Very predictable, very overrated & poorly written, the only good thing is it's cinematography but that's not enough to make a good movie. I'm dumbfounded by the 10 scores, this movie is so far from perfect it's laughable and you do laugh, not with the movie but at the movie. It also explains why I had to go to the other side of town to watch it as only one theater was showing it in my state (less than a fortnight in from release date) - that says it all really, no one's watching this garbage. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I 've not laughed so much internally since watching "Carry On Screaming". I say internally because I was watching it in an arthouse cinema and an "arthouse" crowd is too polite and too emotionally controlled to respond honestly when viewing trash. I should have guessed by the way this film disappeared quickly from the multiplexes that the general viewing public had been warned off this film through word of mouth and I think the money men who backed it might be worried that word had got around that this self-indulgent, vanity project written and directed by Ari Aster was never going to get much affection from the viewing public.
Sadly, the film carried a reputation before it that equated it with the horror classics such as "The Shining", "The Wicker Man" and the more recent "Kill List" - a high bar that a fast-paced,quickly-told prologue implied might be happening here.
But no, weirdness and predictability of the "look behind you" type takes over and the standard horror beats had me mentally betting who was going to go first. Much has been made by the critics of the film being set in daylight and being full of springtime colour. For me this was a novelty that quickly wore off. This is a long film - 140 minutes - and the director has plenty of opportunities to satisfy the true horror fan. But when the level of spending on plastic flowers outweighs the amount spent on prosthetic makeup, you know you won't be jumping out of your seat too many times.
I wish I'd been there when Aster pitched this movie to the money men - that would have made an interesting film in its' own right. I'm sure he used the phrases "horror", "isolated pagan cult" "Sweden", "drugs", "sex", "blond Nordic types", "naive young Americans", "sunshine", "strange forbidden buildings", etc... to beguile them into parting with their money. For me this is his second strike. "Hereditary" had a couple of decent shocks but never achieved the level of quality given to it by the critics. The same thing has happened here. I hope that by participating in it , the careers of Will Poulter, Jack Reynor and even the "bombproof" Florence Pugh are not going to go down the plughole - anyone remember Milly Shapiro or Alex Wolff?
If you expect a horror film - don't go. If you expect a gory thriller - don't go.If you expect a travelogue about the way isolated communities can develop in the manner of a National Geographic film - this is the film for you !!

I have never been so dissatisfied by a movie that I wasn’t even sure what to expect from it. It’s not that it’s poorly acted (mostly) or that it’s poorly directed; because it’s not. The problem with the movie is that, for a film sold on its ability to make the viewer feel creeped out, it never feels creepy it just feels strange... and laughably so. This is by far one of the funniest movies I have ever watched, not because it was trying to be but because I, and a lot of the others in the cinema, were laughing AT the movie. There is no character development, no sensical plot and no need for half of the scenes to even be included or as long as they are. I am baffled by the critical success that this movie has become as it’s just a bad movie. I could remove scenes or characters and it wouldn’t make a difference to the movie. The things the movie did well it didn’t do enough with and there is no resolution or repercussions for the things that happens over the course of the movie. I can imagine people that enjoyed the movie will read this and say “you just didn’t understand” or “it’s trying to be confusing and vague because that’s how the main character is feeling through the movie” but that doesn’t make a good movie. In fact there was nothing to enjoy in this movie, nobody to route for and not enough happening over the 146 minute run time to get really engaged in the film and this is why this is the closest I have ever came to walking out of a movie over an hour in and the only time I have ever written a review of a movie as to warn people to not bother going to see this one. While presented as a story about psychological health and well-being painted on the canvas of an allegedly suspenseful thriller, the picture comes up woefully short in the fright department (even though it tries to compensate for that with ample gratuitous gore), largely because, at a 2:20 runtime, it takes far too long to reach its final destination (which is easily visible from miles away). Florence Pugh's often-overwrought performance in this "Wicker Man" knock-off becomes tiresome, almost laughable, as the story wears on...and on...and on as it inches toward its wholly unfulfilling conclusion. Save your money. Expand

