Another movie from Jordan Peele, we all know how outstanding Get Out and Us were, so it is obvious that a lot of people put high expectations to Nope. To me, does it live up to my expectation? Kinda
Good: The acting is great, characters have their own backstories and thoughts. The idea is unique and reckless. I mean, a movie about the UFO in 2022? That sounds boring as hell, but Jordan somehow still make the movie interesting and stimulate my curiousity through out the whole film. Cons (from my perspective): + So to me, I myself believe that it is better that the movie "hide" the outlook of the monster, like BirdBox did. I cant stand the "jelly-looking" outlook of the monster in the movie, i mean its pretty weird. + Antlers looks like a cool dude talking mysteriously all the time, but then he just died in a pretty stupid way, which I believe everyone would claim thats a "sacrifice for the world, for arts,.." .
+ Dont get me wrong, the monkey part and floating shoe is also extremely interesting but it doesnt really fit the movie that well, its rather a "supernatural thing" than a "outer space thing".
So 7.3/10 to me

The film looks great and I love the way it builds suspense. I still think it isn't great however since it is just too slow in the first act. I think the best part is the middle section where there are some riveting sequences. The acting is fantastic, Keke Palmer in particular. It is such an ambitious film I think many people might just find it boring. The ending I thought was a little silly but the sequence was suspenseful and beautifully shot. I think there are many discussions that can be had about the film. Expand

Jordan Peele is a true talent, but this movie comes up empty in places in narrative and especially the climax. Original effort, Spielberg-like Sci-Fi/Adventure scale and Shamalan-like horror ambition. Doesn't completely miss the mark but doesn't fully deliver either.

There are multiple storylines they are opened up but not fully explored and even a quote from the Bible at the beginning, it just felt pretentious at times. It's a shame Peele can't seem to focus on telling a coherent story. However the cast and direction failed to excite beyond the average needle mark with the ultimately mediocre screenplay and poor pacing issues. Expand

Some old school Spielberg and Shyamalan vibes to it but while the first part is intriguing, the second half and the ending are disappointing. The characters are unlikable, and don't seem to be afraid or even fazed from what is happening, they are actually do what they do for their own personal gain. This, together with the unserious tone of the movie takes away the "horror" edge, and leaves it as a mere comedy/thriller. There are some fillers as well (don't want to spoil), as I assume they are related to the message that was supposed to be delivered...at least I think so.

I guess it could be an ok movie to watch when it comes to whichever streaming service.

It’s not an easy movie to describe, but it’s not a horror movie. It has horror elements not unlike most of M. Night’s work and who’s movies this reminded me of. I think the acting over all is not as good as his last two films and something felt really off with the pacing and lack of character development. The characters are fairly static in how they behave throughout the movie. I think the casting was great, but the polar opposite attitudes of the two leads didn’t fit the tone of the movie for me. The very few other characters that populate this movie left me with way to many questions and it was obvious they where mostly devices there to drive that plot/story forward. I didn’t like how parts of the story are introduced. Not everything was clear on my first viewing of this and I think it might make a bit more sense the next time around. There’s very little gore, but what’s there is haunting. With all of that said fans of Peele’s other movies should absolutely check this out. In many aspects it might be my favorite movie of his so far. Expand

This is because "Nope" is his second movie in a row that starts out intriguing but just falls apart at the end.

For the first two-thirds of the film, "Nope" maintains an aura of suspense that makes you wonder where Peele is going with this. The setup is strong, and the imagery riveting. There's a hint of something high-concept that Peele wants to get at, which is partly due to the expectations after "Get Out" but also partly due to the way he delivers information. But then it just...sort of...devolves into a regular-ass horror movie. It's not a terrible movie, but it's not what it wants to be or could have been.

What's even more confounding is that he includes flashback sequences to a horrific event that seems to foreshadow what's going on in the present. By the end of the film, however, I can only speculate on why those sequences were included other than to ratchet up the sense of dread and add length to the film.

If he had followed any one of the high-concept themes (animals rebelling, the modern phenomenon everyone watching everyone else, etc.) the movie seems to be getting at in different points of the movie, this could have been a really thought-provoking film. In the end, however, Peele is just throwing ideas at the camera while not really making them cohere.

Some of the characters have moments, for no reason, that have them behave in a way no one does...ever.
The Premise is interesting, but ultimately just ran around in circles. Well photographed.
Did I dislike it? Nope.
Was it one of the best and most revolutionary or thought provoking films ever made?
Nope.

