If you want a movie that explains every single little thing, you will be disappointed. Part of what makes Peele's movies great is that they are open to many interpretations. Nope is no different. For example, the certain flashbacks are clearly meant to connect towards a certain character's motivations later in the film, but certain parts of said flashback that people are fixated on (a particular item of clothing specifically) don't really have a meaning aside from the one people will attach to it. Who is right? No one will ever really know. Regardless, at the end of the day this movie does what it's supposed to which is entertain and be anything but forgettable. Pay the man your $10 and hope we continue to get more original movies like this that take huge swings, make huge hits, and sometimes miss in equal measure. Expand

I don’t think it was as smart or high-concept as it was intended to be. It often misdirected the plot without any payoff or required some huge philosophical leaps to make any sense of the certain concepts. I believe it successfully created tension and dread with a lot of fun on the journey. It felt fresh and interesting, certainly worth seeing once but probably not one most people would go back to again and again like Peele’s first two movies. 6.7/10 Expand

Some people are saying that this is a masterpiece. Nope... it's most certainly not one. But it's definitely not bad by any means like some others are saying. I've seen a lot of alien movies, but I respect how incredibly unique this was. That's rare. The creature looked dope AF! The design was fantastic, and the concept was really good. I would say this creature is now one of my new favorites when it comes to original and creative alien ideas. There were some funny parts, but I feel like they had a funny scene or a specific thing, like "nope", and repeated it multiple times knowing it would get laughs. Whoever did the cinematography did really well! I loved the cinematography. I enjoyed the characters for the most part, but many were sort of lacking. They're not very memorable to me. In these kinds of movies, I don't know if "memorable characters" really matter, per se, because the entire point is the alien. I still liked them tho, especially OJ. He was my favorite. The pacing at the beginning for me was kind of slow for a bit and they added some things that, to me, were kind of irrelevant to the story. It didn't feel like 2hrs 11mins, but I feel like they still could have made it a tad shorter. The plot was... meh. Not anything too exciting or motivating. There were certain things about the alien that didn't really make sense to me. And a few things that were figured out by OJ that made me think to myself, "how did he even figure that out?" Other than that, I rather enjoyed this film, especially when I thought I wasn't going to like it because I didn't really like Us. Anyway, this was a creative, unique, and well-rounded movie/story and if Jordan Peele continues in this direction then I'm sure to enjoy much more of his films. Expand

This is not to take itself too seriously and not like Peele's last two films which held such suspenseful and real terroristic vibes to them. I get why the Gordy scene was included here but it realistically wasn't needed. The movie 1st appears to be an alien contact film, but evolves into something completely different. There are even some very Stephen King elelments in it, like Cujo. While it does feel a little drawn out at times, the movie would just as well work as a 3 episode mini series. Keke Palmer is a theif!!! She really stole the show. Peele has a talent of making a very focused story with a small cast. I can't wait to see what he does next!

One of the best films of the year so far.

I don’t want to delve too deep into this one early because I think to do so gives up some of the fun and I stand in solidarity with UK brothers. If Top Gun: Maverick reminded me of the kind of sincere blockbuster filmmaking of the 1980s than Nope feels like the kind of Spielberg spectacle of the 90s. It’s maybe Peele’s least metaphorical but still every bit as pointed as his previous work. It’s easily the most visually astounding film of the year and a massive step-up for Peele as a filmmaker. Peele’s imagination mixed with Hoyte Van Hoytema’s eye, my god, sublime. See this on the biggest IMAX screen you can, makes all the films with a budget of 100mil more look rough in comparison

The ominous atmosphere and use of sound and unique setting kept me at the edge of my seat from beginning to end. I loved the characters' backstories and I thought the acting was great. I was also struck by the fact that the human reactions and choices were the most realistic I've seen in a horror/alien movie in a long time, maybe ever. We had so much to talk about afterward as we were connecting the dots and thinking about it. It's not much for jump scares or gore, so if that's what you're looking for you may be disappointed. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Jordan Peele's take on the alien abduction subgenre of science fiction of horror is fantastic, and people should try to go into the movie as blind as possible. That said, the flashbacks about Ricky's past with the sitcom could be tied into the main plot a little clearer. It is obviously the reason why Ricky wants to try to control the alien, but it would be better if it was a little clearer. Expand

