Much of the picture plays like a frenetically paced version of the director's previous offering, "Frances Ha," with themes that the filmmaker has plumbed several times before (and that have now grown tiresome and stale). Most of all, though, the characters' incessant whining and rampant irresponsibility make one want to scream "Grow up already!" at the images flickering on the screen (though they probably wouldn't listen, even if they could hear us). Lola Kirke plays a freshman who isn't having an expectedly exciting college experience. She finds out that her mom is re-marrying and that her free-spirited new stepsister (Greta Gerwig) is living in Manhattan. Their quick connection is driven by Gerwig's character, who we're supposed to think is quirky, charming and funny (but oh so flawed). This is basically mumblecore hyped up with screwball comedy aspirations. Unfortunately, very little of it was quirky, charming or funny…just labored in it's attempts. There's lots of energy, but the lead duo isn't engaging, the supporting characters are uninteresting and the script doesn't amuse. Expand

There's something about Greta Gerwig. I was really intrigued by her in the first role I remember her in (that Ben Stiller movie) but then she's been underperforming ever since. Noah loves her, and that's great. But she can't carry the weight of a motion picture as the lead actress. Expand