It is overly graphic for the sake of being so and has so many subplots that eventually end up leading nowhere that you might question the two and a half runtime. It has an overwhelming sense of dread throughout but it isn't rewarding. Far too on the nose for any of the foreshadowing to feel paid off and is just in your face about it. The director is so self indulgent in everything he does that watching it I kept wondering when scenes would end. The American college students are universally awful characters, particularly Dani’s hateful dolt of a boyfriend Christian. It is also far too long (2 h. 27 min.) It's pretty much a divided crowd -- you will either love this movie or hate it. For me, the movie should have been categorized as "Absurdity, Pretentiousness, Gore" there is very little suspense or thrills. Basically it's an overbloated film where the director is in love with himself and every shot and scene. You sit through basically 2 hrs of NOTHINGNESS until things turn to horror and absurdity. Imagine going to a movie that was about a wedding and in the movie EVERY BORING DETAIL was presented i.e., the cake cutting, every dance, every speech, every boring bit of the ritual. THAT'S WHERE the 2 hr 25mins comes from!!!! This is NOT a horror movie until the last 30mins. My advice read the synopsis and then just sneak in and watch the last 30mins of the flick. We haven't seen this before? Sure we have. Leaving the auditorium after the movie, someone snorted "Nihilistic garbage," and I think that was a good appraisal of the film. The movie is tedious and predictable and gratuitously gory. It also has distinctly anti-white and anti-Christian undercurrents. In one advertising image, two young people are walking through a lovely pastoral setting toward what appears to be a wooden cross. What unsubtle message does that send about Christianity, in general? What message does it send about how the creator of this slop regards Christians? Would he have made such a movie about a village in his ancestral homeland, Israel, a movie in which the villagers are discovered to be practicing the "Blood Libel," and abducting and sacrificing tourist Christian children? Of course not. In "Midsommar," portraying some of the victim visitors as nonwhites -- visitors to a lily white Swedish hamlet -- is also some nasty messaging, on one level or another. Visually, this film is engaging and vivid and colorful. The story is mildly interesting, but predictable. I am nonetheless ashamed that any Christian or Swede agreed to participate in this spectacle. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is without a doubt the worst movie I have ever seen. I kid you not. Do not see it at all costs. It was so bad that the two other people in the theater walked out crying at the end because they wasted their money on it. The fact that this movie has generally positive reviews is absolutely asinine. Giant orgy that has no real reason to exist aside, this movie is boring and predictable as all hell. Every character is infuriatingly bland and the only part of the movie I enjoyed was seeing them each killed off because I no longer had to suffer anymore. It’s paced terribly, too. This crap fest is nearly 3 hours when it could’ve easily been a 1/3rd of that. Scenes go on forever and there’s absolutely no tension because anybody could see what’s going to happen next. Do not watch this movie. Do not. It is not good. It is not even so bad it’s good. It’s just plain bad. Watch literally anything else instead Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a political movie with the intent to once again bash white people by depicting European paganism in an evil way. The main theme: a diverse group of friends is sacrificed because white people bad.

Needless to say that this movie was praised by the usual clique and received its planned 6 million awards and nominations.

The movie is very slow. The scenes kept dragging on with boring scenery. The acting was high-school grade. The entire movie was high-school grade. Even Florence Pugh was a huge letdown. They appeared unmotivated and certainly uninspired. The movie tried to be clever by depicting foreshadowing imagery here and there. But it was too obvious.

By now the movie industry ridiculed every culture out there except for the Hebrew one. But European culture cannot be ridiculed enough and so it continues. Make no mistake, this movie is a goal oriented project and the goal wasn't to make a quality movie.

Actor Jack Reynor insisted on being filmed in full frontal nudity. Because women are too much depicted as objects of torture in horror movies. Now what an amazing White Knight hero!

Yes, you'll see a few interracial couples as well, don't you worry. I don't recall gays though, but they made the black(est) guy the most educated one. Surely that counts for something.

The movie itself is all about long winded semi trippy shots, weird overjoyed pagans and an ending which you saw coming from 6 gorillion kilometers away.

Edit two days later:

I didn't check prior to writing this review, but the director was the scrawny Ari Aster - and that isn't an Amish name. Here's his quote about this movie: "Sweden was an isolated place for a long time and what you see now is events unfolding similar to events in World War 2." He claims nationalism is rising in Sweden. I notice countries in the west take turns to be accused of that.

Ari also loves to fulfill the nudity quota.
1) In Hereditary we had nude cultists at the end.
2) In this movie we had nude cultists at the end.
3) In "The 9th Gate" we had nude cultists at the end.