Honestly, to those saying this doesn't fit in with the rest of the Jordan Peele oeuvre, try to look at each of his films as a tale from one of the writer/director's favorite television series (one he rebooted himself in 2019): The Twilight Zone. This is a show known for outright horror stories, supernatural horror stories, sci-fi/horror stories, horror/thriller stories and sometimes even action-oriented/horror stories. In this respect, not only does "Nope" fit in with the rest of Peele's filmography, but I think it actually perfects a lot of what he was attempting on a thematic level with both "Get Out" and "Us." Nowhere near as overt as the former, nor as head-scratchingly oblique as the latter, "Nope" hands us the twist we want, but never knew to expect. The message therein is also something I can't say I've seen communicated in a movie in this exact way. This is a story about a somewhat niche, yet still thought-provoking subject. Others say the matters at play are strictly "Spielbergian," a word that I neither disagree with, nor treat as a kind of "scarlet letter" in this case. For me, I found myself thoroughly enthralled by the scale, scope and majesty of everything. Alas, it looks like I'm going to have to get comfortable with being in the minority on this one, as "Nope" is easily the most unique and effective movie of Peele's that this reviewer has seen. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I don`t buy the message here: that we`re all territorial animals (even aliens, exspecially apes) and shouldn`t look each other in the eye. I didn`t particulary like the characters, think that the film should have ended 5 minutes earlier (with Em looking at the sky) and think you really shouldn`t blend , well, certain body parts with an antique camera to create a monster. But this is an impressive film. How Lovecraft would have written a remake of "Tremors" after watching "Jaws". An elegant and hypnotic nightmare full of carefully crafted images and an eerie feeling of vulnerability and space. Some truly terrifying moments. Great soundtrack. Expand

Dealing, in one aspect, with African-American's history and legacy in the film industry. The main characters are descendants of the first person captured on film, a black jockey riding a horse. That person is a forgotten piece of film history, and never given their due. OJ and Em operate a horse ranch catering to film production, carrying on the tradition (and legacy) of their late father, portrayed by John Carpenter favorite Keith David (The Thing, They Live). There is a poster in their home of the early seventies film Buck and the Preacher, made at a time when "blacksploitation" films were made crossing many genres, from crime to horror to westerns. The business is going through tough times as real live animals are being replaced by much more manageable CGI. Because as the Gordy subplot reveals, it's near impossible for man to control nature, especially for entertainment and spectacle. And flesh and blood being replaced by machine. That's just one aspect. When ex child actor Jupe, recalls the incident where a chimpanzee attacks during the taping of a sitcom, he references an SNL sketch and a Mad magazine cover is shown. Tragedy is turned to parody (for our entertainment), and, of course, Peele appeared early in his career on Mad Tv, which ran opposite SNL. And Jupe tries to capitalize off that notoriety and exploit nature for his own profit, which does not go well. Peele references everything from Jaws, to Close Encounters (in Spielberg' s film objects electrically spring to life in the presence of the aliens, here, just the opposite), to even Akira. But he uses these references as loving nods. It's in no way a perfect movie, but it is a movie made by a man who LOVES movies, and it shows. Expand

You want a straight narrative? Go see something else. If you can use your brain and dig deep enough, all sorts of interesting layers present themselves. I really loved the open-ended-ness of this film. It can be bizzare (in spades!) and still a very entertaining romp as an action thriller. For me the key question I keep coming back to is the allegorical connection between the alien beings and the lethal TV sitcom chimpanzee (what a f'ing deep and powerful concept). And that's why Peele is a true auteur -- he creates spectacles that have multiple layers for observant people to sort through. I will gladly watch anything he decides to create. It will never be boring! Expand

