Sure the story isn't too bad but we all watch these movies to see Stallone kick some ass and he delivers on it. All the kills in this movie are great because of how evil they made everyone from killing people in cold blood and killing their children. This movie does not sugarcoat the war that he has to go through and it all leads up to the best finale because he is on a 50 Cal mowing down enemies everywhere. Expand

I really enjoyed it. Stallone is a man with moral as well as physical courage--he has the cajones to say that when dealing with evil men it takes more than appealing to their better nature.

Fantastic movie. While it may be a bit gorey, this is reality over there. A Rambo shoot em up with a political message. Couldn't have done a much better job. The critics have officially lost their minds.

Sly is back on top after a slight misstep with 06's Balboa. An almost perfect movie if it wasn't for the score. If Sly would have brought in his brother Frankie to do the music, this would have been a perfect 10!

However, the tight editing kept the action from mixing together into an incoherent mess. This is an action movie of course but it does bring the plight of the Karen people to light. It is hard to believe that some of these crimes against humanity are actually happening. Now, everybody knows what a Rambo movie is all about so the question you have to ask yourself is was it entertaining or not. That's the only criterion Rambo movies should ever be graded upon. The short answer for me was a resounding YES! The setup was short, the villain was truly evil and the damsel was indeed in distress. Not to give the ending away, but the good guys win (mostly) in the end. What's not to like? Oh yeah, liberal critics who expect every movie to be PC and "thought provoking". I'll go so far as to say that this movie is a litmus test. If you like it, you're of a conservative mind, don't like it, you're probably an easily offended liberal with no clue as to how the world outside your bubble really works. Go RAMBO! Expand

While the ability of one man to survive such events is all Hollywood, the underlying story and violence is probably illustrated more accurately in this movie than any other fake propane explosion that Hollywood has ever created. This is what it feels like to see people ripped to pieces by high explosives and large caliber bullets. As a fan of well done action, this war movie is without peer. Talk to some of the folks coming home from Iraq who have been too close to an IED or had to pick up what was left of Pat Tillman. As for the acting, it was just what the story called for. Characters close to caricature but not so simple as to be ridiculous or unsympathetic. There is more entertainment and REAL message in this short film than all six of the last Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings films. This is the second best Rambo movie. A movie that could go wrong, but Stallone looked deeper into just making another bloody action movie in the vein of the previous two from many years back.
The story is very simple, Rambo being talked into bringing a handful christian missionaries deep into conflicted Burma, manages to do so, but all go so horribly wrong for the group of missionaries. Rambo gets called into another trip of boating up a group of trained soldiers with a mission to try to free them. Rambo, on the other side of the river decides to track behind them because his instinct tells him it will go wrong. The rest is not hard to figure out.
So what make this movie so good if the story is so linear.
The answer is the brutal honesty of it. Stallone, did not just wanted to make a action movie, rather, he wanted to bring a political message to show how the long standing conflict in Burma has resulted in years of genocide.
With this road taken, there was no option to show how bloody and brutal war can be. And it resulted into a peak PG18 movie where Stallone are not sugarcoating anything about the Burmese military junta savage methods.

The movie paces very well along. and ends into some of the best scenes in war action movies. A solid return of the Rambo formula with a message more clear than ever. Back into the jungle where John Rambo belongs.

The plot is simple, to be expected. Which is why I don't understand the lack of any sort of character development beyond the superficial first impression we're given. Stuff like, "Oh, yeah, that dude NEEDs killin". When somebody's head flies off, or 3 or 4 dudes simultaneously liquify around a Claymore, the theater just erupted. It was a pretty darned good time. Not nearly as much story as First Blood I or II, but I'd compare Rambo to "Rocky Balboa" - a reminder of how cool the series was - a celebration of the series with some over-the-top mayhem. All I know is that the Burmese can't be too happy with their portrayal in this - I don't think ever a group of "bad guys" has looked this bad. Oh well, they all get killed anyway. Expand

In other words, the carnage rivals that of the spaghetti horror flicks from the 70s and 80s. But the setting is Burma... so that's the way it should be depicted. I tip my hat to Sylvester Stallone for pulling it off. Sure, a bit of the dialogue is cheesy, but that's to be expected. The film is surprisingly a pretty noble endeavor. I wish the cast was upgraded and I would have hired Hans Zimmer or Klaus Badelt for the score. But I'm nit picking. BTW, if you're wondering why "the critics gave it crappy reviews" it's because they really haven't. The numbers assigned are arbitrary. It all depends on the bias of the Metacritic.com moderators. Personally, I don't think they do a good job of gauging the proper scores... The A.O. Scott review in the NY Times for example should be a 75. But whatever. Expand

Although this film lacks an original story and the acting is sub par at best, the over the top violence and unrealistic action scenes help make this film decent enough to watch it at least once.