I wish more people would see the patterns and respond to it as blatantly negative as I do.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie was a directionless, disingenuous, disaster. It feels like it goes forever and what little plot there is it meanders through like there is no hurry or impetus to get any type of resolution. The characters are thin with little or no development. Normally in a movie of this nature there is some kind of growth or obstacle for the protagonist to "get over" but the main character starts and ends the same way. im sure that if you reversed the genders of Dani and Christian, and showed a previously faithful, patient and supportive woman, being drugged and coerced into having sex that she didnt particularly want then being condemned to burn to death by her jealous boyfriend then people would not being singing the praises of this movie in quite the same way.

Midsommar is a boring, tedious, dumb and pretentious piece of cinematic excrement.

Uninspired nonsense with a few decent landscape shots...

I had high hopes going into this movie, but those were quickly snuffed out. Most of the film's scenes are too long for their own good, and are composed of either lethargic acting or wide establishing shots of the same two plain houses. As for the plot, it was dragged out for far too long. Not to mention it was riddled with nonsense that the writers tried to make seem somewhat meaningful.

In short, the whole movie could've been summed up to about 45 minutes of meaningless garbage but is stretched to nearly two and a half hours.

I understand that Heriditary was about grief and loss and guilt and depression etc. but this movie has NO POINT. The first hour is unbearably boring. The cliff deaths are interesting but then it goes downhill again. I had no idea what the plot was supposed to be or if there even was one. The part with the naked women was just weird. It felt unnecessary, but then again, the whole movie was unnecessary. The ending left me more unsatisfied and frustrated (at myself for wasting 2 and a half hours of my life) than an ending has ever made me.
Don’t watch this, you won’t gain anything from it. Trust me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can't recall the last time I watched something as frustrating as this film was.

Midsommar, like Hereditary before it, has proven somehow to be boring, confusing, cheap, offensive and pointless all at once.

I can certainly see where this film could be misconstrued as, "deep". After all, it's plenty strange, eccentric and mysterious. However, it's clear upon actually finishing the thing that any ideas one might have had, that there was a point to it all, was misplaced.

And before we proceed, I'm no enemy to the, "deep" horror film. I'm quite the fan of The Babadook. The difference, primarily, here, is that that film uses the horror genre as a means of exploring the deeper themes. The "deeper" themes here are a thin excuse for horrible, disturbing imagery. And these are very much not the same thing.

While we're on the subject of whether this movie has much to say, I'd like to talk about the overly graphic gore of the film. You see, I don't mind slasher films that lean heavily on grotesque imagery in order to make one's skin crawl. But most of those films are rather aware of what they are. Unfortunately, this film has so little shame that it feels the need to masquerade with it's agonizingly slow pacing and discussion of (made up) swedish culture. And yet, that doesn't stop it from selfishly wanting to have it's cake and eat it too. The film's "horror" is entirely in these graphically violent scenes, with heads being mercilessly crushed, bones pushed through the flesh, faces torn off, people burned alive, people being cut into pieces while alive, lungs pulled out through the back... The list goes on and on. This makes the film decidedly... Cheap, if not outright manipulative.

And now that we've segued in the direction of manipulation... Wow. This film is much more offensive than ridiculous slasher films portraying sex and drugs and teenagers as evil... It would seem to like you to believe that Swedish people are horrible as well. The film revolves around American students going to Sweden, only to be killed in gruelingly brutal ways by these swedish pagan folk. It twists (and outright invents) swedish traditions into such alien, strange things that it would be hard not to think of it all as simply, "evil". And if the only thing you can think of to pull upon, in order to scare people, are other cultures, then you're just carrying the flag of xenophobia unabashedly. And trust me, this film does not do these things with the intent to subvert expectation or as satire, either. Everything is played quite straight, unfortunately.

But that's far from the end of this film's sins, though you would be forgiven for thinking that this was enough, already. Because this film is, believe it or not, at the end of the day... A very pretentious ripoff of The Wicker Man. Don't believe me? Both films see Americans heading to a Scandinavian country and observing seemingly strange customs and rituals while attempting (or not even attempting, in the case of Midsommar) to unravel a mystery there. Both films revolve around the Midsommar festival. Both films include violent sacrificial rituals. Okay, okay, that might all be mere coincidence, of course. The final ritual of both films feature a man inside of a bear suit being burned alive, while the pagans look on, mocking their dying pains. If this schizophrenic, idiotic, offensive, pointless film could have afforded to be ONE thing... You'd think that would be, "original".

In conclusion, as I very much cannot wait to never have to waste another moment thinking about this putrid waste of time and effort and film, let me say this above all else...

I will never watch another film by Ari Aster.

