"Promising Young Woman" finds first-time writer/director Emerald Fennell pulling no shortage of punches in terms of subject matter, thematics and tone, and leading actor Carey Mulligan at her most vivid and calculating to date. I can't think"Promising Young Woman" finds first-time writer/director Emerald Fennell pulling no shortage of punches in terms of subject matter, thematics and tone, and leading actor Carey Mulligan at her most vivid and calculating to date. I can't think of a movie I've seen in recent memory where the first 2/3 -- nay -- 7/8 really belie just how satisfyingly well-executed the ending's going to be. This isn't to say that the first two acts or so are bad or even ineffective in any way. It's just that the ending of this movie is so deft in its messaging and potency, that you're really left feeling as though the filmmaker was hustling you for about 90 minutes, whilst surreptitiously setting up one of the most daring endings you'll probably see in a theater all year. Not a bad feeling to be reacquainted with after God knows how long. In any event, I'd say it's more than worth the watch, with an absolute wallop of an ending that's going to have thinking for days, I'm sure. Expand

Rather than hurting others, it's the threat of hurt to make the victim realize why their action was wrong. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love the cinematography of this film, the musical score used throughout the film is also very clever it has a punch. I appreciate how the film provoked my thoughts and feelings toward Carrie's journey to revenge, I like how the film was structured to provide back stories and deep dive look why Carey Mulligan's character is plotting revenge to each of her tormentors in the past. The ending is not what I expected but it works very well and Carey Mulligan's acting in this film is superb complemented very well with the ensemble. A must film to watch. Expand

I mean, just look on IMDB. Film is subjective and it’s OK not to like this movie, but the thing I don’t understand is why certain people are upset with the themes this movie appropriately presents. Even through deep inside I know why. If it scares them, good, because they deserve to be scared. ‘Promising Young Woman’ is a rare revenge movie that crosses several genres with one sharp sweep. Some parts are funny, other times it’s romantic, but it can get DARK really quick. I thought the way it was executed was creative and interesting. It shocked me at times with its twist and turns, even though it shouldn’t be surprising. The world can be so dark and treacherous that being surprised by its twisted ways is a bit foolish. Certain elements felt realistic, while other elements of the movie felt...well, like a movie.

It’s nice to see that Carey Mulligan’s career is getting better and better. In this movie Mulligan delivers an amazing performance that was captivating to watch. It’s difficult to imagine an actor playing a character who is dealing with so much emotional baggage and vulnerability from past events in her life, but tries her best to conceal it, but Mulligan manages to find the right balance. She can be extremely funny, emotional, and really intimidating. Her drunk acting deserves some praise as well, because within the movie her character pretends to be drunk in bars or nightclubs, to trick “nice guys” who want take advantage on her intoxicated vulnerability, before she drops the act to scare them enough to teach them a lesson. The transformation from drunk to sober was nothing short of impressive. I was surprised to see Bo Burnham here and it’s great seeing him getting acting roles. He is a man of many talents; comedy is one of them and in this movie he never fails to make me smile. Alison Brie and Alfred Molina are also in this movie and both did a great job in their small roles. I give this movie major credit for being unpredictable. I would sometimes try to guess where the story might be heading, to only have the rug pulled right under me. It was an interesting choice to cast likeable actors in the roles of predators and despicable people. The movie smartly suggests that people like these can easily hide their sinister side through a fake smile and popularity. Now I’m being vague about certain things because I’m hoping what I’ve said so far might boost your interest in checking this one. I’m starting to do that now, going in blind and leaving impressed (hopefully). Director and writer Emerald Fennell did a solid job on delivering a fresh and unique take on a brutal topic with extreme care on the subject matter. This is also her direct debut and everything I’ve seen on screen shows great potential for her as a filmmaker in the future. The look of the movie has that candy-like colour to it, which made the movie look visually appealing to the eye. Revenge has never looked so colourful. Without spoiling the ending for the movie, but the way it concludes is very strange and rare. I was both sad and happy at the same time. However, it can also make or break the movie for some, while I was kind of mixed on it. Some parts of the ending were realistic, as it was a cold reminder for us that sometimes justice isn’t always severed. Unfortunately, this is where my issues start to come in. When I said some parts of the ending was dark and realistic, well to me it didn’t quite commit to that with the last few minutes of the movie. I just wished they took more of a real approach to conclude the conflict that could be plausible. I also thought the movie was a little on the nose with its social message at times.

