Boring and kind of ridiculous. A Disney melodrama with stupid new characters and no real development in the new ones. Bad CGI in some scenes. The only value here resides in the astounding art direction.

Oh boy. 2020’s Mulan was…eh. My family and I watched it on Sunday. It was decent and some parts where genuinely enjoyable. However, unfortunately, I think it has far more negatives going for it than positives I’m afraid (especially since myOh boy. 2020’s Mulan was…eh. My family and I watched it on Sunday. It was decent and some parts where genuinely enjoyable. However, unfortunately, I think it has far more negatives going for it than positives I’m afraid (especially since my 6-year-old was so excited to watch it, but wound up walking away in the first 10 minutes).

To start, this new "Mulan" is an entirely different story from the 1998 Disney animated classic or even the 6th Century Ballad of Mulan. Mulan was a heroic story of a young girl in Ancient China who, in order to bring honor and pride to her family, risked death and torture to keep her father safe. Taking her father's place in the war to save his life. She overcame obstacles that men, bigger and stronger then she could not. It never overshadowed or undermined men. It was a story of leadership, and putting the needs of others before your own. A story of doing the right thing, no matter the personal cost. In the end she tries to offer to her father the treasures she got from the emperor as gift to bring honor to their family only to find out that she herself was more precious to him than anything else. All while having a positive message about both sexes doing what was needed to be done. It’s a story beloved by people of all ages and backgrounds. 2020's Mulan is more of a reimagined historical documentary than an actual Disney live-action adaptation. It's lost the magic that made it Disney. No heartfelt positive message. No comedy. No light-hearted interactions. No songs. No animal sidekicks. No Bisexual Le Shang. It's just a story about a historical Chinese figure, turned Mary Sue, being exceedingly monotone, uptight, and strict throughout a war who will fulfill her duty and "bring honor to us all” (China) by being a one-woman wrecking ball. It's obvious the movie tries exceedingly hard to be “realistic” in multiple aspects of the film. However, this Mulan was born with incredible Chi and godly natural talent and abilities, was a complete badbutt from the start, the fact that there is magic and sorcery in the film, and unnatural acrobatics that would absolutely require assisted rigging say otherwise. Especially since the Green Screen and CGI in this film are painfully obvious. Other than that, the movie tends to be slow-moving with dry and stale interactions from the cast. There are many awkward interactions that feel out of place.

Lastly, I have to mention all of the negative publicity and acts behind this film and during production of it. Especially the human rights crimes that were taking place in Xinjiang were video footage of hundreds of Uighur prisoners were blindfolded, shackled, and shoved into busses headed for internment camps. The actress portraying Mulan, Yifei Liu, has been very public about siding against freedom and the people of Hong Kong by supporting the Hong Kong Police cracking down on protests. In the final credits of the film, Disney offers “special thanks” to eight government entities in Xinjiang where several “re-education” camps have been documented. The film also expresses thanks to the “Publicity Department of CPC Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomy Region Committee,” the Chinese Communist Party’s Propaganda Department in Xinjiang. Finally, just as a last show of toxicity surrounding this film, the film crew have allegedly filed a complaint regarding the films diversity issues and for being forced to take DNA tests to prove their "Asianness" because there have been complaints that the film is too "White" despite having an all-Asian cast. *Sighs*…Sorry, but Disney absolutely missed the mark. I don't think I'll be seeing this one again and I will be informing the rest of my family and friends about it. 2020’s Mulan looks like it’s been turned into a glorified propaganda piece for China. #Disney #WaltDisneyStudios #Mulan #BoycottMulan #Dishonor

