This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a solid action film with good characters and amazing cinematography and action choreography. I'd like to see more films featuring native Americans. The idea of earth's ultimate hunters going up against Predator is a very cool plot device. The only thing that let's it down a bit is the amount of times Predator could have killed the protagonist but let her live. This makes her eventual dominance over him less of a payoff. But other than that, it's incredible. Predator himself is truly awesome in this movie Expand

Not only is PREY a good PREDATOR movie, it's just a good movie in general. Phenomenally well shot, with great action, bringing the Predator down to a low-tech historical period is pretty brilliant. Instead of an arms race, we get to see a character who has to use her wits an ingenuity to defeat one of the deadliest killing machines in the galaxy. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dude, how do you dare to say that men are weak in this movie. Taabe is a freakin' beast, he could've taken the Predator solo (a shame he was injured and ended up dying). The first three men that get killed were taken by surprise by a 7-feet-tall behemoth with alien technology. How the **** do you expect them to have any sort of chance (even though they manage to injure the Predator).

This movie is not a 10, of course, but it's undenyable that it's the best one since the first movie. Just take a look at Predator 2, which was not awful, but didn't bring nothin special until the end of the film, or Predators, which was just a mere 5/10 (and for the love of God let's just forget that The Predator in 2018 was even a concept by itself).

This movie brings the same feeling that the first movie gave us. We cannot be taken by surprise, we already know how the predator is, we know how this works, so they cannot play with the unknown as they did in 1987, and they still managed to release a pretty decent film. The only thing about this film I didn't like is that it felt a bit rushed towards the end, and the explanation they gave about Raphael Andolini's pistol was more of a "meh" (I still prefer the comic version in this), but overall I enjoyed it. And I'll say more, I would have paid to watch this movie in theaters.

It's sad to see how people cannot see a popular franchise release a movie with a female protagonist without the incel army jumping onto it. Yes, guys, there are bad movies with female protagonists, like Birds of Prey, Captain Marvel, and so on, but I recommend you to actually watch this movie and then re-read what you just published here. Is it perfect? No, it is not. Is it a 10 for a movie? Of course not. Is it a 10 for a Predator movie? Not even the first Predator movie was a 10 for his own franchise. Is it watchable and enjoyable? Of course it is, and I love seeing this franchise resurrected with a movie of this level.

Of course in the end, it's a bit unrealistic and over the top, but still smart from the main hero. The acting was superb. I had some problems with the French, most of them were very..pirates and stupid for my taste. The music and sound were crazy good. I especially liked the sound effects. They make this movie tense. I give it 75%. I wouldn't say it's a classic, but it's a better effort. Expand

Amber Midthunder delivers a memorable performance as a Commanche warrior in the making. The emphasis on the hunt, respecting the adversary with careful study, and not blindly charging in with foolish bravado is the spirit of those who prey on the apex Predator, who hunts the hunter. We see some beloved callbacks to the previous installments, but the story's overall arc is fresh and unique from its predecessors. There were times the animal CGI seemed a little rushed, but that's probably the result of a direct-to-stream budget. I was also concerned about unrealistic protagonist arcs (ahem, Rey Skywalker), but there were sufficient realistic setbacks to add credence to the story. The unspoiled magnificence of the northern plains is breathtaking. It is sad to think the beauty of this land, and its original peoples, are now just a memory. All the sadder to see the destructive greed of the early French trapper gangs. We have heard Predators have scoured the galaxy for centuries looking for worthy Prey, it's so rewarding to see one of these chapters play out amongst a tribe of the great warriors. I really hope future filmmakers take a lesson from this excellent work - we don’t need to see cursing, tougher-than-life grunts smashing their way through (Alien 2 exempted), we need sensitive, nuanced portrayals that stay true to canon and precedent. The story is simple and straightforward... a tribe of comanche hunters who cross paths with the Predator in the early 1700s. One of the first things I liked was the cinematography. I think this movie has the best cinematography out of the entire franchise.

This movie represented the predator so well, he is really ruthless and brutal. His code of conduct and how he manipulates his prey are all fascinating and are shown very well.

It's nice to see how Naru (Amber Midthunder) is skilled and intelligent, but still suffers minor defeats throughout the beginning of the story, but she never stops learning from them. She plays to her strengths to fight a stronger and technically superior opponent and believably so. Beautifully done. I hope we get more movies of this quality in the future.

