This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I agree with the negative reviews in that the characters are not very fleshed out, but that is so common with movies and horror movies especially that I can't see why that's something to hold against this movie in particular. TLDR: SPOILERS!!

In the end, it is the originality of the setting and cinematography and some of the acting that got me to 7 on this. I am glad I saw it. It stuck in my head, and I don't regret spending the time to watch it. But it would have been WAYYYYYYY BETTTTTERR!!! if the main characters were newlyweds and maybe expecting a baby and she found out that the guy had slept with her sister before she killed herself or something and he regretted it and loved the girlfriend but it was too late because she was so traumatized by her sister's suicide and murder of their parents that she condemns him anyway and maybe runs into the fire herself or something. Instead, it is like "Guy I've been dating for three months is sort of self-centered..." BFD. Then it is neither deserved nor a surprise nor ambiguous when he is killed. It's just uninteresting.

MAIN REVIEW: The boyfriend character who gets burned up at the end is always a problem. How do you make him bad enough to sort of deserve it, but not so bad that it is absurd that his girlfriend and friends event want to be around him? Or do you make him "good" so it is a shocking twist? This movie fails there. He just is not a great guy. But he's also not a terrible guy. He's having trouble dealing with a girlfriend with *MASSIVE* trauma issues? Understandable. He kind of cribs his friend's idea to do a thesis on this community? Also skeevy, but not too high on the scale. And he "only" cheats on his GF under a huge amount of drug-induced duress bordering on outright threats, kidnapping and extortion. So all in all, it doesn't pack much of a satisfaction in him getting fried in the end. But he's also a crummy enough guy that you are not shocked at all. So it's not a twist either. Tough job to do but they didn't do it.

The biggest problem I have with the BG/GF dynamic here is common to many modern films: You're not married! You are just dating! You haven't been dating that long! So why do you care so much?! So why should we?! Why do you go on this trip together in the first place? Why do you become homicidal when he (only technically) cheats on you? OK, I am old fashioned I guess, but this was a problem as long ago as the show 'Friends': You can't really deal with anything heavy like "love," so it was just "feelings." Here you can't feed the patriarchy by having these two be newlyweds. Fine. But they are shown from the beginning to be in a weak, dicey relationship that doesn't seem to have been going on that long. So it is not enough to justify the distress, decisions, and ending of the BF and GF. You just kind of want to say, "Who cares?!" Where are the stakes? They are not even living together. No stakes because they don't have anything invested in their relationship, so why should we??

The other characters are stock friends. Fine. It is tough to get post-grad smarties like this to somehow stay in this absolute loony commune absent physical force, and they do an OK job of that. BF and the other anthropology student stay because they want to do their theses, GF stays to be with BF, two randos try to leave and get killed, and one kid stays to get laid then gets murdered. All in all, just when I was about to roll my eyes about them not just leaving, the movie did an OK job of getting them to stay long enough for their own reasons. But still there were some red flags at the end when the BF and GF should have said F this and ran off. But then they probably would have been smashed with the big hammer or kept by some other force, so fine. And they had lots of perfect psychadelic drugs to make it somewhat believable that they might stay.

I still liked this movie a lot because of the cool, "What if Viking-era pagan beliefs survived or were reborn?" idea. It was beautiful to watch. The acting was good. The idea had just enough twists and originality.

Totally worth watching, but because of the lack of any investment in the final two surviving characters (by the audience or between themselves) you just don't care that much after. And the ending is fairly predictable.

Apparently, Ari Aster wrote Midsommar after going through a bad break-up. ...Can someone please check on him and make sure he's okay? Because this is some of the most disturbing and gory film-making I have ever seen in my life.

This movie does have some incredible cinematography and art design. Seriously, every frame is bursting off the screen. Even the gore is superbly executed. If you don't like gore, this will turn you off.

Midsommar is a very slow burning film. The story really takes its time to get weird and disturbing. Once it reaches peak horror, it will stick with you. That being said, I do think it's less accessible than even Hereditary, Aster's last movie. However, if you are a die-hard horror fan like I am, or if you really like weird horror or gore-or, then you will enjoy Midsommar.

This movie grew on me as I had time to chew it over. I was probably at a 5 right after. One day later I'm at a seven. Who knows, by tomorrow I might be higher still.

It is another home run by Aster with his unique filmmaking style, the misinterpreted celebration is the key to this film.

Midsommar

Aster makes horror real. While other filmmakers, other films are desperately trying to fantasize about this beloved concept, Aster is never into that make-believe attitude while dealing with his content. It could be a documentary and you wouldn't know the difference. And this concept, the bizarrely head spinning idea that the writer and director, Ari Aster has dug out is something he values above all. And you can see that easily on both of his films. Even in his debut film Hereditary, Aster keeps the philosophized idea of his above any other character or the world they live in. And if you think about it, THAT is scary.

For an audience responds to characters. They are constantly looking for an image of themselves within these array of characters listed in the film. They are ready to give in, on even the least amount of empathy oozed by any of those bodies floating around. Aster understands this completely and hence hands over that box of chocolate within the first act of the film. Then, the sadistic language of his starts running soon after you get comfortable.

