M3GAN is a slow burn psychological thriller that turns into a slasher.
The movie takes its time to build up to the introduction of M3GAN and even then, it takes some time before the actual horror begins. But that doesn't mean it's boring. ToM3GAN is a slow burn psychological thriller that turns into a slasher.
The movie takes its time to build up to the introduction of M3GAN and even then, it takes some time before the actual horror begins. But that doesn't mean it's boring. To really see the journey from beginning to end makes this so much more than just a horror movie while at the same time delivering on the slasher fun towards the end.
While I have seen some people, and articles, complain about the movie being PG-13 there is no time during the movie that I feel there was any need for more swears, blood or gore. In fact, it feels a little like it could have ruined the movie and missed an age group this movie was made for.
This isn't an R-movie cut down to PG-13, this movie was made from the ground up to be PG-13, and you can tell. But that doesn't mean the movie ever feels childish. This isn't a movie made for children as much as a movie made to be suitable for children. It's still a very mature story even if there is some dark humor and a couple of goofy characters.
Take a child who's interested in horror and go watch this, or go watch it yourself. I would also like to praise young Violet McGraw who did some really great emotional acting in what must have been a very tough role.… Expand

We all want to do bigger and better things in the new year, right? Bring it on, 2023! Let’s start with the highly anticipated sci-fi, horror, thriller, M3GAN, which was released in theaters on January 6, 2023. I know you’ve seen the trailers and all the memes of the dancing, creepy robot doll. Now, the movie that inspired all of that virality is finally out. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype.

The basic plot of M3GAN begins when Cady (Violet McGraw) comes to live with her aunt, Gemma (Allison Williams). Cady is mourning the death of her parents, and Gemma is ill-equipped to handle her emotionally fragile niece. Gemma is an engineer and toy designer working on increasingly advanced toys. Gemma has been working on a prototype for M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android), and she uses M3GAN’s artificial intelligence technology to pair her as a personal companion and protector to Cady. Of course, deadly consequences and creepy hijinks ensue.

M3GAN is very slow to get started. There is a lot of set up to get to the murderous doll on the loose, which is what we all came for. The movie takes its time to establish Gemma’s job, Gemma’s lack of personal life, Cady’s transition to living with Gemma, and Gemma’s difficulty fitting Cady into her life. It takes too long when all we really want in this demented doll to start creating mayhem. I didn’t time when that actually occurs, but I definitely was getting a bit restless. Honestly, we’ve seen this movie before so let’s just get to the action, okay?!?

Secondly, the best parts of M3GAN are already revealed in the trailer. They are still good in the context of the movie, but they lose some potency and surprise because we’ve already seen them. Nevertheless, the visual effects are fun and the performance of Amie Donald, who physically portrays M3GAN, is really good. She moves in a creepy way and the dancing is hilarious. There are also some one liners delivered by M3GAN that are both funny and ridiculous. I only wish the movie overall was funnier. It’s a silly concept and it doesn’t take itself too seriously, but it is all very predictable, but never is it scary.

Ultimately, M3GAN is a good time at the movies. If you’ve seen these movies where inanimate objects take on a demented life of their own, then you’ve seen this one before. However, there are interesting aspects like the visual effects, some lines and the performance of Amie McDonald – but it’s not scary, if that’s what you want. Since some of the best moments are spoiled by the trailers, I’d only suggest a matinee viewing to start off your weekend. Just a bow of popcorn is enough.… Expand

Amie Donald and Jenna Davis were an amazing duo as M3GAN with Amie's creepy, cool, robotic movements and Jenna's sweet, eerie, somewhat monotone robotic voice just made M3GAN both so welcoming and menacing; they gave exceptional performances. Violet McGraw and Allison Williams performances were great. The writing was outstanding; loved how the movie leaned into the campiness and absurdity, the balance of comedy and horror, the satire with the idea that A.I. could ever replace replace humans and human interaction, and the few heartfelt moments between Gemma and Cady. The use of practical special effects like the mask and hands and minimalist visual effects used to create M3GAN were phenomenal. The costumes especially ones wore by Amie Donald were excellent. M3GAN was lots of fun and one of my favorite horror movies I've ever seen.… Expand

I think it’s a pretty decent movie . I went in expecting a mindless fun slasher horror. Instead, I got a character drama with horror elements and a dash of comedy, that brings up themes of dependence on technology (which I can relate to) and parenthood (which I can't). The only downside is that the movie sticks to a lot of Hollywood cliches, both in terms of the depiction of engineers and in terms of horror tropes.

Still worth watching though. With a runtime of 102 minutes, it's refreshingly short compared to a lot of the epic-length 2.5+ hour movies we've been getting recently.… Expand

M3gan is a smart robot doll with its own operating system, just like Chucky in the latest version of the movie (see Child's Play). AlthoughHorror movie released in 2023. M3gan is a smart robot doll with its own operating system, just like Chucky in the latest version of the movie (see Child's Play). Although the movies are very similar to each other, I liked it.

As for the plot, a family has a car accident. Only their little girl survived the accident. They put the girl in the custody of her aunt. This woman is also a smart toy designer at a toy company. As the little girl is embittered, she develops the prototype she's already working on and designs an intelligent robot that will both be her companion and break sales records. This toy girl has a self-development feature. This feature is connected to the instinct of protecting his best friend, his daughter, over time.

I like the toys created in these kinds of movies more. Except for 1988's Chucky.

Some scenes in the movie are accompanied by great music. Megan accompanies the music with her dances.

