I had to get past the first few minutes, which threatened a YA story and pulling punches. It's neither, there's plenty of gore. Tight running time, too.

I urge anyone who is planning to watch this movie to watch the Comanchee language version, which can be found in the extras tab for Prey on Disney+
This is one of best movies I've seen and the best Predator movie by an order of magnitude.

Mad Max Fury Road type protagonist vs Predator w a dash of Apocalypto. Idiots mad because extremely athletic & smart woman out wits an arrogant predator who doesn't fully see her as a threat (literally & metaphorically). If it had treated her like an equal earlier it would easily kill her but it realizes to late. Also, best physical warriors are men in the film especially her brother; he almost solos the predator. Anyway, very well written & tight script, strong direction, and crisp sound/music. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. HOW TO SPOT A FAKE REVIEW 101: Notice they can't name a scene in the movie that didn't appear in the first trailer. Notice they use key Tucker-terms like "woke" and "mary-sue" and "100 lb girl." They HAVE to use those terms in each post because the hive-mind commands.
There's a lot of first day low score reviews on here of people who obviously didn't watch the movie, but are basing their reviews off of trailers and internet rage-boy hive-mind opinion.
"They shouldn't be speaking English they should be speaking Comanche!" There's a Comanche dub available.
How can a 100lb girl beat something that Arnold could barely kill?
Well, that question, my friend, is a multi-part answer. A) This predator is the smallest out of any predator we have ever seen (is it younger?) and has less advanced technology too. (300 years prior) It has no energy weapons like the shoulder plasma launcher we know and love and it's cloaking device fails pretty early in the movie.
B) By the time Naru gets around to fighting this predator, it has been seriously mauled by a grizzly, speared and shot by some Comanche, trapped and shot multiple times by a group of trappers and... my favorite part..., seriously f'ed up by Naru's brother.
C) One of the reason Naru survives instead of the dozens of others that go up against the predator is because she's smart not strong. The first time she could run up and attack it like like her Comanche warrior brethren. But she runs instead. The second time she could surprise it, but she hides instead. That brings me up to the second big complaint I'm reading about people who actually haven't seen this movie. Naru is a mary-sue that is perfect and better than the men in the movie. Is she? The first time we see her hunting deer... she fails. Then we see her hunting rabbit and she fails until she makes some improvements to her weapons. She tries to get the jump on a grizzly and her bow string snaps and she can only run for her life. She also just barely escapes a quick sand of mud.. quick mud? We all have seen The Star Wars Sequel trilogy... this is not how a mary-sue works.
And these people giving 0s and 1s: If you've seen the movie you don't give it at least SOME props for its unique setting? Or the amazing cinematography? Or the new music? Or at least Naru's brother who steals the show? Or this predator's new arsenal? Some people be trying real hard to hate everything in life.
Things I really liked: many of the people that went up against this predator did some serious damage to it, from the grizzly that drew first blood, to the second Comanche warrior that damaged it's cloaking device, to Naru's brother that damn near killed the thing. Even the french trappers got the jump on it, but when it took them a minute to reload their muskets after he blocked their first shots I had to laugh out loud. Got to love that historical accuracy. TLDR: I had a blast with this movie and it's definitely the best Predator movie since the original. Watch it and get your own opinion... avoid the hive mind.

Lead actress and her brother are doing great job portraying their characters and the movie itself is really intense. I had a real blast, only downside was ugly cgi bear but even that was ok because his fight with predator was quite exciting. Also new look of alien creature was intimidating would love if it turned out to be a different species from the ones from other movies, crossover could have nice potential. Expand

No, what we have here is a throughly entertaining film, with a believable and likeable lead character and some fantastic set pieces. The trailer may have been underwhelming. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great movie . Good history . Good pacing . Good atmosphere . And bloody as hell. What’s the **** problem with the protagonist be a woman ???? The actress is very good and if you see the first 2 movies you know that all you need to beat a predator is brains not muscle . The Dutch itself have to use brain to beat the first predator . How I say the movie is really good and deserve respect among the predator franchise ok ? Stop saying that the girl is weak and skinny . If you are like me and live in the eighties and saw the first predator you know the real atmosphere of the movie and all you need to beat the predator is brains .
The movie make some connections with the others two like the gun that was give to Danny glover in the predator 2 . Overall this is a really good prequel of predator prequel and worth watch for sure . Don’t listen all the haters that give bad reviews of this movie because they no nothing about the predator movie.
Thanks for all that make this movie real good like the first and second one .

