In my opinion the Joker character has always been dark, and using that role to form a theme around mental health is a very admirable idea. Joker's story falls right into a must-see premise, and the only drawback is the brief 'comic book' moments it was undoubtedly forced to add. The visuals were captivating, but there were some glossed over plot moments. Expand

This movie explains in a clear way, when the wealthy lead people, they no nothing of the hardships felt by those Who have felt the bitter taste of misfortune. Joker But Not A Joke

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Stream to Big Screen. Stream to Big Screen, who? Stream to Big Screen the best site for movie reviews on the internet! Corny? I think not. Welcome back everyone! This week we were able to view the highly anticipated movie, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix. Joker is a standalone origin film of many people’s favorite DC Comics villain. The movie is set in the worst of times in Gotham where violence is rampant, civil unrest is prevalent, and the rodent population is no joke. This movie follows Phoenix as the main character, Arthur Fleck. Arthur is a young man longing to fit in and aspiring to be a comedian but is dealing with a bevvy of issues, primarily mental illness. The film leads us through Arthur’s path to becoming the titular Joker.

While this movie is titled Joker, the theme/takeaway from this movie is no joke. Ultimately, this movie hits way too close to home for American society presently. The bullied, belittled, forgotten person in society deals with mental illness without an appropriate support system, and he has access to a gun. This storyline has become an all too familiar in mainstream media today. For this reason, Joker is a very good conversation piece. But didn’t we come to see a movie based on a comic book? This isn’t what I wanted! Well, this is important to know. DON’T go into this movie expecting a comic book like story or a connection to the comics, other than the name.

With that said, Warner Bros. couldn’t have found a better or more experienced lead actor than Phoenix. Phoenix definitely has practice acting like a power seeking maniac begging to be remembered. I’m looking at you Commodus! From the beginning to the end, Phoenix takes us through every single range of emotion Arthur experiences. It truly is quite impressive. Phoenix’s acting and the movie provide a great feeling of anxiety, not necessarily suspense, throughout. Unfortunately, the director either held Phoenix back or chose to feature too many early movie boring set up scenes. When Phoenix acts his craziest, the movie is epic but there is just far too little of it to get over the boring parts. In a way, I felt deceived by the intense commercials and trailers. We’ve been waiting for nearly a year to see this movie. Yes, the movie provides a few intense moments but far too few. And, far too little of Zazie Beetz! Honestly, they could’ve interchanged her with any actress to do the same thing. Nevertheless, her presence was still welcomed.

And then when I wasn’t bored, I was predicting exactly what was supposed to be a surprise or twist in the movie. I’m not sure if it was the scene selection or a purposeful directorial decision, but at times the same scenes just didn’t make sense when I was watching them. Eventually, my suspicions were confirmed and I just said ,”duh!”

All of that said, Joker delivers in some aspects (I didn’t even mention the great score in the movie) but ultimately will let you down. Joaquin does a good job as the Joker, but he’s never going to be regarded like a Heath Ledger once the dust settles. Try to check this movie out at a matinee time, if your a big Joker/DC fan. Everyone else, you may be disappointed in a matinee price but for a reasonable price it’s worth it or an early streaming rental.

The Stream: Takes unbelievably long to get moving and then supremely predictable.

The Big Screen: Joaquin delivers an uneven performance but worth watching.

The Final Bill: Joker is an overhyped film that will create some conversations about mental health issues in society.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I had always wanted to watch a superhero movie that has absolutely no CGI whatsoever and actually be good. The most iconic villain in the entertainment history had never been given a backstory, so it was necessary to be made as good as possible without actually ruining it (read Catwoman). Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Arthur Fleck is great. You can actually see the painful life he goes through everyday. The way he slowly dances in the bathroom with an eerie music score makes him look natural; something the actual Joker would also do if this happened in Batman: The Killing Joke.
Many scenes in the movie were actually really unexpected. When Randall gives him a gun and tells him to use it for his self defence, it seems as though his friends really care for him. But later he snitches on Arthur, which completely changes our perception of him. Also the way the Wayne Enterprise employees were beating up Arthur on the subway made it feel like a drag initially, because we had understood that he is an outcast having a bad day, but then when he suddenly shoots them all it gives the chills. And of course, the part where Joker shoots Murray on a live show. I was expecting he will kill Murray AFTER the show ends.
And finally the way they ended the movie was also pretty good. Since one of the characteristics of the Joker is that he does not have a definite story, it did make sense that most, if not almost all, events take place in his head, as it could all be considered non canonical if the fans didn't like it. This movie truly deserves the Oscar for both the categories it won - Joaquin Phoenix's acting and the music score.
The only one problem I had with this movie is Joker's costume. I would have preferred if he wore his signature purple suit instead of a red one, since that would have actually been more true to its core. But other than that I was completely good with everything in this movie.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is an outstanding movie. The thing about it is, I went into it thinking "Oh yay! A Batman movie!" Thinking it was gonna be like 'the killing Joke' when this really isn't like any other movie, and it's definitely not like any other comic book movie. If you came to this movie for the Joker, go watch a dark night. If you come to this movie for a drama about mental illness and a stand alone story, then you got it. There really is nothing like Phoenix's acting in this movie either. He really does make you feel bad for Arthur and makes you look at how the world discriminates and I think that's why I give it a 10/10. It's just a masterpiece. Now, do keep in mind this isn't a movie for young to watch either. It is rated R for a reason. It takes on a VERY dark tone. More then movies such as 'The Shining' even. It's not horror or anything like that but it is dark but only because it's so realistic. Expand

