Darren Aronofsky's Noah smothers the powerful story by plunging in an extensive use of non-biblical muck. Wrecked the titular character and wasted the film's own potential in an extravaganza of left-leaning political garbage.

Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" is a thought-provoking blockbuster epic. The special effects and family conflicts work, but the film drags when it is not focused on its main plot.

I was somewhat bored with the first 15-20 minutes and didn't feel like the story was set up that well, which would have really paid dividends later. But once you get through the odd introduction and get rolling with the film, substance suddenly appears. The fallen angels idea was a fun fantasy insertion and the depiction of Noah at times makes good on the observations found in the book of Genesis and how Noah may not have been what we'd consider a saint but was a foundationally-good and noble man that God could work with to restart mankind after the corruption of Cain. The special effects were pretty solid and the casting was overall well executed. It's not a movie I'd love and I may not watch it again but when the film wrapped up I was at least somewhat happy I watched it. If the second half had been less interesting or fumbled like parts of the first half were, I would have probably come away with an indifferent 5 or 6 rating instead. The building of the ark, which is a significant detail of the original story, is almost glossed over and handed off to supernatural beings (not a spoiler), at least in part. This aspect would have been a huge opportunity to expand upon the trials of the wilderness and Noah's family keeping their ark project a secret but the producers didn't feel the building portion to be all that important to focus on. Worth a watch if you're interested in the story the movie is lifted from but as for historical accuracy/source accuracy, it's probably about 50%-60% accurate and the rest is either creative license and outright Hollywood hogwash. The CGI allows for great scenes and extraordinary sequences, such as theBiblical themes are always pleasing in the movies, but they're also complex and require some care and attention. This Darren Aronofsky's was technically well done. The CGI allows for great scenes and extraordinary sequences, such as the creation of the world or the flood itself, mixing the biblical text with scientific facts we know today. Cinematography is great, with alternating moments of light and shadow, serving the purpose of characterizing and giving personality to the two opposing factions (the sons of Cain and the sons of Seth). Clint Mansell's soundtrack is equally impressive, creates a good ambiance and gives intensity in the right moments. The actors also did a good job, particularly the antagonistic duet Russell Crowe / Ray Winstone. They're very related to each other because they're the mirror of each other, insofar as one is all that the other isn't. The remaining cast is more restrained, allowing them to have some deserved protagonism. Anthony Hopkins appears in a small role but to which he conferred dignity. "There are no small roles, there are little actors," isn't it? The worst of this movie? Two things: the first is to disappoint the expectations of the public. Whole movie seems a huge metaphor, as if the elements on scene were symbols meant to update the story and bring it closer to our reality. Taking the most striking example of this, the cities of the people of Cain are so savage and cruel that they seem to be dystopian metaphors of our great metropolis. If this was the director/writer's idea, then it's something quite original, but it shocked with all the expectations we might have, and, when that happens, it's so dangerous as a double-edged sword, as the audience can Not understand the intentions of the director. Even I was expecting something else, and even though I recognize the originality of the film, I still feel sorry for not being quite what I expected. The second problem of the film is those fallen angels invented by the director and surely influenced by the story of the angels revolt and their fall to the world. It was a bad idea for the director. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is one thing for certain about "Noah" that I think everyone will agree with - what Aronofsky does with the film is both very surprising and very creative.

It is another great movie to his collection, though it will require a second viewing to determine how much I really liked it. But 8/10 is the minimum for now.

As I mentioned, the movie is surprising, strange, and at some points maybe a bit too much so for its own good. The fallen angels/rock people were very imaginative, though they played such a notable part, especially when then battled masses of people, that hey felt like they would be more suited to a Lord of the Rings sequel.

Similarly, Noah going psycho on his family made for a very suspenseful and entertaining final act...but it went on for so long, it felt like we were stepping into the Shining.

The great things about the movie really shown, however. The creation story sequence that Noah shares with his family is incredible, ranks with some of the very best work Aronofsky has done.

The pro-environment themes of the movie were delivered beautifully and with great force, which explains why many people turn against this movie just for that. People get uncomfortable when their choices in life are questioned.