The pagan village looks beautiful and is created with the attention to detail. The music, dances and singing are also great. The horror part is grotesque to the point of only laughable. People laughed at the absurdity of the scenes during my screening. Tonally this movie sucks. It tries to be a pointless ironic horror entertainment, psychological drama and initiate deep philosophical conversations - all in one. It achieves only the first goal - pointless entertainment. "Midsommar" is too ridiculous to start a more serious conversation about anything. And I think Ari Aster tried to say here something about ego/individuality culture vs collective culture. Criticise and ridicule organised religion and comfort people find in rituals and false ideas of belonging to "the family". Something about adult children subconsciously wanting the death of theirs parents as a form of liberation. But all those ideas fall flat because the plot of this movie is so ridiculous that it doesn't encourage that kind of discussion. It is just to weak of a movie even on the superficial level to start a conversation about deeper meanings. I also don't understand the praise that Florence Pugh receives for her performance in this movie. Yes, at the beginning she's great, but with the progression of the plot, her character becomes less and less real or interesting. All the characters in this movie act like ideas of people and not real people. I've read reviews which said that the main character's boyfriend is a jerk. Well, Dani also was very unlikable (all the characters in the movie were). She was very needy and she was as toxic in their relationship as her boyfriend. If it comes to her psychological trauma I think the director forget to show us what was her family like. That would perhaps create the ground for some kind of pay off in the finale and the ideas behind her sister's decision. "Midsommar" looks beautiful at times, but the plot is too weak, ridicules and laughable to provoke viewers to dive deeper. Very shallow and pointless movie. As an entertainment is a pointless B-movie. And it's not that original. It's derivative of Robert Eggers' "The Witch", Ari's own first movie "Hereditary", and many more. Only the superficial folk aspect of it is kinda new and interesting. Very pretentious artsy-farsty movie. I say "no" to Ari Aster and "Yes" to Robert Eggers. From those two Eggers is a far more focused director. Expand

It is a long drawn out story of a cult that has some interesting thoughts on breading, age, life, and such. I don't blame the actors, they did the best with the utterly rubbish story/script. Only redeeming factor is its filming location and cinematography, the beauty of Budapest is amazing(its supposed to be Norway in the film). In the end if you want to "experience" this film, go take a scientology reading and listen to their lecture afterward. Both are long boring and pointless in the end. Expand

Also, almost all the characters are stupid and unlikeable. Like the entire premise of the film would set off huge red flags if anyone suggested it in real life. "Hey guys, want to come to my commune in the middle of nowhere, miles away from civilisation?" To most people, this would sound like an invitation to get murdered by the Manson family. But not the characters in this film. They're not even put off when they see two people ritualisticly killed in front of them. Anyone with half a brain would have left right then and there. They're also terrible people, for the most part. The main characters boyfriend, for instance is not only a terrible, insensitive boyfriend, but he's also a terrible friend. At one point he tries to steal one of his friends academic ideas. When he died, I felt nothing as he totally deserved it. Expand

Calling this a bad film would be an understatement...actually, calling it the worst film of all time would STILL be an understatement. The character development is non-existent and the entire movie is dragged out from what could realistically be a 30-45 minute short film. There was no big plot twist ending and there were no surprises. You’d know just as much from watching the trailer as someone who watched the entire movie. There is an extremely long sex orgy scene that has no relevance to the actual plot of the film. Ari Aster is a horny middle-aged geek who should be serving burgers or living in a tent rather than making movies. This is the only review I have ever written and i felt it was absolutely necessary in hopes that I am able to warn others before it is too late. Not only is the movie extremely arrogant and stupid, it is not beautifully shot as some claim. It runs 2h30 long and scenes are extended for the purpose of making it look "recherché".
It is hard to believe that Aster really attacks the Nibelungen hippie commune as much as he despises our decadent civilisation. We are left with the smile of our protagonist who overcome her fears, humiliation and grief by murdering ex-boyfriend and random people. Aster claims to worship Lars von Trier and Bergman, however I think he totally misunderstands them both. I didn't see any of the intelligent musings on violence and art in his work, just basic, literal, violent will-to-power.... Nietzsche was totally misunderstood by the national-socialists back in the day, mind you.

What is concerning is that such a nadir of nihilism is feted by "professional" critics while they despise Lars Von Trier's work, which is not only vastly superior but, more importantly, healthy.

