It has been almost 30 years since the original Toy Story movie premiered to much acclaim. There have been 3 sequels since that time, and each of those sequels delved into deep and lofty themes like friendship, growth and existence itself.It has been almost 30 years since the original Toy Story movie premiered to much acclaim. There have been 3 sequels since that time, and each of those sequels delved into deep and lofty themes like friendship, growth and existence itself. Now, Pixar has gone back to the Toy Story universe again and presents Lightyear. If I'm correct, Toy Story 4 seemed like an unnecessary, though moderately successful, diversion; and now there's a spin-off that is the movie on which the Buzz Lightyear character is based. Okay... I had to run out and see. Let's see what's beyond infinity.

The initial text of Lightyear tells us that what we are about to see is the 1995 movie that Andy saw that made him want to buy the Buzz Lightyear toy. The movie is about a space ranger, Buzz Lightyear, who is desperately trying to complete a mission he thinks he botched. The more Lightyear tries to complete the mission the more time slips away from him. Lightyear is joined by a rag-tag group of rookie, wannabe space rangers and an adorable "cat" named Sox. Hijinks and space adventure ensues.

There are two related things that Lightyear has to contend with: 1.) why Andy wanted the Buzz Lightyear toy and 2.) how does Lightyear stack up to the other movies in the Pixar filmography. After seeing this, I don't understand why Andy would want the Buzz toy instead of the Sox toy. Sox is the obvious standout of the movie. Sox is cute and funny and smart and memorable. Lightyear isn't really any of that, despite Chris Evans' good performance. As for its place in the Pixar filmography, Lightyear is a nice story to enhance the Toy Story saga, but it doesn't succeed on its own; and, it doesn't reach the heights of the best Pixar movies like Finding Nemo, Up, Inside Out and Soul. It attempts to tug at your heartstrings, but it gets bogged down by the action and space adventure. Although the space adventure stuff is cool, if you don't have a strong connection to Buzz, you probably won't care much.

I think kids will like Lightyear, especially the ones who'll be captivated by the space and pseudo-science-y stuff. It doesn't seem that you have to know a lot about Toy Story to enjoy the movie, but I suspect some appreciation of the originals may be beneficial. On its own, it is fine. The voice cast is very good and have a nice charm. Chris Evans sounds so much like Tim Allen. Keke Palmer is charming as ever in her role. She has a lot of personality in her voice, so they did a good job of casting that part. There's some humor, a lot of action and so, yeah... it's fine as an animated action movie.

Well, Lightyear has its moments. There are good voice performances by the cast, a very endearing character in Sox, and an interesting premise. It fails to deliver on the promise of the story and there isn't much of an emotional hook like most Pixar movies. Nevertheless, it's entertaining enough to keep you engaged for its runtime. I'd suggest a bowl of popcorn for a matinee viewing.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is a really good movie, I enjoyed it a lot, it's funny, entretaining, has a goofy and interesting story. It met my expectations and in some scenes even surpassed them. However, I have some small criticism, is a bit weird that Buzz decides to travel through space and skips years so carelessly and often. Not a big complain, but there's a pregnancy scene that makes very little sense because it was a lesbian couple, I understand if it was a donation or something but I feel like that should've been explained better (I see a lot of people especially hating on this scene and I really don't understand why, I don't think is bad at all, it only lasts for less than 5 seconds, is not really essential for the plot and I feel like it shouldn't have been taken so seriously because it doesn't ruin or even affect the overall movie at all, is just there and I have no problem with it) and the Zurg plot twist is a bit confusing and I feel like Zurg's personality could've been explored deeper, but it's not the biggest complain in the world for me, Zurg himself is slightly relatable and you can understand him enough to feel some sympathy towards him. Overall, these small criticisms aren't that important, they're just stuff I wanted to point out. If you're interested, go ahead and watch it, I promise it will be worth it, especially if you have kids, this movie can be enjoyed by everyone… Expand

I do not often leave reviews but in this case I have to.

NOW ONTO THE REVIEW The film was a pleasant surprise it's gorgeously animated and the voice acting is top notch , It's much darker and more grounded than a lot of other Pixar films.