The acceptance of the first part is felt, however, the film is original. Excellent storytelling, chic camera work, acting by the actor does not raise any questions. Overall, I was very pleased with the movie. But, there are also a few moments that slightly, but saddened me. CGI animals look very average in places (although if you take it as a whole, it’s very good). The design of the Predator, especially without the mask, seemed controversial to me.

Blood and gore are displayed, but in the right amount / moments. Visual effects are decent. This is a movie that would have been worth watching on the big screen; too bad Disney had a different opinion. Negatives: Excessive "patriarchal societies are evil" messaging. The first couple of times are more than enough to convey the message. It was certainly the wrong decision to cast a babyface as the lead for an action film. Unless you hoping for a Hunger Games success, and a franchise film is never that, the lead would have been more believable if she was more mature, older, maybe in her mid-30s or early 40s. You know, that experienced female warrior that is not accepted by her tribe as a warrior? But I guess that quite an inexperienced writer such as Patrick Aison was unable to handle that. Same applies to the lack of memorable lines, or generally, what again was the name of the protagonist? What is her personality, other than living some coming-of-age problem at the age of 25? But nevertheless, certainly better than anooooother Alien vs Predator garbage. By the way, I would have made it a 7/10 but I guess I wanted to pump it a bit due to the low-rating spammers who seem not have even watched this film, or the Predator franchise films before. Expand

Naru is a solid lead that works a lot better than most female leads thrown out by Hollywood today due to personal stakes and struggles, while the rest of the supporting cast is good as well. The action is coordinated and shot very well, and the gore is very much there and brutal as it is in almost all Predator movies. This should make for a great film, however budget constraints clearly hold this back from being an epic that can match the original Predator movie. The CGI is definitely restrained and not particularly great when used, the scale feels very small (working both in favor of and against the film), and the forrest sets are definitely bland. Additionally, the pacing is a bit all over the place, with the movie taking its sweet time early on and rushing a bit through the second half. Overall, though, given what the Predator franchise has put out before, there's no doubt Prey is the best since the OG movie. Expand

Not only that, but Dan Trachtenberg executes these ideas with perfect precision and attention to detail.

The best Predator film since the original and my personal favourite movie of 2022 so far.
We really enjoyed it, the action, suspense, its all there just like it was in 1987.

It captures the essentials of the franchise, is enjoyable from start to finish and has a great female protagonist. Lets start at the beginning. The last movie Predator Upgrade was a disappointment so I had low hopes that they turn the tide. Then the reviews came in and the movie earned respect. While not perfect it won a lot of people over even some that were critical before. So I wanted to watch it. While being the 5th instrumental in the franchise it is the first chronological and set in 1719 in the great plains of what is today the USA. The main character is Naru a young Comanche woman who is her tribes healer but wants to become a hunter like her brother Taabe. She trains hard for this to hone her skills but it is an uphill battle against customs. One day she sees a sign in the sky. The clouds shape with thunder in a never seen way. This is the beginning of the story as something dangerous is emerging. I stop here to avoid spoilers. The movie uses the formula of the franchise well. It is again a struggle for survival against a seemingly unstoppable predator. It gets the dread and fear right which is for me the hallmark of the franchise. The main character adds a lot to the story and is fully to my liking. Like I said it is an enjoyable heroes journey from start to finish. Lets continue with the characters. Amber Midthunder is excellent as Naru. She is not a Mary Sue and I fully liked her character and development. Maybe the best main character tied with Arnold Schwarzenegger form the original and sometimes I think she is better as character. The rest of the cast is not as present and except an excellent Dakota Beavers as Tabee, Dane DiLiegro as predator and Michelle Trush as Aruka the other characters are not that memorable (but not weak or misused). Special praise to Narus dog Sarii who is also adorable. A good cast and I repeat the main characters are fully to my liking. The special effects are top notch and they give credit that it is long before the first Predator movie. The Predator uses more primitive technology that is still highly effective and dangerous. The climax battle is also really good. I must also praise the sets and landscapes. It looks beautiful and I am normally not the landscapes guy. I have some small nitpicks. It could be a bit faster at the beginning and other characters could be used a bit more / better. Overall I give an 8/10 and think this will get a classic and earn its place. Not as iconic as the first but those had more time to build a legacy. Maybe it will break even with it some day. Expand

