewers will have a hard time picking out all of the references and cameos amongst the constant movement and visual clutter. I can only think of about three properties that were handled with any sort of love anyways (Chucky, The Shining, and Back to the Future in case you were wondering). The rest of the inclusions feel shallow and devoid of affection.

There's so much happening onscreen that it often devolves into visual noise. The movie is at it's best when it slows down and focuses on the story. I really dug the core premise of players trying to complete secret challenges to win a once and a lifetime prize. There are some really cool sequences that result from this. The battle against the evil corporation is nowhere near as interesting though thanks to some truly terrible characterization. We spend so much time looking at CGI avatars that I often found myself forgetting there were real people just on the other side. Even when we do get to look at some human faces the material they are given is so weak that the actors aren't able to have any kind of impact or presence. They have the makings of backstories, but these only ever come up once and very briefly at that. So things like the main character's loss of parents and occasional abuse from whatever loser his aunt is dating at the time do nothing to make us sympathize with and root for him. It's too shallow and cliché anyways. The rest of the cast fares much worse.

Whatever message the story is trying to get across ends up lost in translation. If this is really supposed to be about valuing real life then shouldn't more of the movie taken place there rather than almost entirely inside the game? I liked how Spielberg used the game's creator to sort of parallel himself and express how all creators will have a piece of themselves living on inside of their creations, but admittedly not much is happening there either. Ready Player One is much better as a critique of the current state of the video game industry with it's subtle jabs at things like microtransactions and IAPs.

I know it must sound like I hate this given all of the negative stuff I've had to say up to this point, but let me assure you that I don't. There are most certainly elements that I enjoyed. Such as the Overlook Hotel sequence which is both genuinely thrilling and a wonderful homage to one of the most celebrated horror films of all time. It's also a technical marvel. T.J. Miller, who I usually can't stand outside of Silicon Valley, is quite amusing here. Although his character contributes nothing to the overall story. I loved seeing that Master of None's Lena Waithe got a role in the film. Hopefully this will serve as a launching point for her into bigger and better things.

Make no mistake, Ready Player One is highly flawed, lacking in the narrative chops that will allow viewers to engage with anything other than the gargantuan visuals, and I'm likely never going to watch it again. The Willy Wonka with a VR-gaming angle type plot keeps things entertaining even at it's most excessive, but the depth we normally get from Spielberg films just isn't there.