And that’s really it for issues. What, you expected more? Surprise!

Overall rating: Revenge is best severed in confetti and rainbow colours.

Carey Mulligan gives a riveting performance as the wounded and vengeful woman. I was not 100% convinced by the ending, but when a friend compared it to "Killing Eve" it made more sense. (Fennel worked on Killing Eve.)
My one complaint is that Laverne Cox was underused as the friend/co-worker. More could have been mined from that relationship.
However, the casting was so spot on and the story was, unfortunately, all too familiar. I urge everyone to see this movie then discuss it widely.
I look forward to seeing what Fennel does next.

Of course, due to the pandemic, the original release date of April 2020 was scrapped and I had to wait until after Christmas to finally see it. AND, I risked it all to see this movie in a theater; but, as of today, you can now catch Carey Mulligan’s stellar performance from the comfort of your own home. Promising Young Woman is best if you go into it cold, but as a brief synopsis, Emerald Fennell wrote and directed this story about a young woman, whose life has stalled since a tragic event in her past, and follows the extreme measures she takes to cope until a new opportunity presents itself. I can’t keep a secret – this movie blew me away.

Carey Mulligan plays Cassie, the young woman with the aforementioned promise, whose world was rocked when she was in medical school, and now she’s taking matters into her own hands. Cassie is bold and cunning and smart as a whip. She’s disarming, reckless and determined. Mulligan hits every note just right and plays Cassie with that delicate balance in tone that this film strives for. It is something special when the right role and the perfect actress come together. Don’t be surprised to see Carey Mulligan popping up in this year’s Best Actress races.

This is Emerald Fennell’s first feature film as a director, and she has previously written episodes of “Killing Eve.” She clearly has a firm handle on mixing thrilling elements and humor. The social commentary throughout the film is so thought-provoking while also being incredibly entertaining. There is not a boring moment throughout. Fennell has written not only an interesting plot, but the dialogue throughout is sly and calculated to keep you off guard.

There is some discussion about whether Promising Young Woman is a comedy or a drama. That categorization probably doesn’t matter. It certainly is dramatic, and there is definitely comedy here, but it is as dark as they come. With a cast populated by Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Jennifer Coolidge, Max Greenfield, among others, there is a clear intent to infuse humor into what can be a dark and triggering subject matter. No matter how you classify it, ultimately, it is just really good.

Really, everything comes together just right in Promising Young Woman. It is refreshing to see a new film that has something new to say. This one is it. Do not miss it. If you want to brave the theaters or rent this one at home, it is worth the time and money and the big box of popcorn.

But you were also young girl living in a suburb family, could this possible lead to justify what he did could that trauma lead to you to the end?

Cassie, undergoing grieve for 7 years of her BFF, because she was not go with her to the party that day, blaming herself forever that her friend suicide over the raping in the party, and no justice happened for the white boy, yet everybody knew, but no one tells, no one believe her but that boy, and no matter what, boys will always protect each other, also the women.

Carey Mulligan is FANTASTIC, she process the emptiness, the grieve, happily in love, madness and determination for revenge. Emerald Fennell wrote such script, have such meaning of the society for their preference or truth, the rich will always protect each other. Everyone has it shinning moment but MULLIGAN is EVERYTHING.

The story is so impactful, tasteful, surely a lot of men will not believe anything what a person could go through, no one said all the men are evil, this story is hard to get over, it will stay in your head for a while because of it, the story reflex of real life, not just harassing, even today some critic trying to gang up for Mulligan, because Mulligan criticized one critic that she is not Hot enough or not Maggot Robbie who has been doing similar characters, blindly protecting or defending each other no matter it's wrong or not. a lot of today's situation is similar to this particular pastern, its stall in it system of this society, will people ever think about it, is it right or wrong?