Noah clearly condemns what mankind is doing to nature and to animals, and describes it as one of the main reasons for God's punishment. As if back then man's treatment of others was bad, one can be said about today's? The unspeakable atrocities animals are subjected to, the continued destruction of the forests and the oceans - despite the work of a brave few, the relentless destruction of the planet for human greed continues. Tubal-cain's speech about how animals are meant to be used and abused by humans would likely get a rounding applause by most people.

The movie goes deep into biblical themes as well, such as Noah questioning why the flood is happening, wondering why he was allowed to live, and wondering what exactly is righteousness and being a good person. Does willing to kill for one's child make one good? What about killing a child for God? The 'answer' hinted by the movie seems to be love for the family. It definitely provided for some great drama and very strong character scenes. I am not quite sure that the Bible is as clear as that. And I am not sure what the answer is. But in any case, Aronofsky does a very good job of interweaving these questions into the movie, and making us care for the characters through them.

A word about the acting too, which was stellar. Crowe was brilliant, and absolutely nailed this dark-Noah version. Some of the best work of his career, and that's saying something. Connelly did an award-winning job as well.

Overall, "Noah" is terrific entertainment, a great achievement, and hits it as some very deep questions, even if it may come out as a bit Aronofosky-light. For now I would place it somewhere around the middle of his films, bellow both The Fountain and The Wrestler, but even so, it finds itself among some brilliant movies.

Oh, and I do hope Methuselah's berry tasted good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly, I have no idea what the Biblical version of this story actually is other than the pretty basic Noah has two of every animal on the ship thing. That being said there were so many problems with this movie. It is begging to have an MST3K episode actually. The part with the rock transformer things- really? That was so ridiculous. I was also very confused about how the "ark" was seemingly completely stationary (seemed a lot more like a large cargo container) but survived the flood. It was not as high as the mountains and those got covered with water so how did that ark not get covered with water. There was a filler section that showed Noah talking about man killing each other and it showed shadows of men with machine guns...Also, the end where it showed all the different animals and their babies should have had "copyright of the Discovery channel" because it really looked like stock footage. Some of it was even in standard definition. There was absolutely no emotional connection to the characters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie is not worth a watch at all. I was watching this late at night and seriously considered just going to sleep on the couch. Also, I must mention that I am not a religious person at all, and I gave my score solely based on the weak aspects of the film.

First, half of the characters were dull or flawed. For example Noah was way too harsh and even stupid on his 'humanity will ruin the earth' speeches. Otherwise, the characters didn't ruin the movie too much, and I can even say that some of them played quite well at times.

The plot was laughable; There was way too much random, absurd, and boring times throughout the movie. Backstory was kind of nonsensical, and the beginning of the movie wasn't all that great, but it was acceptable, I'll give it that. The 'battle' felt short, started too early in the movie and was an obvious attempt to add unnecessary action, that was weakly executed on top of that. The second half was a huge drop from the poor action; it was boring beyond belief. The film deteriorates from saving the innocent animals and resisting an evil king to small scale family problems amongst the floating ark. In my opinion, there shouldn't have even been anything after they set sail (apart from the king getting on the ark, that was done alright). Overall, the cheap attempt at action and drama took its toll, creating strong negative feeling about the film, combined with some flawed characters and backstory.

The only redeeming factors are the cinematography, somewhat rare parts with good acting, kind of decent choreography in the scenes that had it, and the very, very little good plot choices that were made in the overall messed up plot.

Sweet clouts of humour, generosity from the righteous and no vanity. Overall, a movie worth watching, with breath catching nodes.
The lead of the movie is one that shows the marshalling of planet earth before humans begin to live on it and breathe its air. High and mighty is the evil that has sunk too deep and dark, the rising of the good and innocent is made to sink with the beastly, creepy and foul breath of every nefarious human, which corrupts the fresh air of the planet, with betrayal, murders, cruelty and unfathomable sins. Hence the imagination of god, for the future of these reprobate is the destructive impetus of water for cleansing. Good doesn’t space out and collate itself in the time of destruction, but during the time of saving the creation, on the boat in the form of children, where the real existential fight of good over evil is shown. Noah, the chosen one is to facilitate in the shining of new dawn and the shadows of a new era reflecting on this planet earth, by saving the innocence of the planet.
There is a wild discrepancy in the original biblical words and it’s spouting in the movie, no sacrilege and sacrifice from the forces of good make it a true biblical story.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was a movie that could have been good, but they made it drag on and on. Someone else said that it was a good movie chopped up and spread across a field of bore(my complete paraphrase), and they were spot on. I take off 3 points for the extra half hour they should of trimmed off. There were times I almost turned it off because it was so slow.

