It's just too long, so it makes the whole experience dull and inefficient from a narrative standpoint. Actors are great, but visually I preferred The Dark Knight.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. These reviews must be paid for. While the movie did have great acting, it certainly did not make up for the fact that it was incredibly tedious and boring.

I love quantum physics and was expecting an interesting delve into the science behind the creation of nuclear weapons, instead we received an extremely long, drawn out political biopic. Other than Cilian Murphy's fantastic job of portraying Oppenheimer, none of the characters were interesting in the slightest. I had no emotional investment whatsoever.

After the build up to the trinity event, the payoff was abysmal. The one single shot of a nuclear explosion didn't look anything like an actual nuclear explosion, and they completely glossed over the events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The last 45 minutes of the movie could best be described as torture.

I really wondered how they were going to make a 3 hour film on Oppenheimer interesting, turns out: they didn't. Probably the most tedious movie I've ever had to sit through.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh, where do I even begin with this disaster of a movie? "Oppenheimer," directed by Christopher Nolan, is an absolute train wreck that left me questioning why I wasted my time and money on this incomprehensible mess.

First and foremost, the pacing of the film is abysmal. It drags on and on, making a snail's pace look like a Formula 1 race. The excruciatingly slow storytelling is accompanied by a convoluted and disjointed plot that jumps all over the place without any semblance of coherence. I felt like I was watching a collection of random scenes clumsily stitched together rather than a well-crafted narrative.

Let's talk about the characters. They are as lifeless as a pile of rocks. There is absolutely no depth or development to any of them. Despite having talented actors on board, the script fails to give them anything meaningful to work with. It's as if Nolan expected the audience to be mind readers and understand the characters' motivations and emotions without any proper exploration.

And don't even get me started on the dialogue. It's filled with pretentious, pseudo-intellectual jargon that seems to be Nolan's attempt at profundity but ends up being laughably cringe-worthy. I half expected the characters to break into soliloquies about the meaning of life while staring at the sky in slow-motion.

The film's visual effects are perhaps the only saving grace, but even they can't make up for the sheer boredom induced by the rest of the movie. It's almost like Nolan was so focused on creating visually stunning scenes that he forgot to care about telling a compelling story.

Furthermore, the historical inaccuracies in "Oppenheimer" are unforgivable. Nolan takes significant liberties with the events surrounding the development of the atomic bomb and the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Instead of honoring the real-life complexities and nuances of the subject matter, the movie twists facts to fit its own narrative, which only serves to further insult the intelligence of the audience.

In conclusion, "Oppenheimer" is an overindulgent, self-important mess that fails to deliver on any level. It's a baffling combination of boring storytelling, lifeless characters, and historical revisionism. Save yourself the agony and steer clear of this cinematic disaster. Christopher Nolan should seriously consider taking a break and reevaluating his approach to filmmaking after this debacle.

The script is awful and overall plot confused and has no real direction, message or deliverance. I caught myself looking at the clock several times, you could easily cut 2/3 of this movie and probably make a few adjustments to get a better movie across. I am quite confused what this movie, that is Nolan, is trying to tell us? To try and make us feel sorry for the person who created the atomic bomb? I’m no Greenpeace snowflake, but that’s like trying to create sympathy for the devil. It’s impossible and why even try? Didn’t think that Nolan had to retort to buying up-votes on IMDB/Metacritic, certainly not for his
Previous work, but this is extremely overrated.

I'd say that it is 10% about the making of the bomb and 90% about a political witch hunt/ administrative process dealing with his security clearance decades later. Who cares if an elderly man keeps his security clearance? He developed the bomb that killed hundreds of thousands of people and perhaps ended WWII. By focusing so much on his security clearance and what that might do for his finances and the tail end of his career, it severely minimizes the important part- the bomb. And the hearing dragged on and on and on. The rest of the movie was a combination of snappy CSI style clever dialogue chess and quick cuts with an overbearing soundtrack. It felt like a never ending montage. I have a physics major and I knew the general story as I'm a history buff. I should have been the target audience for this. I've give it a 3/10. Expand

The first 2 acts reminded me of 'The Imitation Game', which I enjoyed more, and for the life of me, I can not understand how there are that many people out there who enjoyed the final act of this movie, and are willing to rate it "10/10, best movie ever, top film of this decade".

