A Buzz Lightyear film that wasn’t really a Buzz Lightyear film.

While the animation and effects were very impressive, the storytelling fell through in a major way. They were definitely able to take some elements from the Toy Story series and transition it to this film to create parallels between the toy Buzz and the “real” Buzz, yet the overall story heavily derails from what Buzz at his core is; an action hero.

Instead of the story being about a grand adventure or stopping a universe-ending evil like Zurg, the story instead resorts to being an overly drawn out version of the “Up” opening sequence. It may have worked with different setups and characters, but not with a character that’s supposed to be an action hero. I get that this film was heavily inspired by the pandemic; with the shutdowns, time moving differently, and everything seemingly passing by as if it never happened, and that can make for a good story. They just chose the wrong setting for it in my opinion.

It could have been a new character and it wouldn't do a difference. In fact, I think the movie would have been better without that reference. Because in terms of scifi story with time travel, it is pretty good. If certain parts are repetitive, it is more an effect of the story. The cat is a fun addition. This is a Pixar movie, so you know you get solid visuals. Good action. The music was a mix bag for me. The sounds effects were strong and I had no problem with the voices over. I give the movie 68%. Disney made a big mistake by using Buzz instead of a new hero. They tried a cheap cashing with nostalgia and alienated Pixar's fan. Do yourself a favour and watch the movie by thinking that Buzz isn't there. You will see a good scifi movie for what it should be. Expand

Lightyear has a big dilemma on its hands. First, because of the people who will judge it for Toy Story, and second, because of the people who will judge it for Pixar. And the film won't do well on either of those fronts.

And one way or another it can be confusing to know what this film is really about - Is it about the toy? Or is it about the reason the toy exists?
Beyond that conundrum - that gets clarified in the first seconds - what remains is an entertaining and poignant film that has the Pixar stamp of superb animation, but which unfortunately also seems to be restrained and pressured not to push the limits of ambition and remain at a point where it fails to elevate the film beyond the ordinary.

Unsurprisingly, the first Pixar film to hit theatres since Onward, after the pandemic worst moments, is one that was clearly made with the genuine intention of making a lot of money from a very recognizable character, but as I said, that's also a double-edged sword that exerts enormous pressure on a film that's good and genuinely fun, but is up against the anticipation of an audience that expects it to be a masterpiece.

It was pretty lame if it didn't stand out to me (okay the crystal formula and crystal was pretty cringey, but meh). I think the weed helps. Animation was fine. Chris Evans was fine (though I did miss Tim Allen a bit; he brought the Kirk vibe to Buzz in Toy Story for me). I really liked Uzo Aduba. Dragged a little in act 2, which I'd where the 6 comes from.

The animation is always up to the task, but the screenplay could have used more work. My main frustration with the film is the ‘fool’ character introduced in the second half who continually makes terrible mistakes that nearly get the entire team killed. If this had happened once I would have blown it off as character-building comic relief, but it happens so often that the entire plot comes to rely on it for inciting incident. Also this character offers a lot of sarcastic/bumbling comic relief that wasn’t necessary in a film that was doing fine in the first half with a more story driven, sincere approach to humor (see: Sox). All that said, I do like the concept of the film and appreciate the hard work that went into it and still feel there is a lot to like here. Expand

Ignoring that, the film is a pretty straightforward and fun adventure film that I can definitely see kids enjoying. It's got the Pixar charm of amazing and beautiful animation with a stellar score from Michael Giacchino. The voice over work is okay, there are some scenes where I feel the actors aren't properly conveying the emotion of the scene well. It also suffers from a weak story, bad writing and not very likeable characters. It's not as bad as people make it out to be but it's definitely not as stellar as it should be. Expand

This however feels like it actually should have been released on Disney+. Very disappointing in my eyes but it’s not as bad as some people claim it is. It’s got elements of the Pixar charm with a VERY fun side character in Sox. Sox is honestly my favorite part of the movie and the only character that made me laugh when the movie wanted me to laugh plus the animation here is great. The film looks gorgeous the entire time especially the space scenes. While I do miss Tim Allen as Buzz, Chris Evans does do a good job at making the character feel similar but adding his own charm to it. None of the performances here are bad but the characters other than Buzz aren’t very good. They have very little to almost no character development and are kind of just blank slates standing around waiting for development that just never comes. I can only name maybe one slight personality trait for the side characters but other than that, I couldn’t tell you what their goals or motivations are. The only side character that I liked is written out at the beginning of the movie after a great little fast forward in time scene. The story and villain are honestly the weakest parts for me. The story is surprisingly bland and basic for Pixar standards. It feels half baked and half formed. The foundations are there but the actual structure itself is weak and wobbly. The villain goes into spoiler territory so I won’t say much but it’s BAD. The villain honestly sucks and the reveal about the villain is just the worst. We don’t get any development with the villain and they are just there at points even though they are screaming that they are important. Even the music from the legend Michael Giacchino feels underwhelming as well. Honestly, you can probably pass on this as this doesn’t really contribute that much to the Toy Story franchise at large. "Lightyear" was... Mid. It just feels like your basic run-of-the-mill space adventure movie. You could remove any elements of "Toy Story" and the character Buzz Lightyear, and the movie would still work.

