Definitely not a movie for the closed and lazy minded. Darry Aronofsky has proven without a doubt that he is capable of writing and directing a masterpiece, capturing a specific set of thematics in a unique and original way.

Even though I really like this movie, I will fully admit (hopefully this isn’t going to sound pretentious) that it is not for everybody. Aronofsky is not exactly known for making uplifting films and mother! is no exception. Aronofsky is not exactly known for making uplifting films and mother! is no exception. None of the characters are straight-up likable and the narrative deals with very disturbing subject manner (human cruelty, abusive relationships, environmentalism, the divine problem of evil).

This is arthouse horror to the max in which nothing presented through the lens of our protagonist should be taken as objective fact (think Eraserhead, Lost Highway or even 2014’s Babadook) and EVERYTHING is a metaphor meant to represent something else.

If you thought the third act of Black Swan was insane….well Aronofsky somehow manages to top even THAT with unexpected apocalyptic imagery, cannibalism and a very surreal cameo by a certain SNL alumni.

Obviously, there is a lot to un-pack with this film, but even without the multi-leveled allegorical narrative, there is a whole lot more artistic merit that oozes from the screen. Aronofsky keeps the camera very tight and claustrophobic, creating a suffocating atmosphere of unease. The cinematography alone does a great job in establishing the geography of the couple’s house and making it seem almost like another character.

And even the movie’s worst critics have to admit….the performances are incredible across the board. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem are absolutely fantastic in their roles, especially Lawrence in capturing the intense paranoia and agony that her character is going through due to the increasing amount of strange individuals that populate her husband’s house. Outside of the two main leads props should also be given to Michelle Pfeiffer; who delivers some really intense and un-nerving words towards Lawrence’s character throughout the story.

Whether you love it or hate it, mother! is a viewing experience that you will no sooner forget.… Expand

In first part of the movie I just saw a depiction of what I've felt recently when a friend of mine wouldn't leave my house in a quite hard moment for me, even if I repeatedly told her to do it. I felt again all the frustration, the struggle, all the anger that was not possible for me to pull out. That is what it feels not being heard because you're not finding a voice to be heard. I think the movie ALSO stresses the importance of finding that voice and make everyone hear it. And in my opinion Jennifer Lawrence did a sublime job to render those feelings. It's not, it's actually a story about a god who has to create but gets stuck and his mortal wife and child get caught in the wheels of his power leading to a self defeating, self fulfilling prophecy he cannot help but relive and unlike groundhog's day, his own power defeats himself in an eternal cycle but there's something transformative and beautiful and heartbreaking about the film. Come for the depth, but stay for the shock visuals and beautiful middle moments.… Expand

Wow this movie for me is hands down one of the best this year. I understand people with certain point of views will hate this, but for me this is outstanding. I understand people with certain point of views will hate this, but for me this is outstanding. First of all, the technicality and all are perfect. I mean that third act must be really hard to shoot. Darren is really ambitious in this project and it pays off. All the actors are amazing as well especially Jennifer Lawrence. This is probably her best performance in a movie. I really wanted her to get an Oscar for this, but too bad the movie itself was already divisive and will not get any Oscar noms. Darren's directing to focus on the mother and Jen's incredible acting are really a great combination to show how the mother character was feeling and makes us sympathize with her. The third act is probably one of the best scenes in a movie this year. For me, it's kind of straightforward and too fast-paced for some sequence but still works so well in delivering the message.… Expand

But the message wasn't confusing at all, the story (the implicit one) was there, and u can get it without the necessity of seeing the film again (that's something pretty good). Digamos puede ser que las criticas divididas es porque al parecer no tiene una clara historia. Pero esta película no esta hecha para entretener, sino para reflexionar. Cada uno, saca sus propias conclusiones.
Las actuaciones son excelentes, una de las mejores que he visto, sobre todo de Jennifer Lawrence y de Javier Bardem.
Su historia lo interpreto en como el hombre tienen a pensar que su obra puede cambiar el mundo. Pero solo sirve de empeorar, ya que la humanidad tiene distintos puntos de vista para hacer cosas malas, pero buenas también, aunque muy pocos. En otras palabras, tarde o temprano no servirá absolutamente nada. Ni menos si les hace daño a lo que mas quieres, en este caso su esposa.
Una de las mejores del año 2017, pero tristemente, es infravalorada por gente que quiere historias simples y fácil de explicar, que películas de calidad y complejas.
Les recomiendo mucho. OJO, no es fácil digerir.… Expand