For this host that you are investing in, the box of chocolate that you have just received, is never given any opportunity to redeem itself. You are left not only dissatisfied but vulnerable. The movie experience that you went out to have is what actually is terrifying, now. All you can do is just experience it. And that very dissatisfaction is satisfying. He brings alive the horror genre that he claims. No 3d, no special effects, pure visual storytelling at its best. Aster also makes annoyance his ammo to torture us. Little things like a cry or a scream, sung in unison or in high pitches, in the middle of the day, in Midsommar, contradicting the environment, the behavior is rude and non-social, not particularly odd.

Poorly advertised as something it isn't; will frustrate and impress in equal measure

Much like his debut, Hereditary (2018), writer/director Ari Aster's Midsommar has been well received by critics but not so much by audiences. And, really, it's not hard to see why; both were disingenuously promoted as horrors, drawing in audiences who were disappointed they didn't get what they were expecting. Whereas Hereditary was a study of grief, it did have horror elements, but in Midsommar, there's little resembling a horror trope. Whereas Hereditary dealt with emotional pain, Midsommar is more interested in what happens when the initial pain of bereavement starts to wear off. And whilst the characters are underwritten, and it's painfully predictable, it's beautifully crafted, brilliantly shot in glaring sunlight, and vastly ambitious. And much like Us (2019), it avoids the sophomore slump without knocking it out of the park.

When Dani (Florence Pugh) suffers an unimaginable tragedy, she turns for support to her boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor), unaware that he finds her overly needy, and wants to break up. The following summer, she learns that he and his friends Josh (William Jackson Harper) and Mark (Will Poulter) have been invited by Swedish student Pelle (Vilhelm Blomgren) to his ancestral pagan commune in Hårga, where a midsummer celebration that occurs once every ninety years will be taking place. Dani joins the group, but it doesn't take long to learn that something isn't right in the commune.

According to Aster, Midsommar is really a breakup movie, and in this sense, Christian is a classic manipulator; after Dani learns about the trip, she's upset that he didn't tell her, but he manipulates her into apologising to him. The core of the story is Dani slowly coming to realise that he isn't the man she thought he was, and in this sense, it's primarily an allegory for the process of a young woman's emotional awakening. Indeed, one can read the character names as symbolic; Dani Ardor is denied love, and in the paganism of the commune, she's offered something she can't get from a self-serving Christian(ity).

Aesthetically, the film looks terrific. Whereas the US scenes are dark and confined, taking place in small poorly lit rooms with the characters wearing drab costumes, once the film shifts to Sweden, Henrik Svensson's production design emphasises an open-plan vastness, Pawel Pogorzelski's cinematography drenches everything in glaring sunlight, and Andrea Flesch's costume design focuses on brilliant white.

There are also some nice individual moments. For example, the choral singing with which the film begins is harshly interrupted by a telephone ringing, suggesting the clash between tradition and modernity; a superb single-take shot takes Dani from heading to her apartment bathroom to entering the bathroom of an airplane; a high altitude shot showing a car travelling along a country road is imbued with malevolent undercurrent as the car passes under the camera, and the camera follows it by turning downwards, ending up upside-down.

As for the acting, Midsommar belongs entirely to Pugh. For most of the film, she's on the precipice of a nervous breakdown, with her performance redolent of Shelley Duval in The Shining (1980). This is easily her best and most layered performance thus far, especially the gamut of contradictory emotions she runs in the last 20 minutes. As Christian, Reynor does do a decent job of getting the audience to loathe his passive-aggressive persona. Poulter plays Mark as the kind of ignorant sex-crazed loudmouth that seems to only exist in the movies. As Josh, Harper barely registers, whilst Blomgren's Pelle is so obviously untrustworthy that it pushes suspension of disbelief to breaking point.

As this might suggest, one of the biggest problems is the underwritten characters. Another issue is that even aside from Pelle, the film pushes suspension of disbelief too far. There are multiple moments when the goings-on should prompt the visitors to leave immediately, but they repeatedly accept the most ridiculous of situations based upon the most tenuous of explanations. In a lot of ways, they're no different from the idiots who get picked off one by one in so many cheap slasher films. Additionally, there are few surprises here. Aster is obviously a big fan of folk horror, especially The Wicker Man (1973), but he allows reverence to the tropes supersede narrative inventiveness, leading to predictability.

That said, however, I did enjoy Midsommar. Aesthetically impressive, and built on a terrific central performance, Aster's mastery of tone sees him through. The script could use some work, but the ominous sense of dread is palpable throughout and the depiction of a toxic relationship is penetrating and emotionally honest. Unnerving and audacious, Midsommar is an exceptionally confident piece of filmmaking, if not necessarily an exceptional piece of filmmaking.

Expand

Artistic, interesting and sometimes funny. Midsommar always scratches the edge of discomfort but unfortunately does not manage to create the real horror factor. It doesn't hit you to the core like Hereditary.

The film is very ritual and very interesting in its basic orientation / subject matter, there are also some really good scenes and shocking moments, but in the end I was a bit disappointed and really wanted more horror.

So when it came to the horror factor, the film left me cold. In spite of all this, this film is very special in its design, well acted and designed with impressive images.

