I can see why people hate this movie, it’s corny, dopey and they want something new, yet at the same time we need one of these movies. But it’s so hard to hate the Coopers, what were you expecting really? The film is a wacky big hearted eccentric blithe with gripping characters that you just love them so much and give them a big hug. Even though the cast is wasted here, they do a good job playing their characters. Charlotte Cooper (played by Diane Keaton who looks like a ghost in this movie) and Sam Cooper (John Goodman) are a long time married couple who been married for 40 years, who hold their Christmas Eve family dinner but not told them they were about to separate. Alan Arkin plays the grandpa, he is ticked off because his favorite waitress (Amanda Seyfried) at Pamela’s Cafe is leaving. Marisa Tomei is Charlotte's younger sister, despising her because her parents loved Charolette more because her life crap and Charlotte’s life was perfect and happy, she tries to get her something expensive, so she gets arrested for shoplifting, and chats with a stern officer (played by Anthony Mackie). Olivia Wilde and Ed Helms are Charlotte and Sam’s grown up kids. Helms plays Hank, he is out of work and trying to be a single parent and get through the divorce with his ex-wife Angie (Alex Borstein). Olivia Wilde plays Eleanor, she feels she’s unloved and hates when people kiss in public or show affection. So she meets an solider (Jake Lacy) at an airport on leave, whom both actors have bona fide chemistry with one another, also is amazing. June Squibb plays the aunt, who saves the film. SPOILER ALERT! Steve Martin is the voice of the dog Rags, who is narrates the story also has a couple secrets of his own. 3/4 stars Expand

I expected a stupid, slapstick, family "comedy" with lots of crude jokes and pratfalls. Wrong! I really enjoyed this movie! I found myself getting very involved with the individual stories of each family member. This is not a horrible movie. The story I was least interested in was the line involving Ed Helms. It was not memorable for me. The plot line with Olivia Wilde was probably the most engrossing, but Marisa Tomei's story was pretty cool too. The thing I cared least about was the story involving Diane Keaton and her husband John Goodman. It was horribly contrived and not believable at all to me. It is not "The Family Stone" for sure, but it is better than. Any other Christmas family movies. Expand

A strange yet quite enjoyable film with great stars that make up the dysfunctional yet oddly realistic Cooper family with John Goodman and Diane Keaton effectively portraying the patriarchs in this existential but familiar movie!

Sure, the humor is cliché and slapstick, and the story can be slow and dull at times, and the acting may be average, but the movie taught a very good message and was fairly emotional, and at times caught me shedding tears. It was a very toasty, and cozy movie. But, another problem I have is the syrupy and cliché ending. Other than that and a few other already mentioned cons, this is a great film and deserves more respect. Expand
