"Mistress America" is a thoroughly entertaining film with hilarious laughs, fascinating characters, and a great script. Another Noah Baumbach gem.

I really enjoyed watching 'Frances Ha' a couple years back, and that attracted me to this film. Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig really take it to a whole new level. The writing is so funny and sharp and interesting. It is sort of a 'teen' coming-of-age film, and I feel like it has a lot of the wit of John Hughes' best films. So many interesting and creative ideas come through in the dialog and editing.

I love that a lot of the cliched scenes that we've come to expect are cut to a minimum in favor of unique, funnier scenes and ideas. It really helps the film feel fresh and unique and kept me really engaged.

There's a little bit of overlap with Wes Anderson's films (I know him and Noah Baumbach work together a lot) in terms of character and dialog, but I really love the natural performances that Mr. Baumbach brings out of the actors. The film is shot very simply and beautifully, it feels slightly European. It really lets the script and actors shine.

I see that not everyone enjoyed the film as much as I did... I can only speak for myself. I really loved it.

After While We're Young released in March this year, Noah Baumbach is back with his best film ever, Mistress America. This movie was so amazing, and so quotable. Great acting jobs by Greta Gerwig and Lola Kirke, and such an amazing film overall.

Much of the picture plays like a frenetically paced version of the director's previous offering, "Frances Ha," with themes that the filmmaker has plumbed several times before (and that have now grown tiresome and stale). Most of all, though, the characters' incessant whining and rampant irresponsibility make one want to scream "Grow up already!" at the images flickering on the screen (though they probably wouldn't listen, even if they could hear us). How it has received such positive reviews is a mystery. I was very close to leaving halfway through but with the knowledge that it was less than 90mins long I stayed, that it isnt overly long is its main quality. The characters are unlikable or at best elicit indifference. The acting and interactions are unbelievable. At times I couldnt work out whether the intention of the acting & dialogue was to create some sort of homage of a farce stage show. What ever the intention the end result is a mess, fairly annoying and rarely funny. Avoid Expand

Lola Kirke plays a freshman who isn't having an expectedly exciting college experience. She finds out that her mom is re-marrying and that her free-spirited new stepsister (Greta Gerwig) is living in Manhattan. Their quick connection is driven by Gerwig's character, who we're supposed to think is quirky, charming and funny (but oh so flawed). This is basically mumblecore hyped up with screwball comedy aspirations. Unfortunately, very little of it was quirky, charming or funny…just labored in it's attempts. There's lots of energy, but the lead duo isn't engaging, the supporting characters are uninteresting and the script doesn't amuse. Expand

I know the answer to the first question as I always hope the movie will redeem itself before it is over. “Mistress America” doesn’t do that!

With a screenplay by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig that seems to use every word they know and saying nothing plus being directed by Baumback and starring Gerwig this seems to be a hate letter to New York. It shows New Yorkers as aimless, not knowing anything, being full of hot air, ideas that don’t go anywhere unless stolen and even the crazies aren’t individuals.

The story is simple, with a ridiculous setup, of 18 year old Tracy (Lola Kirke) seeking out her 30 year old sister-to-be Brooke (Greta Gerwig)--the former’s mother is going to marry the latter’s father--having come to New York to attend college to become a writer after finding out it wasn’t the way she thought it would be and is lonely. (If you think that is a long sentence you will go bonkers hearing some of the talk in the movie!)

Brooke is the do it all girl from running a spin class to being an interior decorator and many jobs in-between. Her latest project is to open “Mom’s” a combination restaurant, hair salon, convenience store, cooking classes, exercise center and more, basically being a community center, and a home away from home.

Naïve Tracy is taken over by city-wise Brooke who never really finishes a project and is jealous of those who do like all those around her. Tracy wants to be a writer so you should know where this is going, if it ever gets there.

The only one who made an impression on me from this (too large) cast was Lola Kirke who comes across more grounded than the others, seems more natural and is the only one with an arc that shows growth. Considering that Gerwig is a co-writer of the film it is surprising how negative, destructive and lethal the women are towards each other. Though she is a beautiful woman most of the lines either she or Baumbach put in Brooke’s mouth make her an ugly person.

“Mistress America” is all over the place, neither here nor there, and really doesn’t say anything with all its rapid, spit it out, get it said helter-skelter lines.

A sudden sparkling change in a moody life.

The second collaboration between the director and Greta Gerwig. I just love their works, together they write awesome story and create a cinematic magic. Kind of rare filmmakers, only a very few from the past to compare these two to them. It was another quirky comedy, especially if you liked 'Frances Ha' you would like this as well. I hope they would come for the third time to complete 'An Untalented Girl from NYC' trilogy.

