Chapter 2 offers even more of the fist-clenched, nuggle dragging fighting that you would come to expect from John Wick. The stakes are even higher in this instalment however not as fresh as the original.

Keanu Reeves is fun to watch once again as the titular character. The action rarely lets up throughout and the choreographed stunts and fight sequences are all undeniably frenetic yet insane and quite a bit of fun at the same time, just as with the first film. Overall, you'll more than likely get a kick out of this if you enjoyed the first film, as there's plenty more fun to be had with this surprisingly expectation-meeting sequel! Expand

For someone who looked like "duh..." through most his career. He's actually solid in the John Wick movies. I mean, it requires some acting to be so damn bad ass. Sure Neo was a cool character but Keanu still looked lost through that whole trilogy. Here, he owns this character and every single action scene "and there's a lot....a whole lot." While there's plenty of colorful characters he goes up against. The hot deaf girl stands out the most though. I love how she and John communicate back and forth with sign language, each with their own death threats. Even John's dog is a great character. The film is so stylish, draggy and action packed that you might grow a little bored. Especially bored with so many gun shots to the head. If you're an action junkie though, John Wick 2 is heroine. "You don't f**k with the devil then act surprised when he turns up."

John Wick: Chapter 2 is one of best and most exciting action movie I've seen in awhile. It accomplished everything it needed to do and much more. I mean, any action movie that starts with a Buster Keaton homage is always a sign of something great. A squeal that's bigger, more violent, and plenty more head shots.

Not as emotionally engaging as the first movie and it doesn't need to. In all honestly, I liked this more than it's predecessor. It expands the universe of assassins and making tension a lot higher for John. While it dose come off a bit ridiculous, but it's self aware of what it is and it's not trying to be very serious.

This movie is a prime example of how action should be done. Outstanding gunfights and every action sequences is filmed with delicate care, making every shot and kick almost into a rhyme. Nothing shaky or quick cutting. Just the right balance and mixture that delivers a thrilling ride.

Can I just say that Keanu Reeves is a nature treasure. Seriously, this guy is on is way of being the greatest action star of are time. He is John Wick and no one can top that. A legend in the assassin world. Just by uttering his name can send chills down hitman backs. But he isn't all invincible, as he dose get beaten up pretty badly in this movie. Blood, sweat, and struggling for breath. You get the feeling that this could be his last mission, but it's the thing deep inside of him that drives him forward. It makes him an interesting and compelling action movie character.

The villains have something quite unique about them. At first I thought Ruby Rose was going to give John Wick a true fight, but that was not the case. Instead she was mysterious. Riccardo Scamarcio crossing John Wick life and him later regretting it, making everything worse. They not the best or the most in depth bad guys, but it dose separates them from being boring villains.

That's what I like about John Wick Chapter 2. It's not just a dumb action movie like The Fast & Furious series. There's never a scene where John Wick goes through three buildings with his car and jumps out just in time. I'm not saying this movie is realistic or anything, but it's grounded enough for you to care of whats going on.

Overall rating: I can be very picky when it comes to action, but this surpass my exceptions. I enjoyed it for what it was and I will be looking forward to Chapter 3.

Oh and that pencil scene was freaking amazing.

I did not enjoy the car chasing scenes, not sure why did the biker got hit in the first place and what was stolen. And as we all know the bullet-proof John Wick.
However, I do enjoy the movie overall, it gave us a glimpse of the structure of that underworld which is nice. Despite I am not an action movie fan, I do looking forward to the next movie to see how the story progress.
I think I might have an eye problem, coz I think the CGI (or graphics in general) looks a bit strange, and I kept thinking to myself whether the things are real (e.g. the dog). I am surprised no one discuss it so it is quite likely I have an eye problem.

The action and gunfights have more variety and punch, the assassin's society is given more depth, and the plot is more mature. It's also great to see a glimpse of people who can challenge John Wick in terms of skill. One of the shortfall of John Wick 2 is the main antagonist who arguably is less interesting than the one in the original film. Also here John Wick is less believable compared to the original. Hopefully in the sequel the creators would take out several layers of Wick's plot armor and let him do his job using his own wit and skill. Expand

John Wick, is in no way, an amazing, thought-out, well-told narrative with a good plot. But it does have amazing action sequences and realistic shooting (for the most part).