It was O.K. for something new to watch.
Reading critic reviews is basically pointless these days; some even ranked this film 100! Hahaha!

Yes, the element of fear is almost absent. But the movie is watched with interest. I can't say I was bored for 2 hours. But I can say that it ended with a very funny finale. At first, I thought that the monkey at the beginning of the movie was killing people as aliens brutalizing animals, but it turned out it had nothing to do with it. But really the most impressive scene was the monkey scene. And when I thought the red balloon was a human head, I thought it was more scary. It was nice to have the cloud still. I wish they hadn't opened that flying creature like a torn curtain. The movie can be enjoyed with the family.

There are no nudity or sexually explicit scenes in the movie.

While Jordan Peele showcases once again that he is a master of building tension, his latest offering is ultimately undone by pacing issues and undercooked subplots that fail to provide any payoff.

As a side note:

The critics were never going to be unkind to a Peele film out of fear risking the wrath of the internet. This is immediately apparent in the contrast between the critic and user scores. Was Peele's latest offering better than this year's legacy sequel Scream 5? Nope. I think critics need to devise and implement a universal scoring rubric as a guideline to ensure that films aren't punished in areas of excellence based purely on a biased view towards an existing IP or favouring certain directors or studios over others.

Presentation For a horror film, Nope succeeds spectacularly and fails miserably in the field of spooks and horror. It succeeds spectacularly, due to the fact that for the first half of the movie there is absolutely nothing that is known about the foe, the horror. It also manages to succeed because there’s a surprisingly lacking number of the fabled ‘jump-scare’. Nope does something very interesting. It only utilizes the standard jump-scare once, and the utilization is absolutely dreadful (totally pointless) as it comes shortly after a phenomenally good scene that truly brings fright to the viewer. Then there was a message that was supposedly intended to be conveyed by the director - that much is obvious. I, however, find the manner of conveyance to have been lacking. The bible citation at the beginning was indicative of what the message was, but then the white text (initially horse names, then monster name) on a black background separating ‘acts’ was very weird. Sure, one could assume that the names in question are representative of the prey that will wind up being hunted in that ‘act’, but this is so pointless that, as a transition, something else could have been used. Overall, the presentation of ‘Nope’ was not bad, but it was not good, either. I really feel as though I’m compelled to give it a lower rating, but I’ll settle for a decent, rather than a barely passable. 2/3

Acting I think this movie did that quite well. The performance given by Daniel Kaluuya was very good - I found the presentation of a socially awkward, or at least shy, person winding up in the situations he wound up in to be very compelling, and then the visual play done by his face in the close-ups that the audience got was also not bad at all. There was a measure of calmness, or rather of collectedness, to this character, which was mainly granted by the performance. He was scared and terrified, but he did not show it through the conventional means. In fact, there was very little screaming on the part of the named characters here. Another interesting performance was provided by Keke Palmer - also quite a good one. The chemistry I perceived between Keke and Daniel, who portrayed sister and brother, was very believable. They were almost a perfect depiction of siblings, who are slightly estranged, who have their own lives and interests, but are still siblings who love one another. Lastly, something that tickled my fancy - Michael Wincott’s voice had me very pleased. The character he portrayed was also very interesting, from a visual perspective - how he moved, how he reacted to things. His voice, however, was the most compelling thing. I think all the actors did a really good job here. 3/3

Story We come to this at last... ...An interesting story that gets ruined by itself in the middle. I’m really upset by it. 1/3

Legendary Point Does this film get the legendary point, so craved and wanted by all and none at the same time? Well, I wanted to say yes, for a while. Then I realized I don’t actually want to say yes, I was just being pretentious in my craving to award some kind of recognition to the actors who took part in this film’s creation, but NO, Nope does not get the Legendary Point. I feel as though it could have been… Well, better. 0/1

Conclusion

6/10. It’s actually not a bad movie, but it is definitely not one I would want to rewatch. I’d recommend it to… Well, who would I recommend it to? It’s almost a good recommendation for fans of horror, but it shoots itself in the leg, so I wouldn’t want to recommend it. I can’t recommend it to anyone who likes science fiction, because this was more along the lines of fantasy that science-y… Maybe to fans of Jordan Peele movies? Or maybe as something to be put on as noise on the TV whilst doing other things. I tuck it under my belt, though it is frightfully close to the bag of mediocrity. It does have some dust on it, and it’s very rough and imperfect, but it’s got… It's got charm.

