They howeverThere will be inevitable comparisons between Heath Ledger’s Joker in 2008’s “The Dark Knight” for which he won a thoroughly deserved posthumous Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and Joaquin Phoenix’ interpretation in 2019’s “Joker”. They however differ in their raison d’être. Ledger’s Joker was already a villain and showed up as Batman’s formidable foe, and did he show up. Phoenix’ Joker on the other hand gives the origin story, key word "story", of how Arthur Fleck came to be Joker. What makes this movie worth watching is Phoenix’ performance which is nothing short of a tour de force, based on a well-crafted story. Granted, there is violence in the movie, some of which may be over-the-top but it is in no way gratuitous because it makes up an important element of the story. Expand

Movie is like Killing Joke theys show you the story but there is a catch. This sounds weird, but it feels like I'm making a dream dish and more than I but thought on it, taste becomes more delicious. The score is haunting and beautiful, acting is wonderful, themes are sad and dark but real, camera work is beautiful and there were many scenes that made me want to but them on my walls as a poster. It's a great take on mental illness and bullying and how it affects the victim in a suspenseful way fitting for a psychological thriller. The movie draws inspiration from classic films with similar themes like "The King of Comedy". Robert De Niro's casting in the movie is fitting given his role in "The King of Comedy".

Joaquin Phoenix does an amazing job playing The Joker. His performance is extremely flawless and beautiful. While Heath Ledger did a great job with Joker in The Dark Knight, Phoenix's performance is as great as the former, if not even better. Arthur Fleck's a very compelling character, as he goes through a ton of difficult stuff in his life, like bullying and such. He also has a ton of character development as he transforms into The Joker. His struggles also make the viewer want to be thrown into his world so that they can experience how he was treated. The film also works with Arthur's mental illness as it sometimes makes it harder for the viewer to know whether the events he's experiencing are real or not. The narrative also accurately portrays how Arthur's mental health progressively worsens through the film as he begins the movie as a sympathetic tragic person who continuously becomes more violent until he becomes a truly terrible person and a killer. While Arthur's conditions make him a sympathetic victim, his actions are still criminal and the move does paint him as a villain appropriately.

The movie spreads a strong message on hatred, unfair class systems, the dangers of long-term suppression of emotions, abuse towards mental illness, among others with how Arthur is treated by society and his mental state. It also talks about how cruel people can be to others.

Here are a couple of bad things about Although the movie's tackling of mental illness is profound, there are some inaccuracies. Some examples including The pseudobulbar affect, a medical condition that causes people to laugh uncontrollably is a physical disorder rather than a mental disorder. Given his severe declining mental condition towards the end of the movie, Arthur shouldn't have been able to outsmart the detectives. He shouldn't be able to interact with the interviewers after donning the full Joker outfit.

What is the greatest two parts? The famous scene where Joker dances down the step street before he gets chased by the cops is amazing, in addition, the film takes place in at West 167th Street in Highbridge, and another scene where Joker is in a talk show with Franklin, and goes on a joke that society that abandons him and treats him like trash, and threatens him that he deserves him and he instantly kills Franklin is absolutely disturbing to watch.

While the violent moments are infrequent when they do happen, they're intense enough to make the viewer feel uncomfortable with the psychological implications behind the violence.

At the end of the film, we can see Bruce Wayne's family getting shoot by a protester, which it was nice to see Bruce Wayne before he becomes Batman.

It's a very different take on a superhero movie, and it's refreshing to see.

It uses the old Warner Bros. "Big W" logo at the beginning, fitting with the time period this movie is set in.

Unlike other recent DC films that tried too hard to be dark and edgy, Joker manages to be dark and serious by doing it correctly and the dark tone of the film enhances the narrative.

Joker is awesome, and I recommend you to see Joker! :) Hope you like my review! :)

Joker, based on the DC villian, is a drama movie about Arthur Fleck who through a life of hardship becomes the calamity that is called Joker. It is dark, it is brutal and it is a good movie.