I take off 2 points for its overwhelming preachiness. This flows from the same error as the last point deduction. They get a point across, and instead of being done, they pound it into you until your eyeballs bleed. It makes the movie slow, and takes good dramatic moments and makes them slow and painful.

I take another 2 points for random stuff like him letting a girl get run over and killed, when picking her wouldn't have changed the fact that he couldn't out run the crowd, and the whole talk with his wife about how he would kill to protect his children and that makes him evil. but killing guys who killed a deer? Totally cool.

lastly It is completely off biblically, so when you watch it, just pretend you're watching a random fiction film. I don't take any points for that though, it just falls under the category of suspension of knowledge which most movies require.

ps. The movie also acts like animals are these little angels. Apparently they don't have animals in Hollywood, because if they did, they'd realize the evil people in Noah were acting like animals.

The visuals are great and the rock warriors were the coolest part of the entire movie.

This movie may rely a little too much on special effects but it was still pretty solid. Nice to see a little bit of a twist on this story. Seeing Noah as a bit of an anti-hero instead of a courageous hero.

"Noah" 10 Scale Rating: 5.0 (Mediocre) ...

The Good: The cast was outstanding, especially Russell Crowe as Noah. The film goes through several stages of Noah's life and his personality changes throughout. Crowe was more than capable of making that seem realistic and believable. The film's base premise is a man balancing what he believes is right with what is best for humanity. That aspect was interesting and comes to a head late in the final act. Portions of the last 30 minutes are amazing. At it's core, it's also an interesting take on a tale that we all know by heart.

The Bad: It's too long and isn't quite interesting enough to fill the time. The first hour or so is difficult to get through and the last 10 minutes drag on way too long. Some aspects are sort of silly as the film blends historical fiction with sword and sorcery. It doesn't mesh well.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of reviews of Noah discuss the straying from the biblical story or other 'spiritual' aspects of the film. As someone who experiences a great movie as a spiritual journey in itself I found Noah to be complete crap. I actually thought the first few minutes (before Mr Crowe appears) were an elaborate piss take of the actual movie (in fact I still am not sure the people who rated this movie highly saw the same movie I did).

The garden of eden scenes were high school project quality. The Watchers, the whacky rock transformer Ent giant things, were rejects from Shrek. The characters are inexplicable and lack depth. His two older sons are just horny at the end of the world. At least the older one gets Emma Watson, even if she is barren (like most of the scenery before the magic seed is planted and a giant forest appears). Ham the middle son is just a sexually frustrated teenager with a tyrant for a father. One of the many non-sensical plot twists is when Ham goes searching for bacon (makin' bacon bacon) in the city and falls into a pit of dead bodies. What does he find? The girl of his (wet) dreams. They climb out as it starts to rain (not end of the world rain just a splattering) and everyone goes crazy stupid berserk. They all start charging for the Ark. Ham's babe gets caught in a bear trap and Noah arrives and forces Ham to leave her there to be trampled by the horde. While all this is going on the older brother is boinking Emma Watson who has been given a womb by Noah's grandfather, nutty berry lusting drugged out medieval hippy, Anthony Hopkins.

Noah somehow gets the notion in his head that his mission is to get the animals going again and kill all the humans. Ok, we are all sinners but no where in the movie does it really say where Noah got this idea. This creates Noah the Nutjob, hell bent on killing his new grandchildren. His wife begs him to punish her and not kill the children. What exactly this means and how this would appease Noah's distored mission from god seems only to indicate that Noah's wife has no understanding that her husband consumption of grandpa's hallucinogenic tea concoctions has had a permanent effect.