Acting is pretty good, and humor is okay (very much caters go Gen Z "swear to show you care" mentality. And as a Gen Z myself, I hate it), and the alien design is EASILY the best part of the movie due to how otherworldly it feels, but I just can't get over what a lukewarm ending that was. Still, it’s an inventive and engrossing addition to the genre." Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer star as brother and sister who are the last family members of a long line of horse trainers for TV and movies. When mysterious things start happening on their ranch, they dig deeper (or look higher) to figure out the cause. While this starts with promise, it's almost an hour until any cool encounters and even then, the lapses in reality and reason kept causing question marks. Director Peele hasn't delivered much suspense…more anticipation that never delivers. The climax features some cool visuals, but there's more unsettling atmosphere than real tension in the action. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first half really had me, but then the reveal of the alien as being nothing more than hungry, and really quite stupid, was a major let down. Add to that, the characters were thinly drawn and when you don't care about them that much, the stakes don't seem that high for their lives. It was also supposed to be a comedy of sorts, but I certainly wasn't laughing. I get that it also had some social commentary, but it really wasn't that interesting. How the alien looked towards the end was pretty amazing though, and the initial suspense at the start of the film, like I said, I was into it. Shame the rest of it was such a let down. Expand

After brilliant career starts with “Get Out” (2017) and “Us” (2019), this rising star in the world of filmmaking has lost his way with this one. While I didn’t exactly hate the picture, it underachieves what this director is capable of. Its fairly simple premise is far too stretched out, padded with material that’s somewhat predictable and adds little to the development of the overall narrative. What’s more, the film lacks much of the humor and signature fright moments that characterized the filmmaker’s previous two works, coming across as flatter than those pictures. Add to that some plot devices that don’t make sense, a big reveal that comes far too early on in the film, a sleepwalking performance by lead Daniel Kaluuya, a failure of the director to “kill its darlings” and a lack of any appreciably new insights into the phenomenon of ufology, and you’ve got a mix that, sadly, just doesn’t cut it compared to Peele’s caliber. Personally, I’d recommend that prospective viewers wait until this one comes out on cable or streaming services; there’s no need to plunk down full theatrical prices for this disappointing offering. From a filmmaking perspective, the "craft" of this film is great. It has fantastic cinematography, great sound, great visuals and effects, solid pacing, great bread-crumb sprinkles that eventually come to fruition full-circle by the end of the film, etc. The "nuts and bolts" of the film are great.

Unfortunately, I think just the actual "core" bread-and-butter of the film, from a substance and content and story perspective, just isn't really great. Thankfully (for me), it wasn't even remotely scary as a suspense/thriller/"horror" movie, either. (I should add that while I don't love proper horror films, I absolutely love suspense and thrillers.)

Interestingly, I do think the allegories and "messaging" angle of the film are solid. This can be seen through various flashback scenes, and ideas surrounding humanity's relationship to nature, etc. There are also some little nuggets for folks who've been following the recent "UAP" conversations in news and politics, as well (leaked Navy pilot videos published by the New York Times, discovery of a secret Pentagon program studying UFOs, different rival theories about their possible explanation and origin, etc.)

I really wanted to love the movie, but unfortunately it was just "okay." Fantastic in the nuts-and-bolts, but pretty "meh" as far as the substance. Really loved the characters, though.

Jordan Peele is clearly a gifted filmmaker. It’s also possible that he’s too smart for his own good. His latest offering, “Nope,” decisively answers the rhetorical question: “Are all of Jordan Peele’s films interesting and accessible?”

A taciturn OJ Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) works for his dad at Haywood’s Hollywood Horses, which wrangles horses for the entertainment industry. After his father is mysteriously killed by falling metal debris, OJ becomes responsible for keeping the business and the family ranch afloat. His sister, Emerald (Keke Palmer), helps out, sorta. But there’s something very wrong here. A cloud has been sitting on the horizon for days. Could it be hiding a space alien from view? Yup. But good news: by capturing film footage of the alien, maybe the Haywards can make a lot of money and save the farm.

