This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Boilerplate garbage. Allow me to clarify. Tall, oversized ugly bad guy thugs working for neatly dressed, thin, ex-operative gone rogue villian (by the way, same plot as Bond Skyfall). Check. Bad guys with guns who can't hit a brick wall. Always miss. Check. Fake bullet sound effects like old western (Peeweeeerrrr!). Check. Mix in the usual crop of pointless and ridiculous impossible situations that make zero sense (except to create a tense moment). Check. Random vehicle chases. Check. Token sexy double agent girl. Check. Some sort of information micro-device. Check. Various clock-ticking events. Check. Dumb assassins who stand in front of large window in brightly lit room dressed in black point a gun at someone in a public opera house. Check. Angry boss who dissolves said group because of their ineptitude and shenanigans. Check. Who later is made to trust said organization after being proven wrong. Check. Various tranquilizer darts. Check. Random gadgets and gizmos, never explained that can penetrate any security checkpoint, door, etc. Check. Laptop and tablets that have control access to any plan or vortex water cooling system. Check. Main character who dies, but is brought back only to then have multiple vehicle chases. Check. I could go on. Expand

We are a long way from the slick and stylish first offering from Director Brian De Palma. Here, aside from some good stunt work and special effects; impressive cinematography and an extremely busy but effective score, all we are left with is a string of loud action set pieces most of which fail to engage. Ok, so none of it is to be taken very seriously and basically it’s a load of old tosh. However, should one really be clock watching and yawning this much? Tom Cruise is a good action hero and by now the part fits him like a hand in a glove, but I am less impressed with Simon Pegg’s comic turn as his side kick. Roll on September when hopefully all these dumb summer movies will be way behind us and we can finally get to grips with movies of real quality, class and substance. Expand

I agree with totally with Sesshomurai's review. Read it for a detailed critique. My additional problems are:

The humor in the opening and various other places in the film was so out of place for this type of action movie, that it gave me a bad flashback to when the James Bond films jumped the shark with snide remarks and fancy gadgets instead of a tight, gritty, strong screenplay.

The plot was stupid and predictable. Definitely the worst of this series. The movie was too long and just when I thought it was about to wrap up, they started a fourth and fifth act.

The villain was good until he started speaking. He had this kind of higher pitched voice and he whispered all his lines. Very annoying.

Not trying to pick on Cruise, I really like the guy; but his overly boyish haircut in parts of the flick, made him look like a 53 year old trying to look like a 17 year old. Very disconcerting. Hard to imagine him as a master spy. I also believe that Tom Cruise needed to lose about 10-15 lbs. in order to make some of his action sequences more believable. All in all, a very big disappointment.

I really can't believe how many good reviews this movie got. It was completely uninspiring, unoriginal, predictable, and truly played out. 93% on Rotten Tomatoes?? Not a chance!

Its like there was a checklist of action movie activities that they needed to hit. Cue motorcycle chase, cue car chase, cue resuscitation, cue savior of girl, cue break-into-heavily-and-impossibly-armed-building-and-steal-important-super-secret-documents, cue corny dumb jokes. Each scene more predictable than the last. It seems like they just stole the best scenes & ideas from the previous four movies and mashed them all together.

This is the worst instalment of the series to date.

I really enjoyed MI3 and MI4 but this film was lazy. I don't understand why the reviews are so high for it. I will compare this film to a bad Fast and Furious film. TheUnlike the witty tongue in cheek implausibility of theJames Bond movies this...my first exposure to Mission impossible..had be yawning and cringing at the lack of credibility. The loudness of the soundtrack kept me from going to sleep. The story line was childishly portraying America as the heroes.the only part that held my interest was the very beginning. The much acclaimed motor bike chase was badly filmed and edited. Emma ferguson was so obviously not riding and the cars and trucks on the straight stretches of highway so obviously stationary presumably to enable the motor bike manoeuvres. Expand

More then being sequel of MI, it looked like sequel to Jack Reacher. I Still can't understand why there was no background score in high thrilled sequences. I Still can't understand why there was no background score in high thrilled sequences. Too much forward and backward story was confusing. Brad Bird did a great job assembling a team for IMF but McQuarrie put half of it to rest and only Job Banji would do was to show his bad comic timing skills. When the things were apparent from the start there was nothing to be found only to catch. And in the end, such a strong and powerful organization ends up grounded by catching only one solicitor. While their goal still remains confusing. Expand

I mean, if you want to leave it on while you clean house, you probably will peek in at some action sequences, chases, or fights. But you'll probably quit paying attention and won't notice it till it's over and the screen saver comes on. Not worth the time. If you want to see Jeremy Renner in a better movie, check him out in the Bourne movie he did. Talented cast wasted. Expand