If I was streaming it at home, I would have turned it off.. instead, I was sat in a packed cinema for 3 hours, waiting for the credits to role so I can go home.

It was clearly produced with a bent political agenda, because it almost seemed like two movies loosely strung together; the first about Oppenheimer coordinating scientists to build the bomb, and the second about how he was a marter for doing so. It was hard to follow with all of the needlessly back-and-forth cut scenes to Oppenheimer's past and then to his future, and so forth. And did we really need all of the drama with him and his wives?! It's as if they were trying to do quantum mathematics instead of simple addition that easily told a concise story. Too many loose ends. The middle portion of the movie was strong, but overall too much repetition of material and too much jumping around. Matt Damon was the worst actor in the movie. There's something that still amazes me about the minimalism that fills all aspects of his productions, like how the sets are never bloated, how the characters are understated, from set design, to makeup and wardrobe.

So many directors want you to know it's 1945 or 1980 so damn hard, in all shots. Nolan doesn't do that, and in turn, you forget it and start living in the moment, which is whatever he says it is.

My problem with Oppenheimer was that it was the first Nolan film that had taken the interesting narrative elements from his other films in a really obvious way. Like the parallel black and white scenes like in Momento. Actors who were like chariciture's of real people, like in his Batman films, and it actually took away the authenticity of the story itself. It seemed like it was almost done to reign the film in and make it more approachable, but in return, took something away.

It just didn't seem grounded as all his other films were... in that sense.

The acting was just phenomenal, Emily Blunt, what an amazing role, everything that came out of her mouth was convincing. Overall, couldn't fault it and even with the actors that only had little roles. They all were authentic.

Except for Florence Pugh, out of all the characters, her's didn't feel relatable, and if anything, not real at all. Like Cobb's wife Mal, in Inception.

Oppenheimer is a masterpiece of cinema that explores the life and work of one of the most influential and controversial scientists of the 20th century. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is a gripping and nuanced portrait of J. RobertOppenheimer is a masterpiece of cinema that explores the life and work of one of the most influential and controversial scientists of the 20th century. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is a gripping and nuanced portrait of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, and his role in the Manhattan Project, the secret program that developed the first nuclear weapons during World War II.

The film boasts an impressive cast of actors, led by Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer, who delivers a captivating performance as the brilliant and tormented physicist. Murphy portrays Oppenheimer’s genius, ambition, moral dilemmas, and personal struggles with remarkable depth and subtlety. Emily Blunt is equally compelling as his wife Katherine, who supports him through his professional and emotional challenges. The film also features Matt Damon as Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, the military leader of the project, Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, a political adversary of Oppenheimer, and Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr, a mentor and friend of Oppenheimer.

The film is not only a biographical drama, but also a historical thriller that recreates the tense and dramatic events that led to the creation and use of the atomic bomb. The film shows the scientific breakthroughs, the ethical debates, the political intrigues, and the human consequences of the project with stunning realism and accuracy. The film also uses innovative cinematography and visual effects to depict the nuclear tests and explosions in breathtaking detail.

Oppenheimer is a film that will leave you speechless and moved by its powerful story and its profound implications. It is a film that honors the legacy of Oppenheimer and his colleagues, but also questions their responsibility and accountability for unleashing a new era of warfare and destruction. It is a film that challenges you to think about the moral and ethical issues of science and technology, and their impact on humanity and history. It is a film that you should not miss.

Cut to within an inch of its life and scrambled out of sequence. It frustrated me by the end but it’s also the movie that convinced me that Nolan is capable of mastery and not just spectacle. The cinematography, script, acting, music: all stunning.

I’ve loved Nolan’s films with huge reservations for years. His major vice, in my opinion, is that he’s deeply insecure about his stories being interesting or intelligent enough on their own merits. So he chops them up into confusing chronologies and buries the dialogue behind a wall of sound design and music so that you’re figuratively leaning forward in your seat just trying to comprehend the most basic elements of the story and script. It feels like you’re interested but really you’re just confused. It’s kind of a sleight of hand on the part of the director.

After being irked by these tendencies in Inception and Interstellar and fully annoyed by them in Dunkirk, Tenet was the culmination of all of Nolan’s worst tendencies and I basically gave up on taking him seriously after that.