This sort of nonsense just keeps coming to the very end of the film. I think Aronofsky, Crowe, and everyon else involved will be forgetting this one is in their reprotoire pretty quick.

Christians who take the Bible literally will be offended, athiests wouldn't come within Noah with a ten-foot pole, that sort of thing. It's a lose-lose situation, which is a crying shame, because it's most probably Aronofsky's greatest work since Requiem for a Dream. Very inspired decision reuniting A Beautiful Mind's stars Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, while Sir Anthony Hopkins really shines as Earth's oldest human being (Noah's grandfather Methuselah), it has the best acting I've seen from Emma Watson, and Ray Winstone is very good as the villain. Take it from the doves and grab this olive branch, and see this fine film for what it truly is--a very rewarding experience which examines the power of miracles and the equally fascinating mysteries of love and mercy. “In the beginning there was nothing.” Says Noah when he describes the creation to his family while they are floating on the water surrounded Earth.
As I was watching Noah (2014) my mind got filled with lots of questions and yet new ideas of brilliance about the truth of what was going on in the past of humankind and of course the past of creation. From the fallen angels who disobeyed the creator to help human and therefor were punished to be transformed from light and trapped into bodies of stones until they got released asking the creator to forgive them and ascended back to the heaven, it made me realize how ungrateful human is and yet how stupid it could be. It, the movie, also solved some of my questions.
Temptation led him to eat the forbidden fruit, and descended him to the Earth, it began to kill his own kind and turned the world into a planet of horror. But after generations there comes a man of light whose task is to lead the world into a new beginning by wiping the ugliness of generation of disobeying people off the face of the Earth having them all sunk. The creator chooses him to finish what was left to be done … but soon he realizes there is a choice to let it go on with mankind life or to abort the existence of it.
Emotionally struggled between his feelings for his family and his will to do the right with the creator, Noah says to him “I will not fail you” and repeats it three times determined to end the violence brought to the Earth by man abusing the knowledge that fallen angels had given to them of creation.
There are many great scenes in the movie but for me, there was nothing more tremendous than to see the sudden bloom of a flower by a drop of rain or the sudden growth of trees from a barren land which compelled me to think about the majesty of the creator once again but this time deeper from a clearer view; there is nothing that he can’t do.
However, before the movie was over the idea that how different and perhaps diverted the story and the characters of Noah and his family members are from the original ones I had heard came to my mind. It had lots of paradoxes with what was narrated in Muslims’ Quran and although I am no familiar with the real Bible but I can say it for certain that it is in contradiction with it to. For instance the long age of Noah comes to the mind that no evidence of it could be seen in the movie. It seems that the writers (Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel) haven’t done a complete research for a project that its name proceeds the whole Cinema in history genre put together.
When I saw Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly playing together in A Beautiful Mind (2001) as a couple whose relationship was disturbed by the hallucinated imaginations of Dr. Nash (Russell Crowe), I was so amused by their realistic and amazing performance and now to see them back together again in Noah, I can’t think of any other couple of actors who could play the roles as good as they did.
The visual effects, on the other hand, are not so eye catching comparing to the previous works of Paramount Pictures like Titanic (1997). The animals could easily be found as immaturely animated and the species like the cats are hidden from the eyes in the majestic entrance of the animals into the arc. I think The Ten Commandments’ (1956) creators would be doing a better yet more realistic job of making Noah. Of course it was in no compare with Darren Aronofsky’s previous jobs like Black Swan (2010). However, to sum up nearly 2000 years of Noah’s life and capture it in a 2+ hour feature with a though diverted but a rather straight storyline without any excess inclination in it was an absolutely daring work that Darren did.

