It cannot be horror as the trailer presented it but it's a clear criticism of the religion and the impact that humans have on the planet earth. We need to celebrate this kind of risk that only a few amount of directors are taking to elevate the cinema. Aronofsky is a director, who gave us brilliant films like requiem for a dream and black swan, and with mother! he doesn't disappoint. Lawrence performance is good (excellent choice of casting), all the members of the crew and all the elements involved in this movie, make it a masterpiece Expand

Yes, it's a criticism of religion. Yes, it went completely overboard, but goddamnit, this is a superb movie, from the theme to the acting to the camera shots and even the dialogue. Where it struggles is in pacing, but the mere fact that someone patched together this bunch of madness into such a good movie more than makes up for it. Go into the movie expecting disturbing visuals, but come out pondering what life on earth is. Expand

An underrated masterpiece. It is sad to see the public couldn't appreciate this piece a bit more. Jennifer's performance was indeed great and she should've earned a nomination for her work on the Golden Globes.

It was a captivating, dark, cynical story about love that truly left me unsettled and in awe for hours after I'd seen it. Jennifer Lawrence gives a strong performance in the leading role, and Aronofsky's direction puts us right in her shoes as we experience every step of her intense journey. It's sure to piss of a lot of casual filmgoers and it's not for the faint-hearted, but as someone who loves film and appreciates directors that try new things, Mother! is my favourite film of the year so far, followed by It Comes At Night and Dunkirk Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother is not a horror film it is a perfect film. There’s a eureka moment in this film that not many will understand and I expect low ratings. The low ratings are wrong. With that being said it is understandable to be confused by the movie. I was confused until the end and someone else told me. So stop reading and go see it if you haven’t. Watch the movie like a horror movie then be surprised. If you have seen it and want an answer to the question the movie is an allegory to Judeo-Christian beliefs. There is a horror in knowing that people believe in these stories. There is horror in the bleak ending whether it is meant to represent climate change, nukes, or a satanic hellfire type of apocalypse. There are of course many ways to interpret the biblical relationship to the movie with a Noah style flood, the body of christ, Adam, Eve, Kain, and Abel. But the layers of interpretation are what truly make the movie great even with its breaking of horror movie tropes like having more people making more anxiety unlike in most horror movies when being alone is meant to make you anxious. I am interested in seeing reviews from actual religious people because in some ways they would understand the connection better but perhaps are more likely to be offended. Expand

Maestro Aronofsky praised the work of ordinary people with a difficult fate, by showing the horror, without removing the horror. Here things are a little different. In "Requiem" Darren spoke on the topic of human dependence and weakness, which gradually kill them, "Black Swan" is about the fears and insecurities, dreams and horrors of human life, but "mother!" on the other.

It all starts quietly as always, there's a little family (Lawrence and Bardem), who lives in a huge house. He had long ago working on a new poem, She — settles house, which it restored after the fire that happened at her husband before they met. She works days, working on wall color, arrangement of furniture and other furnishing the home, not forgetting the husband, giving him all the affection and care which she has, but virtually unanswered. And all was well until on the threshold appeared a mysterious elderly physician, bringing with it a series of events, so phantasmagoric, shocking, how can the imagination of Aronofsky. And it allows you very, very much. Essentially the entire plot — from a quiet and relaxing start to an incredible and frightening finale — this is all one big parallel with the plot of the old Testament, the first part of the gospel. Nothing more about the plot I will not say, because then everyone will see his. I can only say that what I saw amazed me.

In the end we have another masterpiece and a living classic Aronofsky, impregnated with his personal unique style and worthy of his previous works. For me "mother!" — best film in 2017 at the time of writing the review. Bravo!