Honestly one of the best predator movies since the original. I love the fact that the predator actually matched his weaponry to what he was facing. something that you dont see in most predator movies now a days. The predatory was always supposed to match his weapons to what he was hunting. I also love the re imagining of the weapon set for an earlier breed of predator then what we have seen. It was a bit lazy that they didn't to to this in comanache so lose of points for that. I give it a 10/10 Just to balance out the trolls that give 0/10. I actually give it closer to a 7.5/10.

I love watching it. It's kind of a pet movie for me now. I like putting it on every other day or so just so to watch some scenes while doing other stuff, leaving it on the background. The predator is awesome. Photography is awesome. Ambientation/ localization is awesome. Main characters are awesome. They feel well fleshed out even though not many have screentime.

No woke content at all. Vilifing whites doesn't come out as woke, since it's historically acurate, female main character isn't overpowered just for being a woman. In fact her weakness is used in her favor, and they acknoledge that giving her a proper character arc. She gives her best to become who she wants, she fails, she keeps fighting, she gets afraid, gets overwhelmed, but as every good main hero-ish character, she overcomes her chalenges and comes out bigger.

She's small, human and credible. She's not strong, but that doesn't stop her from being quick-witted and a natural warrior or leader. Her strength is in her personality and her presence. She's smart, and this movie is beaultiful to watch.

The music also has smart decisions, using tribal concepts and components alongside technologiical and electronic sounds. Even the predator's mask matches this setup. Everything is very cohesive.

What a bozo. The movie is amazing and leaves you on the edge of your seat for the whole movie and for the most part, the movie is getting amazing reviews, don't listen to anyone in this section. The only people I've seen give this movie a bad review are haters who either A)haven't watched the movie B)called it woke just because the protagonist happens to be female C)hates change and wants it to be almost the exact movie as the original yet if the directors did that, those same people would hate on it for not being original and unique in its own sense. You just can't please some people but trust me when I say this is a great movie, better than the past 3 movies in the franchise. Usually I respect other people's opinions but every negative review I've seen in this section has been either completely biased or just sexist, instead of calling it "woke" when ya'll clearly don't know the definition of "woke", just admit you hate female main characters or maybe just DON'T watch the movie if you think it's "woke". There"Prey" is the beautiful example of prequel which expands the story of the previous parts, closes plot holes, and at the same time does not lose its fullness and interesting story, this is a film that the franchise needed for many years. There is no feminism if the main character in the plot was a man in the story, nothing would have changed at all, don't believe the reviews that talk about the propaganda of feminism. Also there an excellent story that keeps you in suspense until the epilogue, I have to give my respect to the director of the film, the plan that the main character came up with to defeat the alien predator is simply brilliant, the last fight is even more epic than the fight between Schwarzenegger and the predator, this is the best fight with a predator that I have seen in movies about a predator, like all history in general.

I'd like to see more films featuring native Americans. The idea of earth's ultimate hunters going up against Predator is a very cool plot device. The only thing that let's it down a bit is the amount of times Predator could have killed the protagonist but let her live. This makes her eventual dominance over him less of a payoff. But other than that, it's incredible. Predator himself is truly awesome in this movie Expand

It has a simple plot that is more like the original than any of the sequels that followed it, but to me that isn't a downside. Some excellent camera work and direction make for a lot of freeze frame moments where the composition of the scene really shines- more than I would have expected from an action movie. I wish it had not been recorded in English originally. There is a Comanche dub, I understand, but I would have preferred an English dub for the people who wanted it with Comanche as the original dialog with English subtitles. That's the only thing that I didn't like. Expand

Prey is about as awesome as The Predator should have been. While The Predator had too many goofy characters with each one the comedy relief. Prey knows to take itself seriously.
Though I admit that one kill of an unarmed man makes no sense. I do like that the movie ties in to Predator 2. Since Danny Glover was handed a gun from the 1700’s.
Which makes me wonder if Naru is eventually killed and the gun is taken by the Predators as a trophy. Since I think it is the gun she learned to use.