Peele is a rather unique director to say the least. Several of his ideas are pretty wild and far out, and they don't always stick the landing in my opinion. I found 'Get Out' to be a clever and promising, albeit slightly overhyped directorial debut, and his sophomore follow-up film 'Us' I found rather confusing, clumsily executed, and just overall forgettable, so I went into this one with only modest expectations. And while I found this to be a bit more of a self-assured step in the right direction for Peele, I still don't quite find him to be the next big great director that several others would have you believe he is. I found it to be a slight step above 'Us', but I still believe 'Get Out' remains his best film, but again, this isn't saying much, since I only merely liked it and didn't love it like several others did. However, I can honestly say that this might just be his most tense, whack, and unsettling film yet too for better or worse. There are some genuinely eerie and disturbing moments and images in the film whenever it isn't being bogged down with a slightly excessive amount of set-up and exposition in the first half. One sequence towards the middle of the film involving dozens of theme park-goers being "abducted" has particularly been stuck in my head and haunting me all day long, it was that disturbing and unsettling to me. As for the performances, Kaluuya (who also starred in 'Get Out') gives a bold and confident leading man performance here once again, as does Palmer, whom I've missed seeing in films lately. Steven Yeun is also worth mentioning here as the runner of the theme park with a haunting and troubled past trying to cope with it the only way he knows how: by running a theme park to exploit and profit off of said past. The visuals are also worth a shout-out here, as some are very impressive, while others are pulled off in a more practical way. But overall, between Peele's bonkers screenplay/story, the at times ambitious scope and visuals, and solid performances from all involved, it all comes together to form another confident directorial effort from a flourishing auteur in the making, but also one whose reach exceeds his grasp and lands squarely in "good but not great" territory. Really liked the 3rd Jordan Peel movie, it might not be his best, but his standards are amazingly high. It has strange twist and turns all the way to the end. It reminded me most of Jaws and has a lot of elements from the classic shark movie.

Hard to talk about the plot and story without being spoiler-heavy, but it is all well worth the ride. Admittedly it does peter off toward the end and the payoff, while not bad, isn't quite as awesome as the build-up was, but it leaves room to potentially revisit the story.

The movie is good and interesting on its own. But it was created as a grand metaphor for media and social media. In that sense it is a masterwork. As a horror movie it is pretty entertaining and well done. But as a parable it is a must see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In Nope, Daniel Kaluuya‘s character’s name is OJ and his name is said maybe over 100 times. Keke Palmer’s Emerald even gets to say “run OJ!” That was my main problem with the movie. Since Jordan Peele’s OJ Simpson joke in Us. “Who is that outside ? OJ Simpson!” I think Kaluuya’s character named OJ isn’t coincidence. It was a distraction for me.
More disturbing than the reveal of what is going on is the killer monkey scenes. Where a monkey on set of a tv show snaps and kills some cast members. That I didn’t expect going in and it is disturbing and even sad.
I also haven’t pieced together yet what was the point in those scenes. I think though that there’s a hidden message about how people are never fully in control when working with animals.
The film gets compared to Spielberg meets Shyamalan. Yes it does have an eventual Jaws feel to it which is clever when you expect Close Encounters. You can throw in an occasional Quintin Tarantino style as well.
I was really into the movie but I don’t think it needed the traumatizing monkey scenes, honestly.

Well Jordan Peele has done it again with another terrific horror to add to his ever growing collection. If you loved Get Out and Us then be sure to get yourselves to the largest cinema screen possible to see Nope. As always this is a spoilerWell Jordan Peele has done it again with another terrific horror to add to his ever growing collection. If you loved Get Out and Us then be sure to get yourselves to the largest cinema screen possible to see Nope. As always this is a spoiler free review, however, the less you know about Nope before seeing it the better.