Even with #metoo, its doesn't change anyone how they believe in, will people know about it will tell it? Will they only believe it only a lot of people who experienced it and telling it? there surely a lot of issues around it society, but Promising Young Woman perfectly tell a story, and give its story perfect ending.

I watched this movie four months ago, and I still think about it.
This is a look into rape culture, mysogeny, internalized mysogeny, and how trauma can have us seeking revenge. I initially was left feeling empty at the ending, but it truly was the perfect most realistic ending. Life is hard and perpetrators get away and are not held accountable the majority of the time. I bumped up my score from a 9 to a 10 because I truly believe everything was thought out and interesting: the pastel color palette, the angling of the camera for halo and wing motifs, the wide shots throughout making her feel small and insignificant, the casting knowing that the audience has preconceived opinions about the men cast, the outfits and all of the settings, etc.

It’s insane that this is a directoral debut for Emerald Fennell because her direction is fantastic. Every shot and character is so incredibly well planned and thought it. I’m very excited to see what this director is capable of in the future. Carey Mulligan is incredible as the main character. It’s easily one of my favorite performances of the entire year. Her reactions and how she delivers her lines is fantastic and I’m excited to see what she does with her career after this. Every performance here is great to be honest. I always feel skeptical when they cast comedians in films that are supposed to be dramatic but Bo Burnham killed it here. It goes to show that anyone can do an amazing job given the right material. This has some of the best framing and cinematography of the year. Each shot is visually pleasing in how it’s framed and each shot knows what needs to be in it. Every shot felt to me like it was intentional in what it wanted to show. In other words, there was a certain aesthetic to the film that worked very well for the tone. The story of the film is powerful, emotional, well thought out, and relevant. The film has a lot to say about rape and sexual assault and How authority figures act on it without being overbearing or too on the nose but it can feel like that at points. The last 45 minutes of this film is just gut punch after gut punch and it’s great. The film does a great job at making you feel for Mulligan’s character. While some may find the ending a little over the top and dumb, I didn’t. I thought the ending made logical sense and it was a huge pump in the fist for the main character as I was starting to root for her. I would highly recommend checking this out if you are okay with the dark subject matter. Expand

Carey Mulligan's performance is the standout for the last 12 months. The movie inverts the trope of 'a wronged man' who becomes a hero by avenging his friends killed or wronged by generic evildoers. Everything from Batman to Marvel soars to this generic idea of the transformation of a person from the everyday type to a hero through revenge and vengeance. But here the payoff is painful, the lead character Cassie portrayed as mentally imbalanced, wildly inappropriate, suffering PTSD, sexy, funny, hopeful, and the proverbial loose cannon. As a first film, it's incredible. You love Cassie then you loathe Casie, then you understand her. Don't miss it! Expand

Brilliant depiction of painfully familiar situations in an insanely entertaining, gripping and rattling way. It just hits a nerve with this fresh yet harrowing take on this topic. Definitely mind-blowing in all the best ways.

Cassie was on her way to becoming a successful doctor when a tragic event in her past completely derailed her future. Cassie now lives a secret double life, venturing out at night to a bar or nightclub pretending to be so drunk she can barely stand. While in her apparent vulnerable state she is on the prowl for potential predators who can't resist the temptation to "help" Cassie in her incredibly intoxicated condition, but after an unexpected encounter she now has a chance for revenge. Emerald Fennell's directorial debut and she really has given us a film that packs a huge emotional impact and leaves a long lasting impression. A brilliant screenplay with stunning visuals, I can't wait to see what Fennell does next.

Promising Young Woman is definitely one you'll be thinking about long after the credits have ended. From the opening scene you're immediately plunged into a constant state of unease. There's a growing sense of impending disaster building the entire time. The film itself is tackling a lot of sensitive topics but handles it very well. Swiftly moving from darkly comedic to uncomfortable to watch at times. It's shocking, and sure to provoke some strong emotions from everyone. Not only is film an expertly told revenge story but Carey Mulligan's performance is truly stunning. This part was made for her and she completely disappears into the character of Cassandra. A terrifyingly tense revenge thriller that everyone should see. Many of you have probably already seen Promising Young Woman and if you haven't it's highly recommended.