I can take over the world with an M3gan and a Chucky

There are no nudity or sexually explicit scenes.… Expand

This movie was so cool! I have been waiting forever to see it, and it was great. M3GAN was hilarious and scary at the same time. The doll was creepy but so sarcastic and had great graphics. I am so glad that I went to see it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. the movie is too short and felt rushed, it could have been much longer. I liked how charismatic m3gan is. I liked her interaction with the girl and how she evolved into a killer, these are such character development that of course, could have been more exploreted if the movie lasted longer. I just hope If there's a sequel, it'll be much darker and with a higher age rating, because i didnt like how the horror tone was turned down because the producers wanted it to be Teen rating. It was fun to watch, if you like themes involving sci-fi, rogue A.Is and killers dolls you will definitely like it, but don't expect a bloody horror movie.… Expand

An excellent horror/scifi movie. In the style of the Dark mirror series. The story is certainly simple but it's very effective in delivery. It tried very hard to keep it grounded. After spending the last five days glued to CSPAN to listen to two ladies call out the names of 434 members of the House, sitting down to watch a horror movie about a creepy doll with boundary issues with four close friends and one not so close friend and her date felt like a reprieve. M3GAN first hit my radar late last year when it was clear that it had been ruthlessly held back by its production company Blumhouse through no fault of its own, potentially to deny all of us footage of a 4 foot animatronic doll dancing a vaguely TikTok dance before spearing someone with an office supply like a samurai. After having seen this movie in its entirety, I can attest that M3GAN delivers on all of its promise as the awkward, middle school, uncanny doll movie you did not know you needed to see.

How much of this movie, I can hear you asking yourself aloud right now, is the lead up to the moments before M3GAN dances the TikTok? And to that I say, very little, thankfully. You do not need to wait long. Just long enough to know that Gemma (played by a radiantly awkward Allison Williams) is quite bad at parenting, like bad enough that it hurts. The way she grips her collectible toy box so strangely and cuts the packaging open with a box cutter which is haphazardly stored in a low shelf in the living room is so cringe that it’s hard to look away. One of the great crimes of this movie is we never get to see what the toy “actually does.” We simply have to believe that it is awesome, as awesome as the Furby knockoffs that are sold in all their gummy glory by the toy company, Funki, that Gemma works at.

The movie does a neat thing by flipping the evil doll tropes on their head in certain ways. The central anxiety of this movie, at least at first, is not so much working through trauma by attaching unhealthily to an inappropriate “transitional object,” but rather the millennial fear of nonconsensually becoming a parent and having someone refuse to use the coasters on your nice big girl furniture. Later the movie is about that first thing, the psychology whatever with the dead parents, but at first it’s all about the horror of having a house guest you didn’t ask for who refuses to take off her shoes when she enters the house.

Most of the scares are, in fact, related to how unnaturally M3GAN moves and also the way in which she can sneak up on you in literally any place at any time of day, but also her stupid big eyes that never close. If I ever design a super strong robot toy for transferring all of your unhealthy fears or desires, I am going to make sure that it closes its eyes a lot. Like, maybe more than is normal, like a narcoleptic old man on a warm, cozy day who’s just had a nice warm glass of milk. Friends were scratching their heads over why, with access to all this tech, someone would make a children’s toy first and not an… adult? toy? But then these are the same Friends who debated with me who would be the best person to murder on the drive to the movie, so their judgement is poor and they don’t read these reviews anyway.

The final confrontation with its strains of surrogate parenthood mixed with betrayal of a friendship which predates even Cady and M3GAN’s interactions is a nice–dare I say subtle?!–twist. You get hints of it from the final family dinner, in which Gemma and M3GAN exchange silent looks over Cady’s insane lack of self-awareness about putting **** water glasses on their proper coasters for the umpteenth time, neither willing to remind Cady while navigating a tricky conversation about death and misfortune.

On the issue of death and misfortune, the fact that no animals are graphically done in is a credit to the taste of the producers. The violence in general is surprisingly restrained considering the potential for shock factor gore. One of hte detectives who interviews Gemma after a particularly gruesome death laughs at the details of another–err–particularly gruesome death, giving us permission retrospectively to find humor, mayhaps even joy, in the deaths of others, especially because so many of the victims in this movie are complete ****

The boy straddling the doll after taking her shoe deserves what he got. The movie understands that even a small nod to the nonconsensual sexualization of a girl doll needed to be done and needed to be done in such a way that would be both tasteful and properly punished. And actually, the heart-to-heart that M3GAN and Cady have afterwards is oddly sweet. M3GAN’s mean girltalk offered as a way of allaying Cady’s existential fears of death and afterlife while also pumping her up to take absolutely no **** from any boys is heartwarming and terrifying!

There was not as much dancing as I would have expected, considering her dancing chops, but that is a small criticism of an otherwise excellent movie, which I would add to any list of self-empowerment horror films I would show to young kids, along with Jennifer’s Body and Heathers.… Expand

I love horror films, but it's difficult to find one that really frightens me. I had great expectations for this movie and walked in expecting to be terrified. It uses and abuses certain horror film tropes in the service of a semi-serious discussion of parenting issues and the potential of AI to warp our minds, especially the minds of young people. I was very impressed with Allison Williams as the nerdy woman thrust into the mother-protector role against type. M3gan's animations were simply splendidly eerie. There are no buckets of blood and nobody sympathetic dies in this film. It admirably marches a narrow path among genres such as sci-fi, dramedy, family failure, and semi-horror, with as many comedic swipes as thrills and chills. Definitely worth the price and the time to watch.… Expand

This movie is no more than It tries to be. It's shallow, fun, camp and an entertaining watch. Eager to hopefully watch a sequel in the future, should one come out.

Surprisingly funny mixed with legit thrills and a doll with major moves. And good casting though I don't know if Allison Williams is capable of not smiling out of the corner of her mouth.

Although it feels like the horror-spoof genre has overstayed it's welcome, the almost immaculate mix of horror and comedy makes it seem like maybe there's a bit left to squeeze out.