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother! is a film that has been subject to a lot of criticism. Films that are a big metaphor or carry over an allegory are always subject to polarizing reviews. I believe this to be in part by many lazy people passing off half witted ideas as "art", which in turn leads to true art being dumped on. Mother! is not a film for everyone, it really isn't. You will either love the film, or leave confused and resentful towards it. This film is a metaphor for the bible, and the destruction of Mother Earth. Jennifer Lawrence is Mother Earth, her husband is God, Harris is Adam and Pfeiffer is Eve, while their children are Cain and Abel. The glass piece Bardem holds in his office is symbolic of the "forbidden fruit", which 'Eve' ultimately is tempted by. More people flock at the home until a partygoer destroys a sink causing a leakage, indicated the flood that wiped out civilization. But after 'God' writes his new work, symbolic of the New Testament, more people retreat to the home. After a very disturbing and gruesome ending, the home is destroyed, just to be rebuilt again, showing the never ending cycle of the destruction of Earth. The ending is a doozy and as someone who enjoys horror, blood and guts - this will leave you emotionally shaken. I was borderline in tears by how utterly shocking it is. This is mainly a story about how we take and take from Earth, using up all its resources and hardly, or in some cases never, giving back to it. This film does a spectacular job of displaying not only the story of the Bible, but how we as a society are selfish, destructive and undeserving at times. This truly is a work of art and some people will never see it. Expand

The religious/mother nature allegory within the film was completely unexpected but welcomed with its beautiful execution. In a way, Mother! reminds me of the creepy, unsettling nature of Kubrick's 'The Shining', focusing on the characters and the environment in which they live as a means of building tension and suspense... An ecofeminist parable of incivility, violation, narcissism, sacrilege, greed, devastation, carnage and ruin. A unique and thorny masterpiece, that defies categorisation, and should wear its ‘F’ Cinemascore like a badge of honour. A year from now more people will like the movie than do today. In ten years there’ll be people denying they ever didn’t like it.

Oh, and Jennifer Lawrence gives a performance for the ages.

Overall, the film is an allegory knitted as a dream fever of compressed time, space, and mood. Sure, on the surface it is easy to place the movie into a horror head-trip film, but if one is able to look past all of cataclysm, one will see that Darren Aronofsky meant to make a movie of many layers. The allegory of “mother!” demonstrates that a movie can mean a whole lot without what it means meaning anything. As Aronofsky wrote, “It is a mad time to be alive,”. Adding issues like overpopulation, species extinction, the “schizophrenic” U.S. climate-change policy, ancient tribal disputes, the killing of baby dolphins, politics as sports, and our daily state of denial about all of the above. “From this primordial soup of angst and helplessness,” he wrote, “I woke up one morning and this movie poured out of me like a fever dream.” Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you don't believe in climate change, you'll hate this movie. If you're extremely religious (Christian/Catholic), you'll hate this movie. Otherwise, it's an extremely interesting commentary on religion and our world today. First, you have to understand that the movie is an allegory - essentially a metaphor using biblical references. Jennifer Lawrence's character is Mother Earth. Javier Bardem's character is God. Michelle Pfieffer & Ed Harris are Adam & Eve. All the people at the "party" at the end of the movie represent mankind. It's a story about how Mother Earth gave this beautiful "home" (Earth) to God and he ruined it with mankind. He invited all these people in who didn't appreciate Mother Earth, Earth itself, and all the hard work she put into making it beautiful. She is extremely disrespected by God's "guests" and then mankind ruins the Earth, so essentially climate change. And then the Earth dies and Mother Earth is just done with God and him being so selfish so she destroys Earth, but he never learns from his mistakes and keeps doing the same thing over and over. I went into the movie understanding it was an allegory for climate change & how terrible mankind is to our Earth, but that's it. I have a very basic understanding of the story of the bible and Adam & Eve and all that stuff. From there I understood where it went. I think if you truly get the allegory, you'll like the movie. Yes, it gets outrageous and hyperbolic at times, but that's to show how terrible mankind is to each other, our home, and our Mother (Earth). I think it was a great film and extremely thrilling. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I really enjoyed the commentary on our society today. Any movie that has societal undertones (and political since apparently climate change is political) is going to ruffle some feathers. I will admit the dead baby part was weird. And Kristen Wiig killing people still confuses me. But I think it worked well, and quite honestly scared the **** out of me when thinking about our earth and our existence. Expand

I was expecting something disturbing to enter the theater, but the surprise was something eminent. This is a subjective, metaphorical and extremely critical work. Many will come out angry, confused or astonished, as was my case. Lawrence who beholds us with his beauty most of the time, shows us a stifling reality not only in a disturbing drama, how the film is treated, but rather the very dilemma of being a woman. You get lost, distressed, trying to catch any loophole throughout the movie, to try to understand which way this work is going. When the spectator finally understands what this narrative is about, the will is to applaud standing. Religion, environmentalism, feminism and even politics, for "Mother" all these subjects can be contemplated. What is most incredible is that the more explicit the theme, related to religion and nature, the feminist and political critique is there, has room for all this in a sea of subjectivity and poetry. A true work of art. Expand