I’m happy to say that Oppenheimer rights many of these wrongs. There is no punishing Wagnerian score from Hanz Zimmer. Instead it’s thoughtfully and often minimally scored with whole chunks of blessed quiet. Finally! I understood 90 percent of the dialogue in this movie, even though it was often happening too fast to process. Unfortunately it’s yet another Nolan film told in a spaghetti of chronology. This was so unnecessary. This story, played by this cast, with that dialogue would have been riveting in basic chronological order. It’s also just way too long. As good as RDJ is in the part, his storyline hijacks the film and turns it into some showdown between an embittered man and a scientist, instead of what the film starts out as: a meditation on a complicated genius whose paradoxes may be hypocrisies. Had the film been shorter and with more space in it, you could have had more time to luxuriate in the ambiguity. I’m glad I saw it on a big screen. It was really beautiful. I loved all the abstract micro photography they cut in. Since Nolan has asked us to consider Oppenheimer’s hypocrisies and short sightedness (“How can someone who sees so much be so blind?”), I’m going to call him out on a bit of what I see as b.s. Nolan has come out as the patron saint for seeing films in theaters on the big, silver screen. This is now part of his brand. My hot take is that Nolan makes films that can’t be experienced or even understood properly in a single viewing. He makes films that are designed to be rewatched multiple times at home before they are comprehendible. He makes movies for the DVD, director's commentary generation. Movies that sometimes need reddit and reviews and comments sections to translate. As opposed to films which offer a complete experience in a single sitting. I think he is working at odds with his stated goals. I hope Nolan makes a movie this good where he gives up on needless complexity and recognizes the power of quiet and space. And that he finally makes another film like Memento or The Prestige which offers a complete experience on first viewing.

The way he balanced his characters is simply stunning. All the main actors are at their top level of acting and combining that with the directorial capabilities of Nolan, turn in to one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time. Also this is one of those movie which make's me watch it over and over again. After seeing this one I want to become a physicist, especially me who have a particular interest in cosmology, seeing all the scientific details , like images and flashes of the particle-wave duality of light, kept me tight in to my seat. Also there is one scene , the scene of the speech , just after the bombings of those Japanese cities. That scene is one of the most intense, frightening and chilling theatrical scene ever in history, brilliantly executed by Nolan, and magically performed pe Cillian. One for the Oscars for Nolan. And that "I believe we did" ending, keeps my up at night. I just can't find the words, and if I can, I'll write much more about the movie, but bottom down : Best Movie I've seen. Expand

From its opening frame to its captivating conclusion, the film is a 180-minute masterpiece that grips you, leaving you on the edge of your seat. Such is its brilliance and immersive storytelling, I hardly noticed the passage of time. Few films possess the allure to draw one back to the cinema for a rewatch, but Oppenheimer is undeniably one of them.

Ludwig Göransson's soundtrack deserves a standing ovation on its own. The auditory journey he crafts is mind-blowing. Each track is meticulously tailored to its corresponding scene, resonating with the film's varying emotions and pacing. The music flows with such elegance and coherence that it feels like a singular, 3-hour-long symphony, seamlessly underscoring the narrative.

In a world saturated with films vying for attention, Oppenheimer stands as a testament to what cinema can achieve. It's not just a movie; it's an experience—one that lingers long after the credits roll.

Strap yourselves in, because this ride is 3 hours long and has no action scenes like you might be used to from Nolan films. That being said, Nolan does it again!

This movie is a visual, audio, and acting masterpiece, and lives up to any hope that a true Nolan fan has. More so, it gives the audience a deep dive into the morality of the atomic bomb. Was the atomic bomb a terrible idea, or did it save the world from any future wars? This film aims to answer that.

Oppenheimer never loses or disengages you throughout its pulverizing 3 hours. It never ceases to give you something you want to see more of. Nolan is playing the game at his highest level. Sometimes the pacing does work against, but never to the films detriment or effect. The captivation never makes you doubt. It's done so well, and captured with such virtuosity. And leaves you with a sense of haunting bewilderment as Nolan teases the idea of what could destroy the world. Maybe his most provocative film yet, maybe his best, but certainly the kind of movie I've waited to see from him for a long time. I would've been okay for the pacing to be stretched out in a 4 hour movie. The quality, performances and filmmaking make it worth it. But the 3hr bombshell I'll accept. Expand

Not the "Manhattan Project", not the "Atomic Bomb", not "The Bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki", just Oppenheimer. It's about the life of a theorical physician who became the most important man in the world and his downfall in his point of view. If you were going into this movie expecting just to be about the creation of the atomic bomb or see the destruction of Japan, then you're setting yourself up to be disappointed.

