I don't know what it is, modern feminists or woke equity politics, but how do you do such a bad job with something so easy. The source material has already established a massive fan base, and the story is already written. It's so simple. You have to be a extremely bad writer/director/producer to make something so great so bad. It's also extremely unethical to take someone's life's work and change the source material with such disrespect. Then, just to make everything so much worse, you add on top of that fan baiting. Fan Baiting is done on purpose to not only stir up controversy for publicity but also serves as a barrier to real criticism and ensures that the show will succeed because if anyone has a different opinion, they will just be labeled as a "racist/sexist/transphobe/etc." and their opinion is ignored. It's a method to make everyone think you're virtuous when really you're just a horrible person spreading hate with anyone who has a different opinion than your own. You act like you're fighting fascism by spreading and using fascism. It's hypocrisy in action.… Expand

A Cash grab by Disney. Worse than Captain Marvel. It is essentially a Female empowerment propaganda into a movie, one that Anita Sarkeesian would get off from. Watch 1998 Mulan and something else, movie is not worth your time and money

A travesty in film form. Disney have absolutely perfected their method of taking their best work and reducing it to its worst possible version.

I cannot understand why they changed so much of it. Mulan is already a superhero. She isA travesty in film form. Disney have absolutely perfected their method of taking their best work and reducing it to its worst possible version.

I cannot understand why they changed so much of it. Mulan is already a superhero. She is literally born perfect with magic abilities. No flaws, no problems, and no issues to deal with except for being too awesome as apparently being a superhero just isn't proper for a lady. There really is nothing to this character. She doesn't have to develop or confront any obstacles. She just becomes even more awesome.

The original Mulan was clumsy, free spirited, clever, loving, caring, and loyal to her family. She tried her best to be the daughter that her parents and society wanted her to be, even if it wasn't who she was. The scene in the Match Maker's ceremony gives makes us empathise with her. We know this isn't what she's meant for, but seeing her try and fail makes us want her to succeed in her inevitable adventure. In this abomination they had to invent a sister for her to be the clumsy one (can't have Mulan be not perfect), and when chaos erupts she breaks out the super powers and perfectly catches tea cups with grace, poise and elegance - exactly what the Match Maker is apparently wanting. But she fails because she's too awesome...how does that even make sense?

Anyway, the army comes along and conscripts her father. She talks about it at dinner and her father suddenly turns from this chill encouraging character into a table thumping "back in the kitchen, woman" dude...which makes no sense.

We all know what happens next. Solemn contemplation, a storm brews, lightning crashes, epic music, she takes her father's armour and sword, cuts her hair, and suits up and becomes....wait...no. We get a camera cut and it's done. THE BEST MOST SYMBOLIC, EPIC AND HARD HITTING SCENE IN THE ENTIRE FILM REDUCED TO A 2 SECOND CAMERA TRANSITION.

Honestly at that point it was obvious was we were in for. Do yourselves a favour, just watch the original. There is no life to this movie. There is no emotion, no empathy, no epic swell of satisfaction, no humour. It may be colourful and well shot but it's like sprinkling rainbow sprinkles on a grey cake made out of newspaper.

It's also hard to comment on the lead actress' acting, as I'm not convinced she did any. I felt more emotion in the sand scene between Anakin and Padme in the Star Wars prequels. Remember young girls and women, to be accepted as you are you must be born with superpowers and be perfect from your first breath. You must never fail, you must succeed and be the best at absolutely everything and never have to try. This is the message of this film.… Expand

Yup, gave it a zero. I was so excited for my favourite Disney film to come to life. I knew there were going to be changes and some characters wouldn’t be there, but it went fully dark. I was actually board. More of a action film than anything.

There weren't any scenes that kept a kid captivated and intrigued for any amount of time. Albeit it being cheesy, epecially during the most pivotal battle between heroine and villan where a stupid Phoenix' wings are juxtaposed behind Mulan, this movie was just a terrible remake. My advise, NEVER included political or current social events in any Disney movie. People need relief from all the crazy in the world and Disney should be a "happy" place. This was not that. Terrible and a shame.… Expand

Other than that I would recommend not watching this movie to anyone.
For starters, people who liked the original Mulan should go watch the original. If you like kung fu movies go watch something else.
By itself, this movie has a bunch of stuff that is bad. The main actress plays Mulan as flat and blank. Mulan's character has non-sensical motivations that aren't consistent. One of the villain's character's motivation doesn't make any sense. And then the film removed all the redeeming qualities from the original movie. Many of the elements of the movie are contradictory, and the supporting is forgettable.

