The symbolism of the film is fascinating... but I can't say that I realized it during the film, but only after reading the reviews. I would have seen the film differently if the symbolism had been more obvious.

Actors played very well.

Darren Aronofsky is what happens when someone pitches terible movies but everyone is too scared to look uncool or admit they don't get it, so they all just make it anyway.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While most reviews consist of cheap shots at this movie about its lack of horror as it is classified as such, nobody seems to understand the true meaning behind why this movie was created and why it deserves in my opinion, such a high one. Although I can see many cannot comprehend it, for myself it was obvious the film is a comprehensive allegory for the bible, and poses as what I believe is an anti religion stance. While some say it is a chaotic movie with no direction, when relating scenarios to the bible, it all falls into place. "Him" is God, he creates beautiful work, and brings in worshippers and disciples. The two guests in the beginning are Adam and Eve. You can see as "God" directs them not to touch the glass figure, "Eve" does anyway and drops it. "God" banishes them from the study- or Eden - and the guests hurry out. Then, we can see two brothers - Cain and Able - fight for space in the will. This can be related to Cain's birthright, which he kills Able for and flees, just as the Eldest son kills his brother and flees. All throughout the film, each act corresponds with the biblical timeline and of course ends in Armageddon or the apocalypse, and "god" is all alone with his mediocre creation destroyed because of his need for admiration. This movie is made is a commentary on how if god is in fact real, his actions show that his love for worshippers is artificial, and the only genuine love he has is for the praise he gets. Expand

Either this man is psychologically amoral, or he is just plain immoral. What I mean by that is that it looks like this is a work of art "for the sake of art", which uses women to shock. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a relatively frenetic film, with lots of shaky camerawork, quite fast paced scenes of initially domesticity but then something goes wrong. Jennifer Lawrence I thought did quite well as the clearly anxious wife, very much sensing things are going to go badly wrong and having to deal with the situation she finds herself in. This is less of a jumpscare heavy sort of a horror film and more of a slightly spooky film with a heavy emphasis on symbols and how you interpret things. There is a fair bit of blood shown across some scenes, so be aware of that. There's also some hushed dialogue which was a bit hard to follow in full, which may frustrate some. I'd say its fairly atmospheric. The tone of voice of some of the male characters is definitely...frustrating and borderline creepy possibly. I imagine a lot of women could relate to the feeling of loss of control, loss of space and privacy that's portrayed in this film. Javier Bardem also gives a pretty decent performance in this claustrophobic film. It won't be a film that will appeal to all and I felt it seemed a bit ludicrous when pace wise it headed towards the last quarter or so but overall its relatively good for what it is, so I suppose I would recommend it, yes. The story and it's execution was also not that great. Yes, there were some biblical inspiration behind the story but it was not that effective. You don't get the purpose of the story till the very end except that it's a cycle which will go on forever.

I had no complaints about violence and some other uneasy scenes. I have seen worst violence than this one. The direction felt little bit weak. It was like direction asked them to do anything. The acting by the both leads were good but at some points you are unable to connect with them.

Movie could have been better with good direction, good execution and little bit better performance. Overall, it was a different experience watching it but I was hoping for more better of everything in this movie.

i would not think it's very bad as the acting compensated for the craziness and the mess has a lot of meaning to contemplate on. i thought it's more coherent than Tenet....
many things were thrown in including the sacrifice of the son? very disturbing but definitely the message got thro.
so many things comes to mind, rosemary baby, green zone war scene, pan's labyrinth....

Expand

"You never loved me. You only loved how I loved you." ---mother (Jennifer Lawrence) to Him (Javier Bardem)

Directed by Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan" and "Requiem for a Dream") "mother!" is possibly the darkest, most disturbing movie I have ever seen.

It is absolutely one of the most affecting.

Reviews have been mixed, to put it nicely. But I think the theme of "mother!" terrifies some people so much that they choose to be perplexed by it rather than allow themselves to even think about what Aronofsky is suggesting.

My take on the film is that it is about God, humans, and our respective relationships with creation and the creative process.

Humans are trying to create Heaven on Earth, and God is....well....God created our ability to create. "mother!" is about the futility of OUR attempts.

It is about nihilism.

It is the abyss, looking back at us.

Congratulations to Darren Aronofsky: He got it on film.

And yet it keeps you glued to the screen to find out what's going to happen next.
Great acting overall and the well the movie was shot really took your breath away because it gives you little to no space to breathe. That's something for many movie makers to learn.