Arthur Fleck was dealt the worst hand imaginable when he was born. He was adopted by a delusional, mentally ill woman that had an abusive boyfriend. Other than that, she stood by as this man beat and abused her adopted son... You feel that? That depression? Well now imagine if that kid grows up, becomes a clown while having mental problems, and the city is going through a recess of sorts that cuts the funding of his social worker that prescribes his anti-depressive medication! We meet Arthur when he's already at the edge of falling down, but when he stops receiving his medication and accepts his own emotions towards society's standards, he finally finds himself. And with him Gotham city takes justice in its own hands, becoming sodom and gomorra. What is great, is how we see a very different perspective of Thomas Wayne and the elite class then we are used to from the Batman movies. It is refreshing.

It was an enjoyable watch, with a good performance by Joaquin Phoenix. I give it a 7/10. Though this version of the Joker is interesting, i can't help but feel that Heath ledger's version was more impactfull.

I’ve had the opportunity to watch it twice now, which if you haven’t, you should. Todd Phillips did an outstanding job directing this film, to my surprise. I watched a video where he said that he had the musical composer read the screenplay and make the music based off of that alone. Phillips then made the scenes with the influence from the music, letting the acting and the tone to go with it as well. Genius. Don’t even get me started on Joaquin Phoenix’s performance. Phenomenal. He is so enticing and believable when he plays Arthur Fleck, from his walking/ mannerisms to the way he laughs. One big thing of previous actors who have portrayed the Joker is to have their own flavor when it comes the “Joker’s laugh”. Joaquin took a more natural and painful laugh with Arthur having Pseudo-bulbar Affect and not being able to control his laughter, even in awkward situations. The fact you can see the pain in his eyes even when he’s uncontrollably laughing just shows how outstanding of an actor Joaquin is. Even though Arthur gets most of the screen time in a movie about him (lol), all the other side characters still feel extremely real. One thing that I’ve come to appreciate a lot about this film and about Todd Phillips, is that it’s not afraid to make you uncomfortable. It makes you question if it’s alright to have sympathy for a psychopath. It shows what can happen when the government and others choose to ignore the mentally ill, and just think nothing of those that it affects. Overall an outstanding movie, I suggest anyone that hasn’t seen it in theaters yet to go watch it! I know I’ll go a few more times! Expand

In my opinion, this is the best movie of a villain ever made in history that hardly another will surpass.

I did not think anyone else could do Joker justice after Heath Ledger's portrayal, but Joacquin Phoenix is right up there. Of course, the comparison is a little unfair seeing as Phoenix for the majority of the film is not playing "the Joker", he plays Arthur Fleck. He only becaomes the Joker very late on. His speech at the ennding is mesmorising. You can literally see Fleck become the Joker in just 2 lines. Expand

HOW MUCH I WAS MADE! The film is not good. It's just delicious and one of the best I've ever seen! There is probably no need to introduce the character Joker, who has been in DC for years, but we have never seen such a soul as Joaquin Phoenix gave this character. The film has an excellent atmosphere, wonderful work with the camera and the overall quality is at a huge level. I apologize to all the Dark Knight Joker fans, but for me this was the best Joker and will probably stay forever. This was a well-deserved Oscar for Phoenix, like nothing. MUST-SEE film. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although Joker leaves you wanting more at the end of the film, it also fails to keep you on the edge of your seat during the majority of it. Like a boxer who ends his rounds swinging hard during the last 30 seconds to gain favor in the judge's eyes. Joaquin does a great job interpreting the Joker when he finally gets to. However during most of the film rather than disturbed I only felt sorry for a man who, do to childhood trauma, let everyone walk all over him. The slightest rejection from anyone would trigger his hysteria. Surprisingly, they didn't add a scene where he buys an ice cream cone and as he gets his first taste the scoop completely falls and he has a panic attack. Hanging by a thread, thanks to his medication. When fundings for it are cut off and after finding out the truth about his mother. The Joker is born 90 mins into the movie. I sat thru it. At the theater I attended, I witness about 6-10 people leaving during the fist hour. When it was over an individual clapped, four about 8 seconds, when no one follow he stopped. Wasn't the worst movie I ever saw but definitely not a masterpiece. Expand

I am not a big fan of comic book movies or superhero vs. super-villain ones.
Even though the action happens in the imaginary City of Gotham, this film does not fit properly into that category. There is no hero in the movie, and the Joker is hardly THE villain.

Without spoiling the movie I would like to mention that I do not agree with all the hype about it. Especially with its moral and political message.

The movie is done extremely well technically. Joaquin Phoenix is a great actor (what a surprise!). Is it his best role? I don't think so. For an actor of his caliber it is not that difficult to play a mentally disturbed person. No doubt, he carries the whole film.