Stallone is great as usual, presenting us a character that we all love from the 80's, but everyone else is very one-dimensional. When you watch a Rambo movie, though, you don't care about the story, you care about the action. And there's plenty of it here. There's tons of blood, flying body parts, and exploding heads. Action junkies will get a kick out of this flick Expand

After the third part, which I personally like, but it was not so well received by other people, it is understandable that they simply said that it would like to wait a while, invent something and create some solid seed that people will like. So was it worth waiting for those long years for the new film Ramba? Well, hard to say. As people's reviews say, yes. The film was a success and yes, I liked it too, but not so much that I would have liked it during the waiting time. It's even the weakest part of the series in my opinion, but that's my opinion. The film works great in one thing and that is that it's simply not as frantic as the previous ones. It didn't take long in the previous films and we immediately got a proper event, which we somehow managed to devour. Here we will wait for some time before one starts and thus create space for a deeper story. To put it bluntly, or at least I don't think the story is anything extra, but I'm glad that the film took its time to salt all the action, but it has one catch, at least in my eyes. The point is, it will end quickly. Yes, it means that the film runs away quickly and is not boring, which is good, but I mean that you are just waiting for some event here and it will happen. That's right and it's delicious. But as soon as it happens, it is soon over. I'm not saying it wasn't enough. Not that. The event was great, but it just started to go and it ended. Otherwise, after a long wait, we got a good film, which I recommend especially to lovers of the event. Those who expect a good story may be disappointed. This is mainly the event, which is a long-standing classic in the Rambo series. For me, a good film that I recommend. Expand

I'll tell you where he is: In the forests of Burma kicking butt and being a raw savage as he always is! This film is excitingly adventurous and violent, but does it offer more of a challenge for tough-as-nails John Rambo? I don't know... But what I do know is that the extraction squad in this film was relentless and stealthy. Talk about a tough job. Saving a few missionaries within an army of Burmese soldiers who are witlessly dangerous and scary isn't an easy assignment. Nevertheless, the warriors and heroes in this film fought like heck to make it out alive and made this film an action-packed, 90 minute banger. Two thumbs up. Expand

As many of critics would say, it's a Rambo movie so don't be so serious. We take it serious because we waited and had high hopes for a new Rambo movie. Aside from violence, the substances that made the old movies great are missing.

In this case no. This film really should be lauded for bringing the atrocities in Myanmar/Burma to the general populace... but by veiling it under the name of this tired action franchise it turns it into a 'boys film' when what it really should do is be used as a tool to get something done about the crisis. It is one of those films where the graphic nature MAY, just about, justified. However, this does not detract from the fact that Sylvester Stalonne's acting and directing abilities are too wooden for words. Better than Rambos II and III. Expand

"Rambo" a.k.a. Rambo 4 was a half-length film, but with much more violence, to which we were accustomed with the character, Sylvester Stallone, the action scenes, and locations were the main feature of the film, the rest should not be formalized.

The action scenes were all technically well done. The scenes were never confusing and reminiscent of 80's actioners in feel. The action continually ups the ante in terms of both excitement and gore. The violence is never bogged down by a deep plot. But that may be the problem right there. Everything around the action scenes was deeply troubling. The dialogue and the acting was all pretty terrible, but the half-hearted attempt at some sort of morality was what is really disturbing about this film. And before anyone says "Dude, it's Rambo, don't go searching for deeper meanings," I am just responding to what Stallone as writer and director put in the movie. It's in there, so I am going to comment on it. I will say that I am glad there was at least an attempt at some sort of commentary or deeper meaning, because otherwise it would've been just an almost pornographic series of gruesome killings. However, the morality of film is so muddled that I'm not convinced Stallone even knew what he was trying to say. Violence solves everything? Don't try to make positive change? You can't change your nature? What? And I don't even want to get into the implications regarding race in the movie. The film ends up being completely soulless. The action is impressive, but only for the fact that it is completely relentless. The film tries so desperately to make all the violence about something, but ultimately fails, and the audience is left wondering what the point was. Expand

Rambo tries to re-integrate into society, the challenge that's face by many American veterans, and Stallone was brilliant as Rambo.

After the success of the first film, it spins bad to mediocre sequels and Rambo is one of them. The war may be fictionalized but at least make it believable like First Blood. There is no new ideas in Rambo, just more mindless violence. A film that values money over imagination, fan boys just eat it up without even realizing that Rambo is not as deep as First Blood. Therefore, it's not as good.

More violence, killing (236 guys) and gore doesn't make it good or better. The final action sequence is just stupid, it's just Rambo on a machine gun shooting down guys for about 10 minutes. Anyone could have come up with that! This is not the worst Rambo film, Rambo III is, but it does suck. Not seen Rambo: First Blood Part II but who cares, it's not highly cerebral.

The financially "Rambo" is the work of a desparate actor/filmmaker, who missed a golden opportunity to dig deep; to finally make amends with his big payday-motivated career choices and corresponding downward trajectory in popularity. The financially successful "First Blood", and its blockbuster follow-up, probably ruined his reputation as an actor like how "Smokey & the Bandit" made Burt Reynolds likewise, a washed-up A-lister, and industry laughingstock(before Paul Thomas Anderson's "Boogie Nights"). Instead of living up to his "the next Marlon Brando" billing, Sylvester Stallone made films like "Over the Top" and "Tango & Cash", which would later lead his nadir, "Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot"(w/Estelle Getty). It wasn't until James Mangold's "Copland" did audiences remember that Sylvester Stallone was indeed an actor, not just a celebrity. "Rambo", to my disappointment, is no meditation on violence like "Unforgiven"(in which Clint Eastwood returned to the western as a older, wiser actor/filmmaker); this fourth installment of the John Rambo saga is shockingly reductive. What little artistry that remains in the mind's eye of this filmmaker, based on this witless display of bang, bang, bang, and ka-boom, was spent on the nostalgia-heavy "Rocky Balboa". The violence on display here is supposed to be justified by its social consciousness; its global citizenry duty of shedding light on the social upheaval in southern Asia. Yeah, right; as if this movie's target audience gives a rat's ass about Burma. "Rambo" is pared down to the genre's essentials; blood and explosions, made reprehensible by its purported dilligence in political awareness. Expand