There are many flawed characters in this morality tale and I felt as a viewer that it was somewhat heavy handed. We are a bit too omniscient the way that the plot is unfolded to us and because of that there are many plot points you can see coming. I will say that it is also really worth exploring these stories now as it resounds just as heavy in the current climate of the "me too" era. For the most part it was shockingly refreshing to see people get their comeuppance through out this sudo thriller/revenge story, but for me that's where any enjoyment ends. I'm not sure that we're supposed to like, or even fully relate to, anyone in this sorry. Still, I like the main character's strength and resolve. It was a testament to the excellent acting that was on display the entire movie. My last bit of praise goes to the score. Whoever made the choices for what pop songs, down the the decision to do a string quartet orchestration arrangement of "Toxic," did a really great job. I'm not typically taken in by song score and I'm not a fan of most pop music, but this score/soundtrack really set the movie perfectly. Expand

In it we have our protagonist, a young woman aged 30 who works at a coffee shop and still lives at home with her parents. She goes out to dive bars and clubs on the weekends and goes home with men and seduces them while pretending to be inebriated only to reveal she is not really intoxicated when they try to take advantage of her. This typically has the affect of freaking out the male she is with. This aspect of the film I was a little critical of, as she is putting herself in danger always going home with strange men from bars and pretending to be f****d up. The guy could still be an actual threat and still attack her even after she reveals she is sober. Anyway, she does this to take vengeance on the male gender for the time her friend was date-raped after a party in college and committed suicide when her case wasn't taken seriously. She also takes vengeance some women who did not help her friend who was sexually assaulted and tricks them into thinking they were molested or their loved ones were molested. She also meets a guy she went to medical school with before dropping out due to her traumatic experience having the friend that committed suicide due to being raped and things go pretty well between them at first as they start dating. I found it a little strange how this woman who clearly didn't trust men and had issues with men was willing to date some guy just because he seemed like a good guy and I guess she was attracted to him. Anyway, she discovers he was actually present during the sexual assault of her friend and just stood by bemused by it. She is devastated and breaks up with him. She then goes on to pretend to be a stripper at the bachelor party for the man who raped her friend in college as he is now engaged. She gets him alone in a bedroom and ties him up, revealing who she truly is and attempts to attack him, carving her friends name on his back. He gets free and strangles her to death. However, in the end he doesn't get away with it as a cop she previously met who was sympathetic to her story found out about the murder and has him arrested in the end. I thought the movie was sometimes pretty tense, and for the most part it landed emotionally. However, the main character seemed too vindictive and I thought it was a little unfair how the movie implied that almost without fail every man from the parties/bars wanted to take advantage of her when she seemed impaired. It was also a little unrealistic how she would continue getting away with her deception. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman (2020) will polarize audiences. This tale exposes rape culture, victim blaming, and the complete mishandling of justice we find lining miles of newspapers of the last three decades all while introducing a lone disruptor who challenges every notion of and exacting revenge upon violence against women. Carey Mulligan offers a harrowing portrayal as Cassandra, a woman pushed to the very edge as she reels from a haunted past who’s true nature is slowly revealed by the very end of the final act. As distressing and disturbing as this topic can present itself, the film is in no way a trudge to get through. Fennell offers wit and a biting satire in each character and relationship on screen. Amid this revenge plot, the main narrative offers B-plots allowing for characters to fall in love, reconcile with parents, educate and to come of age after years of mental oppression. With every reason to break down and cry, Mulligan’s Cassandra find reasons to smile, be happy, and most importantly, be herself. As interesting and multi-faceted Fennell’s narrative is, it is equally well-paced and beautifully shot. Vibrant day shots are contrasted by the dark of seedy nightclubs creating a mood both appealing and cacophonic. The resulting effect on the audience is a constant need to find out what happens next while also being terrifyingly hesitant to actually see what is around that corner. And despite the dire nature of the narrative and the uneasiness the audience may feel, the film remains unapologetically funny. For most of the film, Mulligan is foiled by Jennifer Tilly, Bo Burnham, and Laverne Cox who all offer unique back and forths that add the right amount of levity to put the viewer at ease in between moments of dread. The humor continues until the climax which offers the perfect satirical response to our society’s ambivalence to one of it’s most pressing injustices.
Interestingly, the film uses music (soundtrack not score) to further that satire. The songs of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, two female pop stars often the victimized by societal judgement. As the final act nears its climax a disturbing cover of Spears’ “Toxic” plays as a sort of hero’s theme but at the same time forces the audience to question who exactly is the toxic party in the end.