I did not like the script except the very end of it that puts the whole content into a question. Did it ALL happen? Or was it just a hallucination of a sick mind?

As a serious movie it is not working. But you cannot expect if from Marvel series.
As piece of entertainment, it definitely found huge audience. Me excluded.

I do not regret that I saw it. But I will not want to see it the second time.
Your mileage might vary.

It is actually art, it creates beauty, not just entertainment. Right after the first scene, it made me think of the opening scenes in (Tarkovsky's) Andrei Rublev where the town jester succombs to melancholy (and the Tartar horde) amid the utter despair of the Russian folks. The Joker is the face of human spirit resisting and subliming nihilism, just like Rublev's bellboy is, despite having to go very different routes.
Phoenix is phenomenal. He makes De Niro's acting look wooden and, simply, bad, in the only weak scene of the film. So-called professional critics should take a good look in the mirror to see if they have the same courage to face the truth the Joker reveals about all of us.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie has me battling with myself. I went in expecting to see the Joker from Batman, instead i saw a man suffering a mental breakdown. If the movie I had paid to see was titled as so I would be standing up shouting from the rooftops about the movie that portrayed the descendence of a mind into a place of despair. The acting would be top level and the feel and pace of the movie would have been perfect. Phoenix's portrayal is fantastic and is at times purposely cringe worthy watching. That being said I had went to watch a portrayal of Batmans arch nemesis The Joker. This was not even close to the character, he wasnt smart, in fact he appeared to have a learning difficulty, he was in no way close to the Joker of the comic franchise. As for the Batman timeline, the movie made no sense at all. It portrayed Bruce Wayne as 10 yrs old and Joker as approx 40yrs old. Joker shud be retiring when Batman gets going. As for the Wayne family name this movie doesnt treat it like the shining beacon in society, with suggestions of affairs and Thomas Wayne's public suggestion of Society being clowns.

This movie was as far as it could be from being a Batman movie

If u want to watch a movie about a man having a mental breakdown. Its well acted and directed, its pace slow enough to watch the breakdown happen in great detail.
As a movie its depicting that its 8 possibly 9/10

BUT it was supposed to be about the Joker, and if you want to watch the Joker from Batman then this isnt the movie for you, you should go and re watch Heath Ledger give a masterclass in the Dark Knight.

It was ok. Some of the highlights were that Phoenix carried the whole film, and comfortably. The cinematography was so elegant to show the descent of Fleck into the abyss, as if to instil empathy in the viewer, bravo.
The score was atmospheric and i also enjoyed the stylising although it could've been set in the 60's and not the 80's.

Didn't love the screenplay. There were a few plot holes and the story simply wasn't engaging enough. It's like they try make you empathic to the protagonist by showing you his run of bad luck and fortune but he actually rides it pretty well.
The bouts of ultra violence are sporadic yet seem forced. Ultimately, the portrayal of how his psychosis manifests is not believable. If the movie was just called "Fleck" i wouldn't have bothered. It's been shelved in the 'ok but don't need to see it again' part of my brain along with Taxi driver, Requiem for a dream , Leaving las vegas etc.
Disappointing.

Are you on crack? But I bet you've met a lot of young folks just like that, Don't you? Full of self pity, and no self-criticism. That's Joker. Now the technical aspects of the movie are good. The acting is over but pretty good, the cinematography is great and the music is the best part of it. And compared to other Marvel movies ... it's Apocalypse Now. But it's not the best Joker, not even the second best. It's not Phoenix's best work, not even his second best work. I honestly don't understand how some people can rate this movie a 10. (Even Goodfellas is not a 10, and I LOVE!!!! Goodfellas) Are they robo-reviews or from people who have never seen a movie before in their life and are just awestruck at the marvels of the cinema? I would have given this a 1 just to try to add balance, but 5 seems adequate. Here's why: Would I ever watch this movie movie again? short answer, NO; long answer NO.
Was it terrible, no, was it watchable, as a family drama, barely (not a big fan of family dramas)
Anyway, not a 10. Jacqueline Phoenix, Az. does a nice job at playing a tormented/delusional person. Cinematography was great, but that does not in itself make for a great movie. ( I can't really recall a set piece that stands out except for the ling stairs in the promo photo)