Excellent watch even if I knew she’d make it. So I rooted for the dog more than her really lol. This is definitely better than Predators and The Predator “part 4.”
Prey is about as awesome as The Predator should have been. While The Predator had too many goofy characters with each one the comedy relief. Prey knows to take itself seriously.
Though I admit that one kill of an unarmed man makes no sense. I do like that the movie ties in to Predator 2. Since Danny Glover was handed a gun from the 1700’s.
Which makes me wonder if Naru is eventually killed and the gun is taken by the Predators as a trophy. Since I think it is the gun she learned to use.

Honestly one of the best predator movies since the original. I love the fact that the predator actually matched his weaponry to what he was facing. something that you dont see in most predator movies now a days. The predatory was always supposed to match his weapons to what he was hunting. I also love the re imagining of the weapon set for an earlier breed of predator then what we have seen. It was a bit lazy that they didn't to to this in comanache so lose of points for that. I give it a 10/10 Just to balance out the trolls that give 0/10. I actually give it closer to a 7.5/10.

There's some gorgeous landscape/panoramic style cinematography and it was interesting to get a bit of an insight into the local elders culture, plus the French hunters. Its very atmospheric and it features lots of gripping action scenes. I didn't think it seemed tacky or cheap at all. I highly enjoyed it and would recommend it to others, yes, the only thing I'd point out is it's probably best watched in a darkish room, as most of it is very darkly lit, so it's a bit hard to tell precisely what's going on at times if there's an issue with bright sunlight, glare or reflection. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Points lost for English ? Really ? The French speak Quebecois, but the Indians speaks English ? Comon, it was lazy. The rope thing on the tomahawk either... comon its not a boomrang. There was no way she could have guess the height or spot where the Predator would land in the quicksand to have a headshot... and he lands right there and he happens to forget how his own gun works... Except for these mistakes its an awesome movie. Now hear me out please this is going to get really interesting.

Imagine they speak indian, and its not called PREY, but something else. There is no Sci-fi trailer and you think your going to watch an amazing historic/action movie about Indians like The Revenant or Apocalypto or something. You never show the Predator, only hints through out the movie and at the end you realize you have been watching a Predator movie because you see it only last minutes like ALIEN OR JAWS. What has become of subtlety and the thrill ? Stop showing off the monster like its a Dinosaure all along . Its a Hunter, sophisticated, invisible and Alien. Please incorporate the meaning of these words into the production of the next movie. Thank you.

I love watching it. It's kind of a pet movie for me now. I like putting it on every other day or so just so to watch some scenes while doing other stuff, leaving it on the background. The predator is awesome. Photography is awesome. Ambientation/ localization is awesome. Main characters are awesome. They feel well fleshed out even though not many have screentime.

No woke content at all. Vilifing whites doesn't come out as woke, since it's historically acurate, female main character isn't overpowered just for being a woman. In fact her weakness is used in her favor, and they acknoledge that giving her a proper character arc. She gives her best to become who she wants, she fails, she keeps fighting, she gets afraid, gets overwhelmed, but as every good main hero-ish character, she overcomes her chalenges and comes out bigger.

She's small, human and credible. She's not strong, but that doesn't stop her from being quick-witted and a natural warrior or leader. Her strength is in her personality and her presence. She's smart, and this movie is beaultiful to watch.

The music also has smart decisions, using tribal concepts and components alongside technologiical and electronic sounds. Even the predator's mask matches this setup. Everything is very cohesive.