The film portrays possibly one of the best horror film performances to date by Florence Pugh (the main female protagonist) who pours her heart and soul out so completely and yet in a way that feels utterly real and human. 'Midsommar' also boasts its best work with enchanting cinematography and a psychedelic soundscape, and slowly unveils unnerving revelations that would make one squirm and yet fail to avert their gaze from the entrancing, almost hypnotic feel of the picture. Ultimately though, the film falls short to a slow-moving and fairly simplistic narrative, that spans over a largely excessive run time. I would recommend this film to those who are fans of the artistic and moody side of the psychological horror genre, who can also forgive the elongated runtime and the dismal, contemplative pace. 'Midsommar' scores a 7/10. Expand

The movie had a story and it's execution was also good. In some scenes, movie loses the grip but overall it goes well till the end. The main flaw of this movie was the performances by the actors. None of them was able to connect with the audience. Other than that, everything went right.

Overall, a good movie which you may or may not enjoy. This mainly depends on the story you want to see. I liked the movie, not that much but it was a nice experience.

The idea behind the film is good. The idea is to talk about the pain of a loss, the elaboration of mourning, the distance of those who should be part of your family and the welcome from those who do not expect. But here characters feel like they're not always well written, the movie never takes flight and turns out to give the wrong idea of Sweden and its communities. Then I saw the director's cut and characters are so better written than the ones you see in theater version. Times are dilated in the first half of the movies and then rythm becomes faster and more compelling. . You feel like there are skills in Aster directing and they are more evident in the director's cut to which i give my score. Great performance by Florence Pugh. The score Is more like a 6,5 for the theater version but I will give it 7 for the slightly better director's cut and for the madness and originality of the script. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is the type of movie where the reaction of the people around you is more scary than the movie itself. The movie is around cults, how they pull the right strings, manipulate your vulnerability and desire to "belong" to commit horrible injustices and to over react to upsetting things. If you believe that the end of the movie is a "happy ending", then congrats, you're the type of person who believes to be "too smart" to join a cult, but in fact you are the most easy to manipulate into join one. On a site note, never stay with someone who you don't actually love just because you feel pity for them, you're just hurting both. At the end, the protagonist just changed one toxic relationship for another. People say is a "happy ending" because she makes the cult kill her boyfriend by burning him alive, because he "cheated" (the cult drugged him and he was actually raped, but she didn't know that, the cult lied to her), but the fact she thought that he deserves to be burned alive because of that, is beyond me (or to any reasonable person with a cold head). What is scary is that people think this is "empowering". If the gender were reversed then they would say otherwise, which says a lot about out horrible society. Expand

However, I went in with a somewhat neutral feeling given the negativity surrounding the film from audiences. As I saw the film today, I must say that Midsommar was a pretty big letdown for me. The movie starts off really slow and pretty much never gets faster. Midsommar was predictable from the start, and a lot of the great scenes were spoiled from the trailer and an early script I had read online. Personally, I felt the movie was overhyped, and it wasn’t as disturbing or scary as critics have described. Yet the visuals were stunning as expected, and the movie did have fantastic acting. At nearly 2.5 hours, Midsommar felt really long, but there were enough amazing scenes to keep me entertained. (55/100) Expand

This film, marketed as a horror film, turned out to be less horror and more of a drama about relationships and the difference of humanity. Parts of this film feel more like a black comedy and you never really feel all that scared. The acting is fine, but the dialogue is forgettable and some set pieces that are clearly trying to elicit emotions of terror and fear are instead met by feelings of comedy. The setup of this film is excruciating long and unnecessarily complex, with many of the more interesting plot points of the introduction being sidelined or not at all mentioned in the future. The pacing is also ridiculously slow resulting in me forgetting that it's a horror movie. In order to make up for the lack of truly horrific elements, this film instead chooses to go overboard on the gore, which honestly (while disgusting) has little effect. Gore does not equate to scary. The plot is extremely predictable and the character's are just as forgettable as this film's dialogue. Certain elements feel completely unneeded while others are drawn out too long. Hereditary was a great example of horror as it preyed on your expectations and subverted them. This film plays it safe and the plot could likely be predicted by anyone who knows anything about a stereotypical "cult horror" film.

While it is easy to be harsh on this movie, there are certain elements that work nicely for it. Pugh's performance is the strongest out of all the characters, the soundtrack succeeds in creating the eerie mood this film aims to create, and the cinematography is absolutely brilliant. While these elements are most certainly impressive, they get weighed down by the criticisms above.