When I saw it, I had not heard the critiques or reviews and so went in knowing nothing. I think the movie is best if you don't know anything about it going in. It was marketed very differently than what it actual is. It is a film that should be taught in film classes because of the allusions to other works, such as the Bible. However, I disagree with the opinion that one needs to know a lot about the Bible to see the film. Another reason this is a great film is allows for multiple interpretations, as any great piece of art does. Anyone who says differently is limiting this piece of work and its potential. I interpret Javier Bardem to be the ID and Jennifer Lawrence to be the SuperEgo. Only through a compromise of both ID and SuperEgo as well as delving into the dark depths of our past (the boarded up room) are we able to birth meaningful art! Bravo to Aronofsky! Expand

Her abilities are enhancedI may be one of the few people who would argue that Jennifer Lawrence is still under-rated. In my opinion, very few actors or actresses can project emotion onto the audience like J-Law can without speaking a word. Her abilities are enhanced by the cinematography and score (or lack thereof). The frame is focused either on Lawrence’s face or over her shoulder for the majority of the movie. As we follow “mother” from room to room, around one corner to the next, watching her face contort, we feel the gravity of her situation, the emotions, the intensity, and the fear. The bold decision to eliminate any trace of a score from the movie leaves us feeling even more uneasy, looking for a hint of upbeat tones to tell us things will be ok, or at the least, foreboding strings to let us know something bad is going to happen. Mother! plays on our insecurities and fear of the unknown, only revealing its secrets to us in the most horrific and disturbing ways.

For me, this is one of the best movies of the year, and one of my personal favorites (full disclosure, I’m a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan). Without a doubt, this film will go down as one of the most controversial movies of all time, leaving viewers conflicted and emotionally drained. Many will leave the movie angry, confused, disturbed, and disgusted. Many will leave blown away by the cinematography, visuals, and amazing performance from Lawrence. And many, such as myself, will leave unsure of what they just witnessed, only to have it eat at their minds in the coming days and weeks until they find themselves brave enough to see it again, and again, and again, and again… Definitely not for everyone, but a must see for fans of Darren Aronofsky or those who just enjoy intense visceral emotions and movies that aren’t afraid to be disturbing and controversial. See it in theaters if possible, as the energy is suited for a big screen surrounded by others in the same situation. It works at home as well, so long as you make sure the room is dark and quiet and you can finish it in one sitting.

It focuses on the quiet abuse of marginalization faced by women in domestic roles, but this narrative has other parallels, which, given the surreal nature open a wealth of personal interpretation. This isn't because the film is pretentious or unclear, but because its story speaks to a basic human truth that manifests in more ways than one. This is not a popcorn horror flick. It's an upsetting, challenging movie, with shades of David Lynch's work. If you're looking to be spooked, go see IT (also a good film). What makes mother! stand out to be one of the most effed up films ever made is that this movie goes way deeper in the roots of philosophy, judgement, morality, and of course, social satire. In this film, we’re introduced to these characters, and these people have no names, they’re known as him, woman, man, and mother. They have no backstories at all, as the director probably wants us to find out what kind are the interpretations that he used when creating this madhouse of a film. Everything about this film is phenomenally well directed and this also includes the haunting performances, shaky cinematography, and a terrifying original score. mother! may not be for everybody, but this movie stands out to be one of the most horrifying films ever made and it’s an instant classic! "Baby?"

After giving it some thought, my mind has changed completely and how I admire the movie even more.

"mother!" is f**king nuts that by the end of it I was left speechless. What starts off as a slow burn thriller with sprinkle of mystery, turns into chaos of cruel humanity. Leaving a dark impression that left me shaking in shock which never happened before. Almost like I just witness murder.

The whole thing is one giant metaphor and is very clear of what it's trying to be. Despite the story being straight forward when you fully get a gasp of it, never did it come across pretentious, putting aside what people have said. The way it was told was so unique.

Darren Aronofsky brought what I call a 'disturbed honesty'. Something holy and yet so unholy. Dark and deep in the roots of humanity. Nothing this guy does feel like shock value, just a depressing portray of art.