Prey even changed title to show that it is not just remaking the first movie, but taking it's very very general concept and doing somethind different with it. It isn't "female lead reboot" either, everything is changed here including place and timeframe, not just lead, even predator is not as it was. And for me it really works somehow. It is interesting, fightscenes are fun, cinematography is good. It's not perfect sadly, and being a reboot it's not strictly speaking original thus 8. But I can recommend it, which isn't something I was anticipating to do

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's an enjoyable enough sci-fi, horror. I enjoyed seeing a different Predator in the feral Predator. I see people complaining about the little Comanche girl beating the big monster and sure it's implausable and all but we seem to be forgetting it's science FICTION. Let's be honest here. There's just no way any of the humans in the past movies should have been able to beat an alien with advanced tech. If it were more accurate the movies would have all been 5 minutes long with everyone dead. And I believe that's the point here. Instead of the usual brute force, hail of bullets beating it, it's wit, skill and intelligence that does. I found it to be a fresh take. And yes, the whole movie is a fresh, new perspective. Let's be honest here. How many more times could we sit through the same played out premise?
The feral Predator is one of my favourite of the Yautja so far. The movie has some great visuals. I enjoyed it, mostly. I just found that it took a bit too long to get where it was going. But I suspect that was more on my part than the movie. I went in expecting the usual Predator movie. Where the action kicks off early and keeps going. This is more sedate, until the end and then it really delivers.

It's a decent movie to watch but if you're going in expecting the usual Predator you'll likely be disappointed. If you can watch it on it's own merit and ignore that the protagonist is a little Comanche girl then you'll likely enjoy it. Otherwise, this movie probably isn't for you.

There"Prey" is the beautiful example of prequel which expands the story of the previous parts, closes plot holes, and at the same time does not lose its fullness and interesting story, this is a film that the franchise needed for many years. There is no feminism if the main character in the plot was a man in the story, nothing would have changed at all, don't believe the reviews that talk about the propaganda of feminism. Also there an excellent story that keeps you in suspense until the epilogue, I have to give my respect to the director of the film, the plan that the main character came up with to defeat the alien predator is simply brilliant, the last fight is even more epic than the fight between Schwarzenegger and the predator, this is the best fight with a predator that I have seen in movies about a predator, like all history in general.
It's hard for me to imagine a predator movie better than this one, it's one of the best movies I've ever seen, so I'm not afraid to give it the maximum rating.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately, the movie is pretty bad. It's a shame because of the solid casting. After Predator 2, I always wanted them to make more sequels, but as the sequels came, I regretted wanting to because each sequel was worse than the last. Even though it's bad, Prey is still better than The Predator, because that one is really terrible and it's hard for anyone to make a worse movie even if they tried. The Prey story is nothing special, a simple story about a girl who wants to become a hunter and equal to men. It leans a bit towards modern feminism and how she is always right and can do everything herself, better than men. Even if we ignore that, everything else in the movie is very bad. The CGI animals are a disaster, it's hard for me to describe how hard it was for me to watch the super agility of the ninja wild cat and bear, who like a wrestler, brags about his victory. The character development is very poor and we get from a wannabe hunter who can barely handle a skinny male hunter to a fearless warrior who can handle a giant alien with advanced technology in one day. From a slow and scared girl who supposed to be the best tracker, because she has a dog that follows tracks well, to a parkour professional in one day. She tied the tomahawk to the rope and immediately mastered the technique of this "advanced" weapon, catching the tomahawk perfectly every time she pulled it towards her. With his 45 kilograms, she goes into a fist fight with the Predator, something that not even the professional group of soldiers dared to do in the first Predator movie. Not only that, but she quickly figured out how the Predator's gear worked, and uses a magical and almighty medicine to hide from him. At the end she uses the Predator mask to kill him by setting a trap for him, because she knows that the Predator mask works on auto mode and kills anyone with a weapon, lol
I really wanted to like the movie, and regardless of certain things I noticed in the trailers, I kept an open mind and watched the movie wanting to relax and have fun, but this overdoing and forcing certain things didn't help my brain to remain switched off
And please people stop comparing this to the original Predator and saying it's just as good or even better, they're not even close. Are you serious?

TL;DR - Prey reignited the excitement I had for the predator franchise before Shane black got his hands on it.

Even with a clearly lower budget and some shaky CGI, the very contained and intimate story drops of all the pop culture feel on the Predator and takes it back to the thrill of the 'Hunted becoming the Hunter' aspect of the franchise.

The Good

Praise the high heavens, this was not a woke film even if it has a female lead.

Naru's gender is just an aspect of the story, her own brother supports her wish to be a hunter and pass the Comanche proving ritual. It's just that she was taught to be a healer as women of the tribe have been.

Naru just wants to be more, and she is bad at being a hunter in the beginning we spend some time watching her fail a few times, it made us connect with Amber more in the film.