mother! is a captivating story, but one not meant for a wider audience. It's understandable why viewers would find it repulsive and hideous, but behind it, there is a wonderful story of humanity and religion. Many of the unfavorable and counterproductive criticisms of "mother!" come from an uninterested and mediocre analysis, unjustified piques with the filmmaker or negative reaction to Paramount Pictures' elusive marketing, it's clear that it was not open enough— as they say —to roll the film out as it is, since although the studio still invests in the movie, promoted it into a disguise of frivolous thriller horror flick, An unimaginable surprise created in secret for a movie buff, however, for the most common spectator didn't work the experiment, for them it was as if they would sell a combination of "The Tree of Life" by Terrence Malick and "Pink Flamingos" by John Waters as a high-flying mixture between Mike Flanagan's "Hush" and "Devil's Due" by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with an added dose of morbidity, stupefaction and controversy. From a distance, "mother!" is a golden banquet in which food goes back and forth in a nonstop way, some plates seasoned with fresh polemic, ebullient narrative aggressiveness, ferocious screenwriting, intentional performing passion, dreamlike visual beauty and garnished with sour metaphors and sharp purports coming from the prodigious hands of our forward-looking chefs: Darren Aronofsky, Matthew Libatique, Andrew Weisblum, Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. Unfortunately, the most sumptuous feasts are considered as the black sheep either by its acerbic tastes, its rough appearances or a distorted word-of-mouth that oblige them to stay in the "underrated contemporary classics" area, each of them, still hot, are awaiting the arrival of a commensal with refined taste who finds that this exquisite plate isn't an insipid hotchpotch, it's, in addition to one of the few privileged to be able to boast of its ingredients and recipes, a breath of required fresh air to represent before our eyes the infamy that we throw to our home daily, originating top-notch performances, cinematography, photography, edition and direction on its way, rekindling the confidence in Hollywood, what a relief that there are still Aronofskies using cinema as a propagator of transformations, either in a naive or picaresque way, acrid or mellifluous, unsettling or reassuring; restorative ideas, thoughts and purposes. At this point, it's unlikely that a flick that panicked me and affected me equally, however, after two stunning showings, "mother!" is the glorious music-free work that has got it. I thank God that I'm not as those children who were traumatized by "IT" for life, I have the fortune to assert with conviction that my worst nightmare is not a clown wishing to devour me, a demon craving to possess me or some Freddy, Jason or Michael stalking to split me in two parts when I'm asleep, If someone suddenly asks me, I will shout to the four winds that I fear the most is to be captive — except in James Wan's terrifying/fascinating tales — in any of the parables of the American director, I fear to be a paranoid mathematician, a monomaniac fighter, an out-of-control fragile and repressed ballerina or a father attesting to the murder of his newborn son, we fear, with all our hearts, to be within "mother!" realistic utopia, simply, terrifies us.

Mother! works and kind of doesn't work at the same time. Is it an interesting film? Yes. Is it a film worth a rewatch or greater analysis? Probably not. The problem with the film is that once you attached significant bilbical motifs to it,Mother! works and kind of doesn't work at the same time. Is it an interesting film? Yes. Is it a film worth a rewatch or greater analysis? Probably not. The problem with the film is that once you attached significant bilbical motifs to it, the film especially in the final act falls flat and becomes nothing less than a metaphorical smorgasbord that doesn't necessarily tell you much except that Darren doesn't seem to like religion that awful not. That said, the first 2/3 thirds of the film work really well as this unsettling thriller with almost dream logic of a Lynchian film. I enjoyed these parts because as slow as it is, with a lack of much going on, the sense of uneasiness and mystery was an amazing mood. The general direction by Affronsky is second to none and is actually quite interesting to watch. The acting is top notch with Lawrence and Barden delivering well time performances.

That said, the film kind of falls apart in the final third with an explosive finale that mirrors something of a dystopian nightmare and that I think is the thesis of the film which kind of negates all the beautiful setting of the beginning. That said its still a good film if you want to just watch something original, however, the metaphorical analogies are very on the nose and not worth further examination.… Expand

Even when it is clearly manipulating it's working on some level. The eponymous Mother would be considered a thankless role for most actresses but Jennifer Lawrence isn't just any actress. She takes it and makes it her own. Without making a show of it she brings out the truth, she takes the audience with her, regardless of whether or not they want to - we just trust her. It's a brilliant performance that should not be overlooked for what helps make this artist's trip work.… Expand

This movie focuses on the symbolic meaning of religion, the nurturing of planet Earth, and how we as human beings coexist with nature. This movie is about the reflections of human creation, destruction, and the continuity of life. To give a brief summary of the characters and the plot of this film, we are given two main characters in this story, Mother and Him. Mother, obviously being a representation of mother Earth, is played by Jennifer Lawrence who gives an amazing performance. Her character focuses on the issue of trust. While everything she has done in her life has been about creating and prolonging life, she is the authority and the core player in this movie. Him, on the other hand, is a representation of God himself. He is worshipped by those below him and he is the influence of other people’s lives. Everyone will follow him and even go to certain extents to show their worthiness to him as a deity. As God, he wants to provide and care to everyone but finds no issue that there is ever a problem. While mother and Him play a significant role in the movie, this movie is a story of how actions have consequences and how purity can be corrupted. This movie is full of symbolic meaning and is a deep story of how we should not take advantage of what we have now. I give this movie a 4 out of 5.… Expand