My recommendation: watch the original movie or go watch kung fu movies, but don't waste your time on this movie.… Expand

Laughingly bad. The director should be fired immediately and the movie placed in the dumpster. Horribly wooden acting spouting ridiculous cliches. CGI effects were not believable. Plot was bad.I was mad that I watched the whole mess.

One of the worst movies I’ve seen this year. The only parts worth watching were the action scenes but the story itself is poorly scripted and seems to have changed their antagonist from looking like Mongolians to Muslim. I find it hard to imagine anyone who can relate to a magical person born with extraordinary unearthly talent far superior than their peers, whos main struggle is to just use their potential. Not learning to get better, not working or training, but to not hold back their physical prowess. This internal struggle of a demigod is sadly not even that well executed of a journey. if this being is so powerful why does another equally powerful shapeshifter need to sacrifice themselves against a measly arrow. makes no sense. donnie yen's character was also the only one who looked like they could actually fight. I was so excited and hopeful after seeing the trailer, but this lacks the spirit and emotion that was so integral to the animated version. ex the decision to take the place of her father was such a powerful moment in the original, but in the modern remake it just happens. so many things "just happen" for the sake of happening. The removal of the key aspects that made the original great made this movie so much worse. Mulans cricket (lucky) and dragon (mushu) are no where to be found. She was given a sister in place of her pet dog (brother). Many of the events that happen don't make any sense, they were trying to force certain events into the movie that were in the original and couldn't figure out how to do it. She exposes her womanhood at the behest of a witch... I mean really. There was no witchcraft in the original, or in Chinese histories rendition of mulan… Expand

The other live remakes of the Disney films have at least mainly stayed true to the original story with minor changes or additions but the new Mulan is basically a different story all together. There’s virtually no humour in this version of which is a lot of what attracts the audience to the original Mulan film. They definitely shouldn’t have bothered remaking Mulan.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Niki Caro simply destroyed the issues of the original Mulan movie. Attempting to rewrite the story was praiseworthy but man, there are some subjects and scenes you just can't miss. According to the huge feminism movement our societies are dealing with, the Mulan movie should have been the perfect place to transmit deep messages and to develop strong points of view. Instead of this we face a Mulan endowed with supernatural powers (the still unexplained Chi thing), hesitating to reveal them or not. The movie kind of try to address the problem of omnipresence of honour in men living in Medieval China but until the end the father of Mulan (who represents it) stands his ground and eventually never questions things the way they deeply are. Instead of this we receive a cold and superficial message about the importance of familiy. Nothing in the status of any woman in the movie changed from the beginning to the end. When all this thing ends you feel like you wasted your time for some childish random movie without any second lecture as an adult. The heroin is impossible to understand, the action scenes are jerky and unepic, there is an unexplained presece of some meaningless phenix, characters are just caricatures of themselves, and above everything feminity is a totally muted subject. A good point is that the landscapes are wonderful. Still a mess.… Expand

It was so bad and made absolutely no sense. The dialogue was so clunky and just awful. The movie is all around inconsistent. It was so bad the suspense filled moments were laughable because it was so bad it was funny.

Mushu is not in this movie, rendering it completely unwatchable for me, the characters were very bland, and I felt the twist ending was very forced. The original did everything better. And I've maybe watched the original two times 20 years ago and I still couldn't help but be puzzled by the changes this movie made. Beautifully shot but that's the only thing this movie has going for it.The original did everything better. Mulan 2020 feels like it was made by 10 years old Marvel fan. Completely misses the point. No 'hard-work to get what you want' moral. Instead: 'be born special, or be useless'. Introduction of Chi was probably the most stupid idea I encountered in movies ever. It's insane how absolutely no one in Disney thought 'Do we really want to make Mulan a second Superman'? That's NOT what old Mulan was about. If I wanted to get something like this I'd go and watch superheroes movies (new Mulan is considerably one, sadly).

