A near-perfect film

Pros: Everything from the casting, directing, acting, screenplay, soundtrack , and story is absolutely superb. This is the kind of movie that anyone (including straight males) can sit and enjoy. It's a feel-good, family-friendly gay teen dramedy with equal parts heart and humor. The most accurate-- and one of the first-- representations of LGBTQ+ youth.

Cons: I really can't think of any cons besides the few changes from the source material. As a lover of the book, "Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda", I can tell you that the spirit, story, and characters in the movie are exactly how I imagined them. While there are a few noticeable changes, the film adds in scenes full of emotional resonance and laughs to supplement them.

Go see this movie so Hollywood makes more of these movies in the future. Representation is key-- so get out there.

Love, Simon is touching, funny, and a very relatable depiction of the struggle of coming out. The American High School drama may seem a little played out these days, but Love, Simon keeps it very fresh. The standard jocks, nerds, dweebs, out-of-touch adults, self-conscious girls and foolhardy boys are all in attendance, but the teenage struggle feels very genuine and real.

Nick Robinson leads as the titular Simon, and he gives an incredible performance. He is a very relatable protagonist, he's charming, charismatic, and deeply vulnerable. Seeing the movie for his performance alone would not be a bad selling point!

The shots are very well done, and the characters are very memorable. I do have a few complaints with the script, and the pacing of the film. Some parts of the film feel really rushed and tacked on, and the script doesn't do a good job of resolving the storyline of the antagonist, and the reveal of Blue was kind of a let-down.

All in all, Love, Simon is a very respectable movie, and one worth checking out.

It's the LGBT movie we asked for. Prepare yourself for some tears, but this time there's no death related, it's only because you know the feeling or maybe know someone who has been through this, or only because you have a heart.

Frankly beyond addressing the theme of a gay main character and the obvious message of inclusion, Love, Simon is a coming of age film that offers all the basic elements of any other teenager film.

That is not necessarily a bad thing but I think the film could have gone deeper into other elements, especially because besides the fact the character is privileged, he never seems to face a really difficult situation, yeah he was exposed which is a terrible offense but excluding the mockery that occurs in the school cafeteria, the world around him seems to be completely fine with it and they accept him without any problem and although it should be that way, we really know this doesn't always happen.

The film is worth it, though is not memorable. I applaud that is giving space and inclusion to LGBT community characters as protagonists because I understand that for a lot of people it's something really important but in the end the film is more a romantic story and an acceptance story and truthfully all those stories should be universally equal because I don't think a gay couple loves more or less or different therefore it's still relevant but doesn't offer anything more remarkable or transcendental.

As an 82-year-old man who came out when he was 12 this is a 'what if' film for me.
“Love, Simon” is one of the best movies about teenagers in high school made for and about them, anyone whoever was a teenager and certainly adults of today. John Hughes made successful movies reflecting on teenagers in high school in the 1980s and though teenagers have some things in common in every generation the 21st Century highschooler is remarkably different.

Adolescents of yesterday tackled puberty, lack of confidence, secrets, parents, first loves, identity, independence, cars and popularity just as adolescents of today do but today they are attached to laptop computers and cell phones. Yes there are still the jocks, mean girls, dweebs, girls who doubt themselves when they can’t get boys to look at them just like the guys who can’t get a date.

What makes “Love, Simon” exceptional is that Simon is everything that others teens are but he is gay. Over the years I have read and heard thousands of ‘coming out’ stories and each one is unique. There are also many myths involving the process, one being that every parent accepts their children for who they are.

This movie is the first by a major Hollywood studio which centers on a gay teenager coming out with all the comedy, drama and romance that involves plus a few risks such as blackmail that can also happen. At 17 Simon is the friend everyone wants to have, the big brother a younger sister looks up to, parents every kid wishes theirs were and, yet, at 17, he hasn’t told anyone he is gay.

For those who can identify with Simon and those who may not know what someone who is ‘different’ goes through during their teens in high school I don’t want to say much more about the insightful screenplay by writers Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker and the direction by Greg Berlanti who handles an understated scene between Simon and his mother while all 3 have a few missteps like two characters having too much screen time plus taking up time on a school production of “Cabaret” which doesn’t advance the story nor challenge that a high school in Georgia would allow the show to be put on.