OJ Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) and Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer) are horse trainers on a ranch in inland California. They begin experiencing strange and unexplainable occurrences and decide to do some further investigation. The trailer gives you a pretty good indicator to where this movie is going but honestly regarding the plot the less you know the better. The same can be said for all Jordan Peele movies so I’d suggest you try to see Nope with as little information as possible. Peele has expertly blended genres here with Nope, it’s first and foremost a horror as there are scenes that are indeed chilling and will stay with you long after the movie has ended. Yet it’s also a sci-fi movie and a western. That’s three genres you don’t normally see combined together very often, especially like this, but the results speak for themselves.

There’s strong influences from other sci-fi movies and Summer blockbusters, Jaws immediately comes to mind. Particularly when it comes to building up to the spectacle, you’re not sure what you’re dealing with right away and you won’t be shown anything before you need to be. Nope immediately presents you with a hair-raising scene, and from that moment on, the suspense builds before it unleashes the chaos. So yes it’s a little slow to build but I promise the payoff will be worth it. You’re put on edge and kept there while the film follows a similar formula of other great blockbusters, constantly building the suspense. At times it almost feels nostalgic with reminders from other great sci-fi and horror movies along with some real life horrors mixed in there too. At the same time it’s very much it’s own thing and brings some much needed originality to the horror genre.

Again Peele gathers an ensemble cast of great actors, Michael Wincott, Steven Yeun and Brandon Perea, with the stand out performances being Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer as the Haywood siblings. It’s a small cast, which gives plenty of time to get to know the characters and more importantly care about them. Newer horrors seem to be continually falling into the same trap of endless disposable characters just there to be killed, whereas less characters with actual character development is far more effective and when things start going wrong you’re actually invested in what happens to them. They are well written, likeable and more importantly believable characters that react the way you’d expect when the weird stuff starts happening, much to the delight of the audience. Nothing beats seeing a terrific blockbuster in a packed cinema enjoying every minute of it.

I probably sound like a broken record at this point but we’re living in a time where the majority of films nowadays follow the same formula, and you end up seeing the same thing over and over again. Original ideas are always harder to get the green light so I’m always happy to see something new whether I liked it or not. In the case of Nope, I loved it and I’m still thinking about it. If we’re talking favourites, I’d still choose Get Out as my favourite but Nope is a close second.

Jordan Peele is a director who has a clear vision for his movies and you’re always guaranteed something new. Nope is no exception. You’ll jump, squirm and laugh. It balances humour and horror together while experimenting with genres and showing you something you haven’t seen before. To sum it up, it’s a horror/sci-fi/western infused blockbuster that I urge all of you to see. Highly recommended for the Jordan Peele and horror fans.

The action is good and the CGI are surprisingly very fresh in the way it's presented. Amazing work on the sound. The only drawback for me was the director character and it's motivations, especially what he did at the end. For me that made no sens. I give the movie 82%. I had to read online a bit about one part of the story in relation to the other. Maybe it was unclear in the movie, but after reading it, I felt it was showed but not explained. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nope was a perfect balance of suspense, tension, horror, and comedy. The writing was excellent; great at building suspense, loved for the majority of the movie the use of building fear with knowing something's there but you can't see it, and really loved the idea of the UFO being the actual alien. I liked the very unique and original alien design, with it not being the traditional look of a scary and creepy looking alien but still being very scary and daunting. Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer gave phenomenal performances and had superb sibling chemistry. Brandon Perea gave a pretty great performance as well. The visual effects of the UFO/alien was spectacular. The cinematography was beautiful done. Nope was just great at the use of originality. Expand

Jordan Peele has genuinely surprised me with his capabilities as a director. Who would've thought that a comedian could be so good at making genuinely interesting horror movies? So hearing how his next movie was going to be sci-fi horror, IJordan Peele has genuinely surprised me with his capabilities as a director. Who would've thought that a comedian could be so good at making genuinely interesting horror movies? So hearing how his next movie was going to be sci-fi horror, I was already onboard! Was Nope another homerun from Peele or is the title a perfect feeling for this film?