So many great ideas, nice visual, like great new elements in the design for the Predator. Still, Predator 1-2 is better for me. Possibly I could go on long why but probably main reason for me is because in Predator 1-2 we had not just cool action scenes but also short but many little silly scenes with some smooth one-liners we still like to quote from P1-2.
I miss this absurd, silly, morbid scenes, & one-liners from all of the new, latest predator movies, so not only from PREY. Anyway, in overall PREY is a decent addition for the Predator Universe, really slick movie with some really great action scenes. 9/10 for me in a nutshell, I enjoyed & definitely will rewatch in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a fresh take on the Predator Universe and I really appreciated it. From the lack of SUPER advance technology due to the timeline to the very unique take on the 1700-1800s, it really is a good movie. The predator was very unique and brutal, as is needed, and the main character although sometimes a little bland was still pretty well wrote. Expand

It was certainly the wrong decision to cast a babyface as the lead for an action film. Unless you hoping for a Hunger Games success, and a franchise film is never that, the lead would have been more believable if she was more mature, older, maybe in her mid-30s or early 40s. You know, that experienced female warrior that is not accepted by her tribe as a warrior? But I guess that quite an inexperienced writer such as Patrick Aison was unable to handle that. Same applies to the lack of memorable lines, or generally, what again was the name of the protagonist? What is her personality, other than living some coming-of-age problem at the age of 25? But nevertheless, certainly better than anooooother Alien vs Predator garbage. By the way, I would have made it a 7/10 but I guess I wanted to pump it a bit due to the low-rating spammers who seem not have even watched this film, or the Predator franchise films before. Expand

Amber Midthunder delivers a memorable performance as a Commanche warrior in the making. The emphasis on the hunt, respecting the adversary with careful study, and not blindly charging in with foolish bravado is the spirit of those who prey on the apex Predator, who hunts the hunter. We see some beloved callbacks to the previous installments, but the story's overall arc is fresh and unique from its predecessors. There were times the animal CGI seemed a little rushed, but that's probably the result of a direct-to-stream budget. I was also concerned about unrealistic protagonist arcs (ahem, Rey Skywalker), but there were sufficient realistic setbacks to add credence to the story. The unspoiled magnificence of the northern plains is breathtaking. It is sad to think the beauty of this land, and its original peoples, are now just a memory. All the sadder to see the destructive greed of the early French trapper gangs. We have heard Predators have scoured the galaxy for centuries looking for worthy Prey, it's so rewarding to see one of these chapters play out amongst a tribe of the great warriors. I really hope future filmmakers take a lesson from this excellent work - we don’t need to see cursing, tougher-than-life grunts smashing their way through (Alien 2 exempted), we need sensitive, nuanced portrayals that stay true to canon and precedent. You get one of the best SciFi movies in years and the best Predator movie since the original. Naru is wiser and stronger than anyone realizes but hasn't had her true hunt yet and unfortunately her greatest test also happens to be something humanity itself isn't ready for; What follows from here is Predator vs anyone foolish enough to get in its way.. you want blood, gore, dismemberment, and unfeeling brutality? You got it, The Predator doesn't discriminate here and Naru sees it all happen herself and plans and learns from the battles of the fallen. I will not spoil the rest but the ending and final battle between Naru and The Predator is satisfying and feels earned and by the end you will feel you've gone on a journey with her as she rises to the top of her tribe and proves without a shadow of a doubt that she's a Predator herself. All these people complaining who have maybe just seen the trailer or the start of the film, get a life. She doesn't defeat the predator with her bare hands, she literally says she only wins because it doesn't see her as a threat. It's the whole point! Her brother's shown to be the better warrior but he still loses because skill and strength aren't enough!