Nick Robinson is tall, thin, good-looking, average student and plays a very believable 17-year-old touching Simon while showing the awkwardness of a teenager trying to dance in a show or in his imagination and not succeeding. Jennifer Garner as his mother, Talitha Bateman as his sister are impressive and Josh Duhamel as his father is ‘adorable’! (You have to see the film to understand how/why a grown man can be adorable.)

Alexander Shipp, Katherine Langford, Miles Heizer, Keiynan Lonsdale, Jorge Lendeborg, Drew Starkey, Joey Pollari and Mackenzie Lintz as friends and acquaintances of Simon are all very believable in their roles.

Logan Miller is obnoxious, too obnoxious, as a student who blackmails Simon regarding the latter’s love affair with an unknown Internet gay student calling himself “Blue”. Is Miller’s character written as obnoxious as written and directed or did the director not control him? Another annoying character is Tony Hale as the Vice Principal and makes me wonder if this sort of adult is as visible in many schools. An outstanding scene stealer, in a positive way, is Natasha Rothwell as a drama teacher.

An additional dividend for the audience is trying to figure out who “Blue” is through the screenwriter does through in a red herring regarding him!

“Love, Simon, is a must-see comedy/drama/romantic film that I hope is remembered 9-10 months from now at award time. Movie trailer

It's still a "coming out" movie, just with a softer touch. Nick Robinson (who's been catching flack for being a straight actor) plays the basically well-adjusted teen with loving parents and supportive friends. His secret struggle involves an email correspondence with another closeted student. He spends much of the movie searching (and fantasizing) about who it might be. When he's outed, things get predictably complicated. The approach is in line with most teen flicks, but lacks interesting dialogue, comic moments or fun characters (except the drama teacher). It's ultimately positive and does have some heartwarming moments, but breaks no new ground for gay adolescents or teen flicks. And for a film that's all about inclusion, there are no Asian or Hispanic characters. Expand

Yes, there is an entire subplot involving blackmail that kind of takes away from the whole premise of the film. Yes, the central mystery kind of fizzles into a just "okay" reveal at the film's conclusion. And, yes, the film's world and high school characters don't feel as real as those on display in movies like "Superbad," "Me And Earl And The Dying Girl," and "Lady Bird." But the central elements are all on point. The protagonist, as written and performed, is absolutely stellar and likable. All the scenes involving his internal dilemma are incredibly powerful and moving. And the thematic messages in play here are undeniably relevant. I just feel as though some of the more ancillary elements could have been punched up to make those more central threads even more powerful. But still - an overall enjoyable film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. liked this movie, mostly. it was slow to rise yet did eventually rise with added conflict. the first part of the movie was boring and not as funny as some of the reviews would suggest. but once it rose it was a very nice experience and the music helped a great deal. i had no idea the younger sister had anything to do with food, not until the end but i missed the first 5 minutes. the biggest problem for me was the end of the film. the whole thing with riding the ferris wheel and waiting to see if the mystery lover showed up was too corny for me. maybe because i am older and it was meant for a younger audience. yet the biggest problem in the movie was that the guy who was blackmailing Simon suffered no repercussions. Simon's friends were more mad at Simon and for good reason yet never seemed to get mad at the other guy. at the end of the film they were making it seem the blackmailer was almost an ok guy, really? i am sure he would do the same thing again and again and at the next opportunity. that left a bad feeling for me. i liked the film yet, no one was accountable for anything in the end. You didn’t like Black Panther!? You’re racist!

You didn’t like The Last Jedi!? You’re a sexist pig! You don’t think Wonder Woman should be nominated for an Oscar? You hate diversity!

I’m starting to feel like I live in a world where my real opinions on the new age of progressive blockbusters are being held hostage by those that leverage people’s fear of being called a racist, homophobe, or sexist against them. I mean heaven forbid if instead of getting offended and recklessly labeling someone, they actually consult their own ideas and explore them in a constructive conversation!