What stood out the most about this film to me was how amazing it looks. It is probably the most visually stunning movie Peele made so far. It's impressive that Peele managed to make a dull-looking setting, look beautiful. The cinematography captures the mesmerizing yet unsettling atmosphere of the story. Another aspect that makes this movie work so well is the terrific sound design. Hearing something moving in the clouds, the music slowing down and becoming deeper, a light turning off in the distance, the screams. The way Nope uses sounds to create creepy scenes is just wonderful. The mystery surrounding the UFO is incredibly engaging. The movie is constantly building suspense surrounding the UFO. Its presence is constantly looming over the characters and as the movie progress, we see more and more of what it is. Peele does interesting things with the UFO and actually makes it kind of scary. Nope has a constant theme that is explored throughout the film and that is "obsession". Our main characters are obsessed with getting the shot of the UFO and the lengths they will go for it, is insane. Other characters throughout the film are shown with their obsession, especially one with a certain chimp. I enjoyed the explored theme and showing how dangerous it can be. However, I do have a fair amount of problems with the film. The story is incredibly disjointed and not very connected either. The story's main focus is the UFO but it also has a subplot about a chimp that doesn't amount to anything. I understand that the chimp is another aspect of the theme but it's not connected whatsoever to the main overall narrative so it just feels like an unnecessary distraction. It also has quite a slow pacing which makes the movie feel longer than it is. It's also the least scary of the Peele movies. It does have around 3 unsettling scenes but that is not a lot in a 2-hour movie.

My biggest disappointment has to be the characters though. They're all very one-dimensional and bland. Daniel Kaluuya plays Otis who is just incredibly stoic and has minimal reactions to everything. Steven plays a charismatic guy who is just kind of there. Brandon Perea plays the most annoying tech salesman ever. Michael Wincott plays a renowned cinematographer that says things that sound profound but don't mean anything. Keke Palmer who plays Otis's sister, Em, is probably the only enjoyable character in the film because she has a personality and some kind of arc by the end. The dialogue that comes out of these characters feels so unrealistic or stupid which clashes with the serious tone of the movie.

Overall, I did enjoy Nope but it is definitely the weakest of his movies so far. It is still worth watching though if you have been a fan of his two previous works. I still think Peele is a phenomenal director and Nope doesn't change my belief in that. Peele has made me see clouds and chimps in a different light. I can't wait to see what Peele will do next.

It’s sitting at a 7 but I really want to give it an 8 however I need to watch the movie again before I do that so 7 for now. Nope is a weird film for me. 2/3rd’s of this movie is insanely good but the last 30 minutes are just kind of underwhelming to me. I’m hoping on rewatch that my thoughts will change. The ending only feels underwhelming because it felt somewhat less dramatic than the rest of the film. The whole movie for the first 2/3rds is creepy and downright terrifying at points and that isn’t there for the 3rd act. That’s really my major critique but since it’s the climax of the movie it does stick out like a sore thumb to me. Like I said though, the rest of the movie is insanely good. It’s scary at points and just downright disturbing in all the ways a horror movie should be. Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya are amazing in this and I hope to see more great performances from them in the future. Their characters are really fun to watch and get behind as they are just like us. Humans are naturally drawn to the unknown and sometimes we do whatever is necessary to try and capture it to show the world. The Gordy segments can seem a little confusing as to what they mean but not only are they downright scary and terrifying but it really adds to one of the film’s messages about not underestimating a wild animal as you don’t know how they will react regardless of how much you try to train them. The technical aspects of this film are pretty amazing across the board. The visual effects, sound design, cinematography, and music are all some of the best of the year and are definitely worth the price of admission. While I’m still a little unsure about the ending I still think that you should go see this film as soon as possible for everything else that I mentioned. Expand

Such a creative take on what could've been a typical alien flick. Was not only thrilling but emotional in its immaculate delivery of horror, tension, and mystery.

The beginning is a slow burn for character development but once it gets going it doesn't stop.

I would say that the majority of roles if not all are played to absolute perfection the highlight being Keke Palmer. On a scale of ten I would give this movie a nine. I look forward to seeing more of Peele's work.