It's got some interesting science and realistic space physics which is really amazing to see in such a film , it's also full of references both to Toy Story and other science fiction films in general.

It actually feels like this could be a real film in the Toy Story world Including the cheezyness that the Buzz Character always had.

Not Pixars best but seriously not their worse.

I do recommend the film to any fans of Toy Story Pixar and science fiction.… Expand

It's overall a decent movie, the animation is beautiful, and the story is alright. Don't even remember the kiss everyone is complaining about, but Pixar made a Marvel movie with this one and it was pleasant.

Eu imagino os pais das crianças pra explicar como que duas mulheres tiveram um filho kkkk deve ter sido engraçado. Infelizmente o filme se perde partindo pro meio e pro fim fica meio chatinho mesmo mas é tranquilo de ver, principalmente pq o filme é bonito para um caralho sério nem sei como faz uma iluminação tão realista em uma animação. It could just be me, but I get the impression that, in an absolute sense, movies today really are better than those we have understandable nostalgia for. The graphical experience being leaps and bounds better goes without saying. But just as importantly, writers and directors can’t just do more of the same — they have to take every well-worn trope and somehow put a fresh spin on them, or invent new ones altogether. And I swear the dialogue is getting more realistic and dynamic, with characters breaking their own train of thought (or others’ train of thought); the arguments seem so much more raw and genuine, and it’s harder to visualize voice actors just reading off pieces of paper.

Oh: and even though I was waiting for it, I missed the kiss. Probably blinked or turned my head for a moment — it was so brief. I especially like how Commander Hawthorn and her wife were depicted as just another ordinary family, seen raising their children and then grandchildren in an brief, supercut sequence in which Lightyear repeatedly returns to visit at the end of each of his time-dilated journeys around the local star. I struggle to see how those without an agenda coming in would see it as age-inappropriate.… Expand

A visually phenomenal animated movie. Sox is my new favorite animated movie character since BB-8. Chris Evans did a great job portraying Buzz and Zurg was the definition of intimidating.

The movie is great. Forget the criticism from people who haven't seen it. The very dramatic scene lasts 4 seconds and the whole relationship is super well run and feels super natural. What is not a problem is the lesbian kiss scene. For example: It was no problem approx 20 years ago in Buffy and I enjoyed the sweet love story of Willow and Tara. For itself it is a good movie but nowhere near the best Pixar movies. As sidenote I should remark that many other people have a separate rating scale exclusively for Pixar movies. An 8/10 on the normal scale is a weak movie or even (close to) a disaster on the Pixar scale. It is the backstory of Buzz Lightyear and as I said not related to the Toy Story movies or TV show. He and his crew are on an exploring space mission to a far away habitable planet. However not everything goes as planned and so starts the adventure. I am vague here because of spoilers. The story is fine for me but not that remarkable and unique. I have seen similar heroes journeys and also some parts are foreseeable. It might sound too negative as it is by far no misstep except maybe of Pixar scale but this is up to others to decide as I do not use it. It is entertaining enough to be rated as good movie and it is enjoyable. It just does not wow me like the better animated movies or past Pixar movies. The animations are top notch as expected and even critics of the movie should agree in this regard. There are no missteps and I like the style of the movie. The voice actors are good and deliver their roles well. I freely admit that Tim Allen is a better Buzz than Chris Evans even as huge Captain America movie fan. However he is neither incompetent nor bad. I say the whole cast does a good job. Overall I think my introduction is also a fine description. While it is not a bad movie it is not “Toy Story 5” or the animated TV show and Pixar while being not garbage is a bit away from its former glory. It is good but not truly amazing. I give a 6.5/10.… Expand

An amazing movie full of spectacle, humor and drama in the right ammounts to keep you glued to the seat and wanting more. Structure is soundly written, characters are rather loveable and payoffs are satisfying.

Splendid animation movie, Give it a chance.
Great CGI (Watch it with a high end tv or in a good cinema), action, fast paced, good humor without being too much, Sox is funny.