Overall, Midsommar is nothing short of a disappointment, choosing to focus on boring plot points and forgettable characters while brushing the more interesting parts of the setup to the side. This film fails as a horror movie by being, in all areas save for gore, quite dull, and is quite a forgettable experience. It also fails as a drama or a comedy by doing neither one effectively. In total, what you get is a mediocre film that tries to convey a theme, but does so with varying levels of success.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The film was very original and gorgeous visually. I enjoyed the subtle details within most shots. That being said, the story could've used more focus to support the stylized film. There should've been a clearer and deeper progression of Dani's arc in order to make her final decision more impactful as a moment. AND/OR there should've been a deeper dive into the culture of this Scandinavian society by expanding on the meaning of this grand ceremony and focusing on the idea of life-cycles which drive these people to murder and mutilate their guests. By cutting some of the unnecessary scenes addressing the dynamic of Christian's friend group there would be room to expand on Dani and this twisted, but somehow, beautiful culture; sharpening the focus of the film. I am all for having the audience make connections and inferences, but I felt as though we had to guess about too many things. Expand

I have just read the negative user reviews of this movie but all those comments should apply to Black Dynamite, which has those objective complaints. As for the cult, it was almost propaganda to me. If I were a character from the movie, I would have easily been suspicious, but eould still be sold for the well-implemented aesthetics. This capitalist world has been so bland, and this movie just rekindled a childhood thought from me. As a psychedelic enthusiast, I got nearly mesmerized by the tunes the cultists were celebrating to. However, the "paganism" presented in this movie is bastardized like in The Wicker Man. To see what I mean, watch Thulean Perspective's Wicker Man review on Bit Chute. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Are we not supposed to get this movie? "Midsommar" had its moments of shock, terror and disgust, as is Ari Aster's style of film making, but fails to deliver just about everything, story-wise. The characters' motivation (especially the cults) if not vague, is simply non-apparent. Judging from its lack of clear motive, the film could be viewed as pointless, with too many unnecessary scenes that only add up to its length, which was also problematic. A few strong moments/ scenes emerged from the film, only to be followed by more boring bits of ritualistic crap that is almost unbelievable. The only takeaway I had for this film is the cinematography, and how the director superbly uses color in his film. Everything else falls under satisfactory, bad, and mediocre. Expand

Midsommar is Director Ari Aster’s follow-up film to Hereditary. Hereditary (check our review in facebook review archive) garnered some mixed reviews, but most were positive. Let’s see if Midsommar can continue with that momentum.

Unfortunately, I don’t believe it will. There are many things I could say that are bad about this movie, but let’s start with the good. The movie’s cinematography, especially when set in Sweden, is mesmerizing. Almost every shot is done intentionally and artfully. One of my favorite shots, occurs early on and is insignificant to the plot, but I just remember thinking the use of a drone was dope. You go from riding in the car with the characters to flying to floating upside down then coming back to reality in the matter of moments. This was just one of the cool shots throughout the movie. Outside of the cinematography, the only other good part were the random villagers. They were on point. I can’t say the same for the actual cast. The villagers are fascinating and spellbinding. They are the magic of the film, but beyond them, there comes issues.

The first issue with the movie was the main cast. Do not get me wrong. They were not horrendous. They were just not good. I truly believe, if the movie were cast (or directed) better, my feelings of the movie would have been different. It: Chapter 2 was a trailer prior to the movie. I couldn’t help but to think that if that cast were in this movie, we might be talking about an Oscar rather than a Razzie (no, it’s not that bad). Each actor seemed to fit their character; however, each individual character was lacking or felt insignificant. Either way, each character had limited development; and, except for Dani (Florence Pugh) in the beginning, you ultimately don’t care about the characters. It’s hard to get engrossed in a movie you barely care about what happens to the characters.

On top of the poor character development, the thing everyone came to see was missing, the suspense/mystery/horror. Let’s start with what there was of the mystery. (NO Spoiler Coming- all info comes from the Trailer see above) We know something went wrong with Dani and that’s why she’s deciding to go on this trip. But why and how does it fit into the overall storyline? We know they are going to a commune in Sweden where there is a interesting summer tradition. What are the traditions, the meanings and what is going on? These questions keep rolling through your mind throughout the movie.

That’s where mystery ends. Everything else is either predictable or straight forward (if you take random villagers at their word). For as weird and psychedelic as it tries to be, the movie lacks imagination, especially after Hereditary’s randomness. I’m surprised this director had an issue with imagination and originality. There are a couple shocking moments but even more anti-climatic moments. The movie feels more stagnate than suspenseful at times. In addition to that, for horror fans there are only 2 minutes worth of material that could be considered scary out of a 141 minute runtime. Talk about too long for too little payout. This was quite a letdown compared to the enthralling trailer. The only hope is that Hereditary and Midsommar are actually a part of a connected trilogy or universe.

In a nutshell, this movie looks beautiful but isn’t worth spending the money in the theater UNLESS you enjoyed Hereditary. The movie delivers in weirdness, but execution with suspense is lacking. Wait for this to come to Netflix and do not expect to be scared or surprised.