The story of Noah and the ark is a very old, well respected, and loved story, many people believe those events really occurred. When you get the chance to make a movie that stems directly from The Holy Bible, you would think it would stay knit at the waist with it as far as accuracy and tone. Aronofsky is obviously not a religious man, otherwise he would have had much more respect for the story of Noah and the nature of the characters involved. Portraying Noah, who has been said to have been directly guided by God to save the human race and its righteous moral ideals, as a crazed lunatic who spends most of the movie dazed and confused about his purpose who needs help from giant rock people and who eventually is convinced he needs to kill his family, is quite a slippery direction to take. it doesn't seem to paint a pretty picture of God or his followers. Though I will note that that the title "God" was not even used once in the entire film. From the artsy perspective, this was a well done unique piece of movie making. That explains why a simple bible story made it to such a large scale movie in this day and age. It was warped. Severely. The graphics were impressive and dazzling, the acting performances were polished and sharp, it was coordinated well. But the point of telling the story of Noah and his trials with the flood and the rest of a wicked world and a wicked people, and his dealings with God, got completely lost. Way to go. I cannot support this movie. Expand

Though, I think much of the divisiveness surrounding this one is due to many religious folk walking in and expecting a re-enactment of the Bible word-for-word with no added elements and no alteration of anything. Even as a Christian, I realize how stupid that demand is. As a whole, I largely enjoyed Noah. The performances from Russell Crowe, Ray Winstone, and Emma Watson, are all very good. Jennifer Connelly is also alright (though there is one scene where she struggled pretty badly). I also enjoyed many of the added elements, such as the Watchers (the rock creatures). They received the most criticism from hardcore Christians, but for me, I loved what they added to the film and their journey was just as riveting as that of Noah. Up until the flood, this film is brilliant. Post-flood, however, things begin to follow apart (while I liked Winstone's acting, I don't like his character being added and it all felt so cliche). However, it does pick back up again towards the end and convinces me there is brilliance in this somewhat broken film. The cinematography is very consistently beautiful. Some of the shots here are absolutely gorgeous (by some I mean the vast majority). The direction from Darren Aronofsky is also characteristically strong here and while this may not be my favorite film by him, it is still a great example of his talent. Overall, Noah is far from perfect, but is a solid film that does not try to be a Bible film, so do not come expecting that. Rather, it is more along the line of apocalyptic epic, Expand

This film was simply two hours and fifteenI'm going to step away from all religious interpretations and regard this simply on its merits as a film, not as a traditional biblical story. The problem is, it doesn't really have many merits. This film was simply two hours and fifteen minutes of tedium. The special effects are barely worthy of a SyFy Channel original film. The acting is overly hammy and in some cases mind-numbingly wooden, part of which I feel is the part of the script, which eschews actually writing good dialogue for what seems to be just spewing out statements at random. The editing ranges in style from choppy to lingering overly long on mundane, uninteresting scenes. Everything is just...off. As bad as everything else felt, the score was possibly worse. I've never had issue with the work of Clint Mansell before, but for Noah he's opted for a blaring two note score that just keeps screaming the same two flipping horn blasts in your face over and over again. This is also the first time I would ever describe Aronofsky's directing as "ham-fisted". Everything feels overdone, self-indulgent and overproduced. I usually walk out of a Darren Aronofsky film contemplating the themes and mulling it over in my head to uncover deeper meanings. This one only stayed with me as a bad memory. Expand

Secondly, it didn't actually happen! It's a myth! One of several deluge myths in ancient middle and near east religion. What Aronofsky does is mint a new version, and it works. Expectedly on some levels, as Aronosky uses typical visual inventiveness to tell the story. One highlight is the creation story-within-the-story interlude which is dazzling, another are his invention of the Watchers, and their nod to both Giacometti and Ray Harryhausen. But also unexpectedly, as we are, for the most part rooting for good Old Testament Yahweh and his plans to cleanse the world, such is Aronofsky's ability to depict it as relentlessly mired in vice, and in doing so hold an uncomfortable mirror up to our own rapaciousness. But this would be for nought if Crowe couldn't make the role work. He does, giving Noah pathos, intensity, a deep inner sadness. It's dark, it drags a bit if you're not lapping up the art direction, and arguably loses it's way a little in the final third, redeeming itself at the very end, but this is bold, intelligent film-making in a different league to the vacuous output of someone like Michael Bay. In time will be appreciated as a minor masterpiece. Expand

There are many versions of 'Noah's Ark'Usually everyone knows what it's about after reading the title, but the thing is how much it will surprise us with newly initiated contents like visuals, story alteration, performance and finally 3D. There are many versions of 'Noah's Ark' story including animations. So I expected it wouldn't work as a full-length feature film, Especially in live-shot version. But got a good response by performing decently everywhere. A perfect way to say about the movie is it was an ancient version of the movie '2012'. No science involved, only fantasies. Remember the character Noah was not exactly a good guy either bad in this story. He was portrayed in such a dark and complicated personality who take the responsibility that was given to him by the creator.

