Visceral and perplexing and nostalgic for those of us who grew up with Tippets work shining in more narrative based entertainment. And yet if your not into the technical aspect of what is achieved here there isn't much to chew on that hasn't already been chewed by so many half baked post apocalyptic 80's gore fests. It feels legless. Prefering to confuse rather than tell let an audience understand. Which is fine if your in the mood but frustrating if you like investing in a journey. All in all, if your into films that still take risks and experiment you will come away with something. For those that like stop motion it's simply an essential watch. Expand

Seeing the trailer I was hoping for a dialogue-less story of exploration though the assassins eyes as he descendes into this Nightmare fuel world and braves its perils to kill the mad god. kind of like the James Herbert graphic novel "the city". The set up (text scroll) and first part of the film even play to this. Unfortunately this changes by adding live action scenes that felt jarring and the viewer being placed into new scenarios with no context or intent on driving what little narrative there was forward. I started the film hopeful and left disappointed and confused. I don't care how good the visuals are they cannot replace a story. Even if that story is vague and up to the viewer to interpret, which this was not. A frustrating 80odd minute slog. Expand

This movie has some of the most unique visuals I've seen in years. It makes horror beautiful, which isn't easy to do. You can feel the passion behind every frame, every choice and element. Definitely won't be for everyone, but I'd urge every horror fan to give it a go. You will walk away going "Wtf did I just watch?" Then you'll want to watch it again just to make sure it wasn't a fever dream. Expand

Overpoweringly brilliant. Will take me years to even begin to get a real grasp on it. One of the great films of all time.

It's a corrosive vision that demonstrates why stop motion offers impressive resources to present proposals of this calibre and tone.
We're talking about an eerie, dark, sensory journey that should be savoured in that way. A grim trip full of darkness and violence.

I don't want to lock the film into a niche where it's only black and white, but either you immerse yourself in its proposal or you just don't. It's that simple.
Personally I loved it.

I feel like I was not in the right mind state for this, some of the animations and creations were truly upsetting and stomach churning. Overall, it felt excessive and empty.

The stop motion animation and abominations that were in the movie was just amazing. There is just so much creativity and imagination in creating various tools and scenes that made this movie feel incredibly alive and hellish. This can be interpreted in a few ways but for me it felt like a post-modern version of Dante's Inferno. The descent of our character into different types of ''Hell's'' with their own cities describing different type of sins was amazing(my interpretation anyway) surrounded by hellish creatures which in my opinion only a really **** up mind can create was just am amazing and very imaginative and creative experience. The sound and music was also great and fit the piece perfectly (there were a few scenes where the sound effects didn't match the style but they are rare). It also appears that this was 30 years in the making which is possibly one of the longest creation of animated movies that have released (Not forgetting Yuri Norstein and Francheska Yarbusova the overcoat which is by now probably 50 years in the making). This is a must watch to see a personal hell of the creator and it's overflow with imagination and other **** up creations. It's not for everyone but for the few that will watch it they will definitely enjoy it. Expand

There is CGI and real people mixed in occasionally (probably due to the colossal amount of time and effort stop-motion takes). It is a bit jarring, but by that point you will probably not care. The only reason this is not scoring much higher is that this is not a movie, in the same way a walking simulator is not a game. It is visually stunning, but ultimately unfulfilling. Even without verbal narration, you expect some kind of world building and goal. There is none in this. That robs it of anything other than being a demonstration of ability to string together cool looking scenes that do not add up to anything meaningful. The ending can be summed up as "screw it and lets do acid". However it is interesting that it does engender the same uselessness in the final product, that was being portrayed throughout. A strange non-movie that is still very artful.

As others have warned, there is a lot of gore, but it is usually quite silly which robs it of any lasting disgust. So if you are looking for a one watch art piece, this is a great choice at 8.5/10. If you are looking for a horror movie, this is only a 4/10.

"Mad God" (2021, 80-mins, W/D/P Phil Tippet, stop-motion animation). This effort is best described by a series of adjectives: nightmarish, otherworldly, hellscape, incoherent, absurd, bizarre. This effort is best described by a series of adjectives: nightmarish, otherworldly, hellscape, incoherent, absurd, bizarre. I'm not even sure how you rate something like this. Other well meaning viewers have rated this from 10 down to 1. It took Phil and a small army of helpers 33 years to bring this to theatres where it flopped like nothing before/since. So by that measure it was a resounding failure. Does it entertain? Only if you're into all those cited adjectives at the same time. I'm not so it's a fail for me. I can appreciate the effort and its commitment to its bizarre vision but I can't recommend it and I certainly wouldn't ever watch it again. Expand

Through a nightmarish setting and some disturbing images, the legendary Phil Tippet delivers what could probably be the culmination of his brilliant career. But, at least for me, this is too impenetrable to get involved. A little narrative would've been nice. The stop-motion looks amazing and terrifying, but the live-action segments didn't blend in that well. Although I appreciate the 30-year effort to bring this to life, I didn't find it that special, at least in storytelling terms. But who am I to criticize one of the best film animators of all time?

Warning: don't watch this while eating.

An auteur's passion project, pointedly grotesque and realized via an odd medium? Yes please.

Or rather not. This should have been a solid 10 from me but the film fails to deliver. The lack of readily apparent narrative (the film contains no dialog) leaves this a series of vignettes that burn through all the best ideas in the first 30 minutes, then proceeds to overstay its welcome for another hour. Sound design was noticeably poor IMHO, and maybe I've been desensitized but non of the visuals were as grotesque or shocking as had been billed.

Watch it for the "experience", but if you find your eyelids growing heavy after 40 minutes or so feel free to switch it off, you're not missing anything.

Disgustingly beautiful - like Grandfather Nurgle made a movie. Some things you see and you don't know WHY they are gross...but you know that they ARE gross and that's pretty interesting.