The movie is a wide-open interpretation. There are many ways in which you can tackle this movie and experience it. One thing to mention is that this movie is NOT for everyone!

It starts off slow, but still off-putting and awkward. It escalates gradually, as does the awkward tension you feel inside as the viewer. Every time I thought to myself, "this can't possibly get worse", the situation kept getting worse and worse. My blood pressure legitimately rose several times. The film kept outdoing itself in outlandishness and insanely stressful social chaos at every turn, until a breath-taking and truly shocking finale. This all might sound like a bad thing. Yes, I was not happy or comfortable watching Mother, but that is what the director intended. He wanted me to feel uncomfortable and stressed along with Jennifer Lawrence (who gave an absolutely outstanding performance), and he wanted me to feel like both the movie and I could explode at any second from frustration. Call it pretentious all you want just because you want to feel higher and mightier than others, but I found this movie to be both profoundly upsetting, and incredibly genius. Expand

Worst. Houseguests. EVER.

I spent the majority of the movie in a state of perpetual confusion. It's a challenging piece of cinema and in more ways than one. The content can be downright horrifying and it in no way holds your hand when trying to decipher what all of it means. It proves that Darren Aronofsky is not just a filmmaker, but an artist. As problematic as mother! can be, I appreciate him for creating something so provocative.

The reason the film is so divisive is because it can be interpreted in a myriad of different ways. Everything is very symbolic. It's also an extremely harsh movie. It's graphic content is both the intelligent, mature work of a tortured soul and the profane temper tantrum of a petulant child. Pretentious, puerile, and poignant.

By the time the movie ended I had already changed my interpretation of it several times before forming my own conclusion. Of course I did end up looking up what the film is actually supposed to be about (I just had to know) and found out I was totally wrong. I had picked up on some of the symbolism, but walked away with something totally different for the final message. I don't feel discouraged by this though. I like that it spoke to me in it's own way. That's what makes it good. You may not enjoy mother!. Could end up walking away thinking it's nothing more than a bunch of pretentious, vulgar trash. But at least it will make you feel something and in a way that only art can.

However, I was left disappointed though but maybe that's because of my familiar taste in thriller's/horror's. But I am always keen to see something new. It was... different.. but it lacks a few things with plots and so on and so forth. It was frustrating and very hard to watch. Mixed emotions through out the movie, but damn do you go on a rollercoaster while watching it! i'm leaving it with a 4 because it was a decent watch but theres nothing incredibly good about it im afraid. Worth a watch or two, there wasn't enough foreshadowing in the film. They kind of dropped a few things here and there with no explanation and it's as though the audience is trying a bit to hard to put the pieces together and then your left with multiple questions and potential endings as was i. My final problem is the sick ending of the baby? who else doesn't get that? because whatever message that was, it was sick and twisted and could've been avoided. Expand

It uses people's fear of the unknown against them. The intruders have no logic or goal. They just come up with new ways to be terrible. What frustrated me about it were the numerous comparisons to different topics like the earth or the bible. Because even the writer had no definitive answer. Its just chaos and insanity for the sake of it. Expand

Everything is pageant-y. The FX are B-movie-ish....maybe C. The conflict grows & grows to ridiculous levels like a Seth Rogan penis joke bit that just won't end. This movie could've actually been done well, but it takes more than EVERY SINGLE SHOT MUST BE PICTURESQUE, ARTSY & PRETENTIOUS AS IT FOLLOWS JENNIFER LAWRENCE'S FACE THROUGH THE HOUSE, which is just distracting.........room to room to porch to room to room (repeat).

1 bit of hope : Kristen Wigg finally enters! (Wait, what? Yes, I know, I know..) Her 30 seconds of lines, total, were of course great. But that hope is lost as the movie only takes a further nosedive into, seriously (I think), Tarantino-grind-core ridiculous grotesque territory (see: From Dusk Till Dawn)

The movie's concept could've been cool....but this wasn't......like at all.

It is essentially two stories in one, held together by a Madonna-like Jennifer Lawrence who is forced to endure all this torment. My wife told me afterward that was exactly how she felt carried our child. I didn't know quite how to take it.

While there is a religious component to this film, it struck me more like Pygmalion, an artist creating his muse, through the fires of hell. Javier Bardem comes across as sinister from the start, despite his repeated attempts to console his young wife. The broad cast of characters, including the wonderfully delicious Michelle Pfeiffer, are diversions from what are the far more insidious aspects of this house. You know it is not going to end well when Jen readies the most dreadful room for her baby. You really have to wonder about her choice here, but then free will is something Aronofsky obviously doesn't believe in.

