Dakota Johnson is fine, but the overall film is boring and derivative. The 'Fleabag' treatment didn't suit it very well.

One way or another, purists will disown anything, and in the case of Jane Austen, don't even mention it.

Persuasion tries. I don't hold that against it, but it's as tame and predictable as you'd expect from films that usually engage in this kind of adaptations. You could put it side by side with any other similar film and you wouldn't really find any difference worth mentioning.

Ironically this script tries to make its main character far more incisive than you would expect from a woman of the period and yet that same character is completely tied to the conventions of that era.

It's like saying: ''Yes she has a broad personality, but even so, she must still play by the rules.''
Either you're encouraged to break them or you don't. Persuasion fails to do that.

Dakota Johnson deserves the credit for her performance, but that's basically it.

Enjoyed this more than I thought, found the performances and characterizations full and well portrayed.

Like most Jane Austen adaptations, the plot is obvious, so it's up to the filmmakers to do something to make a new version stand out. This one doesn't. Dakota Johnson stars as the typical Austen heroine: smart, outspoken and holding out for true love. When the man she spurned 8 years earlier (Cosmo Jarvis) returns, they play a 2-hour cat-and-mouse game with their affections. It's basically Johnson's movie. She's in almost every scene and constantly comments to the camera (that tired trope). Her performance is sufficient. There are a few supporting characters to add some slight humor. Often, these period pieces feature gorgeous sets and costumes, while this version goes for a more "realistic" subdued look. In keeping with modern trends, the cast is multi-ethnic. Austen fans may enjoy, but there's not much "persuasive" about the film's merits to make it memorable. Expand

I was left to wonder: Wasn't it just a rom-com a second ago? Persuasion entrusts too much of itself to providence, which means—as said by Anne—it hasn't made up its mind yet. Expand

Right after seeing a cut of Persuasion made by Netflix, I was aroused by his dialogues with the camera. I went to watch with hope. It will be a masterpiece or simply a disaster. Let's go to the review!

Writing that looked like it came out of a romantic theater play, or rather, from Jane Austen's books...At least that's what they said in the movie.

Am I the only one who noticed that the second act ended up at the end of the movie? The beginning felt like the end, and the end the beginning. The plot would unfold in a deeply exciting way if it weren't for the poor adaptation of the script and organization of the facts. Slow paced, boring and uncreative.

Dakota Johnson carried the few considerations to be made for the film on her back. Brilliant in his performance. She did excellent dialogue with the camera. But unfortunately it was very poorly used with this confusing direction and highly predictable script. Expected more from Cosmo Jarvis' performance, it didn't live up to the height.

Simple photography, no surprises.

For her cultured speeches and her erudite characters, I think the author deserves much more. So I conclude that the book must be really amazing. But with this adaptation they couldn't get very far. It was worth the try, but it was a huge waste of cast and story. A drama without drama. By the way, who is Carrie Cracknell? Rating 5, great for falling asleep.