The shot"Hereditary" director Ari Aster follows up his 2018 stunner with "Midsommar," another twisted jaunt through the world of paganism and the occult. On a technical level, everything that made "Hereditary" so memorable is retained. The shot composition and camera movements are incredibly well-executed and vibrant. The effects are horrific and indelible. The acting is superb, featuring Florence Pugh's finest work to date. But what separates "Midsommar" from "Hereditary" is something a bit more intangible -- the stories vary too different in terms of efficiency. Even at two hours long, "Hereditary" feels as though no moment is wasted, with every scene building to some sort of reveal or twist. "Midsommar" suffers mightily from an excess number of scenes, elements, and even plot threads and characters that needn't be there, ultimately dragging the pacing down and inflating the running time to at least a half-hour longer than I feel it needed to be. Aster also goes AWOL a few too many times here, which was a trifling blemish in "Hereditary" that's evolved into a full blown blister ailing the entire third act of this movie. Whereas "Hereditary" featured only a couple of scenes/moments that made my audience chuckle or scratch their proverbial heads, "Midsommar" has at least a good handful or so that had my theater rolling in laughter at what I'm not even sure are intentionally comedic beats. I know that comparing a filmmaker's movie to their prior work is a bit unfair, but it's all I have to go off of at present. This could have benefitted from a thorough rewrite, in my opinion, but I still thank God there are studios like A24 to champion the unique visions of filmmakers like the one at hand here. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I mean, at what point in a film are you simply unable to look past the abundance of C- horror movie decisions? It's a beautifully shot film, with an intriguing story line, but the positive elements get completely overshadowed by the fact that red flags are presented to each of the characters early on into the film, and yet they choose to continue on as if everything's cool. And we're supposed to believe that because there's tension within the group? It just doesn't cut it. I mean, seriously -- your friends go missing for 24 hours, following one of the characters witnessing the girl whose fiance left her out of nowhere running and screaming for her life. While some random dude interjects and is just like, "If I may, there was a misunderstanding and I drove her to the station myself." And then Christian is missing his friends, sees his girlfriend hoisted up like a God, is all alone and is like, "Screw it, I'm so vulnerable right now I might as well drink this random concoction and trip my balls off while this freaky redhead tries to take advantage of me." And Dani is so drugged up at the end that she concludes Christian's actions of cheating on her, clearly performed under complete duress, warrant his execution by immolation? Yeah, I get it, she was the perfect candidate with the loss of her family. But shock value with Ari Aster can only get you so far. I saw it with Hereditary's limitations, and it was front and center again in Midsommar. Slow paced scenes of brutal depictions of death isn't always artsy, sometimes it just looks as an attempt to make up for a more profound effort at creating an unsettling vibe. Anyway, Aster clearly watched The Witch right before getting to work on this one, because you could have seen this plot play out from a mile away. I'm hopeful that he doesn't keep recycling old material involving vivid scenes of brutality and people staring for inordinate amounts of time in shock. Expand

A serious problem in my point of view and is that despite its ambition and enormous pretention, Midsommar is a film unable to provoke and I say that that's a problem because that's precisely what it tries to achieve.

Nowadays there's a new wave of horror separated from the most basic and commercial aspect of it. In many occasions some great stuff comes out of it and on other occasions is just what you would call ''artistic garbage'' Midsommar walks between both sides of that spectrum and it's surprising to say so but there's no point or catalyst that makes you believe there's something more relevant about what you're seeing.
Once you analyze what you saw if you compare it with what it's supposed to be trying to say, well that's where the huge imbalance appears.

You could say it shouldn't be taken so seriously. After all, the purest essence of the film deals with a bad relantionship and the urges of breaking up but that's also a great inconvenience because that's what makes you wonder, what is it all about?

And above all, and I can't say how much I should emphasize this, what the hell happened to the atmosphere?
What Aster achieved in Hereditary completely vanishes here and everything is due to its own environment.
Yes the commune is strange and bizarre. Their customs are disturbing and brutal and violent and you're experiencing those oddities like the main characters. You also feel like and outsider and a foreigner but you have an extra knowledge: You know that something bad will happen and therefore what you have left is simply to wait for it, therefore all the suspense goes out the window and the only thing that Midsommar has left is not what it can still try to build but to at least try to get you interested in knowing where it will eventually lead to.

And getting to the ending, understanding that like the commune, Dani purges her own evil by condemning her boyfriend to death, the void that remains is enormous given the little satisfaction the story provided me. And so it's inevitable to ask why it lasted so long.

With 147 minutes, Midsommar over-extends its stay, consequently I cannot think what can be added with the director's cut, which I will inevitably end up seeing but consider my emotion and interest considerably diminished.

Is a year enough for an artist to create a good movie? We know that production companies try to make more and more money by exploiting the phenomenon of the moment and this seems to me one of those cases. Unfortunately midsommar is a failed film. I say unfortunately because Asay has some directorial (and writing) qualities out of the ordinary, with an exceptional ability to create tension. But if the beautiful first short part of the film makes you think you are at the consecration of an artist, the second part, that takes a completely different path from what we saw earlier, is lackluster and takes refuge in situations seen in too many films and to become more and more a bad copy of "The wicker man", with an ending that makes you smile rather then letting the viewer think, or put anxiety. It would seem almost as if two different scripts had been joined. The photography is beautiful but points excessively to aesthetics and symmetry even when there is no need for it, ending only in a mannerism. Too bad, because I repeat, the first half hour left us thinking about another great film Expand

