Frankly beyond addressing the theme of a gay main character and the obvious message of inclusion, Love, Simon is a coming of age film that offers all the basic elements of any other teenager film.

That is not necessarily a bad thing but I think the film could have gone deeper into other elements, especially because besides the fact the character is privileged, he never seems to face a really difficult situation, yeah he was exposed which is a terrible offense but excluding the mockery that occurs in the school cafeteria, the world around him seems to be completely fine with it and they accept him without any problem and although it should be that way, we really know this doesn't always happen.

The film is worth it, though is not memorable. I applaud that is giving space and inclusion to LGBT community characters as protagonists because I understand that for a lot of people it's something really important but in the end the film is more a romantic story and an acceptance story and truthfully all those stories should be universally equal because I don't think a gay couple loves more or less or different therefore it's still relevant but doesn't offer anything more remarkable or transcendental.

Much has been made about the fact that this is like a regular teen romance, except with a gay protagonist. I have to disagree. It's still a "coming out" movie, just with a softer touch. It's still a "coming out" movie, just with a softer touch. Nick Robinson (who's been catching flack for being a straight actor) plays the basically well-adjusted teen with loving parents and supportive friends. His secret struggle involves an email correspondence with another closeted student. He spends much of the movie searching (and fantasizing) about who it might be. When he's outed, things get predictably complicated. The approach is in line with most teen flicks, but lacks interesting dialogue, comic moments or fun characters (except the drama teacher). It's ultimately positive and does have some heartwarming moments, but breaks no new ground for gay adolescents or teen flicks. And for a film that's all about inclusion, there are no Asian or Hispanic characters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. liked this movie, mostly. it was slow to rise yet did eventually rise with added conflict. the first part of the movie was boring and not as funny as some of the reviews would suggest. but once it rose it was a very nice experience and the music helped a great deal. i had no idea the younger sister had anything to do with food, not until the end but i missed the first 5 minutes. the biggest problem for me was the end of the film. the whole thing with riding the ferris wheel and waiting to see if the mystery lover showed up was too corny for me. maybe because i am older and it was meant for a younger audience. yet the biggest problem in the movie was that the guy who was blackmailing Simon suffered no repercussions. Simon's friends were more mad at Simon and for good reason yet never seemed to get mad at the other guy. at the end of the film they were making it seem the blackmailer was almost an ok guy, really? i am sure he would do the same thing again and again and at the next opportunity. that left a bad feeling for me. i liked the film yet, no one was accountable for anything in the end. While everybody is sucking this movie's dick, I can tell you one thing...
This movie isn't worth the watch, the script sucks, the plot is awful, and the music choice is bizarre. I'm not homophobic in any way, so even don't even dare accuse me

The horrendously blatant product placement is enough to induce sickness as well but there's enough heart here to make the film at least stand on its own two feet I guess. Split on rating this a 5 or 6 but I'll be generous. Expand

While still a nice story and decently acted, it is trying way too hard. It has none of the substance, subtlety, reality or beauty that other films of the same nature have, such as Moonlight or Call Me By Your Name.
