Ryan Reynolds is one of the greatest screen presences in our generation. Mendelsohn deserves more leading roles as you could see from his display here. Think Rounders but Smarter.

As with all character studies and road movies, I am held back from truly loving Mississippi Grind. There is something about road movies I do not love and this one is no exception. However, as a look at gambling and addiction, Mississippi Grind has a major problem; how did this duo fund everything? It is largely left a mystery until it is convenient for it not to be. Regardless, Mississippi Grind is very well-acted from Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds, who are perfect for their roles and have great chemistry with one another. Overall, Mississippi Grind is a small, grounded road movie that is compelling and a great look at gambling, poker, and addiction, as well as a look into the lives of two compelling individuals. Ben Mendelsohn and Ryan Reynolds give very strong performances, and the gambling scenes are exciting. But the movie is pretty slow, and doesn't hold your attention for long. It's well-written and well-directed, and worth a watch.

I was never distracted by anything else in the cinema and was simply hooked on the compelling characters bought together with the comradeship of Reynolds and Mendelshon. It was exactly the right length and had an ending that was not in favour of greed. But in favour of self-redemption. Pure Cinematic Gold. One of the best of 2015. Expand

Ben Mendelsohn is wonderful in a role that shows you how far a seemingly nice guy will go to feed his addiction. My only flaw with the film is I felt the ending was safe when many in his situation feel tragic consequences. Overall this is a strong film and some of Ryan Reynolds best work. B+ Expand

Reynolds and Ben Mendelshon share a sense of a brilliant comradely with Reynold's charm seemingly complimenting Mendelshon's desperation to win back the money he owes. Excellent movie. Strikes the right tone between believable and exciting. Normally not a huge Reynolds fan but he crushes it as Curtis. An all-time gambling movie.

Mississippi Grind

The chemistry among the lead characters is the key that unlocks this feature into something colossal which was beyond its grasp if considered the mere premise. It isn't shot nicely and the tone of it too, isn't pleasing or seeks viewers' attention through it. Such technical aspects is where the feature lags behind where neither the background score nor the editing is in its favour. On terms of writing, the script is gripping and flows unflinchingly to the predictable outcome but there isn't enough crisp to breed the cinematic experience out of it. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck; the writer-director, surpasses their script on execution and connects within the first few minutes with the audience and doesn't let go for around 100 minutes. The performance is decent by both Ryan Gosling and Ben Mendelsohn but no such particular reason to be in awe with it. As much as simple the feature swifts away through its charm there are few heartbreaking moments especially when Ben visits his house and when Ryan converses with his partner. The structure is uneven and isn't divided into multiple acts like most of them but stays true to its tone throughout the course of it. Mississippi Grind has hard rubbing and fine crushing where truth is depicted in a harsh bold way and keeps the stakes at risk, all the time.