It's a slow pace movie with goodish character building (some of them are just there with no explanation). But it's predictable as hell. From the start of the movie (around 30 minutes in) you know what will happen and you just expect it. For me this is the worst thing that you can do to your audience. The gore is there just to shock you.
in the last hour I was distracted by other things in my room and that means that the movie lost my attention. Finishing my humble opinion about this. Watch the movie and have fun with it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Midsommar is a glimpse into the sadistic world of what happens when you take dark folklore and mix it with hallucinogenic drugs. There is a lot to like here from a cinematography standpoint but with a lack of character substance to make you truly connect and or feel any emotion toward the Hårga nor the group of Americans. Least of all Dani, who is abysmal is every respect as a character with no redeeming qualities to be spoken of. Her companions all had their flaws, Christian especially but to let him be sacrificed in place of a random cannibal cult member is absurd and outside of rational thought. The ending I am assuming is saying that she has let go of all of her problems in a symbolic moment of purity by flame but also incites that she is now one with the Hårga. I can't wrap my head around how this movie got such rave reviews. To sum it all up:
Pros: Cinematography and Music that help you feel as though you are there and also have taken the hallucinogens that the cast has due to the bizarre breathing effect that seems to become more and more omnipresent as the film reaches its bombastic conclusion.
Cons: Lack of character depth and non-sensible story line that will leave most who watch it with more sighs than anything else. 5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie starts out underlining how bad of a boyfriend Jack is for having the audacity to even considering his own mental health and lifegoals amidst his girlfriends(Dani) breakdowns, and need for his constant support, regardless of his own needs, and capacity. Love is a two way street right? Not according to this movie, which it plainly states during a phone between Dani and her friend.

In the end they torch Jack, because he was selected by Dani as a sacrifice. It was his own fault for being an unfaithful **** I guess. The movie is trying to send a message about community, and togetherness, in today's individualistic oriented society, which I can appreciate, but I could've been without the typical tropes of masculin ambition versus female sensitivity, which is an extremely simplistic way of looking at relationships and the way we interact with each other in modern society.

Watching this movie, I kinda felt I was being force fed a "woke" manhating statement.

Great acting though, especially by Florence Pugh.

Thank you Ari Aster for the nightmares, thank you for the distressing images embedded in my brain forever, you’re definitely one of the most unique filmakers out there but I’m honestly frightened of what you’ll make next because I can’t take much more of this. Sorry Ari Aster but between this and Hereditary I feel I’m done with your films, no doubt there is an audience for Midsommar (though I have to question their sanity) but I’m not part of it.

Dani (Florence Pugh), her boyfriend Christian (Jack Reynor) and his friends travel to a remote part of Sweden for the fabled mid-summer festival. What’s that? A rural village out in the middle of nowhere? Why yes that does sound like we’ve got a cult on our hands doesn’t it? And you know what that means, eerie singing, some ritualistic sacrifices and lots of scenic shots of people dancing through the fields with flowers and pretty white garments. Call it whatever genre you want because it certainly doesn’t limit itself to only one. It feels like it wants to be a horror, though the result is not a conventional one but it’s pretty damn horrifying at times. Florence Pugh gave everything to this performance, it’s the one good thing I can take away from Midsommar. Jack Reynor simply shows up to read his lines and Will Poulter is the only damn person reacting the way you would expect someone to react in this scenario. He is a genuine mood in this film and adds some much needed comic relief.

As with Hereditary the first half plays out much stronger than the second. The set up was great but afterwards it starts to lose itself. I didn’t hate it and it’s not Mother! levels of bad but at some point I could tell where it was going and lost interest in the plot completely. I felt it didn’t have the atmosphere of a true horror movie but found a way to use graphic violence to unsettle you. I should also note that the way this film and indeed Hereditary portrays grief is really unlike anything else I’ve witnessed onscreen, largely due to Florence Pugh and Toni Collette. Their performance is so raw it’s almost unbearable to watch. And that pretty much sums up Midsommar in a sentence, almost unbearable to watch. That’s what it’s like to endure an Ari Aster movie, you know you should look away but you just can’t, it will push you to your limits and if you thought you didn’t have a limit then maybe Midsommar will help you find it. That’s not to say I didn’t get anything out of it. I laughed on more than one occasion, now whether I should have been laughing or not is up for debate. Yes one should not purchase a ticket for Midsommar without seriously considering if you’re going to want to see it, I know I could have happily gone the rest of my life without seeing it. Recommended for fans of Hereditary, this film is not for everyone, I repeat if you did not like Hereditary then you probably won’t like Midsommar either so you’ve been warned.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Midsommar is a very pretty movie, but overall it's bland and frustrating to watch. I'll try to get into this without too much spoilers.

So the story's main focus and villain is a cult (obviously). In a genre that is already oversaturated with cults Midsommar does basically nothing new or interesting with it's run of the mill, "connected with nature", religious fanatics. That itself is unfortunate but certainly not enough to make a movie inherently bad, what really makes this movie so frustrating to watch is the lack of conflict.