Joker takes about 30 different ones when it tries to be part 70s NYC homage, part mental health character study, and part comic book tie-in. It deftly navigates the minefield to make a film that is captivating and thought provoking. The acting and the music were definitely both oscar-worthy. Arthur's transformation is a sight to behold. It's nice to get such a refreshing stand-alone movie that breaks free from the typical superhero formula and isn't tied to a cinematic universe. This doesn't feel like a superhero movie at all; it's a deep character study and a cautionary tragic tale of a man pushed to madness via nature and nurture; it just happens to be set in Gotham around arguably comic's most iconic villain. Phoenix is unbelievable and completely disappears into the role (an Oscar-worthy performance). The cinematography and tone of the movie is great and harkens back to the Scorsese films of the 80s. If you're expecting a superhero action movie this may not be for you. Approach it with an open mind and you'll love it. Masterpiece. Expand

I’m getting this off here BUY THIS MOVIE RIGHT NOW. Ok getting that out I’m going to start here the music is so damn good, it’s so atmospheric and makes you believe that you are in Gotham. The cinematography just God man, the way this movie is shot is so beautiful the way the colors are amazing. Now the elephant in the room Joaquin Phoenix is fantastic he is Arthur Fleck and he is so so so so so so so good, just how committed this man is to playing the Joker is amazing he lost a little over 50 pounds, he researched the iconic laugh which is amazing. People who have played Joker in the past have gone mad going back to Heath Ledger he died after the movie came out, Joaquin almost went crazy because of everything he did. I can’t give this movie enough praise Todd Phillips was best known as the director of the Hangover movies which are comedy’s and directs the best character study I have ever seen. When I first saw the first trailer I thought it was going to suck, then the second trailer came out and I wanted to see it, reviews came out hearing that the movie got a 7 minute standing ovation is crazy then seeing the film for myself I now understand it’s worth it. Just buy this movie right now it’s so worth your money. Expand

La actuación de Joaquin Phoenix es increible pero el guión de esta pelicula es lo que no me convence del todo.
Aun asi la recomiendo bastante.

Todd Phillips, Warner Brothers, and DC come together to create one of the greatest films of the decade, and of the supervillain genre. Supported by excellent performances by the legendary Robert De Niro and aspiring Zazie Beetz, Joker is a beautifully crafted film in almost every respect. Swift writing, haunting cinematography, and a beautifully-written score allow Joker to be one of Hollywood's most well-rounded films in years. Expand

What we see here is the peak of DC, one of the most accurate and tragic and thrilling and best character-studies ever made, a marvelously directed and acted (Phoenix may be better than Ledger) social commentary and deep drama. The origins of Joker are darker than we thought, his monologue in the end pretty much explains how a man like Joker, can born. Perfect film. And if you ask me, that is this better or Parasite, I'd say I love both equally, but Joker is the more Oscar-compatible film and that's why lots of people were surprised by the fact that Parasite won the award. Enjoy both film, praise their merits and appreciate them!

Joaquin Phoenix elevates an underwritten character with a strong showcase performance in this surprisingly hollow and toothless film. Joker works neither as a character study of a sociopath, nor as an adaptation of the classic Batman arch-nemesis.

Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is a refreshing take on the character and was much needed considering how terrible they presented the Jared Leto interpretation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It is just perfect. Pheonix did one of the best comic book character acting ever. The movie perfectly expressed and conveyed how joker was and why joker turned into what he was rather than just saying oh he is a bad guy as most movies did. The story was just phenomenal and perfectly depicts society as it is. The last scene where the city goes into chaos after he murders the tv show host was just amazing, the redemption and the blood smile were just raw and powerful. And yea the Waynes were killed again but it was just amazing. Expand

One of those rare occasions when a blockbuster makes complete sense and is a pleasure to watch from start to end. This is purely subjective, but I'm immensely grateful that there is very little FX and an abundance of stellar acting.

I also believe that the recent uptick in Joker haters is violently unwarranted. When I saw Joker for the first time, I walked out of the theater thinking, "That's got to be one of my favorite movies I've ever seen." I still thoroughly enjoy the film, but I find myself slowly falling out of love with this movie. Believe me, I still think it is a fantastic film. However, I feel that Joker is slowly falling into obscurity as a niche film. I don't see it as a Joker movie, but more a story of mental illness in an unforgiving world. Truly a fantastic movie, and I'm hoping the sequel brings the story back into the spotlight. Expand
