This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely a nostalgia trip. It makes me want to rewatch the whole series over again. There were some cheesy scenes but they were the good kind of cheesy. Amazing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! is an amazing movie with interesting characters, decent music, stunning visuals with an objective that keep the movie moving. The movie, despite many people’s beliefs, is not just a retelling of the original anime, on the contrary, the movie is its own movie with similar elements but overall does not end up feeling anything like the original anime. The movie also has very emotional sections that hit there mark beautifully because of the more serious tone it takes, for example, the Luxray scene was one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen, Pikachu thunderbolt near the end was filled with so much sadness and anger and it hit me in the feels and Charmander getting rejected hit harder than the original ever did. The music does its job but never caught my eye although the beautiful piano redo of the original theme song and the original track at the end is amazing. The two companions although not fully explored adds a lot to the story even if the backstories are vague, this although to some people may be frustrating it makes me want to learn about these characters and gets me intrigued for a sequel. The character cross is an amazing rival/ villain reminding me a lot of a more dark and serious Paul, I believe this is one of the strongest characters as his lack of emotion creates an unsettling vibe. The main character Ash is… well…. Ash nothing really changes. His the same old reckless kind of stupid Ash although Charizard obeys him which I actually appreciate as in the original anime it was more annoying than funny. Team Rocket does not do much but when they are on screen it leaves some comedy relief although still, they did not do much. The visuals clearly take inspiration from the sun and moon anime which makes sense as it is in that generation but this leaves a few weird movements but nothing that really takes you out of the immersion plus everything else is amazing from the battles to most of the other general movement, making the visuals stunning.

The plot although simple does keep the movie from feeling pointless even if it is a little weak but just like the anime and games this movie focuses on the journey rather than the destination.

On to the bad stuff which there is very little of, the start of the movie although some people found it the best I thought it was slow and boring although that is because I have seen that episode countless times, the movie started to pick up steam after the intro credits however.

Caterpie was pointless and did not add anything to the story and did not hit any emotional strings as it had about 1 minute of overall screen time therefore not hitting the mark at all.

Pikachu talking was cringy and made no sense as Pikachu did not want to go in its ball before Ash befriended him, it would have just been fine and better to add subtitles, although this last about 5 seconds which really isn’t very much therefore not something to get worked up about. In conclusion, although the movie has some hiccups that stops it from getting a perfect 10 these do not hinder the overall experience, making an amazing movie that has one of the most emotional credits I have ever seen. (This is coming from a person that has seen all of the Pokémon movies and majority of the anime, has played next to every game and has taken a crack out of the card game so this movie had a lot of expectations to live up to)

The story is choppy, jumping from random event to random event, and by the end I'm still not sure what the goal is. Dialog is cringy throughout. There are characters and Pokémon who get screen time but have no role in developing the plot, as if the writers got sidetracked or forgot to tie it all together.
Worst of all, they broke several rules no Pokémon fan would ever want broken. Watch it and you'll see what I mean - or don't. Actually, really don't. You're not missing out.

Unless you're 5 years old I can't imagine you would enjoy this movie. Being someone who has grown up with Pokemon, I did not find much to like here if anything. For a good portion of the movie I was struggling to figure out what the point was as we jumped from scene to scene seemingly at random. It doesn't seem like they knew what they wanted this movie to be, and it shows, as they try to cram in a reboot of Ash's journey, new Pokemon that didn't exist back in the day, some ineffective drama, and a surprisingly little amount of nostalgia. In some instances the change of scenes are down right jarring. The movie is simply trying to do too much and it truly suffers for it. I will give credit to the animators as they've done a beautiful job, but, I did not like the muted colour palette they used for Ash's clothing. Originally his hat was a very bright red, but, now it is practically maroon. I also can't stand the new symbol on Ash's hat. Why did they even need to change it? This may sound trivial, but, this is the main character we're talking about so I had to look at this ugly redesign in almost every frame of the movie. To sum up, this is a children's movie and there's nothing wrong with that, but, when your fans have had 20 years to grow up and since this movie is a celebration of the anime's beginning, maybe it should be enjoyable to those of us who actually watched those episodes. Kids these days will not be able to appreciate this the same way a long time fan such as myself would and now we cannot even do this. Expand

A fun reimagining of the first season of the classic anime. Better stoned, especially when Pikachu starts talking.

This was an interesting take on the start of the series. Ash and Pikachu still show what true friendship is. Of course there is stuff that make no sense. Also Team Rocket had no point in the movie.

But I feel it was alright overall.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review appeared to be way longer than I actually expected.
New adventures for Ash, the luckiest boy in the whole Pokémon universe. He just can't stop crossing the way of many legendary Pokémons, some unseen by many people who even studied their genesis and existence. Just in this movie Ash sees Ho-Oh, Suicune and Entei! And we don't even speak here about the other movies... But this one highlights an impressive number of different Pokémons. We can see them interact with each others and their trainers. Nothing more to say about them unless that their sizes are respected (Entei is actually 6'9 tall in opposite to what we witnessed in 'Pokémon 3: The Movie' (2001)). Credits are amazing since we can see all the characters of the series appear. They could have smiled anyway. Instead they all have that 'what am I doing here?' face.

Soundtrack is great and has some winks to the games by using some classic melodies. Special effects are good in overall but some are just lame at some point of the movie. Scenario is classic but contains way too much inconstant flips: the sky is beautiful, then suddenly grey, and they clear blue again for nothing. These are disturbing inconsistencies. However the movie manages to include short adventures (side-quests) that bring more details on Ash's personality and philosophy. This allows us to get through varied emotions all along. I found the bad guy of the movie was shallow and overly stereotyped.

Attacks of the Pokémons match with those in the games excepted in the end where they all are blasting colourful lasers coming out of nowhere. There are however some major disproportions as we see Pikachu winning against a Snorlax who was about to crush him. The fact that we see evolutions is great and underlines the idea of constant progression.

Considering the idea of seeing Ash in a normal world and going to school as a regular kid is really interesting and adds to the magic of the Pokémon universe. Multiple times the movie oscillate between pure rational logic (if Ash don't wake up at the right time he doesn't get to choose the Pokémon he wants) and 'fairy tail' logic (your Pokémon can get completely beaten up but still will never die). It is difficult to situate oneself in relation to these constant changes.

Characters are all well-designed and show some deep personalities. Only Jessie, James and Meowth are the same as always and appear to be quite useless excepted for being blasted off again and again all along the movie. Making Pikachu talk to Ash is really weird and breaks the magic. There were other opportunities to make him communicate with Ash without talking. This is aberrant. But not as much as the end. I can't stand kids movies making their heroes die and then resurrect. After all the violence this movie contains you can't invoke magic to resurrect people. Life does not go that way. How are children supposed to learn about grief? I wasn't expecting a moral lesson from this movie but still got disappointed on that fact.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the story ends with sadness, which almost made me go in tears seeing that the main character is literally dead, and the pikachu even spoke, with a few words, expressing so much of how much they want to be with the main character,

the storyline is great too, with the intentions of reminding old pokemon fans (not me, just heard about it.) about the Ho-Oh, and then the story just ending with trying to store with peace, or something close to that.

amazing conflict, solution, and plot. i would likely watch this again.