It makes me sad to see this didn't get a feature release because it's a great film, awesome action scenes, plays with expectations, has nods to fans without being in your face about it and the predator in this is the most brutal version so far. Was expecting this to be good but it was even better than what I thought it would be.

This should net a lot more work for the talent involved. It's a solid genre picture that delivers well on the premise of Predator vs. Native American tribe, which is a very cool idea. Sometimes cool screenplay ideas don't survive the rigorous detail required to flesh them out into actual films, but this one manages by keeping true to what makes the idea cool and paying it off repeatedly. Prey could achieve cult classic status particularly due to its unfortunate distribution fate. Without getting into the corporate politics of why this wasn't released in theaters, I'll just say that it's a theater-worthy experience unlike many movies which wind up with a similar fate. Expand

It captures the essentials of the franchise, is enjoyable from start to finish and has a great female protagonist. Lets start at the beginning. The last movie Predator Upgrade was a disappointment so I had low hopes that they turn the tide. Then the reviews came in and the movie earned respect. While not perfect it won a lot of people over even some that were critical before. So I wanted to watch it. While being the 5th instrumental in the franchise it is the first chronological and set in 1719 in the great plains of what is today the USA. The main character is Naru a young Comanche woman who is her tribes healer but wants to become a hunter like her brother Taabe. She trains hard for this to hone her skills but it is an uphill battle against customs. One day she sees a sign in the sky. The clouds shape with thunder in a never seen way. This is the beginning of the story as something dangerous is emerging. I stop here to avoid spoilers. The movie uses the formula of the franchise well. It is again a struggle for survival against a seemingly unstoppable predator. It gets the dread and fear right which is for me the hallmark of the franchise. The main character adds a lot to the story and is fully to my liking. Like I said it is an enjoyable heroes journey from start to finish. Lets continue with the characters. Amber Midthunder is excellent as Naru. She is not a Mary Sue and I fully liked her character and development. Maybe the best main character tied with Arnold Schwarzenegger form the original and sometimes I think she is better as character. The rest of the cast is not as present and except an excellent Dakota Beavers as Tabee, Dane DiLiegro as predator and Michelle Trush as Aruka the other characters are not that memorable (but not weak or misused). Special praise to Narus dog Sarii who is also adorable. A good cast and I repeat the main characters are fully to my liking. The special effects are top notch and they give credit that it is long before the first Predator movie. The Predator uses more primitive technology that is still highly effective and dangerous. The climax battle is also really good. I must also praise the sets and landscapes. It looks beautiful and I am normally not the landscapes guy. I have some small nitpicks. It could be a bit faster at the beginning and other characters could be used a bit more / better. Overall I give an 8/10 and think this will get a classic and earn its place. Not as iconic as the first but those had more time to build a legacy. Maybe it will break even with it some day. Expand

IGNORE THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! THIS FILM IS ACTION-PACKED AWESOMENESS!

People who are putting bad and negative reviews most probably haven't even watched the film, they probably just watched the trailer or just first 30 minutes of the film which was a bit weaker in my opinion, but it gets better afterwards.

The Predator fights a wild Bear, now that was badass! This film is really awesome. It had everything I was hoping to see in a Predator movie.

The story was really well paced, although I think first 30 minutes could have been a little bit more polished, but no complaint cause after that the film just starts giving you what you've been waiting for to see in a Predator movie. There's a lot of surprises and awesome badass, action sequences that feels really well thought out and I couldn't help but notice 'The Revenant' vives, which is a good thing of course. the ending was a bit rushed, could've been better. The Comanche tribe shown in the film felt too modern which made the feel of the film a bit dull.