Although the creation of the bomb maybe the standing climax of this film, there are other purposes that has an important role: Oppenheimer's communist views, the Manhattan Project, security clearance hearing. We also get to see Lewis Strauss point of view of Oppenheimer and the trail as well. This movie is a biopic character study movie work so well in every way. The acting was phenomenal from all cast members, including Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. The pacing and editing were great, the music score was gripping, suspenseful, and well done. The sound has always been Nolan's criticism since The Dark Knight Rises, but it much better here in this movie despite being loud in IMAX.

The movie is treated like a documentary and its bit non-linear which I think some people would find boring considering it's a 3-hour movie of just people talking. I'll say knowing Nolan's style of filmmaking and it's a historical movie, it raises my expectations knowing where it was going. It's even better watching it on second viewing to look back what you miss during the first screening. I think this movie would've been received better for everybody if they didn't have issues with their attention span. Not all movies are meant to be entertaining but find some core of interested of something new we all been craving for. In the world where most summer blockbusters are CGI-fest, action packed, corny writing, this was actually refreshing.

If you like watching movies where serious looking men wearing suits and hats discuss super important problems in offices behind closed doors and the sun shines through the half closed blinds, this is the movie for you.

While technically very good, I found the movie a little boring. The bomb related scenes were interesting, but all the political stuff (like 90% of the movie) felt very dry and stretched out.

If you like movies like JFK full of intrigues and accusations, you will probably like this movie.

If Cillian Murphy is denied an Oscar for his haunting portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer, it shall be one of the great injustices in cinema history. The supporting cast was brilliant, especially Emily Blunt. I lost count of the ensemble cast of brilliant actors lining up for a few moments of silver screen time in this 3-hour journey that seemed to flash by. Imax certainly does justice to the vision of Nolan, from overwhelming visuals of the sub-atomic world and the expanded universe to the floor-shaking sound effects. The fast-cut scenes have an emotional impact when layered on unforgiving sounds. Oppie is a flawed and haunted man, a notion made quite evident from the beginning frames of the movie. He brings the wide-eyed wonder of a child as he journeys around the world in the quest for knowledge, meeting giants of physics upon whose shoulders our modern life rests. In a sense, he goes through a complete anti-hero’s journey from naivete, to triumphal power and finally down to defeat, disillusionment and despair. All throughout, we see his constant rationalization and justification of his inevitable march towards becoming the destroyer of worlds. One is torn between sympathy and hatred for this deeply complex genius. There are so many cautionary tales in this movie, about moments in history when one could swerve in a noble direction instead of taking humanity to the brink of self-destruction. There are other lessons about the politics and machinations of power and the urgency of avoiding enemies through humiliation. The warnings of Einstein delivered throughout the movie hammer home repeatedly. They say the age of discoveries is past us, and that there is nothing new to unlock anymore. Oppie and his companions were the last great explorers of the universe. What they unlocked remains the final frontier of science, everything that follows rests on their shoulders. Expand

And yet it is also a filmOppenheimer is a film that evokes mixed feelings in me. What is shown on screen is a convergence of enormous work in research, character studies, cinematic thinking of shots, great sound design and masterful acting. And yet it is also a film that you cannot easily recommend. Without research or prior knowledge, it is difficult to follow through rapid succession of conversations between many characters exploring the deeper layers of physics. In my opinion, Nolan also tried to build in a certain sense of tension through the excessive use of music in almost every conversation. It was a bit too much.

The film feels like it is working towards the climax in the form of the trinity test. However, this is just the start of a whole new political twist in the story that feels like a movie itself. As a result, for me personally it felt like I was watching an entire season of a series in one sitting. The whole thing felt like a long mush of information and content towards the end of the movie.

And yet, the message of the film. It's a painful reality that will never go away. Something that is food for thought long after you leave the cinema.

