This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The only part of the entire film that makes sense is the credits. The storyline and script are horrendous. The acting is distasteful at best. Pheonix does try with the script but still he is very contradicting. It shows proof he has this illness, then he acts like he doesn’t, back and forth over the entire film. It’s awful, forgetful, and doesn’t make any attempt of continuing the story from previous installments besides attempting to show his Batman’s parents death which still directly contradicts what has been told since the beginning.… Expand

What a buzzkill. You could hear a pindrop (and a few snores) in my theater. Why bother putting police officers at the exits of this movie when people are yawning on the way out? At a time when we need more compassion and resources towards mental illness, the film shocks the viewer in to out-right fearing it. Sure, maybe that's not the intention, but that's the result. Or maybe it's just a movie about a comic book character and I shouldn't take it so literally. Either way, it's not something I'd recommend to people, and I won't watch it again. In the end, it's just not fun. Go watch one of the many other (superior) Joaquin Phoenix films instead.… Expand

There are some scenes and little choices that make you appreciate the thought that went into this movie, but those moments are scarce and like looking for a needle in a haystack. Phoenix's performance may save this film from getting any lower than it got, but as a Joker fan it's just straight up disappointing to watch. I would not watch it again! It genuinely makes me sad because this movie has a lot of potential but it just fails so spectacularly that it's hard to watch or think about. I like Joker (the character) a lot. Possibly my favorite villain of all time. This movie? Sucks.… Expand

I understood what it wanted to portray. Unfortunately all the numerous great things about this movie didn't helped. The movie didn't need more action, it could have been even more chaotic and confusing, but even as it is, it needed something "violent" or something special at the beginning that would have kept me invested.The IP has so much potential, the movie could have been going in so many directions...
Arthur is not or it is a tragic and very unLUCKY man and that's ok but not very interesting... One important note here is my problem with the conclusion of this story: how is this weak and sick man supposed to be the antagonist of batman or even of a policeman. Such a disappointment.… Expand

I'm definitely burnt out on origin stories lately, and furthermore, I've always liked Joaquin Phoenix as an actor, but I wasn't too sure if he'd have what it takes to get this iconic role just right, something only 'The Dark Knight's' Heath Ledger has managed to do so far in my opinion. After seeing this... I can confidently say that I really could've done without this film. I found myself thoroughly unimpressed with just about every scene, moment, etc. The entire film felt sleazy to a fault, seeming content to wallow in its own filth and misery. In addition, the film definitely seemed like it was short on ideas, which would explain why half the film seemingly consisted of scenes of Phoenix doing nothing but dancing, laughing manically, and acting like a fool. It really felt like nothing more than an excuse for him to act like his usual weird self for two long hours. For those hoping that he'd live up to the hype that he supposedly surpasses Ledger's performance as the Joker, in my eyes, it's no contest. Ledger is still far and out the superior performance. I could tell Phoenix was having fun with his take on the character, but that's about it. Overall, not only did this film feel quite unnecessary, to me, it was also self-pitying and forgettable.… Expand

Glorifying a SuperVillain isnt OK. DCEU is the worst. Its trying to pull strings to keep itself alive. Heath Will always be the best potryal of Joker. Withput the Obvious Glorification.

Great background for the character to develope, sadly, director and writers didn't know what to do when the story needed to keep going. Believe the hype this film is a masterpiece. I've always loved the joker so I was extremely excited and had high hopes for this one. I'm happy to say it was damn sure worth it. I'm happy to say it was damn sure worth it. Joaquin pheonix does the character pure justice. His performance is Oscar worthy. It's a bit slow start and if you go in thinking it's a full blown marvel style action movie you're gonna be disappointed. It's a drama thriller and a near perfect one. If you've seen films like taxi driver or king of comedy you will love this film. I really want to see a sequel but it ended perfectly so I wouldn't mind if it was a one and done film. It's excellent cinema go watch it!… Expand

Nothing short of a masterpiece. There is no point in comparing Joaquin Phenix to Heath Ledger, both had their on take on the character and the movies are vastly different.
But nonetheless, this is one of the greatest performances captured on film.

Supported by an interesting story, good cinematography, a fun soundtrack and an absolutely mesmerizing performance by Joaquin Phoenix, Joker is a more than decent origin movie. It's no masterpiece, but it's worth watching if you're a joker fan.

Problems with uneven pacing, mishandled back story revelations, heavy-handed sociopolitical allegories, excessive narrative elements, violence bordering on gratuitous and plot holes aplenty all conspire to weaken an otherwise-ambitious story aimed at taking the comic book genre in a new direction. What's more, the film features an ending that's out of place compared to the apparent climax that preceded it. And then there are derivative elements taken almost verbatim from a variety of other pictures, including "Falling Down," "Network" and "The King of Comedy," among others. But what's perhaps most distressing is the message the film sends, one that's dangerous, even if accurate in its depiction of the state of affairs in the US today. What this film gets right is impressive, but, unfortunately, there's not enough of that compared the package overall.… Expand

I don't understand all the fuss around this movie : the criticism of our society through its violence etc etc ... It's a take on the origin of a famous villain in comics.. not bamby... what were expecting, the Note Book ! It's a take on the origin of a famous villain in comics.. not bamby... what were expecting, the Note Book ! Yes it takes inspiration of today's news like many movies took inspiration of their present. Is it the movie of the century ? No. Is it a really good movie ? Yes. Phoenix delivers once again (but he's been an amazing actor for a long time !). Todd Phillips came a long way from Very Bad Trip (which was also neurotic and chaotic ... so maybe he was the right director !). The rest of the cast is solid but not a lot of on-screen time (but hey, the movie is about one person).

The script, the music, the picture, there are really no false note ! My biggest thumbs up is to have re-imagined a story many times told in an intelligent way. We all know who is Joker and what he'll be... still, we spend the movie stressed by the built up. Go see it, it's worth it.… Expand