I don't want to say anymore due to keeping things under wraps for people who know little about the film. The performances all around are fantastic and it's something that's gonna say with me for a long time.

To be honest, I've started to love the film even more as time to go on. Not for everyone, but with each thought, the more brilliant it becomes.

Lawrence and Bardem are magnificent, and the intimate cinematography further enhances the unfolding horror at the centre of the plot. Burns to comprehend the maternal, allegorical and perverse reality.

"Baby?", a powerful exclamation — which can be understood from any linguistic classification (denotative, interrogative, and affirmative) — made up of a pair of simple lexical items is the one with which superstar Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence opens and globalizes the leitmotif of an eccentric story that must be considered as a turbid orgy of shocks and varied properties camouflaged, metaphorically, by Darren Aronofsky, a filmmaker who spits out on our faces awkward truths without compassion, without consent, without prohibition. "mother!" is an outstanding diegeses on inexhaustible subjects that, anomalously, arrives with the stamp of a mega-American film studio; A motion picture that has more than enough justifications to become one of the most controversial, polarizing, ecstatic, avant-garde and imperative contemporary movie since "A Clockwork Orange" by Stanley Kubrick. Get ready, because Aronofsky has a lot to say. It's incredible what a man with anger towards the atrocious actions of his fellows can conjure up; in just one hundred and twenty hours, with the help of paper, pencil and a mind as prodigious and creative as richly perverse and engaging, without a doubt, no matter who gets hurt, Mr. Aronofsky, a native from Brooklyn, is one of the most — and limited — meticulous, fascinating, revolutionary and intense filmmakers in the Hollywood spectrum of today. Many of the unfavorable and counterproductive criticisms of "mother!" come from an uninterested and mediocre analysis, unjustified piques with the filmmaker or negative reaction to Paramount Pictures' elusive marketing, it's clear that it was not open enough— as they say —to roll the film out as it is, since although the studio still invests in the movie, promoted it into a disguise of frivolous thriller horror flick, An unimaginable surprise created in secret for a movie buff, however, for the most common spectator didn't work the experiment, for them it was as if they would sell a combination of "The Tree of Life" by Terrence Malick and "Pink Flamingos" by John Waters as a high-flying mixture between Mike Flanagan's "Hush" and "Devil's Due" by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, with an added dose of morbidity, stupefaction and controversy. From a distance, "mother!" is a golden banquet in which food goes back and forth in a nonstop way, some plates seasoned with fresh polemic, ebullient narrative aggressiveness, ferocious screenwriting, intentional performing passion, dreamlike visual beauty and garnished with sour metaphors and sharp purports coming from the prodigious hands of our forward-looking chefs: Darren Aronofsky, Matthew Libatique, Andrew Weisblum, Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer. Unfortunately, the most sumptuous feasts are considered as the black sheep either by its acerbic tastes, its rough appearances or a distorted word-of-mouth that oblige them to stay in the "underrated contemporary classics" area, each of them, still hot, are awaiting the arrival of a commensal with refined taste who finds that this exquisite plate isn't an insipid hotchpotch, it's, in addition to one of the few privileged to be able to boast of its ingredients and recipes, a breath of required fresh air to represent before our eyes the infamy that we throw to our home daily, originating top-notch performances, cinematography, photography, edition and direction on its way, rekindling the confidence in Hollywood, what a relief that there are still Aronofskies using cinema as a propagator of transformations, either in a naive or picaresque way, acrid or mellifluous, unsettling or reassuring; restorative ideas, thoughts and purposes. At this point, it's unlikely that a flick that panicked me and affected me equally, however, after two stunning showings, "mother!" is the glorious music-free work that has got it. I thank God that I'm not as those children who were traumatized by "IT" for life, I have the fortune to assert with conviction that my worst nightmare is not a clown wishing to devour me, a demon craving to possess me or some Freddy, Jason or Michael stalking to split me in two parts when I'm asleep, If someone suddenly asks me, I will shout to the four winds that I fear the most is to be captive — except in James Wan's terrifying/fascinating tales — in any of the parables of the American director, I fear to be a paranoid mathematician, a monomaniac fighter, an out-of-control fragile and repressed ballerina or a father attesting to the murder of his newborn son, we fear, with all our hearts, to be within "mother!" realistic utopia, simply, terrifies us.