Revenge movies are intertwined with, and can’t help but exploit, violence in one way or another: tragic violence leads to righteous violence. As the premise for an action movie, they are usually pretty entertaining. For the icky and loathsome rape/revenge subgenre, the result, more often than not, is usually grim and joyless. However, the debut film from writer-director Emerald Fennell is a different kind of revenge movie; in fact, it is a different kind of movie all around. To describe this film as simply a revenge picture, or a dark comedy, or a social issue movie, or a thriller would be a disservice. It is all those things and more, much more. Just like its main character, Promising Young Woman plays with expectations to great effect. This is is easily one of the best films of 2020.

Carey Mulligan gives an absolutely incredible performance as Cassie, a 30-year-old medical school dropout with a peculiar hobby. On certain nights she dons a completely out of character outfit, goes out to a club or bar, and pretends to be falling down drunk. Without fail, a man will offer to take her home… or back to their place. Once they are alone and the man begins to take advantage of the nearly passed out Cassie, she reveals that she is not drunk at all. They have been caught, and what she does next is not what you might expect. The movie becomes something really special when the revenge plot kicks in. A chance meeting with someone from her medical school days spurs Cassie to give certain people from her past their overdue comeuppance for an ignored crime. The film reveals slowly, piece by piece, the events in Cassie’s past that set her on her current path. Fennell’s screenplay spares us flashbacks or exposition dumps. Cassie becomes more and more layered with each bit of information revealed and Mulligan’s performance becomes more complex and interesting as well. Cassie goes to some dark places and does unlikeable things, but Mulligan always holds our interest if not our sympathy. As smart as I think Fennell’s screenplay and direction are, I also think that Promising Young Woman does not work without Carey Mulligan. Her Best Actress Oscar nomination is well deserved.

Cassie’s revenge targets are numbered, literally, with roman numerals. You might be reminded of The Bride’s list of revenge targets in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill or The Bride’s list of revenge targets in François Truffaut’s The Bride Wore Black. While those women only had murder on their minds, Cassie’s revenge for her targets is far less violent, but far more devastating. Cassie’s goal is not what you would expect from decades of movies in which a woman is wronged or abused, toughens up, then has a physically violent revenge. What happens in Promising Young Woman is so much more interesting and, in many ways, more disturbing.

Promising Young Woman’s valid commentary on rape culture and those that participate in it or look the other way and society’s attitudes towards the abuse of women is so interwoven into the story that the film never feels didactic. Even in its darkest moments, Promising Young Woman is never dour or grim or dreadful. There are great moments of tension and unease and it has difficult scenes and difficult characters, but the film itself is not difficult to watch. As Roger Ebert would say, “no good movie is depressing.” There are moments of comedy, both light and dark, that break some of the tension and offer some relief but they also enhance the tone of the scenes. It is a delicate balance but well executed. The shifts from light to dark, comedy to drama, are stealthy and believable thanks to Fennell’s deft direction. Her sharp and clever screenplay takes turns and then turns again and every turn is challenging and intriguing. Fennell's Oscar nominations for Best Director and Original Screenplay are very well deserved. It is impressive and wonderful that everything in Promising Young Woman works as well as it does. I wish more movies were this daring and inventive.

However, this is also very much not a kids film, although it could be said that the colour emphasis gives it a slight comic book feel to it. I don't think its a spoiler as such to say that this film is a revenge thriller which focusses on sexual violence - I'm saying that as knowing that may put some people off wanting to watch it, for obvious reasons. I thought Carey Mulligan did a decent job portraying the titular character - I liked that she's quite an independent and determined character. What she does may be questionable by some, right enough, she's a character some may not fully agree with but I doubt if most people couldn't feel some sympathy for her back story, when its made clear.