Some of the best artThe only thing that really stuck out for me was the animal CGI isn't very well done. I'm not sure if it was a budget thing or they just didn't care, but the Predator and everything about how this one functioned ruled. Some of the best art design all around for everyone in the cast and especially the Predator. On the positive side the movie does not overstay its welcome. Sadly though it was over before I felt it really started. There is even a key moment that can be missed in the animated end credits that explains how the flintlock pistol makes its way through the ages. (Because it recaps the movie it's an almost blink and you'll miss it moment right as that ends.) The pacing and narrative is done very nicely as this is a really great example of showing verses telling the story. However, this is one film where I felt like a little more dialogue would have been welcome. There were a few confusing moments near the end of the film that I had to guess as to what was happening. If you are a fan of the Predator franchise then I don't think this disappoints. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ignore the negative reviews completely. They're all written by thirteen year old virgins who hate women and think anti-slavery laws are 'wokism'. You know the type. None of them have seen a second of the film.

In truth there's nothing woke about it at all; the female character is convincingly inexperienced at first and manages to get by in fights by virtue of her opponents considering her non-threatening. Her brother is probably the most badass character in the whole film. 'Woke' is a meaningless word these days.

So the reason this film is so good is because it pares the mythology of the Predator back to the minimum: one Predator against the world. No Pred-dogs, no giant Predators, no Alien hybrids - just one unbelievably badass Yautja that carves its way through everything. It's an extremely simple setup, there's the barest hint of a plot - young comanche girl is underestimated and patronised by her tribe, she wants to complete the rite of passage that would allow her to become a hunter but is held back be everyone else, even her brother, who is an extremely successful hunter already. Predator arrives on the scene...all hell breaks loose. Add French colonialists into the mix and you've basically got an excuse for the Pred to chew through bodies in various inventively cool-looking ways.

One thing that's notable about Dan Trachtenberg(the writer and director of this movie, as well as the brilliantly entertaining The Boys tv show) is how good he is at conveying physicality in his work. He has an eye for a striking action shot and a brilliantly effective command of gore and violence. There are countless fantastic shots in this film; it really is just a long sequence of fantastic action scenes so don't come into it expecting any particularly good worldbuilding or characterisation(Why would you?) - what it does is dazzle you over and over with scenes that succeed in making the Predator genuinely scary and cool again. There's a particular scene early on that made me laugh out loud and replay it at least three times before I moved on: it's the reveal scene of the Predator(who has never looked cooler either by the way; with a face mask that looks like it was modeled on something from a Benicio del Toro movie and a lean, swaggering gait - the rendering on his face is excellent, which alas can't be said for some of the other CG in the movie) as it fights an eight foot tall grizzly bear. The bear and the Predator wrestle for a few seconds, the former lashing and biting at the Yautja as streaks of lurid green blood flash down his partially invisible body. The bear pushes the Predator down into the river and turns away assuming victory. Then we have a low camera angle as the Predator rises from the river slowly, not even facing the bear, which, enraged, charges at him to finish the job. We see it running at the Yautja as the latter looks at the camera, its invisibility camouflage flickering on and off ineffectively. And in one languid but swift movement the Predator step-rolls aside from the bear's path and with a ferocious right hook smashes it unconscious. It's an absolutely majestic shot, improved further when we see the camouflaged Predator hoiking up the bear's huge carcass onto its back and carrying it away, the grizzly's body seeming to hang in the air.

The film is full of moments like this. There are numerous scenes devoted to the wonderful tech that the Predator carries with it, including a ridiculous hunting net that pinions its luckless prey to the ground and shrinks around it, its razor sharp strings slicing through them and turning them into mulch. But the best is the fantastic Sekiro-like metal parasol-shield-blade it carries(and uses mainly to decapitate the villainous colonialists). Trachtenberg is just so good at this kind of stuff - and equally good at making you feel the weight and momentum of the violence, the Predator leaping towards the protagonist with such speed and ferocity you wince at how close it gets.

In all honesty it's a pretty predictable movie. Wisely it's not trying to be the next Annihilation or Arrival. It's an extremely lean action movie with a skeleton of a plot and barely any characterisation. But what it aims to do it does brilliantly and it has some of the most punchy visceral action you'll see anywhere right now. And perhaps most importantly it succeeds in making the Yautja a credible action movie concern again, for the first time since the original film. After dog aliens that play fetch with grenades and lanky 'mega' predators that consider ten year olds with Asperger's to be worthy opponents, this film reminds us just what a one-alien army these things are when they're portrayed as they should be. Given how hit and miss the films have been it's probably too much to hope that this will result in a sea change in quality for the franchise, but all I can say is if Trachtenberg has any interest at all in making a sequel they should bite his hand off.