In writing this screenplay, Writer/Producer/Director Peele creates more story lines than he knows what to do with. The film opens with a quote from the Old Testament prophet Nahum: “I will cast abominable filth upon you, make you vile, and make you a spectacle.” So perhaps this film is an allegory about the oversized role of spectacle in modern culture? Sorta. Peele tells us a couple of times that OJ and Emerald are the descendants of the black jockey who appeared in 1878’s “The Horse in Motion,” arguably the progenitor of the modern motion picture. And there’s a poster for “Buck and the Preacher,” Sidney Poitier’s directorial debut, that appears in more than one scene. Maybe this film is about the marginalization of black contributions to film-making? Kinda. There’s a storyline about Jupe (Steven Yeun), who’s scratching to make a living managing a misbegotten cowboy theme park. As a child, Jupe starred in “Gordy’s Home,” an infamously short-lived sitcom where a chimpanzee ran amuck and attacked almost everyone on the set. Huh?

Peele fully develops exactly none of these ideas or any of the other thematic elements floating around. As a result, “Nope” comes across as a series of poorly developed impressions culminating in an unsatisfyingly ambiguous climax.

There are many elements of this film worthy of praise. Kaluuya, Palmer, Yeun and gravel-voiced Michael Wincott, who plays a famous cinematographer with plans to get definitive footage of the alien, are all first-rate. Visually, the film is often spectacular because of the work of Cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema (“Tenet,” “Interstellar,” “Dunkirk”).

In my view, “Nope” is a smart, creative filmmaker just showing off. Here, he never chooses to fully pursue any of the themes he develops. But isn’t a key element of filmmaking the act of telling a coherent story or at least fully articulating a personal point of view? According to Jordan Peele, nope.

If a work of art does not amalgamate its own levels of reading, it prevents an organic and flowing fruition: if it limits itself to bundling up them disorderly, the disorganized jumble determines an understanding of specific scenes to the detriment of the others. Peele has no idea of the "systemic and all-encompassing will that looks to the great masters of cinema, such as Spielberg and Kubrick" (Emanuele Sacchi). Consequence: the overall result is less than the sum of the individual parts. The theoretical reflection on a "moral ecology of the gaze", from the praxinoscope onwards, is the biblical one of Nahum 3:6 and of "Peeping Tom" (Powell 1960), the denunciation of Hollywood as an exploiter "society of the spectacle", modern, technological, digital cinema industry capitalistically designed to produce perennial consumers, is that of Debord's situationism, the rejection of the oscillating confusion between reality and simulacra is that of Baudrillard, the criticism to the removal of the African-American contribution to the history of the West is that of Spike Lee. Evoking Shyamalan, Carpenter, Ōtomo, Anno, there are also sci-fy, western, horror, monsters, and once again the banal accumulation of genres does not transcend their boundaries, while the metaphors do not contaminate themselves, do not mix, each of them claims the entire attentional focus creating an archipelago of incongruous symbolisms. Bulimically indigestible.

Disappointment. Peele is certainly going more for spectacle over commentary this time around, but the characters are either annoying or unrealistic outside Palmer and Kaluuya (who are both really good!). Still looking forward to Peele’s next film.

I expected something much better. Too much downtime made the story drag. It's hard to build suspense when nothing is happening for long periods at a time. More like a series of vaguely related ideas stitched together than a compelling story.

I expected a denser plot, an explanation, maybe a relation to the first segment the film presents... just cat vs mouse and kind of pointless. Get Out was great, US and NOPE just don't seem to know which genre and tone they're going for, which is a shame.
Go watch the absolutely BRILLIANT 'The Vast of Night', which became one of favorite films, or the classic Close encounters of the 3rd kind, or even 'Communion' for a better experience with the UFO matter.

Peele is no fool, he may be a bit foolish in believing that all his ideas are worth more than the sum of their parts however, and the case of "Nope," the title itself being more of reference to "something, something pop culture," isn't an organic word nor a particularly interesting way of hooking your audience. If anything, "Nope," represents everything else that rightfully killed off M. Night Shyamalan's career, but have inexplicably allowed Peele to make more than a handful of middling to terrible movies that offer nothing new or interesting for people to watch or be questionably terrified about.

I've never even heard anyone talk about a Peele movie, I just hear about how many critics seem to think he's some sort of unsung genius. Oh, like "Kubrick," perhaps? Perhaps they meant John Carpenter, or maybe Hitchcock? David Lynch maybe? A genius he must truly be to trick many millions of people into buying tickets or settling around the streaming box on a friday or saturday night to watch the most generic garbage imaginable and then pretend its actually scary. You could make a movie about handpuppets scarier than anything Peele has put out, so perhaps they're thoughtful, introspective and intellectual dissections of our society today and the problems we face every year as human beings? Fat chance when you're literally ripping off "Invasion of the body snatchers," and ironically become the thing you were paying "homage" too to begin with. He's right, we should feel truly humbled by his brilliance, we are the idiots that keep buying into his mediocre mainstream horror ideas that couldn't scare Stephen King on a cocaine binge at three o'clock in the morning after 72 hours without sleep.

