Over the top arthouse horror with 'messaging' for the modern day. Another director thinking he is smarter than he actually is and a movie I cannot believe got greenlit to be made. Another director thinking he is smarter than he actually is and a movie I cannot believe got greenlit to be made. It is a case of being on the nose as can be. Acting is great from the cast, but this movie is so horribly conceived to send a message that its Title details for Men to learn from their habits. ITs barely watchable. Expand

Talk about a letdown. TheTalk about a letdown. Writer-director Alex Garland, who established himself as an exceedingly gifted new filmmaker in “Ex Machina” (2014) and “Annihilation” (2018), has really dropped the ball in this utterly ridiculous mess of a movie. The picture’s ultimately obvious, heavy-handed premise isn’t especially original or revelatory, and, no matter how much the film is dressed up in artful cinematography, a gorgeous production design and other technical accomplishments, it’s not enough to hide the fact that this is a blatant cinematic misfire from someone who’s truly capable of much, much better. This latest offering in the smart horror genre about a widowed divorcee who retreats to the country to recover from her husband’s suicide manages to maintain a certain degree of suspense in the first hour, but it seriously loses it thereafter, mixing pretention, a meandering narrative and plot developments that are utterly laughable (it evoked more chuckles than I’ve uttered at some comedies of late). This is such an awful offering, in fact, that the only reason I didn’t give it a lower score is because of its initial edgy creepiness, its admirable production values and the laudable performance of protagonist Jessie Buckley, who manages to keep this release surprisingly somewhat respectable (at least until the absolutely ludicrous final act). Here’s hoping that the director has managed to purge himself of the innately obligatory clunker that nearly every talented filmmaker has within him/her at some point in his/her career, because that’s certainly what this celluloid travesty represents. If the genders were reversed it would be called out as s e x i s t so we have to be even handed and say this movie is misandrist.
Its worst sin by far in my opinion is that it is contrived and
not as clever as it seems to think it is.

Misandrist in nature, and a far cry from the brilliant work of Ex Machina or Sunshine.

I can't add much to what has already been said from other cinemagoers. A massively disappointing effort from a once promising director.

Just another liberal trash movie that everyone should just skip. Do yourself a favor and watch something else.

From liberals to liberals. Such a pity that the A24 is going this way. Please value art. Think about something beyond your own belly button.

A24 keeps sinking downhill. The cinematography can’t hide how nauseating and dull this film becomes as it moves forward. Terrible second half, boring first. Consider yourself warned.

But I stayed, to my great dismay, and could only wish to get the rest of that hour back. Expand

It starts off really well, but it turns into nonsense pretty fast. Really disappointed.

Part of me wants to like it but I just can't get over what I perceived as major flaws. The acting is fine but my god, this movie was so painfully long that was a challenge to sit through. They could have easily cut a good 30 minutes out of this and not missed a beat, TBH it would have been much better off if they did.

I also felt like it tried way too hard with the social message it was trying to convey. Your audience isn't as bad as you think they are, They can understand things, no need to be so obvious about it next time.

I have watched a lot of bad horror movies and this one is near the bottom of the pile. It takes itself way too seriously, especially considering the ridiculous climax in which men give birth to men over and over, literally. The social commentary is so basic, the entire film is summed up with "Men...Bad?" I understand generational trauma and toxic masculinity, and this film doesn't understand those concepts at all. The creative choice to have all of the village men be played by the same actor has some potential, but its just really dumb and badly executed. Alex Garland got lucky with the scripts for 28 Days Later and Sunshine, because everything else he has done is super hacky. Oh and it's not misandrist, or misogynist, it's woefully politically ignorant altogether. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah this was silly and incredibly pretentious. I think the protagonist accidentally took way too many edibles and/or LSD. In regards to the anal births, its really bold for a movie to build in its origin story. Real world building. Expand