On top of that, there’s not a whole lot going on in this movie: Everyone is just kind of shuffling around until the last third of the film and it undercuts all the things it's trying to do/say. It tries too hard to look realistic in it's animation when it could have gone for a more stylized approach (this movie could have taken notes from "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" in that department).

The cat character was kinda fun but that’s to be expected from the usual silly/quirky character that is almost always included in Disney-Pixar movies. If you have young kids, they will probably like this movie, just make sure your phones light setting is low so you don’t disturb others when you decide to turn it on to kill time 5/10

Pointless film when it has nothing to do with the REAL Buzz Lightyear who is actually a deranged toy - that is his USP. Poor and predictable lead character surrounded by even more dreary characters. The usual political inserts (not a fan , even if they align with my own views) that have no business in a film of this kind (or at least what it is trying to be).
At least I managed to stay awake, unlike the Turning Red experience (soooo bad). Sox was the only high point although he was more like a character from Looney Tunes in relation to what he pulled out of his bag of tricks. It's just a shame that Soul wasn't their last film, the last two would hardly be regarded swansongs.

Toy Story 1/2/3 > Toy Story 4 > Lightyear

CONS.
1. I hated the ending, with Zurg.

2. They changed the character's voice artist because he likes Trump, then said it's because he's not the toy but the actual character... which makes no sense at all. Unless they're saying that they hired another actor (in that universe) to do the voice for the toy?

3. There are multiple characters now called Buzz Lightyear. There's Toy Story Buzz and Lightyear Buzz. They aren't the same person. They look similar, but they have different voices. It's confusing. Not in the sense that I get mixed up, I just don't want to have multiple characters like that. Lightyear is so far removed from Toy Story, it might as well be a stand alone thing. It's a sci-fi. They just call it Buzz Lightyear to get people in the cinema. As far as sci-fi goes, it reminds me of 1998's Lost in Space. It's silly, Twilight Zone type sci-fi. Not sure if that's what it was going for.

PROS.
1. I like cats.

2. I like sci-fi.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It Didn't Feel Like A Buzz Lightyear Movie.

The Buzz in this movie doesn't resemble the character in the Toy Story Movies and BLoSC show in characterization. But my main gripes are in the abandonment of continuity. Buzz is introduced in the original Toy Story movie saying "I protect the Galaxy from the Evil Emperor Zurg, sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance!", which this movie doesn't line up with AT ALL. And Toy Story 2 establishes Zurg as Buzz's father, as a narrative pastiche, which again, is abandoned. And none of the movie is in line with the canon established by Buzz Lightyear of Star Command.

It was a well-executed fan-fiction, but not even close to resembling what I (or, I'd wager /most/ BLoSC fans) wanted. If you switch out the names and changed Buzz's face, it would be... fine. As a standalone sci-fi movie, it was watchable.

But my disappointment outweighs that by a lot.

+Great digital art style

-New characters bring little to the table
-Weak storyline

This shouldve been a slam dunk for Pixar but sadly the idea is tarnished by the noticeable lack of Tim Allen and a weak screenplay that lacks any sense of fun by the space rangers concept being taken far too seriously.

Gone is the tongue in cheek throwback to the humour of children's Saturday morning flash Gordon inspired serials and instead welcome the uninspired woke-ness of the 2020's writing team and from the start of the movie get an emasculation of the titular character who is quickly overshadowed by his overpowered lesbian black Mary Sue counterpart. Things do not improve and it just feels hollow and shows to be a complete waste of the fantastic original source material. Just shows how awful the state of play is in woke Hollywood.

Not cool, Disney. Not cool. If you think your woke crap is actually fun to watch, it isn't. The movie itself is enjoyable for one watch, but it's pretty underwhelming for Disney/Pixar. Maybe if they didn't focus so much on woke crap then they would have made another great film, but nooooo. We have to have wokeism here. What does stand out as superb is in the 4k version. The colors are absolutely beautiful on a nice OLED screen, and the HDR/lighting/contrast is just amazing. Disney/Pixar films do look incredible in 4k on a OLED (not a regular 4k LED). If you can get past the woke crap in this movie there is a decent film to be had, but you'll probably not watch it ever again. 6.5 for the movie, 0 for the woke filth smut that exists here. Averages out to be a 3.25 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It starts quite nice, but suddently lose it's way completely. 2 totaly pointless characters that has a lot of screen time for cheap jokes. There is no climax. There is no story tension. Buzz character is flat.