In short, the twist in this film is so stupid that it physically hurts to think about. Stop encouraging this man to make movies.

I found myself extremely bored most of the time but I ended up pushing forward to see who the antagonist is at the end. I was also curious to see why Daniel Kaluuya was looking 'up' in the movie cover photo and my theory was actually correct after barely making it to the final part of the film.

What I got was bizarre, confusing and full of plot holes. I don’t understand why professional critics seem to go out of their way to ignore gaping logic holes in Peele’s movies. It was the same was with “Us”, which was spooky and visually terrifying but had some seriously questionable logic in its storytelling. This movie took some time to get to the main story, spending a good deal of a half hour establishing the characters and backstory but then starts to pick up rapidly in what I was hoping was going to be a spooky and disturbing story. Which it was, for a little bit. Unfortunately, in what I can only describe as a Shyamalan like twist, the story takes a left turn into… what!? The last third of the movie becomes faster in pace than the rest, but turns into a strange and often confusing struggle with the characters doing things that bluntly, I didn’t understand. I left the movie feeling conflicted but as I’ve had more time to think over what I saw, has made less and less sense to me. The end verdict I had was that the logic of the movies simply doesn’t work. Yeah, it’s scary in parts and has some serious jump scares, but that doesn’t save it from it’s confusing illogic. And to be honest here, I didn’t really like any of the characters all that much either. They can be annoying and dislike able at times. Peele has finally worn out his welcome with me. As I said before, he’s become like Shyamalan, who took a good first movie and managed to make a lot of other movies, none of which were anywhere near as good. Maybe he should try returning to more comedy in the future. Rummage around and see if you can find Key’s number in your junk drawer. Expand

It is something aking to mental illness, neurosis. Secondly, he keeps on stealing from Glazer's "Under the skin". In "Get Out", he flat-out stole the iconic black void scene. Here he simply steals the whole premise of the film: An Alien race considering mankind as a form of delicacy.
If it were an improvement on the original, why not! However This feels just like a Night Shamalyan film. There are 20 minutes scenes that are completely void of meaning while others, filled with violence or "fast-paced action" are just red herrings. For a final reveal that leaves you feeling "been had".

I can't imagine the logic of casting Keke Palmer or allowing her to speak in general, but she makes this movie a torture. Even worse, she's only the worst of a number of characters who will make you wish cinema never existed

Why do critics love this dud?
A dumb story, with a couple of interesting characters and no fun. There is so much wrong with this movie, you wonder how it got made. The writing would not get one star on any of the screenwriting sites. So why

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just watched Nope. I can't tell you how much I hated this movie. Boring as hell. Not scary. Not engaging on any level. Basically one of the worst movies I've ever seen. An Alien bedsheet? Terrifying. A killer chimp? Friggin stupid. Don't look at the alien and it won't kill you. But then it kills you anyway. The only way this alien could possibly have really killed anyone is to have bored them to death. Don't waste your precious time you'll never get back by seeing this thing. Asking why it was made is the only thought you'll have after seeing it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nope is the perfect name for this movie. It's what I found myself saying to myself throughout the movie. And what I think everytime I'm looking for something to watch and this pops up.

I'm usually a fan of Peele's movies and while this was a an watch, I struggled to really enjoy it. I purposely avoided any trailers or information about this movie so I'd go in without any preconceptions. Throughout the movie, I flipped between "what a unique concept" and "what a ridiculous concept". Until the whole of the alien, nicknamed Jean Jacket, is revealed, I really couldn't take it seriously. UFO abducting people, fine. UFO digesting people, not as much. But when you see it for what it really is, it's actually a pretty cool alien. Until I read it in another review, it never occurred to me. But the plot is basically just Jaws. Except that it's a lot slower and dragged out. They could have easily shaved 45 minutes off. But by far, my biggest annoyance were the characters. I found them mostly just annoying. Either flat and boring or grating.

I think the Peele fell into the same trap as Shyamalan. While pushing unique concepts sometimes works, You also have to make sure that it's good. Unique isn't enough.