After witnessing his father's murder, now Noah is a grown up lives with his wife and three children along with one adopted daughter. One night he dreams with the unclear visuals. The next day he visits his grandfather to know more what the dream is about. Then he comes to know the message and prepare to face it. In between, a war commence waged by a king to save humanity. Who wins, who loose and how it all happens comes later with a few brutal incidents.

I like this director's 'The Wrestler' and 'Black Swan' than his other movies which were a massive hit. I expected this particular story could be more realistic manner, but I was wrong and it was a fairy-tale kind of approach made for grown ups. Why it suits only for adults? Because so many elements were too rude, especially inclusion of all the intense violences were not in favor of children to view. Other than that there's no nudity or sex scenes. All this is because of Noah was exhibited in such a strange shade. That end scene where Noah was drunk I can't even believe it. In the last half an hour Russell Crowe's role turns into what he did in 'Les Misérables' versus Emma Watson (Hermione, who was defenseless).

‘‘The rain has stopped
but the creator has not smiled.’’

This is the story that must inspire the viewers, though it won't do that. One thing it did right was it was completely a different. Awesome visuals and really I enjoyed watching it in digital 3D. The cast was not bad at all, as being in a main role Russell Crowe had large portion and others were just into it to show their presence. Overall, I feel it was taken as a challenge by the filmmaker, but a well done work, definitely not offensive, maybe slightly regarding religious perspective. Entertainment wise, it was a better movie, especially for a film adaptation. In my opinion, I believe it is okay to see at once.

It focuses on aspects that you won't hear in Sunday school. It takes a look at the emotional and mental tole the events had on Noah and his family. Watching them break and suffer over what is happening to those not on the ark is powerful. Russell Crowe delivers a fantastic performance as Noah, truly bringing the character's emotional complexity to life as he slowly begins to question why these events are happening, why he was chosen, and what he should do next. It really focuses on the morally grey aspects of the events, and shows that God, or "The Creator" as he is called in the movie, is capable of wrath as well as love.

I feel that this side the movie shows, as well as the fact that it does take some liberties with the Biblical telling of the story, will anger many people. Most likely the Christian audience who refuse to accept anything but the truth. I can appreciate, respect, and understand why those like that will feel that way. So I recommend they avoid it because of that. It was already said before it came out that the movie was not meant or going to be Biblically accurate, so it's best that the two don't mix.

For others though this is a gripping, emotional, and complex movie that I really recommend be checked out. I believe it also has the potential to do something few other movies based on religion do; It has the potential to make people actually interested in what the Bible says about what actually happened. I find that incredibly impressive. As someone who thought the movie would fail I must say I am incredibly impressed with has happened here. It's an all around excellent movie, and one that has the potential to get people interested in the Bible. As far as I'm concerned it's a top-notch movie that should be at the top of your must-watch list.

Noah starts off surprisingly terrible and then manages to rise just above mediocrity in the end. A Strange way to present the story. It was no fun at all. The visuals were good at times.