It is a product for young adult audience, and so plot and moral can be a little predictable...but it is fun to watch for adult also.
I liked that most of the technology in this movie are somewhat retro futuristic, like it was made in the late 90's.
It reminds me of a "typical" sci-fi movie of that era for tv, and it is a good, nostalgic, feeling.
I didn't have much expectation (in my country it didn't recive much attention) and it suprise me.… Expand

A great watch! Upfront, this movie has nothing to do with Toy Story but it stands on its own quite well. The hyperrealistic animation is incredible and the story is engaging. First of all, anyone who says this film is less than a 4 is being 100% disingenuous (probably because of the LGBTQ, which is a very small part of the film.) This Pixar film is easily one of the top 5 I've seen, and I've seen all of them except for Soul. Maybe top 3. Let's start with the good. It's a beautiful film with great direction and the pacing was great. Now the bad...it was a little predictable knowing who the villain was going to be and the villain changing his tune. But other than that, I really enjoyed it. Lastly, I guess some people were upset that Tim Allen wasn't Buzz. This is completely idiotic since in reality most talking toys don't have the actual voice of the actor. Chris Evans has a very "Buzz" voice and it worked well. Other than that, haters gonna hate.… Expand

This is an enjoyable watch. A nice story featuring Buzz in the film role Andy from Toy Story first saw him in, that led to him wanting the famous Buzz toy featured in said Toy Story films. It has some interesting twists although its not greatly memorable in and of itself. It felt a bit like a long TV show, rather than a particularly good, large scale film as such. It explains the origins of the famous 'to infinity...and beyond' catchphrase. I thought the inclusion of a cat character was a bit random - its kind of sweet but also, as I say, random. I wouldn't say this is great but its not a bad film either - its a pretty ok, reasonably good film of its type, I reckon. I'd recommend it if it sounds of interest, yes.… Expand

Thought this movie and storyline were great. Its a shame that society will rate this low just because there were two lesbians featured for about 3 minutes within the whole film. People need to get a grip.

A movie about Buzz Lightyear but have almost nothing about the background of the character, frankly. Word of advice: do expect the stunning visual imagery but not the storyline. 6/10.

Edit: one day after, i watched the 30+ minutes documentary movie "beyond infinity: buzz and the journey to lightyear" about the highs and lows in the process of making "lightyear", i realized how hard it was to make this "lightyear" buzz distinct from the "toy story" buzz, because...this buzz is a man with a life and not just a toy, the liveliness, the animations (especially buzz's appearance), the stressful 2020 pandemic, etc. i see myself didnt give enough credit to these the behind the scenes, i felt sorry; my rating is now 8/10.
Meanwhile, i have high hope of how the actual origin of buzz lightyear will unfold in the sequel, we did have a sneak peak about buzz's past when he cheered the old guy in the team up by saying: "when i first went to the academy, i was not..you know..good, i screwed up everyday..."; and let's not forget zurg, curious to see that too, you'll know what i mean if you saw the final credit.… Expand

The homophobia from many of the comments below is outstanding! Kind of wild how many people review bombed this movie all because there was one gay character. I loved this movie, my daughter's loved it and so did my husband. It had just the right amount of humor in it to balance the movie. I also enjoyed the message that I took from it.

Lightyear is a very good film. It's not great but it is a very well crafted Pixar movie with some stunning animation. The level of animation displayed here is absolutely incredible. The footage of the landscapes as well as the facialLightyear is a very good film. It's not great but it is a very well crafted Pixar movie with some stunning animation. The level of animation displayed here is absolutely incredible. The footage of the landscapes as well as the facial expressions of Buzz and other characters are so realistic it is kind of scary. Chris Evans does a decent job of replacing Tim Allen and after a while his voice basically became Buzz. I wished there was more of an emotional punch but that relationship with Alisha really got me. The plot is actually rather complicated and some kids might not be able to understand what the heck is going on in the last act of the film. Lightyear in some ways feels like one of the Star Trek films. Michael Giacchino's score feels very patriotic and heroic which I really enjoyed. The 'Infinite MOEtion' cue is stunning. Overall though, it is really well done and entertaining although parents might appreciate this more than kids.… Expand

Every single thing about Buzz Lightyear in this movie was there and respected. I think it's a good movie, but people hated it because it only had homosexuality in one scene