All kinds of stuff happen for no apparent reason. It made me very uncomfortable. And then that twisted, mentally insane scene with the baby that gets killed and afterwords eaten, discusting. Jennifer, Javier and Ed were great in this movie, sad to see they went down with the twisted plot of the movie.… Expand

I would recommend this movie, only for those seeking something different. However, I was left disappointed though but maybe that's because of my familiar taste in thriller's/horror's. However, I was left disappointed though but maybe that's because of my familiar taste in thriller's/horror's. But I am always keen to see something new. It was... different.. but it lacks a few things with plots and so on and so forth. It was frustrating and very hard to watch. Mixed emotions through out the movie, but damn do you go on a rollercoaster while watching it! i'm leaving it with a 4 because it was a decent watch but theres nothing incredibly good about it im afraid. Worth a watch or two, there wasn't enough foreshadowing in the film. They kind of dropped a few things here and there with no explanation and it's as though the audience is trying a bit to hard to put the pieces together and then your left with multiple questions and potential endings as was i. My final problem is the sick ending of the baby? who else doesn't get that? because whatever message that was, it was sick and twisted and could've been avoided.… Expand

This movie was not a easy watch. There were many reasons. The pace was too bad and the running time was also not helping. The story and it's execution was also not that great. You don't get the purpose of the story till the very end except that it's a cycle which will go on forever.

I had no complaints about violence and some other uneasy scenes. I have seen worst violence than this one. The direction felt little bit weak. It was like direction asked them to do anything. The acting by the both leads were good but at some points you are unable to connect with them.

Movie could have been better with good direction, good execution and little bit better performance. Overall, it was a different experience watching it but I was hoping for more better of everything in this movie.… Expand

I mean, I understand what this movie tries to accomplish. And it's really not a bad movie when you see it for the second time, now understanding its meaning. The thing is that, if you don't understand it right away, it will make you suffer.I mean, I understand what this movie tries to accomplish. And it's really not a bad movie when you see it for the second time, now understanding its meaning. The thing is that, if you don't understand it right away, it will make you suffer. It will be a dreadful, chaotic experience that will make you furious.

When I saw it on theaters that's what I felt, then I googled it and after finally understanding, I saw it again and it was a very, VERY different experience. It's not for me to say what a movie can or can't be. All I can say is that I never want to see this kind of movie again. You either get it and have a wonderful time or doesn't get it and leaves angry and stressed. Getting it later won't help much, so you will only be satisfied after seeing it with your new knowledge. Getting this movie is not something obvious for many people, as it deals with a theme that it's only incorporated by some parts of society.

If you like this kind of win/lose risky experience, watch it. If not, don't. Even better: do it, but spoil yourself first. Not the ideal thing, but at least you won't risk feeling like my first time watching it.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother! Is a movie that depends on some other knowledge on external things that it's not really explained in the movie. I wouldn't call this exactly a mind bending movie, but more of a metaphorical movie, they extended a lot of metaphors to the whole creation and religious aspect of it is shown very well in all this, but the biggest flaw with this is that you can't really appreciate this throughout the movie, because it doesn't really blow your mind, just confuses you. The experience throughout the movie isn't very entertaining, just really crazy and boring, with a bit of stale acting and a bit of pace mix up in the movie.

Jennifer Lawrence was a great addition to this, no way it's her best performance but for her standards i think it was very solid and passionate.

The ending is great and explains everything you should know, and kinda makes you think about the movie in a whole new perspective, but that's the problem, you can just follow everything after the ending, so the experience during the movie isn't very favorable… Expand

When I watched Mother I couldn't look away, it was gripping, surreal and dreamlike, demented and glorious. But once the films climax happens it felt like id eaten a mouthful of sand. Theres no real substance to the film until you turn on your phone and look up the true meanings (NO SPOILERS). If they'd incorporated any of its true themes into the film I think this could have turned out a masterpiece. Overall Mother is a film that completely divides me but you must watch it yourself (even just for J-Laws performance) to decide if you are a lover or a hater.… Expand

I wouldn't dare to say is a bad film. But when pretentious takes over the director it just goes off the rails. It grabbed my attention at first and probably still does, but maybe not in a good way.

Although it’s shot great and has amazing actors in it, I couldn’t finish this one. Idk if this “artsy horror” just isn’t for me or something else but I could only make it halfway.

This is one surreal and intense movie. Just like nearly every other Aronofsky movie. Problem is it comes across as too self-indulgent. Disappointing.

Disturbing. Some scenes are a bit too disturbing. It is in the horror genre, correctly framed, but it is not scary, but rather disturbing, disgusting, frustrating. The symbolism of the film is fascinating... but I can't say that I realized it during the film, but only after reading the reviews. I would have seen the film differently if the symbolism had been more obvious.