Anyone who takes this film seriously is missing the point. Aronofsky has purposely created a theatrical set of absurd trappings to take you on a wild ride you won't soon forget. There really isn't much here to figure out, it's emotional resonance Aronofsky is after, and why I think my wife so strongly identified with the film. It hit her to the core of what it is to want a beautiful house and a beautiful family but to have a man who is so self-absorbed in his own creation, in this case a poem, that he sees you as nothing more than a vessel, or as Pygmalion would have it a marble sculpture, in which to reflect his own personal dreams.

I can only hope I have had a chance to redeem myself. As for "Him" in the movie, I'll leave it to you to find out, as saying too much spoils the dark fun of the movie.

So, ok maybe they are trying to give multiple messages, some may say that it is good because it is not like other hollywood movies but at the end, no message is really given and at the end of the film it is just pure confusion.

Very disappointing, just another intellectual/ego masturbation.

And it makes no effort to be a story. A woman moves into a house with her husband, a house soon invaded by strangers, bohemian partiers including a naked couple getting intimate, looters, a swat team, terrorists who start assassinating people, and soldiers (just before the house comes under mortar fire). The woman is not the protagonist because she's utterly passive, takes no action - or only makes the most timid efforts to take action to get the strangers out of her house. She acts like no real person ever would. The whole thing justifies itself as a metaphor or series of metaphors - mixed metaphors I'd say - and symbolism. But while a movie can have metaphors and symbolism, if it is to succeed it still fundamentally needs to be a story on a literal level. There is no story here. Just pretentious nonsense. Expand

I felt again all the frustration, the struggle, all the anger that was not possible for me to pull out. That is what it feels not being heard because you're not finding a voice to be heard. I think the movie ALSO stresses the importance of finding that voice and make everyone hear it. And in my opinion Jennifer Lawrence did a sublime job to render those feelings. The movie overall was well made. Expand

Her abilities are enhancedI may be one of the few people who would argue that Jennifer Lawrence is still under-rated. In my opinion, very few actors or actresses can project emotion onto the audience like J-Law can without speaking a word. Her abilities are enhanced by the cinematography and score (or lack thereof). The frame is focused either on Lawrence’s face or over her shoulder for the majority of the movie. As we follow “mother” from room to room, around one corner to the next, watching her face contort, we feel the gravity of her situation, the emotions, the intensity, and the fear. The bold decision to eliminate any trace of a score from the movie leaves us feeling even more uneasy, looking for a hint of upbeat tones to tell us things will be ok, or at the least, foreboding strings to let us know something bad is going to happen. Mother! plays on our insecurities and fear of the unknown, only revealing its secrets to us in the most horrific and disturbing ways.

For me, this is one of the best movies of the year, and one of my personal favorites (full disclosure, I’m a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan). Without a doubt, this film will go down as one of the most controversial movies of all time, leaving viewers conflicted and emotionally drained. Many will leave the movie angry, confused, disturbed, and disgusted. Many will leave blown away by the cinematography, visuals, and amazing performance from Lawrence. And many, such as myself, will leave unsure of what they just witnessed, only to have it eat at their minds in the coming days and weeks until they find themselves brave enough to see it again, and again, and again, and again… Definitely not for everyone, but a must see for fans of Darren Aronofsky or those who just enjoy intense visceral emotions and movies that aren’t afraid to be disturbing and controversial. See it in theaters if possible, as the energy is suited for a big screen surrounded by others in the same situation. It works at home as well, so long as you make sure the room is dark and quiet and you can finish it in one sitting.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mother! Is a movie that depends on some other knowledge on external things that it's not really explained in the movie. I wouldn't call this exactly a mind bending movie, but more of a metaphorical movie, they extended a lot of metaphors to the whole creation and religious aspect of it is shown very well in all this, but the biggest flaw with this is that you can't really appreciate this throughout the movie, because it doesn't really blow your mind, just confuses you. The experience throughout the movie isn't very entertaining, just really crazy and boring, with a bit of stale acting and a bit of pace mix up in the movie.

Jennifer Lawrence was a great addition to this, no way it's her best performance but for her standards i think it was very solid and passionate.