About Mushu. I was told that new Mulan will focus more on realism. Instead it got even less realistic. Chi, Witches, wall-running enemies,VERY unrealistic fights. The last fight was so unrealistic and in fact terrible that I regret watching Mulan even more. It's the 'I'm the good guy so I beat the bad guy without any effort' kind of fight. It also amazes me how many critics seem to completely ignore what new Mulan did wrong. Plot (it's flattened old Mulan's plot, without any depth in it, also often unrealistic with tons of plot armour), acting (main character doesn't know what emotions are, or atleast it feels so),character development (or lack of it), visuals (often felt very unrealistic. For a 200 million $ budget it shouldn't be a thing). The only part I found decent/good was music. Maybe it was actually really good, but the rest of the film could have overshadowed it with its awfulness for me.

I'm usually rating films higher than most people do, but in this case I feel like Disney just spit in my face. They didn't even try to make this movie reasonable, it's a clear money grab. 'People see Mulan, they'll buy it'~~ probably someone in Disney.

I'm sad that I have to say that, but I'd rather watch 'The Great Wall' again over Mulan. New Mulan is probably the most forgettable film I;ve ever watched. I'd really like it to be a good movie, but it's just not.

2/10 because it actually had some decent parts. Still wouldn't recommend this to anyone though, especially for old Mulan fans.… Expand

I've seen 6th-grade musicals with better performances. The new Mulan remake is a hollow, boring, lifeless, mess. It’s filled with plot holes and has zero character development or even any insight into any characters at all. The editing is awful, the action is boring, the script is comically bad. Watching the movie filled me with rage. This movie only exists to make money, there is no heart or soul in any of the directing, performances, and writing. Paying money to watch this movie is an ethically bad thing to do as you will be justifying more insulting and lifeless remakes in the future. Disney should be ashamed by this movie and by what their company has become. This movie is the worst disaster of 2020. DO NOT WATCH!… Expand

Added unnecessary black magic, unnecessary stunts and tricks like running vertivally up a 50 foot wall, didn't stay true to the storyline. There's a phoenix and no Mushu or Cricky Mulan already knows how to fight and do parkour since a child, they added a sister to the movie for no reason what so ever. I don't know why people like to eat this that the avengers will s**t, then Mulan. People will gobble up everything and ask for more (who put 10 for this movie)
Added unnecessary superpowers like a superman (how trivial), added a second villain to a woman in order not to offend "gender justice" (but she is ABSOLUTELY not superfluous here)
In addition, humor disappeared, a cricket, a dragon and three male characters (fat, long and stupid) disappeared, the love line disappeared.
Everything was cut out and the focus was only on Mulan.
a faceless movie about a miracle woman, okay if they made it interesting, but it's mediocre.
The saddest thing is that I knew it was going to be a bad movie, but I had hope. It is perceived as a cheap Indian movie. it is deceiving the audience who wanted to watch it because of their love for the original 1998 fairy tale.
this is also a fairy tale for 0+ but in 2020 it feels fake. I'm too lazy to write about the sins of this film. I'm crying. and after all, once upon a time Disney shot good cartoons ...… Expand

Well, they have given us a creepy mixture of Asian crap to us.

In conclusion, this is a film, that is a piece of prep school trash, cast with a bunch of ABC and post-Cultural-Revolution-Chinese.
Even The Last Airbender is better than this ****… Expand

The girl starts off perfect there is No flaw to overcome I feel like she was the same person she was from the beginning of the movie. some of the characters could have honestly been taken out of the movie and it would have not changed a thing. Also other characters I felt didn't know what they stood for. for example mulan's father encouraged her to train and be like the boys except for when she wanted to go to war. finally the whole movie was just hard to get into. which is a shame because this was one of my favorite movies growing up.It was visually pleasing that's the only reason I'm giving it a one but they could've have done so much better with this.… Expand

disney was said that they tried to make more realistic.
this is more senseless more original or 1998 movie 1. That main lead (mulan) have only one expressions in every scenes (maybe it my own opinion and i don't know you agree or not).

2 . They remove dragon and cricket for good reason

3. They add phoenix lol. phoenix was never belong to china they belong tp arabian story.

4 . Too much magical. in this movie mulan born with chi power. she defended everyone with 0% experience and without training . there is also a witch in movie .

5. She removed her armour and helmet in fort of enemies army and lead own army by flying and slow motion wall running.

None of the original songs.
Half the fun characters are missing. The plot is so... so much worse. They took as story about a woman working hard to achieve her goals while the whole world is against her, intoWorst live action reboot (so far).

Why work hard when you can be born with magic right?
oh and don't expect to see fan favorites like Mushu. Apparently Disney wanted this to be a grim and boring movie with 0 comedy.
Stop doing live action remakes if you're just going to make sh** worse.