For a 2 plus hour film, no time was spent dealing with the struggle to build the ark. Poof it was built in 2 mins and all the kids were grown. Expand

I am a Christian, My relationship with God and his son Jesus is the most important thing in my life! Now with that being said, I absolutely loved Noah! Do not listen to what all of the people are saying about this film. Yes, it does have one particular element where the director obviously took some creative liberties with the story but to me that was okay. The story of Noah is one of the shortest in the Bible, and a lot of the details are left to your imagination. That is where this film comes in, it shows the dark side of Noah. The stories we heard when we were little kids are the same stories per say, but they are much much darker than we could understand. Which is exactly what I loved about this film! Instead of exploring humans through the eyes of God like so many other movies do, this explores God through the eyes of his servants. It shows their struggles, their sacrifices, their doubts and ultimately how strong their relationship with their creator must be in order to make it in this harsh world! Noah is one of the best films I saw all year! If you are a Christian, or even if you're not, give it a try. I'm sure you will be glad you did! Expand

An epic derived, not from the biblical telling of Noah, but from Hebrew, Gnostic, and Kabbalist texts, interweaving the familiar story with stark and beautiful pagan imagery to create a wholly unique film. With Noah, Aronofsky proves that the story of the great flood does not belong just to Christians, but comes to us from a multitude of different faiths and, with it, different interpretations.

Fascinating history aside, I would recommend this film on the visuals alone. Aronofsky affects a primordial landscape; the world of Noah is as alien a world as our planet would have been hundreds of thousands of years ago, a wholly different and unfamiliar place. Great care is taken with every detail and I loved the little touches like the animals on the ark consisting of prehistoric creatures.

My only complaint would be that the tone and pacing of the story is a tad disjointed. The movie begins as sort of post-apocalyptic fantasy, slowly evolving into a full-blown LotR styled epic as giants, mystics, and massive battles are introduced, only to take a jarringly dark left turn once Noah and his family are actually on the ark. Though I highly enjoyed the idea that a man who speaks to God can't help but lose his mind, the third act is drawn out needlessly long.

Noah is a fantastic modern epic. No matter your faith or belief, I highly suggest you give this movie a chance. You may be pleasantly surprised with what you find.

At the end, Noah is still hearing voices from on high and believing that, because of that, he is right, infallible, and righteous. Very moving version of the classic old testament story. Really keeps your attention from start to finish. A powerful tale of good versus evil. One man's struggle to decide the fate of humanity.

Dark, brooding and surreal; Aronofsky's epic is beautifully shot and ambitiously conceived. Most importantly it gives Biblical lore a healthy dose of human realism - not a bad thing at all.

We know that the Noah story borrows many elements from the Epic of Gilgamesh. This movie creates an even deeper story that finds that man has destroyed his environment and his lust for violence and domination has brought him to the brink of ruin. It recreates the whole history of creation by fast forwarding the “days” of creation into the evolution of the universe and the life forms on earth. This is a new and revivifying story and one that needs to be told alongside our other stories to carry us forward with the mission of Noah to renew the earth all over again. Expand

As a filmmaker, I would simply be ashamed to present this garbage to an audience. Sub par CGI, horrible acting, dialogue that makes you cringe. The costume department must have had an off day as well. Just awful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Noah started promisingly enough by positioning the titular Biblical character as something of an environmentalist - a completely natural trait to show, as anyone who cares about animals must, by default, also care about their habitats and flora - who was at odds with what appeared to be something of a Man-created wasteland in the souring world around him.

However, from here the film drifted more than the ark atop the floodwaters, ultimately washing up at an underwhelming finale. As an atheist, I've no problem whatsoever with Aronofsky having added rock-angels (the Watchers) to central roles within the first half of Noah's story, as such fallen figures - in other elemental forms - actually do (rarely) pop up in (much, much) lesser-known niche corners of the broadly Christian faith, albeit not in Noah's story. So, it didn't bother me at all that, essentially, some cranky, spidery rock monsters helped Noah build the ark in this film, in preparation for The Flood. Fine.

The problem was that once The Flood gets under way, Crowe's sympathetic Noah switches from being a largely sympathetic and decent (if driven) character to someone who could just be seen as a near sociopath with borderline schizophrenic tendencies, by contemporary standards. After all, if God has decided that the world is to be destroyed, and that *everyone* else must die - as heard/known by Noah alone, of all men - well, that's good enough for Crowe's character, who helps God out by killing/murdering desperate people trying to get aboard the ark as the flood washes in - all the while as The Watchers jerkily play whack-a-mole with the throng trying to get past their perimeter around the ark. Stab, stab, stab. Squish, squish, squish. Splash, splash, splash. No, Noah, no!

