Where do I even begin? Persuasion is my second favourite Jane Austen novel, and one of my favourite novels of all time. Whoever made this film has clearly not read it. Acting? Terrible. Script? It's the most horrendous Jane Austen adaptation of all time, topping the 2020 film of Emma, the 2008 series of Emma and the 1983 series of Mansfield Park. Laughably bad. And the octopus scene? I joined metacritic so I could rate this movie. It is the worst adaptation of Jane Austen I have ever seen. I wish I could unsee it. I am not a purest, I love Clueless, but no one involved here seems to understand the story.

Despite great performances from cast, this adaptation is junk. American adaptations treat Austen works as light romantic comedies, and this one is almost as egregious at it as the awful 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. But she wrote social satire, not YA romance. It's possible to adapt older works for modern audiences without losing the sensibilities of the original. For example, no Austen heroine would ever swim out into deep water contemplating suicide as they have Anne do here. If you want to see Austen done right, check out the 1995 version of Persuasion. It's much better and actually feels like a Jane Austen story. Also, modern pop music has no place in an Austen adaptation. That was the rotten cherry on top of this pile of garbage.… Expand

Ridiculous garbage. Jane Austen weeps in her grave. There's nothing remotely Regency about this except the sets and some of the costumes.