But this is a film which many good people worked hard on. So if we ignore the fact...that an evil regime will benefit from this film and if we ignore the fact that the lead is infamous for her active support of the Hong Kong democracy crack down by mainland China and if we ignore that this film was actually filmed next to concentration camps and used slave labour only to actually thank the Chinese officials in charge of that well documented genocide etc...if we ignore all that ...what about the film? Well the film is not mulan as we know it. Its not much like the poem and it's even less like the cartoon. Its like ...star wars with the force called chi and some Chinese state propaganda thrown in for good measure. The Dragon is gone too. Apparently Chinese audiences didn't like it but western Americans loved it...So ofcourse China won. I guess the live action Shrek remake will also cut eddie Murphy and donkey Because apparently the chinese regime doesnt like donkeys...or winnie the pooh. The film is average as a film. Its no longer about coming of age or work hard and get good or anything to do with women's plight in China...which under the 1 child rule has been pretty bleak. Its more about being born the right type of Chinese person...So again very Xi JingPing rhetoric and reminiscence of Nazi Germany superman philosophy. Outside of that it looks lovely and sounds fine. Just very average overall and not really for kids. Not sure who this is for except China but apparently China isn't a fan due to the issues it has brought to light in our uncensored free press. In China there has been a media black out. So i found myself asking was it really worth it Disney ? No is the simple answer. This is a shameless greedy cash grab which has failed and cost reputations as well as lives. As a fan of mulan I'm gutted but in 2020...What more can we expect ? We should expect more than thanking Chinese nazis imo but then maybe I'm out of touch. C - Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Niki Caro simply destroyed the issues of the original Mulan movie. Attempting to rewrite the story was praiseworthy but man, there are some subjects and scenes you just can't miss. According to the huge feminism movement our societies are dealing with, the Mulan movie should have been the perfect place to transmit deep messages and to develop strong points of view. Instead of this we face a Mulan endowed with supernatural powers (the still unexplained Chi thing), hesitating to reveal them or not. The movie kind of try to address the problem of omnipresence of honour in men living in Medieval China but until the end the father of Mulan (who represents it) stands his ground and eventually never questions things the way they deeply are. Instead of this we receive a cold and superficial message about the importance of familiy. Nothing in the status of any woman in the movie changed from the beginning to the end. When all this thing ends you feel like you wasted your time for some childish random movie without any second lecture as an adult. The heroin is impossible to understand, the action scenes are jerky and unepic, there is an unexplained presece of some meaningless phenix, characters are just caricatures of themselves, and above everything feminity is a totally muted subject. A good point is that the landscapes are wonderful. Still a mess. Expand

I find it hard to imagine anyone who can relate to a magical person born with extraordinary unearthly talent far superior than their peers, whos main struggle is to just use their potential. Not learning to get better, not working or training, but to not hold back their physical prowess. This internal struggle of a demigod is sadly not even that well executed of a journey. if this being is so powerful why does another equally powerful shapeshifter need to sacrifice themselves against a measly arrow. makes no sense. donnie yen's character was also the only one who looked like they could actually fight. I was so excited and hopeful after seeing the trailer, but this lacks the spirit and emotion that was so integral to the animated version. ex the decision to take the place of her father was such a powerful moment in the original, but in the modern remake it just happens. so many things "just happen" for the sake of happening. This movie is virtually inferior in every aspect when compared to the og. watered down, "safe", and sad. Expand

Had some emotional moments, but this came over more like a cheesy cheap remake of an old tale rather than living up to the opportunity that Mulan could have provided to girls like it did for so many in the 90s kicking off the girl power movement.

The acting was terrible all around and horribly edited. If you want to sum up the movie in one scene, watch the emperor scene right after he gets saved and the ropes get undone by Mulan (close to the end).

So much potential, a real shame. I’ll stick with the classics.

CON: poor Chinese cultural understanding, action sequences draw from wuxia but fail to do it well, editing is choppy and fails to build any tension or emotional impact, dialogue feels translated directly from Chinese and is both simple and lacks complexity. This film feels ultimately like a potshot by Hollywood productions at a Chinese movie. They tried really hard to make this appealing to a Chinese movie goer and honestly, missed this mark completely. Disney seems to have missed the development of Chinese cinema in the last 20 years. Taste in 'costume dramas' has developed a lot and there are much higher standards in both the production and acting. Chinese cinema now has done every part of Mulan 2020 did, but far better. Removing the distinctly American parts of the original exposes the flaws of this movie and magnifies it to who are more familiar with the material. Despite the complaints about the cartoon Mulan, the cartoon Mulan is somehow far more genuine in it's representation by being true to the American Chinese experience. The irony is the remake poisons it's own Qi by not being true to itself in either the cultural origins or the Disney predecessor. Expand