So, let me clarify: I don’t have a problem with the new age of blockbusters that are sending messages of equality, empowerment, and diversity, I have problem with the lackluster delivery of those messages. This is precisely why I love Greg Berlanti’s Love, Simon. It isn’t a film that demands to be called a classic just because of its progressive ideas on sexuality. It actually earns your respect and admiration with the care it puts into the parts that drive its message home. It’s a movie that’s hilarious as it is heartfelt, has a story that moves at an immaculate pace, and features fully realized characters that you’ll remember long after you’ve left the theater.

The Plot: Simon is a high school senior with a good head on his shoulders and everything going for him -- he has a happy family, loyal friends, and is all geared up and ready for college. But he has a secret that’s been eating at him since middle school: he’s gay. Having only one year left of high school, he wants to keep his “normal life” before coming out and truly being himself in college. But then his whole world changes when a boy anonymously comes out of the closet on his school’s social network. Simon decides to connect with him under an alias, and as they bond over their situation, they eventually fall in love. Who is this boy? Will they reveal their identities to each other? Will they come out of the closet before graduation? These are the questions that keep the story moving.

Now I haven’t approached anything near the teen drama realm in years, so naturally, this movie’s style caught me off guard. The color contrast is dialed up, the lighting is bright, and the way in which these characters exchange lines is very on the nose. But after about 5 minutes, I was able to settle in, as the aesthetic matches the feel-good tone of the film.

The Acting: Nick Robinson (The 5th Wave) as the everyday teen that likes hanging out with his friends, getting coffee, and obsessing over music actually feels very real. There’s a genuine charm to the actor that allows the low-key comedic delivery in his narration to be effective. He’s also able to handle the lows that his character goes through without coming off as overdramatic. The rest of the actors that play his friends are all convincing in getting across that lifelong friendship dynamic with the actor, and I was very surprised with Josh Duhamel (a “bro” who always came off to me as a stock TV actor), who puts on a shockingly vulnerable performance as Simon’s dad, but what really jumped off the screen at me were all the hilarious side characters. Tony Hale (Buster from Arrested Development) is great as the kids’ awkwardly down to earth principal, but Natasha Rothwell as the defeated but scathingly sassy drama teacher stole the show for me. The film moves at a beautiful pace and manages to be both funny and heartfelt without being sappy. Most importantly, it’s easy to take this ride with Simon through the highs and lows of his senior year because screenwriters, Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, have maintained the original novel’s ability to make his struggle universally relatable, regardless of whether you’re straight or gay. If you’ve ever felt like you’re “holding your breath” because you feel different, alienated, or lost, you will feel a strong connection to this film.

Overall, Love, Simon reminds me of a combination of the humor of Mean Girls meets the coming of age story of a John Hughes film. I understand there have been many films that have explored the many issues the LGBT community faces, but the fact that director, Greg Berlanti and co., are able take this tale of sexual self-discovery to the mainstream and make it relatable on such a wide scale is important. I firmly believe this film will go on to educate, empower, and possibly save lives.

When setting up it's premise it immediately and explicitly undermines itself in the opening narration: Simon is a young white man with rich parents who are loving, attentive and quite progressive, he goes to an affluent school with a diverse student body with several LGBT students, he's athletic and not at all an oddball or misfit. And yet the central struggle is his being afraid to come out. This contradiction should give you a good sense of how the film conducts itself with as well as it's estimation of the audience's intelligence: Simon has every type of advantage and his coming out has all the threat of lightly tossing a pillow from 4 inches up onto some larger, more fluffy pillows. Special shout out to the phrase "gay people are the only type of people that need to come out," I'm sure trans people really appreciated that one. Expand

It is a heartfelt nod at classical coming-of-age drama films, with that modern twist that is on point. The music fits the production so well (having Bleachers curate the soundtrack just might be one of the best decisions taken for this project). But there are some great qualities to it. It's sincere and doesn't pander to it's target demographic, it has some great jokes and laughs and an excellent supporting cast, from Tony Hale, Logan Miller, Natasha Rothwell, Josh Duhamel, and Jennifer Garner, and some definite emotional moments that will definitely tug as anyone's heartstrings. There is something universal here and that is very important when it comes with acceptance. However, as much as many would love to continue on praising this film for how inclusive it is, lead actor Nick Robinson, while not terrible, is more passable than outright amazing and could have had better direction, because there are emotional scenes where Robinson is supposed to match those big emotions, but he never delivers. This also adds to some flat cinematography and shot composition, and there is the cliche during the second act low point where everyone hates the main protagonist, but not only is it trite at this point, it is so unbelievable when we get there as well! Regardless, this isn't terrible but it's not really anything more than just "Yeah that's fine." I get why people will love this movie, and if you do love it a ton then good for you. I totally see it. But if you aren't all that interested in seeing it, then you don't really have to honestly. Expand