The ending is great and explains everything you should know, and kinda makes you think about the movie in a whole new perspective, but that's the problem, you can just follow everything after the ending, so the experience during the movie isn't very favorable

When I watched Mother I couldn't look away, it was gripping, surreal and dreamlike, demented and glorious. But once the films climax happens it felt like id eaten a mouthful of sand. Theres no real substance to the film until you turn on your phone and look up the true meanings (NO SPOILERS).

Yes, it has shock value, and yes, it does have some moments of great, symbolic imagery, but ultimately this is a movie that does not have a plot, it wants to tell a story but does not care what the story is, it wants to cause shock, but does not try to do it by means of its ideas but by means of violence for violence's sake (and a big budget, and the heavy use of CGI). As such, this movie ultimately fails on all levels, except maybe trying to make a case about Aronofsky being a bold and imaginative person- which, in my opinion, is a question that should concern his friends and his agent, not the viewing public.
As far as I am concerned, there was no genius on display here. I saw pretentiousness, I saw lack of cohesion, and yes I saw some beautiful shots, which - however - relied mostly on CGI.
I consider this to be Aronofsky's weaker moment, a truly bad movie that does not know what it is and does not care to find out. Had this been an arthouse film with unknown actors and a 5k budget, I would recommend it for its bold style and genuinely scary moments, but primarily because this would be the movie of an unknown who is screaming for attention (look what imagery I created with the money I got by selling my car and an 8mm camera).
Aronofsky is not this position, however; nor are his star actors. As such, I think this movie is mostly the product of a narcissistic personality disorder and less of a work of art.

Aronofsky is not exactly known for making uplifting films and mother! is no exception. None of the characters are straight-up likable and the narrative deals with very disturbing subject manner (human cruelty, abusive relationships, environmentalism, the divine problem of evil).

This is arthouse horror to the max in which nothing presented through the lens of our protagonist should be taken as objective fact (think Eraserhead, Lost Highway or even 2014’s Babadook) and EVERYTHING is a metaphor meant to represent something else.

If you thought the third act of Black Swan was insane….well Aronofsky somehow manages to top even THAT with unexpected apocalyptic imagery, cannibalism and a very surreal cameo by a certain SNL alumni.

Obviously, there is a lot to un-pack with this film, but even without the multi-leveled allegorical narrative, there is a whole lot more artistic merit that oozes from the screen. Aronofsky keeps the camera very tight and claustrophobic, creating a suffocating atmosphere of unease. The cinematography alone does a great job in establishing the geography of the couple’s house and making it seem almost like another character.

And even the movie’s worst critics have to admit….the performances are incredible across the board. Both Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem are absolutely fantastic in their roles, especially Lawrence in capturing the intense paranoia and agony that her character is going through due to the increasing amount of strange individuals that populate her husband’s house. Outside of the two main leads props should also be given to Michelle Pfeiffer; who delivers some really intense and un-nerving words towards Lawrence’s character throughout the story.

Whether you love it or hate it, mother! is a viewing experience that you will no sooner forget.

Probably the hardest movie I had to review so far.
I am going to be straightforward, if you are not a real a cinematography fan you are not going to enjoy this movie in any way.
I read some reviews, watched the trailer once, and knew before jumping into this Darren Aronofsky movie that I was in for a 2 hour brain candy experience.
Most of the plot points and characters can be interpreted, not at first, but after re-thinking about the movie (for about an hour). There are still some mysteries that will probably never have a sure answer ever (probably only the producer knows the truth).
After watching this movie I had two ideas: the God and Mother Earth co-existence along with the appearance of Old Testament characters such as Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel, after which moving on the New Testament, sacrifice, chaotic events, war, poverty, destruction (humanities downfall) and finally rebirth (a life cycle event).
On the other hand there was a message (in my opinion) about the impossible balance between an artists' life and family which quickly falls into abyss (wanting them both). The continuous struggle of wanting to have everything and never being able to be pleased with what you have and the fact that it is never enough (for most celebrities).
All in all, a deep masterpiece that has its very strong cast and character development while also making the viewers think: WTF!? which is fair enough, but you knew what you were expecting before watching this movie.