PS Come on Nolan…So much research for a movie but the so called Dutch language was painful to watch. As a Dutchman I could not understand one word.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oppenheimer" was excellent. All of his strengths & weaknesses are presented in roughly chronological order, with flashbacks when perspective is needed.
He had a disconnect between himself & his ego. His attempt to poison his college professor puts this on display. This was to carry over with his involvement in inventing the atomic bomb; he went from a frat boy boasting of his achievement to something that ended up around his neck.

He was a womanizer, too. Driving his first wife to suicide after having an affair with his second. But you best believe Hollywood played up this angle as graphically as possible. Then there's the product placement; J & B scotch. But none of this harmed the movie too much. Robert Downy jr. plays up the villain real well as Senator Strauss. His speech about securing power was chilling. Matt Damon's turn as general Grove as simultaneously encouraging & prodding shows his skills as an actor. Cillian Murphy was great as J. Robert. Simultaneously brilliant & naive.
The ending was surprisingly upbeat. I'm posting a full review on Megacritic ⚡⚡⚡

Nolan manages to make each conversation feel like an action sequence, paired perfectly alongside Goransson's pounding score. the film may be 3 hours but it moves at 100 miles an hour. Cillian Murphy and RDJ both produce career defining performances and are shoe ins for Oscar nominations at the very least. However, the performance I found the most powerful was Emily Blunt's, she didn't have the screen time of Cillian or RDJ but used each second just as well and may have the most memorable and powerful scene of the entire film. An absolutely captivating and thrilling experience, and potentially Nolan's career best. Expand

Cillian Murphy knows how to carry the film very well. Another highlight of this production is its photography, Van Hoytema does a great job. Something that disadvantaged the film is its duration, I think that people who don't like three-hours movies are not going to like how Oppenheimer develops. Apart from Nolan's great direction, something in which this production stands out is its cast, they are all splendid. Emily Blunt gives a performance worthy of an Oscar nomination. Expand

You will feel the 3-hour runtime and it is very much a period drama movie so don't expect much action or thrills from the movie. This is Nolan making a history class movie in his filmmaking style and it is a pleasure to see!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For starters, this movie is an incredible mix of real life and fiction. The way this movie is real life events and fiction all in the same bag is awesome. The bomb scene. The panic atacks the main character has it's just incredible. The whole movie is incredible. Expand

The first part has a few dull moments (witness the forced sound effects in an attempt to set the pace). The division into three timelines adds confusion, at the risk of losing us. On the whole, it remains interesting.

It's in the second half that the film takes off, offering us what Christopher Nolan does best: twists and turns, an unparalleled sense of narrative, and above all plenty to ponder both the events and its psychological and philosophical implications. This is how we forgive the length of the first part and bow to this breathless, morally pressing biography of Oppenheimer.

That truly showcasesThe trinity test is one of the greatest moment and will be remembered in cinema history. Everyone was so captivated that there was pin drop silence in a fullhouse theatre no munching popcorn, no squeaky chairs nothing. That truly showcases the beauty of the movie. It's might sound generic but literally all aspects were great and work together so well collectively to tell the story beautifully the visuals, the music, the cinematography... Best biography I've seen hands downs, being historically accurate while also being so much fun and captivating is truly the beauty of Nolan's direction. I'm not being a fanboy but Nolan deserves all the credit here, most of the story is about a single person and he's the person of focus most of the time yet Nolan manages to keep everyone hooked for every single moment of the 3hours. Even after the movie ended I just sat there till after the end of credits and not because the movie felt incomplete but rather because it's truly complete and you're just sitting there thinking through it knowing what a great time you had and acknowledging that's it the movie has ended.

I feel the critique mostly comes from people who lack some basic understanding of the history of The Trinity project , the war and some basic concepts of the bomb.

Would highly recommend to watch veritasium's yt video about oppenheimer which helps a lot.

However, that dialogue is some of the most impactful dialogue in a major release in years. There's not much action, or focus on the bomb itself, but that's only to the benefit of the movie; it doesn't need any of those fancy effects, because the real impact comes from the psychological torment of the very idea of being literally "death, the destroyer of worlds." If you have an average attention span, watch this movie immediately (before it stops playing in theaters). Ending was the best ending to a film I've ever seen. 10/10 easy. Expand