Growing up teen drama that shines by it´s honesty and lack of prejudice about the dilemma of homosexuality. A must be seen with open eyes, ears and mind jointly by parents and kids. One of best choices of spring 2018.

Two, it doesn't have the tired romance film formula. This film really impacted me because all of my friends are either gay or bi, I finally got to be in their shoes. So, it meant a lot to me to see a love story that could relate to them. I also myself am constantly confused about my sexuality and haven't determined what I'm into yet. So, yes this movie meant a lot to me, but that's not the only reason I loved it. It was a story that really needed to be told, we really need more gay movies nowadays about the struggles of coming out. And like I said before it doesn't adhere to the typical romance formula and I'm tired of seeing the overabundance of straight couples in movies and television. Love, Simon is the film we really need right now to help closeted gay kids and to help people become even more accepting of homosexuality. It's the film we really need and it's a fantastic film. Although it is a little risque I believe that everyone needs to see this film. A Expand

While still a nice story and decently acted, it is trying way too hard. It has none of the substance, subtlety, reality or beauty that other films of the same nature have, such as Moonlight or Call Me By Your Name.

I've seen a lot of reviews comparing this movie to John Hughes but the difference is this movie is not angsty; It's pure sugar. And I don't mean it in a bad way, feel good movies are the best! I was really worried this would be a really preachy after-school special type movie but the trailers convinced me and I am happy to report it focuses more on entertaining that nailing a point down. I can also say I think anyone can watch this movie and enjoy it because there are universal jokes in this. Of course, it had some faults like all coming of age movies do (cough cough nobody in the movie is a teen cough cough) but I really don't fault it for that. .The genre is the genre. And I still highly recommend this movie but I had some beef with some of the reactions. Some things that shouldn't be forgiven were quickly forgiven and some things that were forgivable, weren't, and I was just watching like whaaaa??? If you've seen the movie, I have some thoughts. But yeah, this movie is making history because it may not be the first movie of its kind, I have no idea, but it is the first one a lot have access to. And, I think it's a great, fun, movie that I'd be happy to rewatch anytime because, like I said, it's sweet at its very core. It's not a hard watch and for that reason and the historic element, I'm pretty sure this will go down at least as a cult classic? P.S. I Wanna Dance With Somebody has been stuck in my head ever since seeing this movie. Expand

Love, Simon

It scores majestically on little aspects like the tone of a college or a daily routine of a teenager or the accuracy of the conversations written with different equation and chemistry depending upon the relation. And even though, it goes into similar places as a normal "teenage" feature does (keeping it light and breezy), it doesn't flinch on projecting the dark political side of it too. The adaptation by Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker isn't smart enough to breed the crisp out of it but it definitely doesn't keep it raw or undercooked. Greg Berlanti's brilliant execution skills is what helps one sail off this feature safely and smoothly to the shore. And if anything that itches all the way down, is the performance which could have been a lot better but instead settles on mediocrity. Love, Simon is an innocent love letter to the teenagers struggling their way across road, told in as much as twisted and gripping way possible to bedazzle the audience.