This movie is slow... And when I say slow, I mean very slow. So slow in fact that my brother left half way through to go sleep in the car... The story starts like your typical horror movie, Kids go on a trip to a mysterious place where bad things happen. Which I was fine with because I’ve been wanting a good cult movie for a while. The cult in this movie is interesting too see what they do and how they live but I feel they put too much of an emphasis on it because sometimes shots last forever that should only last a minute or two. When stuff actually does happen the film is great, but that is overshadowed by boring stuff that didn’t need to happen, if this film was an hour shorter I probably would’ve gave it a 7 or an 8. I will say that the cinematography is perfect in this film, If this film has one great thing, it’s the camera shots, they are beautiful and Ari Aster should win awards for that alone, but other than that, this movie was disappointing, especially after the great “Hereditary”. Hopefully one day their will be a good cult movie. Expand

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. I like the whole indigenous society culty thing but it left no purpose, like what did I just watch. It just left me with so many questions. Who tf was Dani's sister(elaborate pls??), why are all the outsiders such dumba**es except Simon and Connie?? Like how, after witnessing how these people view death, how could you possibly think staying there is a good idea. bUt ThEy SeEm So nIcE. Yeah, they also seemed positively lovely when they bludgeoned people to death, skinned your friends, burned them alive, roofied and raped them. And can I just say Josh is literally so. so. so. dumb, like how does he think this "sacred library" would just be unguarded while the elders knew there were outsiders with a phone there. plus he took those pictures with flash on. nice. And can I just talk about our protagonist here. She is one of the most stupid people I have seen in a horror movie. Her absolute inability to comprehend that these people lOvE death is sending me. Oh, they like flower crowns and twirling around and dancing to some nice indigenous music? Nice, let me join, oh yeah, they kind of bludgeoned two people to death yesterday and two of my new acquaintances just disappeared, which I felt totally odd about but decided to ignore, because I have totally learned after my family's death I need to start trusting my senses more, but all that is besides the point right I mean they drink trippy flower tea and wear pretty dresses. There and the end. I would've given this a one star if not for me learning that Jack Reynor insisted on that full-frontal scene because he felt like girls in horror movies always get slut-shamed while being naked before their death, and for equality's sake he did that, he really did that. Wow, praise. The best part of the movie imo. But not his actual schlong, the narrative behind it.

(Mauro Lanari)
Paleoanthropological and also biological pathology (including flora and fauna) of love life, driven by endogenous and exogenous drugs (chemical key stimuli): does Aster have something new to say? Let alone. Does he have his own expressive peculiarity? But for goodness sake: he plunders the cinematic imagery of the sectarian or bucolic community of "Village of the Damned" (1960), "The Wicker Man" (1973) with its remake (2006), "The Village" (2004), "The Sacrament" (2013) re-evaluating the video for "Burn the Witch" by Radiohead, which at least synthesizes the agony from 147 minutes to 4 scarce. And he does even worse: as the Italian subtitle of his previous film "Hereditary" states, he investigates "the roots of evil". Woe to seek whether there is even only the possibility of good and its roots. "And sweet to me is shipwreck on this sea of nihilism".

Watched this, and as others have noted, it was too long and pretty much a waste of time. Think Wicker Man without the Cage overacting and you will have the general idea, though admitted this one has better cinematography than that film. ButWatched this, and as others have noted, it was too long and pretty much a waste of time. Think Wicker Man without the Cage overacting and you will have the general idea, though admitted this one has better cinematography than that film. But the characters are two-dimensional, and there seems to be no consistent plot. Critics love it because they are looking beyond the walls of entertaining folks, I suppose, but as others have mentioned, when you finish this, you will want those two and a half hours back. I'll go two based solely on the beautiful camera work through most of this, but I prefer story and characters over pretty pictures. Expand

I kind of liked the cinematography. But that’s about it. Everything else was a waste of my time. Didn’t make sense, didn’t like the characters and the actors performance. Didn’t like the story -was there a story?-. Didn’t liked it, at all.

Almost too much. Give the girl a break. I'll never see the swedish the same way again. Or this movie again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Only if they worked the grief process and wth happened on the first minutes... Instead of rip off Midsommer+ The Wicker Man. The movie would benefit from 30-40 minutes off easily. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Really isn't enjoyable. Characters are forgettable, and cultist group sex made it a waste of energy and time. Expand

Waste of time. If I could choose one word to describe it, it would be stupid.

Terrible, just terrible, how people can give this movie more then a 3 is beyond me. Even beyond me is how people managed not to sleep while watching.