Then, once the boat's afloat, Noah's character appears to go somewhat mad, driven by his absolute religious fervour and devotion to the will of God that he alone can tune into, as he prowls and stalks the ark. While that was potentially an interesting treatment - was Noah saving his family, or were they trapped aboard with a madman? - it just felt jarring, as Noah's brooding character became stranger and angrier, creating something of an antihero.

Some ill-advised casting also add a few rocks to the ride - Emma Watson is particularly all at sea; her boat-bound beau has little to do but stand around like a hirsute Hipster, looking cute but gormless; and Ray Winston's character has all the depth of a puddle - don't help, although Tony Hopkins has a cute and kindly cameo.

The terror and power of The Flood was never really to the fore; the wisdom of God's decision (if any) to have a do-over for Humanity never really shone through, and the somewhat turgid pace just saw the film plod along in the second half, like one of those deathly-dull religious films used as filler in the wee hours on smaller TV channels, albeit with brisk enough dialogue, while the score never hit any particular high notes.

It wasn't all dull fare, as Aronofsky added a number of almost stop-motion jump-cut sequences here and there, such as tracing The Creation - a sequence beautifully presented and designed with flickering artistry, and a suggestion that, of course, the Seven Days don't necessarily tally with Man's understanding of days and time. In this regard, Aronofsky pretty successfully - if briefly - tapped into a number of wider religious/spiritual themes that deserve following through, whether by him or another.

So. Conclusion. It was an interesting film that doesn't deserve the nonsensical bile and insults hurled at it from certain Christian fundamentalist quarters. However... it just wasn't a very good one, either, being a little too dull and earthly, for want of a better word. Angry Noah certainly wasn't someone who I'd choose to reboot a world with, put it that way, while a central conceit of the tale - Could *you* live with the guilt if *everybody* else in the world was killed - including every newborn baby and child - except for you and your small family? Could you accept that *you* did *nothing* to help drowning people all around you? - was never touched upon.

I'd be interested if Aronofsky were to take another story from the Bible, Koran or whatever for another film, but as it stands, the thought of having to sit through Noah again would leave me with a sinking feeling...

I know Scifi channel could have done a better job. The story was dull, the characters cranky, and in the end, it all seem pointless. Aronofsky ruined the character of Noah and turned him into a maniac.
I'm concerned that future generations will turn to this movie and consider this trash as the actual Noah story when it is pure blasphemy and far from what's told in the Bible.

The main problemI am a longtime fan of the director so my disappointment here is massive. In a nutshell it is a pro-veganism, pro-ecology,pro-self-hating,pro-social isolation and anti-progress gritty reboot of the known tale of the Bible. The main problem with this movie and its most unforgivable trait is that it tries sadistically hard to enforce those ideals to the viewer, to the point that it makes the viewer actually hate the protagonist and his headstrong self-righteous opinions. The society it shows of Sodom and Gomorrah is clearly a parallel of our society today. The only things that differentiate it is the lack of iphones and presence of rugs. 'We are evil and deserve to be destroyed' he preaches. 'It is a crime against nature to eat an animal' he says and insinuates by showing a man gutting a lamb with his bare hands and eating it raw. This is the work of a raging misanthropist wrapped in a Michael Bay exterior so the masses he hates so much will flock and pay to watch his delirium. Despite sharing some of his views,I cannot help but hate this unprecedented ideological enforcement and the movie as a whole as a result. If you can ignore all of the above, the movie has some strong visuals and performances by the cast and maybe you should give it a go. If not stay away. Expand

Even the animals & ark, 2 important "characters" in every story about Noah, don't stand out. They're just being used as a complementary objects. Why don't give them larger portion? Since VFX is no longer an obstacle for movie maker these days, this is a question should be asked to writing department.

Well, there are some decent ideas, yes. Like loyalty issue or the scientific visualization of 7 Days of Creation. But since they (the movie maker) are not brave enough to bring Noah out of conservative view, those ideas are left unexplored.

After all, Noah is not being made with the intention of raising a thoughtful debate about religion, but instead it will raise a debate about Darren Aronofsky quality as a film maker.