This is very much a thriller/drama film, moreso than primarily an action film, so don't be expecting constant fast paced scenes, although I certainly wouldn't say its an entirely bland or utterly boring film. There's one main moral side to it, which becomes pretty clear not long after the film starts and the reason why the protaganist does what she does also becomes clear after perhaps the first half. Its not what I'd call ground breaking and if anything, its perhaps a good film to spark a conversation about the topic of sexual violence, consent and how men regard women. I'm not certain I'd call it an 'all out feminist film' as such. I think it does well at questioning how young women are judged in certain accusatory scenarios - questioning the culture of some young men.

There was one aspect to the ending which didn't sit well with me, in terms of realism but then I can be a bit 'nitpicky' at times I suppose. However, overall I'd say this is a good film thats worth seeing, yes. I was, however, a little disappointed that it seemed there wasn't much in the way of redeeming features in the 'male of the species', as I'd like to think that this isn't the case for everyone.

Right off the bat you don't need to say much more except: CAREY MULLIGAN!

It's unbelievable how changeable, multifaceted and just really strong acting Carey Mulligan in Promising Young Woman. A performance that can only be overwhelmed with superlatives. A big movie theater.

Short story snippet: Driven by a trauma from her past student days, the protagonist Cassie now leads a very extreme and also vengeful night life.

The film itself is dramaturgically very well structured and staged and has cool remixes of well-known music in it. In between it has its lengths, but ends in a very strong finale. A really well done thriller worth seeing.

4/5 bars.

In the case of Emerald Fennell's black comedy revenge-thriller Promising Young Woman, however, any expectations are justified and it must be with the devil if you leave the cinema disappointed. The story about 30-year-old Med School dropout Cassie, who leads a kind of double life after a traumatic event long ago, is original, involving and deals with a very important social issue.

Carey Mulligan is known to most from her breakthrough film An Education as the kindly but rebellious Jenny or from her somewhat dimwitted role in The Great Gatsby. Here she takes an absolute quantum leap in terms of acting and Mulligan succeeds brilliantly. She plays a poor soul who actually longs for love and affection but, because of her mission, doesn't let any real emotions get to her. Casey Thomas is a fascinating character in that, despite her questionable and sometimes bitterly evil actions, she is always aware of the situation. In one scene she responds to the statement "You're insane" without batting an eyelid with "No, I honestly don't think I am". No line could describe Casey better. In a world full of sexist machos, she's out for revenge for much of the film, except when confronted with her sudden love interest Ryan. Played by Bo Burnham, the young doctor comes across as the perfect Good Guy, completely refraining from physical advances in order to gain Casey's affection. Mulligan and Burnham share electrifying chemistry in every scene together, highlighted with their witty and almost toxic dialogues. Rounding out the all-around stellar performances of the cast are characters like Casey's parents Susan (Jennifer Coolidge) and Stanley (Clancy Brown), who are distraught with their daughter's condition but love her dearly. Alfred Molina has only a handful of scenes as the depressed lawyer Jordan Green, but shines with much vulnerability. Chris Lowell, Max Greenfield and Alison Brie all play certain antagonists from Casey's mysterious past. Interestingly, they are all usually seen in straight comedic roles.

Not too much can actually be said about the plot of Promising Young Woman, because the film is one of the most unpredictable and shocking thrillers in recent years in the way it is made. It is very fast-paced and always colourful and flashy, which gives you a somewhat distorted picture of this genre. In general, it is not a pure thriller. It has many funny and even sweet, rom-com-like moments. Beneath its surface, however, it is bitterly nasty and Fennell manages to reflect the theme of sexual abuse in both subtle and obvious ways, which is very good for the balance of the film. The ending is probably one of the strangest of the year and will leave some confused and possibly even underwhelmed. However, Mulligan's best career performance, the multi-faceted and brilliantly written script and its uniqueness and imperfection make Promising Young Woman one of the most important films of the year that will be in discussion for a long time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie works ok if you treat it as an absurdist revenge fantasy and strongly suspend disbelief. Even then there are some problems with tonal shifts as it often can't decide how funny or serious it wants to be, and many characters are jarringly one-dimensonal. While you understand the main character's motivation, you can't help but cringe at how utterly self destructive her behaviour is and how petty her goals are. Sometimes other people's actions destroy your life, but other times you let their actions destroy you. The latter is the case here.