I have not watched a Predator movie before but this convinced me to give the other installments in the franchise a try. This movie has the gore and action scenes to make you cream your pants. I definitely did when the predator alien used his tech to slaughter everyone. I admire the amount of detail to make this prequel unique but at the same time an homage to these types of films. Expand

The movie was awesome. Naru was likeable and imperfect but still kicked ass. Taab was great as well. The Predator was cool. Wish he was little more lo-tech since it was in the past. TL;DR - Prey reignited the excitement I had for the predator franchise before Shane black got his hands on it.

Even with a clearly lower budget and some shaky CGI, the very contained and intimate story drops of all the pop culture feel on the Predator and takes it back to the thrill of the 'Hunted becoming the Hunter' aspect of the franchise.

The Good

Praise the high heavens, this was not a woke film even if it has a female lead.

Naru's gender is just an aspect of the story, her own brother supports her wish to be a hunter and pass the Comanche proving ritual. It's just that she was taught to be a healer as women of the tribe have been.

Naru just wants to be more, and she is bad at being a hunter in the beginning we spend some time watching her fail a few times, it made us connect with Amber more in the film.

There is no forced scene of feminism vs the patriarchy, or the excellent amazing female warrior who is not getting a chance because some old Man does not give her a chance cus she has different organs on her body, none of that nonsense.

The 'going against the norm' motivation is presented once at the start and then moves on understanding that the information has been given to you and need not be shoved in your face and down your throat again and again.

This was a movie of family and a bond between a pet and a human having to survive against the odds of a very serious and dangerous threat, the small nature of the story really works here.

The gore was perfect, the Predator had some fun weapons, as the movie is set in 1700's he used downgraded versions of the 90's predator weapons which was an absolute fun watch. He slices, dices, pounds, decapitates it was friggin amazing.

One aspect of the Prey film taken from Shane's The Predator movie is that there is a group in the movie that are aware of the Predator presence.

They do not know what it is just that there is something unnatural hunting and try to catch the Predator leading to one of the most ruthless action scene in the movie where the Predator fcks everyone up in imaginative ways with the aforementioned fun weapons he uses.

There were some unique story beats that stand apart from the original films, the terrain and Naru's knowledge of the forest really play a part in the final confrontation.

This was such a refreshing watch to see a female lead in 2022 to have to learn how to deal with a threat rather than just being magically better at everything. I was right there with Naru/Amber every second rooting for her, feeling her desperation, watching her slowly get better at being the Hunter after repeated confrontations, and watching the predator slowly get broken down with every next hunt.

One of the best scenes is the movie involve some of the most dodgy CGI in the movie is of a bear vs the predator. I love it even with noticeably bad CGI.

I love that what I always feel about CGI applies here, that even if you don't have the biggest budget for photorealism, using your SFX in imaginative ways will always work.

The cinematography for the film was amazing, getting in some great locations, good lighting, Dan did a great job with what he was given and I will definitely be keeping an eye on his work in the future.

The Bad

The biggest problem I have with this film was why was this released on streaming, this movie needed to be released on the big screen.

There was some dodgy CGI which kind of explains the release on Hulu decision, but the CGI is used in creative ways and does not really affect the movie that much.

Unfortunately even if the movie is not a 'Woke' movie, the limited marketing and trailer make it feel like that, I hope people give it a chance regardless of the stupid marketing decision.

Conclusion

I had no hope for this movie, Shane's work broke me and Predators 2010 was my fall back for a watchable sequel other than the first 2 original legendary ones.

Prey is now on my list for a great follow up to the Predator franchise re-invigorating my love for the Yautja lore and hope for more of these types of projects in the future.

Best take on predator in decades. Anti-woke soldiers just love spreading their misery. Don’t listen to them, and enjoy the film.

It's a pretty solid movie in the right setting. The first really good Predator movie since the first release in franchise. Sure it has some lows, but in general that one is pretty well done.