It was not as good as the previous film, but nothing short of awesome entertainment. I am surprised a few of those who liked that movie did not favour it. I knew it would be a chick comedy, accordingly, I was not expecting beyond that. But like all the time when I decide to watch a movie, I wanted it to be a better entertainer than the one I saw in the earlier. That's what everyone do, it was like the sea tides, the rise and fall is inevitable. Some would like it and some won't, but to me it was a very good.

Unlike 'Frances Ha', here there are two lead characters, both are young adult women, but the entire narration was from one person's perspective. That is, a college freshman Tracy. How her life follows, especially after meeting a girl who's soon-to-be her step-sister. As in a new place and socially inept, she finds her way to be joyous and adventurous, meets some new people and makes them friends. But how long this unplanned pleasure remains with her and what are all changes makes to her rest of the life is the remaining movie.

"I am so impressed by you and so worried for you at the same time."

It was a simple and soft narration, but engaging characters and well paced with a chain of fine comedies. Apart from writing and direction, the supporting cast was the best feature. It was a tiny twist at the end, but extremely essential to break the steady sequence to bring a diversion. Since that part, I have been wondering about the conclusion, but the makeover was really excellent, I think it was touching yet as I expected.

This is Lola Kirke's major role I've seen. She was fantastic and I hope to see her in more films in the lead. It was one of the best on-screen chemistry between her and Greta. There were many beautiful lines spoken between these two, very memorable and quotable ones. With all these top quality, if one still don't like, then he must be bored of watching plenty of similar themes. But that should not be a reason to trash it, because that is his personal issue to deal who's dumping on this one is totally unfair.

This movie was unique, fun, touching, heartbreaking, likeable characters, filled with cheerful moments and overall one of the best recent films I have seen. It was more like a friendship movie on trust and commitment. The portrayal was at its best, an example of how a life can turn around in a matter of time. But how much more trustworthy is this sudden change and the best uses of it was the movie that told very nicely. I won't say it is a must see, but personally I feel that way.

I'm twice the age of Greta character and lived in NY at her age and this whole movie brought back that energy of being young-ish in NY. Also I love that this is a chick buddy flick. Movies have been aspiring to be that but this is the real deal. Greta is great (unsurprisingly) and co-star too, as young-ish and young, respectively. Everyone talks fast. Woody Allen-esque but much younger. Fast, funny and seems effortlessly ingratiating. Disclosure: I like most of Baumbach's films. They're not perfecto but even the flaws are above average. Expand

your tragedy is your armor..

Mistress America

For the most part of the time, one does wander that whether it is a movie or a special one-hour sitcom episode that is about to satisfy and clear each and every cliffhangers or lose thread of this hilarious tale. Mistress America works most of the time for its smooth and short runtime along with some of the smartest and newest idea which was to create a sitcom within a feature that is not only driven by raw natured mentality but also by its petty perspectives. Noah pulls it off again with this far fetched and as usual eerie script and maintains his statistics on being at the top when it comes to family drama along with the help of Greta as a writer-actor who surprisingly is flat out funny in each and every scene. Mistress America as said earlier is a two-part episode of a sitcom in which the makers is busy prepping up the characters for the audience in the first act just to explode the can of laughing gas in its second one which along with fast paced, short runtime, amusing but genuine characters and wizened concepts antes up the film than expected.

I liked the inner dialogue (narration) provided. I suppose it appealed to me as I felt I could relate to the main character, a quieter person. I could feel her discomfort in certain scenes. I liked the music played, which was mostly 80s-90s music, music of my generation, although the main characters say their in their 20s.

If your not keen on middle class twenty somethings talking about any number of things, going from one casual conversation to another, then this may well bore you. I don't tend to be too keen on that sort of film but this one did appeal to me regardless. If your unlikely to relate to, or be interested in, either of the main characters (the extroverted, out-spoken socialite Brooke and the quiet and unassuming Tracy) then this will likely not be for you but otherwise its worth a watch, so I'd recommend it on that basis.

While she dreams of joining a prestigious literary circle and falling in love with the nerd next door, she meets Brooke, the half-sister that her mother advised her to contact to survive the metropolis. Kidnapped by Brooke's enthusiasm and dynamism, Tracy changes pace and pace, getting involved in the life of the young woman who dreams, among other things, of opening a 'family' restaurant in Williamsburg. If Brooke needs money to carry out her project, Tracy needs Brooke to write the story of life. Friend and talkative muse, she offers Baby Tracy the story to gain access to the club. But reality is sometimes difficult to grasp by placing an abyss of interpretations. Interpretations to which Brooke is irreducibly resistant.
How do life and fiction fit together? Can they be manipulated to make a film or write a story?
This film represents the ideal and very successful continuation of the previous "While We're Young". Well done, Baumbach.