So why was there barely any conflict? Because the entire main cast is incompetent. In fact, there was one character who was genuinely likable because he was the most unapologetically incompetent and disrespectful. The only character that seemed to have a normal reaction to the situation and may have proved to be competent later on died very early in the movie. There was one moment quite far in the movie when I genuinely thought things were heading in a good direction, a main character had (finally) caught on to the fact that he was being drugged and refused to drink the "tea" he was given. The way he boldly declared he didn't want to have a bad trip as he handed the tea back gave me hope he was going to put up some sort of resistance, but about 10 seconds later without any coercion he changed his mind and drank the tea. Throughout the entire movie there wasn't a single scene that didn't go as the cult had planned. Honestly I dont think that alone would make the movie bad either, but a generic villain that ALSO faces no conflict is just not that interesting to watch. The entire movie felt like it was leading up to some great revelation only to be predictable and boring, granted, it had a little bit of gross factor. I did like the soundtrack, and although I didnt find a single moment of the movie to be the least bit creepy or scary, the music helped create high tension. There was some beautiful cinematography that makes it difficult to rate this movie so poorly, but all things considered, Midsommar was mediocre at best.

The visuals are stunning, the cinematography was beautiful, and the acting was great but the actual story was meh. The characters weren’t well developed outside of the lead and it relied too much on the concept of ‘foreign cultures are different and therefore scary’ instead of being scary. ...Also, I cannot imagine the cult will last long by bringing people from other countries with passports where government will notice when they don’t return (they ask how long you will be staying for a reason) and loved ones who will probably know roughly where they were going. Just watch Hereditary again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had watched Hereditary and enjoyed it for the most part. There was so much in it that was unsettling and I really enjoyed that aspect of it. I was hoping to get the same feeling from this movie. Sadly, I was very disappointed with this movie. There were some disturbing scenes in this movie but overall I found this film to be kind of all over the place. There were a lot of plot points that were introduced and then just never flushed out. I'm all for ambiguity but I felt like some scenes didn't contribute to the story at all. I did not like any of the characters at all other than the main lead. I thought that the two friends bickering about their project was so unnecessary and childish. I couldn't relate to the culture or the experiences of the characters in the movie which may contribute to my low score. This movie could be scary and interesting for those with a background in that culture but I found this movie uninteresting. Expand

It is obvious what is going to happen the second they arrive at the commune. There is not one person in this movie who does not come across as either annoying, repugnant, or both. The American college students are universally awful characters, particularly Dani’s hateful dolt of a boyfriend Christian. It is also far too long (2 h. 27 min.) This is simply undercooked torture porn that, unforgivably, puts on the pretense of being something better than torture porn. It is not scary or interesting in the slightest. If you’re in the mood for some good horror revolving around bizarre pagan rituals, just watch the Wicker Man. Expand

Also, almost all the characters are stupid and unlikeable. Like the entire premise of the film would set off huge red flags if anyone suggested it in real life. "Hey guys, want to come to my commune in the middle of nowhere, miles away from civilisation?" To most people, this would sound like an invitation to get murdered by the Manson family. But not the characters in this film. They're not even put off when they see two people ritualisticly killed in front of them. Anyone with half a brain would have left right then and there. They're also terrible people, for the most part. The main characters boyfriend, for instance is not only a terrible, insensitive boyfriend, but he's also a terrible friend. At one point he tries to steal one of his friends academic ideas. When he died, I felt nothing as he totally deserved it. Expand

While presented as a story about psychological health and well-being painted on the canvas of an allegedly suspenseful thriller, the picture comes up woefully short in the fright department (even though it tries to compensate for that with ample gratuitous gore), largely because, at a 2:20 runtime, it takes far too long to reach its final destination (which is easily visible from miles away). Florence Pugh's often-overwrought performance in this "Wicker Man" knock-off becomes tiresome, almost laughable, as the story wears on...and on...and on as it inches toward its wholly unfulfilling conclusion. Save your money. Expand

The pagan village looks beautiful and is created with the attention to detail. The music, dances and singing are also great. The horror part is grotesque to the point of only laughable. People laughed at the absurdity of the scenes during my screening. Tonally this movie sucks. It tries to be a pointless ironic horror entertainment, psychological drama and initiate deep philosophical conversations - all in one. It achieves only the first goal - pointless entertainment. "Midsommar" is too ridiculous to start a more serious conversation about anything. And I think Ari Aster tried to say here something about ego/individuality culture vs collective culture. Criticise and ridicule organised religion and comfort people find in rituals and false ideas of belonging to "the family". Something about adult children subconsciously wanting the death of theirs parents as a form of liberation. But all those ideas fall flat because the plot of this movie is so ridiculous that it doesn't encourage that kind of discussion. It is just to weak of a movie even on the superficial level to start a conversation about deeper meanings. I also don't understand the praise that Florence Pugh receives for her performance in this movie. Yes, at the beginning she's great, but with the progression of the plot, her character becomes less and less real or interesting. All the characters in this movie act like ideas of people and not real people. I've read reviews which said that the main character's boyfriend is a jerk. Well, Dani also was very unlikable (all the characters in the movie were). She was very needy and she was as toxic in their relationship as her boyfriend. If it comes to her psychological trauma I think the director forget to show us what was her family like. That would perhaps create the ground for some kind of pay off in the finale and the ideas behind her sister's decision. "Midsommar" looks beautiful at times, but the plot is too weak, ridicules and laughable to provoke viewers to dive deeper. Very shallow and pointless movie. As an entertainment is a pointless B-movie. And it's not that original. It's derivative of Robert Eggers' "The Witch", Ari's own first movie "Hereditary", and many more. Only the superficial folk aspect of it is kinda new and interesting. Very pretentious artsy-farsty movie. I say "no" to Ari Aster and "Yes" to Robert Eggers. From those two Eggers is a far more focused director. Expand