Totally disappointed by the movie. It lacks the depth and emotional variety of the original, and comes up as dry and flat. Not anything special in the background music except a copy of the original songs. No emotional changes, no transitionTotally disappointed by the movie. It lacks the depth and emotional variety of the original, and comes up as dry and flat. Not anything special in the background music except a copy of the original songs. No emotional changes, no transition from village life to home atmosphere, no intensity. I can only excuse these decisions given that in the asian culture it is not polite to express intense emotions. However they could've found a balance. Mulan's personality has dramatically changed between the two movies, from cheerful, kind, courageous, determined and honest to silent, non expressive, a bit proud and too weak. In the original, she fought hard to get strong both physically and mentally. She never hid her character. In this version, she is struggling until she discovers her "chi" which magically boosts everything from her fighting skills to the team's full acceptance with almost no effort at all. It's cringe, cause you can't see a smooth/ logical transition in the soldiers' feelings towards her, they just go from "you brought shame upon your family" straight to "You are a warrior, you will lead us". There is no inner struggling, no overcoming of their prejudices, no final giving in to their gut and faith in her. It doesn't make sense that a cartoon covers all these aspects of human nature and the actual film just overrides them all. The actress is ok, although I don't see the impulsion, innocence, humility and kindness found in the original. They seem forced and don't flow naturally out of her. There is more than one scene that I've caught her being a bit too proud and snob about her acomplishments. There are many other things I would like to refer to, but these are the most obvious to me. Generally I expected a lot more. re. Expand

The original was full of life and spirit, while this film goes for a gritty and rather soulless approach, which is not what audiences in America asked for. Maybe Chinese audiences did (since this film was clearly made to pander to them), but even then from what I heard they loved the songs, Li Shang, and Mushu too, who are both absent in this film. The plot is so... so much worse.
They took as story about a woman working hard to achieve her goals while the whole world is against her, into a woman born with powers and everyone just treats her like she's special.
Why work hard when you can be born with magic right?
oh and don't expect to see fan favorites like Mushu. Apparently Disney wanted this to be a grim and boring movie with 0 comedy.
Stop doing live action remakes if you're just going to make sh** worse.

No joke this movie is so bad even pirates are staying away from it.

The Disneyfication ruins what could have been a great Kung Fu'esq movie
Decent cinematography and choreography watered down for what the execs think is the target demographic, of which I am not a part of.

In the original Mulan made the heroes journey of self-discovery as she develops and overcome the odds by determination, will power and working harder than anyone else. Here there is nothing as she is a Mary Sue or close to it. Even more they removed Mushu. You read that correctly. Mushu was a highlight of the original and it is beyond my imagination how they thought this could be a good idea or well received. They say they wanted appeal more to the Chinese audience. The characters are overall more diluted and inferior to the original. I don't blame the actors here because it is the fault of the script and decisions by the production company. This is also true for director Niki Caro. My respect for what she did here with this crippling limitations for character development and storytelling. I must also mention the CGI. It is also strangely unpolished and sticks out. The soundtrack is O.K. and fight scenes are good. The scenery and looks are a bit strange and it is hard to describe. A YouTube reviewer said it looked like a Bollywood movie where they took out everything that makes a Bollywood movie great (Singing, joy, emotions, etc.). Again this is strangely a fitting description. However my main summary would be that the movie was boring and you will often look on your **** Overall this is a movie that was ruined by corporate decisions and makes you to want to rewatch the original to remove the bad taste in your mouth. I am not sure if I would recognize it as remake of the original if I did not know it. I subtract 2 points for the cash grab on Disney+. Expand

The worst sin is that they added superhero chi because market survey says people want to be special and not earn things through hard work like in the original.
Really the sins are of three types:
PC stuff, like removing romance with superior officer
China appeasing
general poor writing (stupid villain: "we're the same". "no"
"yes") and lazy effects like removing the pole scene for mountain scene just for lack of stunt actor

Basically, the only reason this review has any points is that there is continuity in sense, and there is something resembling an instruction like the beginning middle, and end. Other than that I would recommend not watching this movie to anyone.
For starters, people who liked the original Mulan should go watch the original. If you like kung fu movies go watch something else.
By itself, this movie has a bunch of stuff that is bad. The main actress plays Mulan as flat and blank. Mulan's character has non-sensical motivations that aren't consistent. One of the villain's character's motivation doesn't make any sense. And then the film removed all the redeeming qualities from the original movie. Many of the elements of the movie are contradictory, and the supporting is forgettable.

My recommendation: watch the original movie or go watch kung fu movies, but don't waste your time on this movie.