Personally I felt it was a great experience that identifies the passionate side of us all and gives the viewers a person to cheer for despite their stupid, stupid mistakes. He decides to live out his grade schools years without telling anyone until he sees an anonymous post on social media from someone at his high school with the codename, “Blue”, who is also gay. The two engage in anonymous correspondence over the course of the semester. Meanwhile, Simon tries to navigate high school, deepen friendships, and fight off bullies all while trying to keep his secret a secret. Nick Robinson, the actor who portrays Simon, is able to make Simon a loveable character and bring the audience into Simon’s world by being charismatic and endearing. The movie does not make Simon’s character only revolve around his being gay. We are able to see much more into Simon’s life with friends and family, as well as, his personality. This allows the audience to connect to Simon regardless of their sexuality. It is easy to relate to him because of the fact that he is just trying to find the courage to tell the truth about something. Everyone has experienced being in an awkward situation with friends or having to confess something to a parent, before and these kinds of scenarios are all throughout the scene making it hard to not find something in common with Simon and his life. Watching this film takes anyone back to their high school years, but also enlightens older viewers to the lives of students in the age of technology. This film checks all the boxes of the perfect romantic comedy. In Simon’s attempt to figure out who the anonymous “Blue” is at his school, he works through believing that he has figured out the identity of Blue then realises he was wrong, then “figures it out” again, and realizes he was wrong until he finally finds the guy and they live out their happy ending. This mimics the classic --boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back -- plot of heterosexual romantic comedies. This film is well rounded. It has funny moments. It has its heartwarming moments between Simon and his family. Then, it has its sad moments. Yet, the film does have slight downfalls. For example, in one scene, it seems as though Simon’s friends overreact about something Simon did. Actually, after a second thought, that may just be a portrayal of how teenagers let their emotions cloud their judgement. There also did not seem to be enough justice against the antagonist after he did something irredeemable. Though, overall, the writing and the acting from the cast made Love, Simon an enjoyable watch. He had a funny yet awkward personality on screen that made him relatable and easy to like.“Love, Simon” is what you would expect out of teen RomCom. It’s funny, emotional, awkward, and entirely relatable. The movie revolves around the life of high school student Simon Spier. One thing this movie doesn’t do very well is developing other characters besides Simon. His closest friend Leah, played by Katherine Langford, is given no background information at all. A good thing is that this movie serves as a conversation starter today. The dialogue, characters, and genre of this movie can appeal to any age group. For the time period that we are in, this movie was greatly needed for a vast number of our population. I give this movie an 8 out of 10 for multiple reasons. It is a movie that fits perfectly in with other RomCom’s, but the originality of the plot is what makes it stand out. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Love, Simon is a stunning teen-romance movie, but with a difference.
Starring Nick Robinson as Simon Spier, a high school teenager with a happy home life, a family who care about him and good friends, but he also has a secret and is understandably concerned that if he tells this secret to his family his life will never be the same, and that secret is that he’s gay.
He’s never ‘come out’, never told anyone about it, but he’s known for a while, and when he develops an online relationship with another student from the same high school, who is also gay but hasn’t come out yet, he gets the courage to finally do things he was always afraid to do. Unfortunately, he doesn’t know the identity of the student he has fallen for, apart from his nickname in the emails and chats, ‘Blue’, and the journey Simon takes to resolve all these issues and find out who it is, proves to be funny, life-changing and incredibly touching.
I didn’t know anything about this movie, not even what it was about. I was recommended it by a family member and went into it completely blind. I didn’t watch any trailers or read anything about it, and one of my main praises for the film is the fact that this is a mainstream teen romance movie told from the perspective of a gay man, and this is incredibly rare. But don’t think that is the only reason this film is good, yes a major studio has made a film of this subject, but there are so many other reasons this film is such a beautiful and genuinely incredible movie. It’s extremely well written, very well acted and brilliantly directed.
Nick Robinson gives a stunning performance, painfully real and doesn’t come across as over the top or in any way stereotypical. This is also a major plus of the film, and all credit to the writing and direction that it doesn’t set out to make us feel sorry for the character, it’s just asking us to relate to him.
We’ve all had struggles in life, either at school, work or even dating, we’ve all had to work through things possibly being worried or frightened to tell anyone about it and this is what makes us relate to Simon in this film, we see his struggles and know that even if it isn’t the same situation, we understand the feelings and emotions behind them.
I loved this film for so many reasons. It takes its time, this may be a downside for some who like their teen romance movies to move along, to do the big reveal early then have the rest of the film just move along developing the relationship between the two main characters, Love, Simon doesn’t do this, and for me that was refreshing.
In today’s world, I am sure that everyone has experience in online dating, and this is the heart of this film. Simon has started this online relationship but doesn’t know who the other guy is, he knows its someone from his school and he’s trying to figure out which one it is. There are some great scenes where he is subtly investigating and these scenes provide a mystery to the movie which is so good.
I found nearly every character in this film had realism, you could understand and appreciate everything about them. Apart from, and this is one of my ‘niggles’ about the film, the main antagonist Martin, a kid at the school who does some seriously awful things. I was disappointed by how the movie just seemed to gloss over them and the impact these things have on people. His actions are damaging and traumatise our lead character and his friends, through sly snooping he discovers Simon’s secret and blackmails him and the film seems to just brush it aside, which for me felt wrong and a bit lazy. Martin does get a stern talking to at the end, but I think the film should have paid more attention as to how dangerous his actions were, especially considering how relatable the movie is to real life.
My other niggle is very petty but it is just one line in the film that I thought…’Ummm actually, no I don’t think so’. In the opening montage, Simon says ‘My life is just like yours, except for this one big secret’, and then we see his stunning home, beautiful well-to-do family dynamic and I thought, hold on I’m not sure your life is just like the majority of the viewers. I know it’s a daft ‘niggle’, but this just goes to show how good the film actually is, to find fault in it was so tough all I could comment on is this line at the beginning of the film, and the way the writers dealt with the actions of the main antagonist, other than that, I genuinely couldn’t find fault.
It’s a charming, funny and touching movie with amazing performances and I would recommend it to everyone.