There is no forced scene of feminism vs the patriarchy, or the excellent amazing female warrior who is not getting a chance because some old Man does not give her a chance cus she has different organs on her body, none of that nonsense.

The 'going against the norm' motivation is presented once at the start and then moves on understanding that the information has been given to you and need not be shoved in your face and down your throat again and again.

This was a movie of family and a bond between a pet and a human having to survive against the odds of a very serious and dangerous threat, the small nature of the story really works here.

The gore was perfect, the Predator had some fun weapons, as the movie is set in 1700's he used downgraded versions of the 90's predator weapons which was an absolute fun watch. He slices, dices, pounds, decapitates it was friggin amazing.

One aspect of the Prey film taken from Shane's The Predator movie is that there is a group in the movie that are aware of the Predator presence.

They do not know what it is just that there is something unnatural hunting and try to catch the Predator leading to one of the most ruthless action scene in the movie where the Predator fcks everyone up in imaginative ways with the aforementioned fun weapons he uses.

There were some unique story beats that stand apart from the original films, the terrain and Naru's knowledge of the forest really play a part in the final confrontation.

This was such a refreshing watch to see a female lead in 2022 to have to learn how to deal with a threat rather than just being magically better at everything. I was right there with Naru/Amber every second rooting for her, feeling her desperation, watching her slowly get better at being the Hunter after repeated confrontations, and watching the predator slowly get broken down with every next hunt.

One of the best scenes is the movie involve some of the most dodgy CGI in the movie is of a bear vs the predator. I love it even with noticeably bad CGI.

I love that what I always feel about CGI applies here, that even if you don't have the biggest budget for photorealism, using your SFX in imaginative ways will always work.

The cinematography for the film was amazing, getting in some great locations, good lighting, Dan did a great job with what he was given and I will definitely be keeping an eye on his work in the future.

The Bad

The biggest problem I have with this film was why was this released on streaming, this movie needed to be released on the big screen.

There was some dodgy CGI which kind of explains the release on Hulu decision, but the CGI is used in creative ways and does not really affect the movie that much.

Unfortunately even if the movie is not a 'Woke' movie, the limited marketing and trailer make it feel like that, I hope people give it a chance regardless of the stupid marketing decision.

Conclusion

I had no hope for this movie, Shane's work broke me and Predators 2010 was my fall back for a watchable sequel other than the first 2 original legendary ones.

Prey is now on my list for a great follow up to the Predator franchise re-invigorating my love for the Yautja lore and hope for more of these types of projects in the future.

Or eating some flowers and the predator cant detect her body temperature!!! LOL

the direction was great but everything else was too dull like the conversation and story and characters.

So do not believe the hype this is just another letdown for the franchise, just watch the one with Arnold and forget about this one its a waste of time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Well it's a Predator movie so there isn't really that much to explain. One difference with this latest entry is the fact there aren't two different tribes of Predators runnin' around. This time we're going back to the original in terms of plot and tone (although they said that about 'Predators'). This time it's Predator versus primal man...woman...girl. This time it's back to booby traps, mud, and hunting. This time it's a Predator versus a Native American girl, yup, welcome to 2023.

Anyway the main crux (or carrot) for this entry is the fact it's a Predator vs. Native Americans. To be honest this sounds like the perfect idea for a Dark Horse graphic novel series for sure, but a full-blown movie? I just find it cheesy because you can swap out the Indians and use ANY period warriors and it would be exactly the same. Predator vs. Vikings. Predator vs. Knights. Predator vs. Samurai. Predator vs. Spartans. Predator vs. Mongols etc...The list goes and every idea would literally be the same albeit the locations obviously.

And here lies the problem, this movie isn't actually very original at all and once again pales in comparison to both the 1987 original AND the 1991 sequel (I said what I said). The plot is completely predictable naturally. The young female (with an awkward American accent) wants to be a warrior but the rest of the tribe poo poo this idea (present-day social commentary!), so she has to prove herself. At first she fails but after much perseverance and the arrival of a Predator she manages to do just that. Along the way we get various callbacks to the original including dialog, shots, and scenes. The main difference is this is a prequel so the Predator is using dated tech and for some reason looks completely different...again.