I could understand most of these changes, but they just don't work. The whole war aspect was executed poorly, and Mulan's character development was non-existent. Instead of breaking through barriers and proving self-worth, this Mulan is supernatural kung fu, Avengers-style superhero - no struggle in overcoming yourself, bettering other men, or using clever strategies.
This movie is flawed on so many levels that I will not have enough space to describe it all. Only redeeming quality of this film is its cinematography - the film looks absolutely stunning.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. MILD SPOILERS:

This version of Mulan makes her a Mary Sue. She is born with a huge reservoir of chi, which makes her more powerful than everyone else. She didn't work for it, she didn't do anything to deserve it. She was just born with it. In the animation, she actually makes up for her lack of physical strength by outsmarting everyone else. Not here. Here, she's just a child prodigy. Just because she takes part in the training doesn't mean she needs it. She's actually suppressing her power, Elsa style.

Apart from that, the movie has glaring editing amateurish mistakes. One moment she's holding the sword, the next she's already armored up and striding out of her village, any emotional charge or dramatic tension is gone from this scene compared to the original animation. In another part, Mulan wants to find higher ground to fight the enemies, she mounts her horse, and the very next frame she's already behind a rock shooting arrows! It feels like the movie was butchered in the editing room.

They also stripped down any comic relief whatsoever. No Mushu, no jokes, even granny had to go. The movie takes itself too seriously to the point where it becomes dull. The actor playing Mulan has the acting range of a wood plank. The CGI is sometimes OK and sometimes hideous.

There's nothing epic about the fights like it was promised. We've seen wire-fu done a lot better in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and in House of Flying Daggers, and even in The Matrix. There are no epic scale battle scenes.

This movie is inferior to every other version of Mulan out there, including and especially to the animation of 1998.

It's not a terrible movie, mind you. But it's definitely NOT worth the 30 bucks. And I have no wish to watch it again. One time was more than enough. This movie is in fact scaled-down in every sense. There's magic (or chi) but it's not magical. The fights seem to be actually scaled down from the animation, fewer people, less epic, huge empty fields. Even the Imperial City has no citizens. Empty streets everywhere. We never get to connect with the other characters and we do not care for them. Mulan's village is smaller. The war camp is smaller. The pacing feels rushed. It's amazing that with all the songs taking up screen time and about 30 minutes less, the original amination felt a lot more fleshed out and had better pacing.

Disney sacrificed everything that made this movie special in order to appeal to the Chinese audience. I hope it pays out to them. This movie is just the latest disappointment in a series of unnecessary remakes. It is certainly not worth 30 dollars to watch.

Like some many others out there, I grew up watching the animated movie and still watch it from time to time. The message behind the story of Mulan is great, with hard work, perseverance, and never giving up, you can make a difference regardless of gender. In Mulan 2020, you basically have to be born with special powers and abilities. Gone are hard work, perseverance, and never giving up, and Jedi/Airbender powers are in. This is only one problem I have with this movie, but it is the biggest. They could not even get the message and meaning of the story of Mulan right. It is a shell of what could of been and should of been a better movie. Expand

The action was pretty bad and a bit overly exaggerated with quote from the director "we tried to avoid the wire as much as possible" and you can tell in the first 10 minutes all of it was wires.
Only reason why I give it a 2 is because it at least maintained a point A to point B story easy to follow up and something that was somewhat entertaining but overall it missed a lot of points.

I love the story, and I was very exciting for this PG-13 remake. Like all of the great remakes, I hoped it would tell the story in a new way that elevated aspects of the story the original couldn't.

Instead, Mulan (2020) strictly stays the same as the original, except it gets rid of everything that made the original exception. I disliked so much about this movie, I will break down each aspect, starting with the only two positive things I can say about the film.

Representation:
The fully Asian cast in this movie set in China is needed. The original, while a product of a different time and featuring many Asian voice actors, also commits the sin of appropriation. Good on Mulan (2020)!.

Scenery:
The scenery is breathtaking.

One neutral aspect of the movie is the music. I really liked the re-imagining of the classic Mulan songs, but this was hard to mess up because the original music was that strong.

Now for the bad stuff.

Story/characters:
With the exception of Mulan and her father, all other character arcs were written out of the movie. Mulan and her father are the only characters who grow at all. All other characters strictly serve as background. By comparison, the original had growth arcs for Mulan, Mulan's father, the commander, Mushu, and Mulan's three films. The original even acknowledges what happens when a character fails to grow and learn lessons in the form of the emperor's advisor. The lack of these secondary characters in Mulan (2020) HURT the film and story badly. There is barely any emotion in this film at all.

