This film appears to be a quirky comedy, but is actually a dreary drama from film director/performance artist Miranda July. It stars Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins as down-on-their-luck, low-grade con artists who wander around LA trying to scrape up a few bucks with their gawky, closed-off daughter (Evan Rachel Wood). One scam involves a stranger they meet on a plane (Gina Rodriguez) whose presence significantly affects the family. Until she arrives, this bleak family is a downer and so is the movie. It’s trying hard to be quietly peculiar and it succeeds, but at the expense of entertainment. With each tedious scene, I kept hoping for some breakout to make it all worthwhile. Despite a VERY FEW amusing observations, there’s little laughing here…just self-indulgent attempts at being eccentrically off-center. Expand

I really liked the general idea, but I just couldn't follow along with its vibe. Expand

It started out very interesting and something different at the beginning but towards the end got a bit too weird. Maybe I expected something more in style of comedy (which it still was there) but towards the end it got a bit more too boring. It started out very interesting and something different at the beginning but towards the end got a bit too weird. The irony of this film, is that its identity and presentation are everything. If it loses it, it doesn't exist.

And I say this because that's the way the director decided to present it to make an impression.
It's a film based on its quirks to get attention, but without really making an impact.

The film centers on a family who make a living as scammers. These are Robert, Theresa, and their daughter Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood, who controls the entire film).

All three are "weird," but she easily stands out as the true introvert.
It’s clear that the life she has known so far is all she has, because she simply doesn’t know anything else.

Obviously for the story to work, what’s coming is a change of dynamics and this occurs with the presentation of Melanie (Gina Rodríguez).
She represents a seismic change for Old Dolio, both in the way she perceives her parents and the world. However, this is where in my opinion the film makes its clearest flaw.
This is because its comment on the dynamics of family communication is based solely on the way these characters behave.
Therefore, the message cannot be universal. Because the emotional connection with the audience is never guaranteed, because all we see all the time is these strangers behaving in unusual ways.
So, there is a fine line between too much comedy and the true coming-of-age story.

And this is not me saying that Kajillionaire is a bad film, but its functionality depends a lot on how much this family may interest you, this of course given the notable lack of emotional investment.

Because without a doubt, at some time we've all felt completely out of place like Old Dolio, but how many of us live or lived like her, even in the remotest way possible?

Perhaps some of you will find it more rewarding than I did, because ultimately, despite such interesting characters and good performances, Kajillionaire struck me as a remarkably uneven film.

While waiting for the Big One chosen as a symbol of annihilation due to death, is the ascetic approach of anticipated detachment from any bond preferable, or the antithetical hedonistic approach? Diogenes or Epicurus? Miranda July doesn't care to take the question seriously, so she's even less interested in providing a shred of answer. She is content to continue her journey as an indie filmmaker, Sundance-addicted, with the usual predominance of the bizarre eccentric. So the philosophical problem suddenly fades, leaving just a 26-year-old lesbian (otherwise why Rachel Wood?) scammed and robbed by her parents albeit with still a flicker of moral rigor.

Bit of a letdown, it's a collection of awkwardness together. I definitely did not get the deeper meaning of the movie, if there is any. The acting is great, just the story that they're carrying I couldn't be bothered with.