Paleoanthropological and also biological pathology (including flora and fauna) of love life, driven by endogenous and exogenous drugs (chemical key stimuli): does Aster have something new to say? Let alone. Does he have his own expressive peculiarity? But for goodness sake: he plunders the cinematic imagery of the sectarian or bucolic community of "Village of the Damned" (1960), "The Wicker Man" (1973) with its remake (2006), "The Village" (2004), "The Sacrament" (2013) re-evaluating the video for "Burn the Witch" by Radiohead, which at least synthesizes the agony from 147 minutes to 4 scarce. And he does even worse: as the Italian subtitle of his previous film "Hereditary" states, he investigates "the roots of evil". Woe to seek whether there is even only the possibility of good and its roots. "And sweet to me is shipwreck on this sea of nihilism".

This movie is slow... And when I say slow, I mean very slow. So slow in fact that my brother left half way through to go sleep in the car... The story starts like your typical horror movie, Kids go on a trip to a mysterious place where bad things happen. Which I was fine with because I’ve been wanting a good cult movie for a while. The cult in this movie is interesting too see what they do and how they live but I feel they put too much of an emphasis on it because sometimes shots last forever that should only last a minute or two. When stuff actually does happen the film is great, but that is overshadowed by boring stuff that didn’t need to happen, if this film was an hour shorter I probably would’ve gave it a 7 or an 8. I will say that the cinematography is perfect in this film, If this film has one great thing, it’s the camera shots, they are beautiful and Ari Aster should win awards for that alone, but other than that, this movie was disappointing, especially after the great “Hereditary”. Hopefully one day their will be a good cult movie. Expand

Uninspired nonsense with a few decent landscape shots...

I had high hopes going into this movie, but those were quickly snuffed out. Most of the film's scenes are too long for their own good, and are composed of either lethargic acting or wide establishing shots of the same two plain houses. As for the plot, it was dragged out for far too long. Not to mention it was riddled with nonsense that the writers tried to make seem somewhat meaningful.

In short, the whole movie could've been summed up to about 45 minutes of meaningless garbage but is stretched to nearly two and a half hours.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was a directionless, disingenuous, disaster. It feels like it goes forever and what little plot there is it meanders through like there is no hurry or impetus to get any type of resolution. The characters are thin with little or no development. Normally in a movie of this nature there is some kind of growth or obstacle for the protagonist to "get over" but the main character starts and ends the same way. im sure that if you reversed the genders of Dani and Christian, and showed a previously faithful, patient and supportive woman, being drugged and coerced into having sex that she didnt particularly want then being condemned to burn to death by her jealous boyfriend then people would not being singing the praises of this movie in quite the same way.

Midsommar is a boring, tedious, dumb and pretentious piece of cinematic excrement.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bad movie. Very bad.

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. I like the whole indigenous society culty thing but it left no purpose, like what did I just watch. It just left me with so many questions. Who tf was Dani's sister(elaborate pls??), why are all the outsiders such dumba**es except Simon and Connie?? Like how, after witnessing how these people view death, how could you possibly think staying there is a good idea. bUt ThEy SeEm So nIcE. Yeah, they also seemed positively lovely when they bludgeoned people to death, skinned your friends, burned them alive, roofied and raped them. And can I just say Josh is literally so. so. so. dumb, like how does he think this "sacred library" would just be unguarded while the elders knew there were outsiders with a phone there. plus he took those pictures with flash on. nice. And can I just talk about our protagonist here. She is one of the most stupid people I have seen in a horror movie. Her absolute inability to comprehend that these people lOvE death is sending me. Oh, they like flower crowns and twirling around and dancing to some nice indigenous music? Nice, let me join, oh yeah, they kind of bludgeoned two people to death yesterday and two of my new acquaintances just disappeared, which I felt totally odd about but decided to ignore, because I have totally learned after my family's death I need to start trusting my senses more, but all that is besides the point right I mean they drink trippy flower tea and wear pretty dresses. There and the end. I would've given this a one star if not for me learning that Jack Reynor insisted on that full-frontal scene because he felt like girls in horror movies always get slut-shamed while being naked before their death, and for equality's sake he did that, he really did that. Wow, praise. The best part of the movie imo. But not his actual schlong, the narrative behind it.

It's pretty much a divided crowd -- you will either love this movie or hate it. For me, the movie should have been categorized as "Absurdity, Pretentiousness, Gore" there is very little suspense or thrills. Basically it's an overbloated film where the director is in love with himself and every shot and scene. You sit through basically 2 hrs of NOTHINGNESS until things turn to horror and absurdity. Imagine going to a movie that was about a wedding and in the movie EVERY BORING DETAIL was presented i.e., the cake cutting, every dance, every speech, every boring bit of the ritual. I'm dumbfounded by the 10 scores, this movie is so far from perfect it's laughable and you do laugh, not with the movie but at the movie. It also explains why I had to go to the other side of town to watch it as only one theater was showing it in my state (less than a fortnight in from release date) - that says it all really, no one's watching this garbage.