I have not heard of this film or the book series until I first watched the film on July 27, 2018. This film came “out” March 16, 2018. Ever since then I have been a fan of the Simonverse. This is the first film and romantic-comedy drama released by a major studio-20th Century Fox (Now 20th Century Studios after purchase by Disney) with a gay lead. This is the best romantic-comedy drama film I have ever seen and I have seen 100s. Great story, great music, great characters, great actors, great attention to detail, and overall great production. Everyone involved in Love, Simon has shown how amazing they get their job done. I will be enjoying Love, Simon and other Simonverse projects for the rest of my life. Including Love, Victor on Hulu which has been renewed for a second season. Everyone needs to watch this amazing film, so they can understand what other people have to go through to get their love story. Everyone deserves a great love story. This film and the tv show are based off the book by Becky Albertalli, “Simon Vs. the Homo sapiens Agenda”. The book is a great read and I cannot wait to read all of her other books she has written. This world needs to be more inclusive no matter what we believe in spiritually. Expand

Love, Simon was a film released in 2018 directed by Greg Berlanti, based on the novel Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, the author helped in the development of the movie, that's why it is so faithful to the book.

The story is about Simon, he has a completely normal life, he has a good relationship with his family and a lot of good friends too, but he has a big secret, he's actually gay, and then we start to see how he handles having to hide this thing about yourself from society.

Unlike other films that deal with homosexuality, this is not a film where the guy will just suffer; Love, Simon is a lighter film, of course Simon has problems, but they decide to show that his life is not just suffering, he can be happy like anyone else too, and a lot about this film is very palpable, it is realistic , we can understand and sometimes even put ourselves in his shoes.

At the beginning of the movie we found out that there is another hidden gay guy at Simon's school, he posted anonymously on a blog that almost everyone seems to follow, and so Simon decided to write to him anonymously too, and then they started talking about their life with each other. This plot continues until the end as we try to figure out who is the guy that Simon is talking to.

The Simon actor is very good, I couldn't imagine another guy in his role, the dialogues are very good too, there are no extremely forced dialogues like in other teen films or TV shows, but there is something that bothered me, there was a drama made by Simon's friends when something happened, the way they handled it was very strange and exaggerated.

Ultimately Love, Simon is amazing, I'm sad that I haven't seen this movie before, I ended up with a big smile on my face, I highly recommend this movie to everyone, it deals with a very important topic, and it can even help some people to have more empathy. Now I have a plan to watch Love, Victor and I am expecting nothing less than Love, Simon.

It picks up the torch from past superb high school flicks of decades past and does something a little different. It has that little inclusion of something special to make it stand apart from the many wannabe high school films that have come out in recent years. Expand

I'm not gay but as soon as I finished watching that movie I knew I had to give it a 10 out of 10 review. This movie is really sincere and touching all the way, and it has a story that really appealed to me as a 17 year old as well.