Flammable, crackling, burning, resurrection, everything cyclical, everything critical.

I understand people with certain point of views will hate this, but for me this is outstanding. First of all, the technicality and all are perfect. I mean that third act must be really hard to shoot. Darren is really ambitious in this project and it pays off. All the actors are amazing as well especially Jennifer Lawrence. This is probably her best performance in a movie. I really wanted her to get an Oscar for this, but too bad the movie itself was already divisive and will not get any Oscar noms. Darren's directing to focus on the mother and Jen's incredible acting are really a great combination to show how the mother character was feeling and makes us sympathize with her. The third act is probably one of the best scenes in a movie this year. For me, it's kind of straightforward and too fast-paced for some sequence but still works so well in delivering the message. A screen adapation of the biblical story of Noah was the first bell that Aronofsky finally broke away from reality. If you expect from him a story like Black Swan or The Wrestler, it will shock you and make you think. Movie should not be missed!

Mother! (or, if texting, MOTHER, which abrogates the need for the exclamation...) is the pinnacle in the progression from Pi to Black Swan to the current tragic self-immolation. Indeed, Aronofsky has mastered his Cinema Surrealiste ofMother! (or, if texting, MOTHER, which abrogates the need for the exclamation...) is the pinnacle in the progression from Pi to Black Swan to the current tragic self-immolation. Indeed, Aronofsky has mastered his Cinema Surrealiste of depicting the subjective descent into nervous breakdown, be it from the wellspring of mathematical obsession; cutthroat competitivesness; or the desire we r all afflicted with: love. Here, Lawrence is the Mother, whose shrinking violet repression of social assertiveness builds up to a literally explosive performance. Bardem is the Father who deserves an exclamation for his performance as he once again erects a devilish artist/lover with his superb talent and volatile saucer eyes. Ed Harris is perhaps underutilized as he hacks through a solid performance, however Pfeiffer as his wife is in command of her menacing role that is both cynical and fun (indeed her character serves as a sort of Black Swan reflection to Lawrences perfect routine). And Kristen Wiig is a gem as the archetypal crass publicist who literally takes no prisoners. In the wake of all the other cameo performances on steroids, perhaps the only non-surreal scene has the real-life Gleeson Brothers fighting for family dominance (my $s on Domhnall, one of the finer young actors around....)

In short, Mother! is a claustrophobic whirlwind crescendo that will leave u ruminating on love, passion, obsession, possession and also how many house party guests to tolerate before the **** hits the fan...

HOT TAKES: Cmon, no Danzig on the soundtrack?!- this movie HAS to be the best fit for that anthem (utube it, millenials)
- I guess Lawrence is too young to remember the Rolling Stones "Mothers Little Helper", else she never would have flushed em- off her meds, her delusions propogate like Shutter Island in upstate NY
- Is it me or did this movie turn into Synedoche during the childbirth? - I havent been so confused by a frog in a movie since Magnolia
- O Christ...- i just found out thats what this movies about...

Aronofsky is not exactly known for making uplifting films and mother! is no exception. None of the characters are straight-up likable and the narrative deals with very disturbing subject manner (human cruelty, abusive relationships, environmentalism, the divine problem of evil).

This is arthouse horror to the max in which nothing presented through the lens of our protagonist should be taken as objective fact (think Eraserhead, Lost Highway or even 2014’s Babadook) and EVERYTHING is a metaphor meant to represent something else.

If you thought the third act of Black Swan was insane….well Aronofsky somehow manages to top even THAT with unexpected apocalyptic imagery, cannibalism and a very surreal cameo by a certain SNL alumni.

Obviously, there is a lot to un-pack with this film, but even without the multi-leveled allegorical narrative, there is a whole lot more artistic merit that oozes from the screen. Aronofsky keeps the camera very tight and claustrophobic, creating a suffocating atmosphere of unease. The cinematography alone does a great job in establishing the geography of the couple’s house and making it seem almost like another character.

And even the movie’s worst critics have to admit….the performances are incredible across the board. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem are absolutely fantastic in their roles, especially Lawrence in capturing the intense paranoia and agony that her character is going through due to the increasing amount of strange individuals that populate her husband’s house. Outside of the two main leads props should also be given to Michelle Pfeiffer; who delivers some really intense and un-nerving words towards Lawrence’s character throughout the story.