Acting:
Nearly every character in the original Mulan is played to perfection. The voice acting was incredible. I'm not sure what happened to the acting in Mulan (2020). Nearly everyone delivers every line wooden. Donnie Yen, who I love in his other films, is particularly guilty of this along with the emperor (Jet Li). It's almost like the actors were told not to show any emotion. Even the great Tzi Ma deadpans nearly every line. Action:
I'm admittedly not the biggest fan of floaty martial arts, which is a lot of the action in Mulan. But even that style was done poorly. Very rarely would the camera show two full combatants in a fight, focusing instead on close ups of individual movement, which made the action hard to track. Very little of the action looked real, except for when the masterful Donnie Yen was on screen. The action was boring and not of a caliber befitting a PG-13 movie. Every emotional scene from the first film that was again on screen was notably worse than the original.

Editing:
As mentioned above, the editing was lazy and confusing. Shots flew by too fast and failed to add to the story.

Directing: So many of these issues within the film should have been addressed by the director. Why not frame wider action sequences? Why not tell the actors to stop being so wooden (even worse if the director made the choice to have all the characters be emotionless on purpose). Comedy:
There is little to no humor to speak of in this movie.

This movie was painfully bad, and I had so much hope for it. Don't waste your time or your money; wait for it to come out on regular Disney+ if you absolutely have to see it.

Without a doubt the worst of the adaptations that have been made so far of Disney animated films.
Taking into account the potential of the original story, this is a real nonsense loaded with totally unnecessary messages since the plot and what it implies already highlights the courage and strength of Mulan.

I am not going to extend much more since the film has left me indifferent and the only thing that stands out could be the aesthetic that fulfills a correct soundtrack quite well.

A movie to forget that not even my ten-year-old niece liked.

This is not a bad movie if it were just another release like how Netflix does it. At $30, please DO NOT BUY IT!

The character build up is missing either because the main actress cannot act or China has forced Disney to cut out absolutely anything that remotely shows a Chinese person to appear weak. It's ok for the protagonist to show fear. Mulan's father says "there is no courage without fear" so where is her fear? Look at this movie's poster because that's her face even when death is in front of her. Even if Mulan was the only movie out this year, she still won't be nominated for best actress.

I continuously see obvious bots or some "I stand by Asians" nonsense posting how great this movie is. Look, this movie is no 10 out of 10 ok. You're saying this is the absolute best movie you have ever seen? It's certainly not a 1, but IT"S DEFINITELY NOT a 10. The 1 is justified because Disney set the price at $30. Say a In-N-Out Burger is good, but at $30, I'd give it a 1/10. That argument about how if you watch it with 3+ people, it's actually cheaper than the theaters. #1, don't lie, you're watching it by yourself #2. it's covid time, not many of us are having gatherings. #3, it's not the theaters.

Please support great movies. Don't give your hard earned money to Disney just because they are using someone with a certain skin color.

I was left unemotional and uninvested. The action reminds me of crouching tiger but at least you can enjoy that movie. If you still want to watch the movie I insist you watch a review first. Expand

I don't know why people like to eat this that the avengers will s**t, then Mulan. People will gobble up everything and ask for more (who put 10 for this movie)
Added unnecessary superpowers like a superman (how trivial), added a second villain to a woman in order not to offend "gender justice" (but she is ABSOLUTELY not superfluous here)
In addition, humor disappeared, a cricket, a dragon and three male characters (fat, long and stupid) disappeared, the love line disappeared.
Everything was cut out and the focus was only on Mulan.
a faceless movie about a miracle woman, okay if they made it interesting, but it's mediocre.
The saddest thing is that I knew it was going to be a bad movie, but I had hope. It is perceived as a cheap Indian movie. it is deceiving the audience who wanted to watch it because of their love for the original 1998 fairy tale.
this is also a fairy tale for 0+ but in 2020 it feels fake. I'm too lazy to write about the sins of this film. I'm crying. and after all, once upon a time Disney shot good cartoons ...

Instead: 'be born special, or be useless'. As a women in China I'd find this film rather discouraging than encouraging.

Introduction of Chi was probably the most stupid idea I encountered in movies ever. It's insane how absolutely no one in Disney thought 'Do we really want to make Mulan a second Superman'? That's NOT what old Mulan was about. If I wanted to get something like this I'd go and watch superheroes movies (new Mulan is considerably one, sadly).