Applying any kind of expectation of realism causes the entire plot to fall apart. How the hell could an explicit video of a med student's unconscious date rape make the rounds in class to the point where copies casually still exist 10 years later, without anyone notifying administration? This would have occurred around 2010, not 1965 - campus sex assault was already taken quite seriously and this kind of incontrovertible evidence would have resulted in multiple expulsions and probably major legal repercussions for the perpetrator and witnesses. Realistically the movie would have been all but over once the protagonist had this video - all she would have had to do is provide it to police and/or post it on social media and she could have destroyed all the targets she had in mind.

The protagonist's 'date rape bait' missions likely would almost never go how she seems to want them to. Likely most of the time nobody would pick her up, sometimes someone would get her a cab or other women would intervene to get horny dudes away from her, other instances would result in guys taking her home, deciding she is too drunk and letting her sleep. And eventually she would get taken home by a legit psycho who wouldn't take no for an answer even after she 'woke up'. She's putting herself in a world of danger here. I almost wish they had gone balls to the wall crazy with the premise and had her serially murder the guys who she goes home with.

The entire denouement at the bachelor party is almost laughably unlikely. What was her plan if her target didn't manage to get loose, or decided not to spontaneously kill her but instead restrain her until help arrived? What if one of the participants was sober and refused her drugged vodka shot, or she got the dose wrong and some of them didn't pass out? What if the target called the police right away and managed to convince them that killing her was self-defence? She did drug 10 men with roofies and had a kit full of torture tools! I enjoy the use/reversal of the 1990's "oops we killed the stripper" trope, but this could have been pulled off better with a more clever plan.

Again, what you get from this movie comes down to some serious suspension of disbelief.

DuePromising Young Woman is a new thiller out now produced by Margot Robbie starring Carey Mulligan as Cassie, a deeply affected and possibly disturbed woman hellbent on seeking vengeance for her friend Nina, who was raped at a frat party. Due to the emotional and psychological affects, Nina drops out of Med school and commits suicide.
The events of Nina's assault and subsequent declining health have deeply affected Cassie and she is tormented by the memory of her once vibrant friend. Cassie wants to move on but she doesn't feel she can do so until all the people involved in Nina's rape and its cover up have been punished. Cassie even takes it a step further by luring unsuspecting men (predators) under the guise of being drunk, (much like Nina was) to teach them a much needed lesson. Cassie's vengeance becomes an obsession, one that threatens to consume her.
PYW is a very emotional movie and it primarily focuses on the dangers women face by using various situations and tropes like the "good guy" and what that even means to men. It takes a look at what kind of man is considered a predator and how physical, financial or social status doesn't dictate who is or isn't. Aside from highlighting sexual assault itself and the after affects, we also get a front row seat into several moral arguments such as rape and intoxication, the credibility of a victim being questioned based on their sexual history and the importance of protecting our sons outweighing the need to protect our daughters. More importantly, how victims can be discredited and ignored by a system put in place to protect society's "promising young men".
Carey Mulligan is a talented actress and she does not disappoint in this film. The visuals of Cassie's wild nights and monotonous days perfectly highlight the character. She is consumed by vengeance and she spends her days being perfectly normal and invisible (almost ghostly) only to come alive and stalk the bars and clubs at night.
I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would honestly. My one criticism is that the ending seemed a little far fetched to me but other than that I felt this movie did the job it promised.
Overall: 7.5/10

Some movies you just need to watch again to get into and this was one of them for me. It's a bold and daring film about a woman that goes from being a woman of great potential to a woman so hellbent on revenge that it destroys her.