But yeah I wasn't really impressed here. The movie is surprisingly dark so you actually don't see that much gore. I get that they tried to make it look natural with natural light in the wilderness and adding to the suspense factor, but it didn't work for me. The movie wasn't suspenseful and I couldn't see a great deal because a lot happens at night. There is gore but it's almost entirely CGI which is just pathetic I'm sorry. This is why older flicks are so much better, real blood effects, practical effects, squibs etc...This is why Paul Verhoeven movies are so God damn epic. You don't ever really see the Predator's face that well again because much is set at night, and I didn't really like the new design. His mouth is HUGE! Takes up half his face and his eyes are almost on either side of his face! Didn't like the bone-esque looking mask either. Couldn't really see how it stayed on his face to be honest.

I also didn't like seeing all these wild animals getting killed frankly, kinda depressing. I get the gist of the Predator obviously but I really don't see why he would be killing wolves or snakes (I get the bear). The Predator is an intelligent species, it can tell the difference between another creature being a threat and another creature merely hunting for its own survival, right? So why would it kill these animals unless they actually attacked him, especially creatures that are so small. I mean, does the Predator have to kill every flippin' predator species it comes across in order to prove itself or conquer that particular planet??

Around the halfway mark a load of French voyageurs turn up because of course they do. Naturally these guys all turn out to be a really nasty bunch of White guys (of course) and cannon fodder for the Predator. At first it seems like there's only a handful of them but as the Predator starts wiping them out their number seems to grow rapidly (cannon fodder required for action sequences as there aren't many Natives and the Natives are of course goodies). Once again the visuals are disappointing because you don't actually see any of the kills and all the blood is CLEARLY CGI. It's also around this point where our female protagonist turns out to be a martial artist of sorts and is able to take out multiple grown men at the same time...ugh!!

So yeah...overall this was a mixed bag for me. In general the visuals are nice with some lovely atmospheric location shots. The Natives all look and sound authentic as do the French men whilst the Predator certainly sounds good and comes with those nice infrared optics. Alas the movie is packed with terrible CGI, bad acting, dim visuals at key moments, and the Predator doesn't look as good as it should. They keep changing the look but the original simply cannot be beaten so why try? The real issue here is the movie is simply another retread of the same old formula but merely with Native Americans. They have to move this franchise forward, maybe into space? Maybe onto the Predator home world? They cannot keep doing the same thing over and over geez!

The funniest part is when she is given the flint lock pistol that is awarded to another character in the future, meaning the predators came back and destroyed her tribe anyway lol.

Better than The Predator which isn't saying much, but still nowhere near the quality in all senses of Predator 1 and 2.

Had Naru fought any of the previous Predators in the previous she would've had zero chances, with Native-American magical medicine or not. She was given a far inferior Predator to fight, inferior in technology, physical capabilities, and intelligence. This movie was rigged from the start, and it has almost zero character development. You only know why Naru wants to be a hunter, but other than that there's really nothing else to know about her.

Dutch from the first movie he started out cocky and confident because he was special forces and had a team he knew very well backing him up. And by the end of the movie you can see in his face how much that ordeal had changed him, and you can see the pain in his eyes of the loss of his team and friends. Naru seemed like an outcast in her own tribe and even though she loses one of the two people that show any concern for her, she still manages to smile in the end as if she felt nothing and only her goals mattered.

The movie starts a little slow, increases in pace and becomes actually interesting, but it loses at the finish line. This could've been a worthy sucessor to Predator 2, and even explained one specific scene. But all the opportunities are lost, leaving you with a good enough movie to pass the time, but nowhere a sequel to the first two movies. In my opinion even Predators was better than Prey.

Best complete Predator movie since the original. This one follows the evolution of a Comanche warrior (Naru) within her tribe. Along with her on the adventure is her awesome dog sidekick as they track and are hunted by the Predator who has landed on earth for the thrill of hunting all animals, not just humans. The story and narrative pacing moves very well and there are fun period twists and introductions of new characters and side quests and storylines. Great Easter eggs and dialogue odes from the original two movies as well. In some instances the movie is let down visually by subpar visual effects and action choreography but overall does not take much away from its enjoyment - you're able to bend a little as an audience. Fun quick watch with a great climax, hoping it reinvigorates the Predator franchise.