But, after the first hour, we actually get to see the alien creature more and more and it looks pretty cool. The other characters in the movie are generally annoying, boring, or frustrating. However, underneath all of that there is a smart story being told, themes about the first thing ever recorded on video relating to how the characters want to capture the Nope on video. The second half of the movie makes up for the shortcomings of the first and the ending is so good it redeems the movie. I just wish it had been shorter and that they would put some more exciting plot points in the first half of the movie so they don’t put the audience to sleep before the good scenes start happening Expand

Another movie from Jordan Peele, we all know how outstanding Get Out and Us were, so it is obvious that a lot of people put high expectations to Nope. To me, does it live up to my expectation? Kinda
Good: The acting is great, characters have their own backstories and thoughts. The idea is unique and reckless. I mean, a movie about the UFO in 2022? That sounds boring as hell, but Jordan somehow still make the movie interesting and stimulate my curiousity through out the whole film. Cons (from my perspective): + So to me, I myself believe that it is better that the movie "hide" the outlook of the monster, like BirdBox did. I cant stand the "jelly-looking" outlook of the monster in the movie, i mean its pretty weird. + Antlers looks like a cool dude talking mysteriously all the time, but then he just died in a pretty stupid way, which I believe everyone would claim thats a "sacrifice for the world, for arts,.." .
+ Dont get me wrong, the monkey part and floating shoe is also extremely interesting but it doesnt really fit the movie that well, its rather a "supernatural thing" than a "outer space thing".
So 7.3/10 to me

All I can say is Jordan Peele has yet to give me anything I've seen before. This is a satisfyingly off-beat alien movie with the kind of story that can be as deep or as shallow as you want it to be. Yes, the plot does kinda just stroll along at times, but it never gets tedious and it does pay off nicely. And that one scene is just gonna be carved my memory forever. More than anything, it's NOT a paint-by-numbers UFO flick. Be forewarned.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. With every new Jordan Peele movie seemingly comes the promise of a new perspective on a classic movie trope or societal norm. Trailers for Nope would have you assume that applied to his newest film; that new perspective would be of the sci-if variety. And for the most part, it does. But two thirds into the movie, you realize that you are not watching a UFO alien invasion movie, per se, but a horror monster movie in the vein of The Creature from the Black Lagoon or even Jaws. And this twist is genius as it keeps the viewer thoroughly stitched to the edge of their seat. Starring a very understated Daniel Kaluuya and a very overstated Kiki Palmer as an odd couple sibling pairing, the stage is set with their bickering and complementary dispositions barely keeping their family business afloat after the recent passing of their father (played all too briefly by the silk-voiced Keith David). A nearly failed Hollywood hunt horse gig leads the costars to sell one of their last remaining horses to a local tourist trap mogul in the form of Steven Yuen who’s own backstory offers horrific flashbacks hinting at and mirroring the horrors around which the main story is set. Without getting too far into spoiler territory, these character’s stories all converge at the perfectly timed climax making all of the side stories and flashbacks all the more worth it.

Now, this ace cast is really just the batter to the cake while the visuals are certainly the frosting. Peele’s films are usually well shot and offer interesting visuals, but his third entry offers a visual style heads and shoulders above what we have seen before. The cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema and Peele collaborated to innovate the use of a dual camera system to capture the nighttime visuals. The night scenes were actually shot in daylight with one camera rolling film while a second camera recorded infrared light in order to see how moisture, skin, and every small detail would react under normal light conditions and placed into a nocturnally color corrected shot. The results are compositions that perfectly imitate the lighting effects one would experience while taking a stroll in the California desert under abundant moonlight. It might not be initially noticed, but take a second to appreciate those shots; you’ll be thankful you did.

While not a perfect film, Nope does much to offer new concepts and filmmaking technology while telling an interesting story with a familiar setting and trappings of movie classics. This is a movie you do not want to miss, even if you think the trailers gave away more than they should have (hint: they didn’t).