What makes mother! stand out to be one of the most effed up films ever made is that this movie goes way deeper in the roots of philosophy, judgement, morality, and of course, social satire. In this film, we’re introduced to these characters, and these people have no names, they’re known as him, woman, man, and mother. They have no backstories at all, as the director probably wants us to find out what kind are the interpretations that he used when creating this madhouse of a film. Everything about this film is phenomenally well directed and this also includes the haunting performances, shaky cinematography, and a terrifying original score. mother! may not be for everybody, but this movie stands out to be one of the most horrifying films ever made and it’s an instant classic! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The problem with this movie is the trailer that Paramount puts out was selling it as a horror or thriller. The first 30 minutes built tension. After that you begin to get mad at the characters because you knew there was social commentary from 30 minutes to the second hour of the movie. The biblical themes are there with a man who is "God?" You have Ed Harris carrying around a picture of god with nowhere to go, but yet he invites his wife and kids over to the house. God accepts the family for who they are. The moment you see that you know someone is pushing their social commentary. What I thought was going to be horror/thriller was now an art house film with biblical theme. If the trailer even has a hint of biblical theme then I wouldn't of rented it. This is one of the films that gets so bad that even if you have alcohol in your system you will sober up quickly. Paramount was selling this as a horror / thriller so they can minimize their losses. If viewers knew this was an art house movie from the beginning then there would be less negative reviews. This movie could have been played by smaller names to save the studio some money. The acting from all the big names was very "canned ham". All the big names felt like they were themselves and not the biblical references who they were. By the time you reach the last 45 minutes of the film you are given visuals of all of God's worshippers. The good Christians and the people who put his name in vain, "ooooh". If you think you're going in for horror you will end up with Aranofsky's feelings on Christianity. Save your money horror fans there's a lot of other horror movies to watch and get a good buzz to. A couple's (Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem) tranquil existence in their majestic home is tested when uninvited guests started arriving at the door.

It doesn’t matter if you liked the trailer or not, „mother!“ is so unlike a regular movie that a regular review couldn’t do it justice.

In fact, I wouldn’t even know how to write one about it. So I don’t, and try to jot down my most direct thoughts indeed.

What is „mother!“ exactly, you probably ask while watching writer-director Darren Aronofsky’s latest. Is it just an artsy (horror) movie? A political movie (some notice and center on its alleged pro-environment, anti-patriarchy or anti-immigrants message, for example)? A spiritual movie (biblical or otherwise)?

Based on the comments by the man himself, which I have read online, I get the feeling that it can be any and all of them, depending on what you are prepared to see.

But first and foremost it sure is artsy, so be prepared for 121 minute chaotic joyride which may look and feel like horror but is more about experience than belonging to a genre, or, indeed, telling clear coherent story.

Aronofsky’s works are usually difficult to summarize, and „mother!“ continues the tradition.

I happen to think that „mother!“ is best understood and appreciated as a story of act of creation, be it in the shape of biblical allegory or human being’s spiritual awakening (two versions of the same thing if you ask me).

In social dancing, there’s a saying that woman is the picture and the man is the frame. It’s probably due to my background as a social dancer, but „mother!“ worked for me using that lens exactly.

I saw that act of creation needs both, frame and picture (content). Both are important and can’t exist without each other, both are in some ways necessary to tear down the old and bring in the new. And both can be good or bad, depending on our viewpoint.

If, for some reason, you can’t quite appreciate „mother!“ as spiritual or artsy movie, there’s also other angles to consider, at least for movie lovers. Aronofsky’s latest echoes of different genres, directors and works.

For example, I was reminded of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s „Birdman“ and „The Revenant“, for how the camera is almost always up close and personal, in your face. Or „Tree of Life“ for general feeling and approach to storytelling. Or some southern gothic stuff, even Sofia Coppola’s „The Beguiled“. Or even Michael Haneke’s „Funny Games“, for setup and how it begins to evolve.

But beyond all the comparisions one can come up with, it’s fresh and original work on its own.

The long last chapter – I will call it the creation section – is especially outlandish and defying easy descriptions, for both what happens on screen and how it’s directed. It’s so chaotic, always changing and yet majestically orchestrated that I just can’t find words. Everything is in motion, everything is shattered. It’s cool.

I liked the actors too. Lawrence is in her top form, as somebody living through a personal nightmare, plus camera almost always up close and personal. Bardem stays on the background, he’s cool but not among the most interesting players here.

Then there are intriguing turns from Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer, a long-lost American sweetheart from 1980-90’s. We also see Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, Kristen Wiig…

I like the comment of this one critic that „mother!“ is easy to respect and hard to like, but I managed to do both.

It’s too difficult to recommend, but do Aronofsky’s movie need recommending at all? Based on his earlier works, you already know whether you are intrigued to see it or not.