Whether you love it or hate it, mother! is a viewing experience that you will no sooner forget.

I felt again all the frustration, the struggle, all the anger that was not possible for me to pull out. That is what it feels not being heard because you're not finding a voice to be heard. I think the movie ALSO stresses the importance of finding that voice and make everyone hear it. And in my opinion Jennifer Lawrence did a sublime job to render those feelings. The movie overall was well made. Expand

It starts off slow, but still off-putting and awkward. It escalates gradually, as does the awkward tension you feel inside as the viewer. Every time I thought to myself, "this can't possibly get worse", the situation kept getting worse and worse. My blood pressure legitimately rose several times. The film kept outdoing itself in outlandishness and insanely stressful social chaos at every turn, until a breath-taking and truly shocking finale. This all might sound like a bad thing. Yes, I was not happy or comfortable watching Mother, but that is what the director intended. He wanted me to feel uncomfortable and stressed along with Jennifer Lawrence (who gave an absolutely outstanding performance), and he wanted me to feel like both the movie and I could explode at any second from frustration. Call it pretentious all you want just because you want to feel higher and mightier than others, but I found this movie to be both profoundly upsetting, and incredibly genius. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While most reviews consist of cheap shots at this movie about its lack of horror as it is classified as such, nobody seems to understand the true meaning behind why this movie was created and why it deserves in my opinion, such a high one. Although I can see many cannot comprehend it, for myself it was obvious the film is a comprehensive allegory for the bible, and poses as what I believe is an anti religion stance. While some say it is a chaotic movie with no direction, when relating scenarios to the bible, it all falls into place. "Him" is God, he creates beautiful work, and brings in worshippers and disciples. The two guests in the beginning are Adam and Eve. You can see as "God" directs them not to touch the glass figure, "Eve" does anyway and drops it. "God" banishes them from the study- or Eden - and the guests hurry out. Then, we can see two brothers - Cain and Able - fight for space in the will. This can be related to Cain's birthright, which he kills Able for and flees, just as the Eldest son kills his brother and flees. All throughout the film, each act corresponds with the biblical timeline and of course ends in Armageddon or the apocalypse, and "god" is all alone with his mediocre creation destroyed because of his need for admiration. This movie is made is a commentary on how if god is in fact real, his actions show that his love for worshippers is artificial, and the only genuine love he has is for the praise he gets. Expand

Aronofsky creates a stage-play box-film, with a few overarching themes, and lets it rip. This is about creationism and the bible, biology and evolution and art and its inherent function in a society ruled by both and neither simultaneously. Every scene grips, provokes and prods. Even when it is clearly manipulating it's working on some level. The eponymous Mother would be considered a thankless role for most actresses but Jennifer Lawrence isn't just any actress. She takes it and makes it her own. Without making a show of it she brings out the truth, she takes the audience with her, regardless of whether or not they want to - we just trust her. It's a brilliant performance that should not be overlooked for what helps make this artist's trip work. Expand

Expand

It is essentially two stories in one, held together by a Madonna-like Jennifer Lawrence who is forced to endure all this torment. My wife told me afterward that was exactly how she felt carried our child. I didn't know quite how to take it.

While there is a religious component to this film, it struck me more like Pygmalion, an artist creating his muse, through the fires of hell. Javier Bardem comes across as sinister from the start, despite his repeated attempts to console his young wife. The broad cast of characters, including the wonderfully delicious Michelle Pfeiffer, are diversions from what are the far more insidious aspects of this house. You know it is not going to end well when Jen readies the most dreadful room for her baby. You really have to wonder about her choice here, but then free will is something Aronofsky obviously doesn't believe in.

Anyone who takes this film seriously is missing the point. Aronofsky has purposely created a theatrical set of absurd trappings to take you on a wild ride you won't soon forget. There really isn't much here to figure out, it's emotional resonance Aronofsky is after, and why I think my wife so strongly identified with the film. It hit her to the core of what it is to want a beautiful house and a beautiful family but to have a man who is so self-absorbed in his own creation, in this case a poem, that he sees you as nothing more than a vessel, or as Pygmalion would have it a marble sculpture, in which to reflect his own personal dreams.

I can only hope I have had a chance to redeem myself. As for "Him" in the movie, I'll leave it to you to find out, as saying too much spoils the dark fun of the movie.