-Spoiler session-

.
.
Buzz initial issue is to deal with duty at the expense of his own personal relations, which the movie defends it IS life itself. That is an interesting motive, but is tossed aside quickly and replaced just with "your excelence made you arrogant, you need to correct that". Izzy is presented as his possible answer, "we are not good yet, but we can learn". At some point, he is almost forced to remember he was not always excelent and he explains it. If we could watch that instead of listen, that could lead to a great storyline if followed, but is washed away.
Buzz final choice which leads to victory against the villain, giving up the one thing he had spend all his life persuing was presented as just a mere detail on an action scene.
Izzy also has an interesting issue with space but the movie just pass over her resulotion like it was not a big deal at all, just as Buzz resolutions.

That plant vine presented at the start is pointless. Granny and that other guy are useless. Sox was a nice source of good jokes but also used as an all purpuse plot story solution regarding the tech mumble jumble.

It feels like all the effort was placed on the start of the movie, that it was carefully planned, Buzz's used as a tool to present his friend's life going on and then they realized there was an hour of movie yet to make.

I honestly don't know how a movie like *this* managed to get Andy to love Buzz so much.

I view this film in the same vein of all of the Disney direct to VHS cash grabs from the 1990's. I can't believe this even made it to theaters. There is a pretty good twist, unfortunately that doesn't make up for all the film's other shortcomings.

This is supposed to be the film Andy watched that the Buzz Lightyear toy was based on?
Yeah, I don't see it...
This film is a snoozefest.
The animation is ok, but generic Pixar at this point. It wants to be a film like Ridley Scott's The Martian or Nolan's Interstellar, but it doesn't work with Lightyear. Similar to Dr.Strange 2, the tone is a mess. Going from serious in the first 1/2, to extremely goofy at times. The characters range from boring to unlikeable. Compare to the TV show, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, it had likable characters, a good balance between these two tones, and both actors who VA Buzz in that show do a great job. The film also misuses Imax. I noticed no big advantage that other films Top Gun Mavrick and JW: Dominion used extremely well.
Honestly, your better off skipping this cashgrab of a film and with the TV show, and I came in without expectations other than just wanting a good Pixar Film. At this point, why did I expect something better when this is the same studio that came out with Turning Red, a C grade Disney film under the Pixar name...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Buzz is my favorite fictional character of all time. So I was very excited to get back in a theater after a couple years and watch this film. It was underwhelming, to say the least. In a nutshell, it left me craving to hear Tim Allen voice the iconic character again. I’m a Gen-Z’er, so I understand Chris Evans *might have broader appeal, however his voice just doesn’t have the crispness and maturity as the original. Some of the side characters were interesting, but the core characters like Buzz and Zurg were underwhelming, and I thought the Zurg reveal was a disappointing decision. It seems to me that the film tried to do too much rather than just tell a story. Visuals are nice, just wish there were more elements that compliment the Toy Story films. Expand

Expand

This movie isn't terrible. But it's not good. As a comedy it fails. I laughed only a few times, almost exclusively at the cat. Most of the jokes were crickets in my audience and a bunch made me roll my eyes.

As a sci-fi movie it fails. It gives us the most basic child version of several sci-fi concepts stolen from other movies like Interstellar. And if you think for more than a few seconds, so much of it doesn't make sense. There was a cool fight scene and a couple of good action moments, but for the most part I found myself not caring about the action.

The movie does this thing where it keeps throwing a wrench in the plan, creating obstacles that the characters must overcome. This is normally a good strategy and makes any later success feel earned and satisfying. But every obstacle is a result of dumb characters, silly mistakes, or simply being clumsy. This makes it hard to stay invested. When this strategy is executed better, there is a much better reason for the obstacles, such as a really smart antagonist.

Late in the movie, it goes in a direction that I wasn't a fan of. And we get a few ridiculously cheesy moments, one that made me cringe so hard it hurt. The great animation doesn't make this worth watching.

What kind of education you're giving my kids? I Respect the LGTBQ Community, but this is completely different, showing that kind of things in movies will make kids do that kind of things, because that's what kids do, they want to do the same things as in the movie! Sing the songs, eat the same way, do the same things, kids are kids, and they will always do what you show them.

And Corporate Greed and LGTBQ Community want to teach our kids, this is not acceptable! There is nothing wrong to be gay, but to try to educate and tell the kids to be gay!

Remember that for kids watching movies is cool! kids will do what they see its cool, and watching a movie for them it's cool, the characters in the movie are cool, what they do inside the movie its cool and they want to repeat everything they see!!

Again, as a parent! It's my kid's decision to make when they are ready, if they want to be strait or not, we will support them because we love them. But you! Disney! Teaching them to be gay from the day they start watching your movies, it's not OK! This is supposed to be a kid's movie! SHOW SOME RESPECT TO THE PARENTS! Get away from this crazy new thinking and go back to your roots!

Remember all those old great movies that you made that kept all families together. Those were good times.