- great atmosphere
- intriguing mystery
- beautiful cinematography - the sound design!
- I could watch those characters easily for another hour or so
- When was the last time you could talk about a mainstream movie afterwards?

It starts out slow and the mystery gets revealed pretty fast (which was good for this movie) and from then on its pretty good and sometimes comedic. The ending took a bit long for my taste and some of the character actions did not really make a lot of sense and were mostly done to move the plot.
The casting was great but for the nigh scenes they had to work more on our main guy since you could barely differentiate him from the background and you couldn't really clearly see him and the emotions he was supposed to display. Thank god the movie was filmed mostly on daytime. The chimp sitcom was actually really fun and **** creepy which made me want to see a different movie about it lol. Overall give it a look!

His works rival other horror directors, except that Peele busts open genres with mind-bending concepts. Nope is no different, the reveal of the antagonist is utterly shocking and out of this world. You will never see it coming. Daniel Kaluuya delivers once again as the muse of Peele, playing a steady methodical character making sense of out of the senseless. Keke Palmer steals scenes with her fierce energy and quick thinking. This brother-sister duo carries the movie effortlessly. No matter how alien a thing is, it must follow logical rules, animal instincts and programmed behaviours. The best way to defeat an enemy is to understand it. Nope is a great horror movie with a massive payoff. Expand

Peele certainly knows how to make an intriguing and suspenseful terror/horror movie, and that continues here but with a sci-fi twist.

I'm not a Jordan Peele fan, really disliked "Get Out" and skipped "US" completely because it looked like more modern day woke racist bs that his first movie was. However, I'd be lying if I said I didn't somewhat enjoy Nope. I plan on giving it a rewatch at some point but on first viewing I'd give it a 6.5, maybe even a 7. It's easily a better shot and written movie than "Get Out", and other than a select few lines from the sister character in the beginning, race isn't focused on much in the movie. Maybe there is some underlying esoteric theme or subliminal message about race that Peele always seems to try and force in, but on first watch I'm not really picking up on anything like that. Expand

NOPE is mirrored off of one of my favorites. To say what might be a spoiler but I was really entertained and often scared... (might go up on a rewatch)

Two brothers who run a horse farm in California discover something wondrous and sinister in the skies, and the owner of an adjacent theme park seeks to cash in on the mysterious otherworldly phenomenon.
This film seen in theaters is a magnificent experience. A film that through Peele's classic political-satirical style is a strong critique of the unhealthy relationship between man and nature where the former arrogantly tries to subjugate the latter.
The film is full of tension and Peele offers wonderful camera movements that bring to mind the best works of Spielberg, Kubrick and Carpenter. The references to Spielberg's "Jaws" and Carpenter's "The Thing" are very clear.
The lateral tracking shots (for example those where he frames the stable and the house) bring to mind Hitchcock works while the blood flow on the house brings to mind Kubrick ones (The Shining).
A film that is complex and layered and needs multiple viewings to be understood and digested.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Different movie and not exactly what i guessed it would be. But it's in the ufo/alien category anyway. I didn't regret watching because it's another 'plausible' idea of other lifeforms and it has a modern take on the whole uap subject, but in it's own way. Who knows what's out there..... Expand

I loved the use of sound to strike terror in the viewer. The movie doesn't need cheap jumpscares or shock value gore to be scary. It lets you imagine what is happening which makes it even scarier. The cast was great and I cannot wait for the "Nope and Get Out take place in the same universe" theories. The reason this isn't as good as Jordans other films is the pacing. The movie was far too long and its pace screeched to a halt at times. I think this could have easily been 20 minutes shorter. Some other minor nitpicks:
-The monkey CGI isn't great -A character makes a few questionable decisions in the ending
- Lacks a clear message
But overall I would say that if you're a fan of Peele's other work you'll probably enjoy this too.

The excellent script of the film and the direction were spoiled by the naive depiction of the monster, whose morphology and behavior were rather laughable...