About Mushu. I was told that new Mulan will focus more on realism. Instead it got even less realistic. Chi, Witches, wall-running enemies,VERY unrealistic fights. The last fight was so unrealistic and in fact terrible that I regret watching Mulan even more. It's the 'I'm the good guy so I beat the bad guy without any effort' kind of fight. It also amazes me how many critics seem to completely ignore what new Mulan did wrong. Plot (it's flattened old Mulan's plot, without any depth in it, also often unrealistic with tons of plot armour), acting (main character doesn't know what emotions are, or atleast it feels so),character development (or lack of it), visuals (often felt very unrealistic. For a 200 million $ budget it shouldn't be a thing). The only part I found decent/good was music. Maybe it was actually really good, but the rest of the film could have overshadowed it with its awfulness for me.

I'm usually rating films higher than most people do, but in this case I feel like Disney just spit in my face. They didn't even try to make this movie reasonable, it's a clear money grab. 'People see Mulan, they'll buy it'~~ probably someone in Disney.

I'm sad that I have to say that, but I'd rather watch 'The Great Wall' again over Mulan. New Mulan is probably the most forgettable film I;ve ever watched. I'd really like it to be a good movie, but it's just not.

2/10 because it actually had some decent parts. Still wouldn't recommend this to anyone though, especially for old Mulan fans.

A travesty in film form. Disney have absolutely perfected their method of taking their best work and reducing it to its worst possible version.

I cannot understand why they changed so much of it. Mulan is already a superhero. She is literally born perfect with magic abilities. No flaws, no problems, and no issues to deal with except for being too awesome as apparently being a superhero just isn't proper for a lady. There really is nothing to this character. She doesn't have to develop or confront any obstacles. She just becomes even more awesome.

The original Mulan was clumsy, free spirited, clever, loving, caring, and loyal to her family. She tried her best to be the daughter that her parents and society wanted her to be, even if it wasn't who she was. The scene in the Match Maker's ceremony gives makes us empathise with her. We know this isn't what she's meant for, but seeing her try and fail makes us want her to succeed in her inevitable adventure. In this abomination they had to invent a sister for her to be the clumsy one (can't have Mulan be not perfect), and when chaos erupts she breaks out the super powers and perfectly catches tea cups with grace, poise and elegance - exactly what the Match Maker is apparently wanting. But she fails because she's too awesome...how does that even make sense?

Anyway, the army comes along and conscripts her father. She talks about it at dinner and her father suddenly turns from this chill encouraging character into a table thumping "back in the kitchen, woman" dude...which makes no sense.

We all know what happens next. Solemn contemplation, a storm brews, lightning crashes, epic music, she takes her father's armour and sword, cuts her hair, and suits up and becomes....wait...no. We get a camera cut and it's done. THE BEST MOST SYMBOLIC, EPIC AND HARD HITTING SCENE IN THE ENTIRE FILM REDUCED TO A 2 SECOND CAMERA TRANSITION.

Honestly at that point it was obvious was we were in for. Do yourselves a favour, just watch the original. There is no life to this movie. There is no emotion, no empathy, no epic swell of satisfaction, no humour. It may be colourful and well shot but it's like sprinkling rainbow sprinkles on a grey cake made out of newspaper.

It's also hard to comment on the lead actress' acting, as I'm not convinced she did any. I felt more emotion in the sand scene between Anakin and Padme in the Star Wars prequels. Remember young girls and women, to be accepted as you are you must be born with superpowers and be perfect from your first breath. You must never fail, you must succeed and be the best at absolutely everything and never have to try. This is the message of this film.

How Disney turned an Empowered Chinese Icon into a Terrible Racist Take on a Magical Mary Sue

The Lessons of Mulan 2020:
1) You can only be special if you're born with it; intelligence, ingenuity and hard work are meaningless

2) Women can only excel if they are better at "man things" than men

4) Marginalized people only have value if they die for the status quo

5) Women only have value if they uphold male social and power structures

6) Orientals are stupid and ugly and don't know how to use make-up

7) Orientals don't know how to dress

8) Orientals don't know how to fight - no fight cinematographer

9) Orientals are patriarchal for no good reason

10) 4 screenwriters and NOT ONE OF THEM ASIAN

11) One History consultant - A WHITE GUY FROM ENGLAND

12) No Cultural Consultants listed on IMDB

Full Disclosure: I am 7/8 Chinese, 1/8 German.

Was expecting the story to be similar to the cartoon, but was disappointed with the direction they took Mulan. Mulan was interesting on how at first she had difficult keeping up, but over time earned the respect of her comrades.