It is divisive due to the extremities Aronofsky takes the story to. It is an experience certainly not for the faint of heart, but I'd recommend anyone curious see it to make their own mind up. What can be critiqued objectively though is;

The cinematography is outstanding. Matthew Libatique does an excellent job creating a beautiful, thriving environment that slowly evolves through the course of the film. Consistently impressive camera set pieces, with a lot of choreography involved. Bardem and Lawrence put in an incredible performance. Everything you'd expect from the Oscar winning duo, as well as the rest of the star studded cast constantly make their way in and out of the film in rapid set pieces. Coll Anderson and Steve Baine did a brilliant job adding an important layer of intensity through impressive sound design. Much of the credit should be given to sound for providing the lucid nature of the environment in the house. All the visual effects from Protozoa were top notch as usual (see Black Swan and The Fountain), never really taking the FX to the extreme, always leaning on an aspect of magical realism. And of course, much credit has to be given to the incredible casting and stunt team for what must have been weeks and weeks of intimate and crowd choreography. Just as a production, it was really impressive to behold. So love the story, or hate it, but its fair to argue that its a very well made produced film that you certainly won't get bored watching. And an experience worth seeing at the theatre, if not at last to satisfy your own curiosity, but to also support truly original content being produced at a Hollywood level.

A couple's (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem) tranquil existence in their majestic home is tested when uninvited guests started arriving at the door.

It doesn’t matter if you liked the trailer or not, „mother!“ is so unlike a regular movie that a regular review couldn’t do it justice.

In fact, I wouldn’t even know how to write one about it. So I don’t, and try to jot down my most direct thoughts indeed.

What is „mother!“ exactly, you probably ask while watching writer-director Darren Aronofsky’s latest. Is it just an artsy (horror) movie? A political movie (some notice and center on its alleged pro-environment, anti-patriarchy or anti-immigrants message, for example)? A spiritual movie (biblical or otherwise)?

Based on the comments by the man himself, which I have read online, I get the feeling that it can be any and all of them, depending on what you are prepared to see.

But first and foremost it sure is artsy, so be prepared for 121 minute chaotic joyride which may look and feel like horror but is more about experience than belonging to a genre, or, indeed, telling clear coherent story.

Aronofsky’s works are usually difficult to summarize, and „mother!“ continues the tradition.

I happen to think that „mother!“ is best understood and appreciated as a story of act of creation, be it in the shape of biblical allegory or human being’s spiritual awakening (two versions of the same thing if you ask me).

In social dancing, there’s a saying that woman is the picture and the man is the frame. It’s probably due to my background as a social dancer, but „mother!“ worked for me using that lens exactly.

I saw that act of creation needs both, frame and picture (content). Both are important and can’t exist without each other, both are in some ways necessary to tear down the old and bring in the new. And both can be good or bad, depending on our viewpoint.

If, for some reason, you can’t quite appreciate „mother!“ as spiritual or artsy movie, there’s also other angles to consider, at least for movie lovers. Aronofsky’s latest echoes of different genres, directors and works.

For example, I was reminded of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s „Birdman“ and „The Revenant“, for how the camera is almost always up close and personal, in your face. Or „Tree of Life“ for general feeling and approach to storytelling. Or some southern gothic stuff, even Sofia Coppola’s „The Beguiled“. Or even Michael Haneke’s „Funny Games“, for setup and how it begins to evolve.

But beyond all the comparisions one can come up with, it’s fresh and original work on its own.

The long last chapter – I will call it the creation section – is especially outlandish and defying easy descriptions, for both what happens on screen and how it’s directed. It’s so chaotic, always changing and yet majestically orchestrated that I just can’t find words. Everything is in motion, everything is shattered. It’s cool.

I liked the actors too. Lawrence is in her top form, as somebody living through a personal nightmare, plus camera almost always up close and personal. Bardem stays on the background, he’s cool but not among the most interesting players here.

Then there are intriguing turns from Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, a long-lost American sweetheart from 1980-90’s. We also see Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, Kristen Wiig…

I like the comment of this one critic that „mother!“ is easy to respect and hard to like, but I managed to do both.

It’s too difficult to recommend, but do Aronofsky’s movie need recommending at all? Based on his earlier works, you already know whether you are intrigued to see it or not.