Acting: Don't walk into the theater expecting amazing Oscar-worthy performances, or even great performances. Keanu Reeves is not a good actor, but he gets away with it in this movie. He doesn't really say much, which is probably a good thing, and his line deliveries are usually just...off. But it does add to the feeling of him being an every-day average Joe who got caught up in a mess. Laurence Fishburne doesn't really do anything; his scenes in the trailer were basically his only scenes in the whole movie. Common was also pretty good in his scenes.

Plot: Let's face it: there is not really a plot. Any hint of a plot is just a pretty basic story-line. However it gets an excuse by making up for it with amazing, well-shot action. I think it could've been at least 20 minutes shorter, those 20 minutes being scenes that barely add to the little plot there is, but aren't too necessary. The first John Wick also had a basic plot, but still felt original and new nonetheless. This one is really nothing new, but still has great action.

Script: I've seen plenty of people saying the script is terrible, and it sort of is. The movie doesn't rely on the script and works fine without it. I just sat back and enjoyed the action, which was great, so I didn't look too hard into it or criticize it too much when watching; instead I just enjoyed.

Action: The attention to detail in this movie is astounding. Of course, the enemies still can't hit him from 5 feet away, but it makes up for that by having him actually run out of ammo and have to reload realistically among other things. The gunshots actually sound like real guns. They crackle and pop and ricochet and don't sound like paintball guns. The fight scenes don't rely on quick cuts and multiple angles; most cuts go on a long time before switching angles during fight scenes. You can actually somewhat see what is going on during the fight scenes. There's not as much shaky cam and quick cutting, so you can see what's what. This movie is also significantly more violent than the first. A larger budget equaled a lot more blood squibbs and headshots.

Overall, John Wick is an enjoyable, action-packed flick with a forgettable plot that is excused by the pure amazingness of its action sequences.

In regards to action, this film is utterly fantastic, the execution of stunts, the fluent choreography and fresh depiction of violence, it makes for an excellent follow-up to its predecessor.

'John Wick: Chapter 2' continues from where the first one left off, and turns its action all the way to eleven. Personally I still prefer the original due to its indie feel, this one feels like Hollywood have tried to take a slice, but it is still nonetheless a defining moment in the action genre. The smart suits, the stunning architecture, the eccentric personas and the camera that never shies away, however I find Riccardo Scamarcio's character less of an "evil" character in comparison to Alfie Allen in the first one, thus not caring too much of his outcome, but it's just so hard to diminish how good of a film this is.

If this and the first film are anything to go by, John Wick will gain his status as an iconic cinema character and one day stand upon other action greats like John McClane and James Bond, here's hoping to a successful future for the franchise. This isn't mindless action, this is smart, well-executed action with a purpose. Action like no other.

It's excellent fighting choreography, brutal deaths, an orgasm of male testosterone wish fulfillment. That isn't bad, I absolutely love it for what it is, a great revenge thriller, Keanu Reeves delivers an excellent badass air to himself. It has a lot of great supporting actors including Ian McShane as the Manager, Common is great as a foil for Keanu and even Ruby Rose, whom I dislike a lot as an actress fits in it.

The best part about it, is it stays in its lane. It doesn't try to be more than what it is and because of that it scratches that itch of an up-powered action flick that has a lot in common with the 80s revenge movies. I will see these as long as they keep coming out.

I was surprised that Keanu, who recently turned 52, can do the part. There is no doubt in his performance that he plays the person perfectly. I was surprised that I didn't want to tear my ears out with Ruby Rose's character. They were smart, they had her play a mute, used her looks as an attractive assassin. The only part about her I didn't like was the portrayal that she is a badass, sorry I didn't buy that for a second... then again I think it was reflected in her last fight scene so maybe the writers had judged correctly as well. The rest of the cast were great too, no complaints.

The thing I liked most about the sequel was its subtle expansion of the world of assassins. I won't go into depth as I don't want to reveal any spoilers, but the movie unwrapped a small slice more of the world, making it feel deeper and more real (well as real as wish fulfillment fiction can be).

Oh, and I really liked that they didn't repeat the same plot devices they used in the first (that is the only semi-spoilerish thing I will say).

The good: great action with lots of choreography, gun porn, and Keanu just rocked it.

The bad: could we please stop with "how cool" Ruby Rose is already?

I always appreciated how John Wick 2 expands on world-building. It explains some of the rules of the world and even goes to Europe rather than the one setting like the first.

The action scenes are bigger but not necessarily better. I think out of the whole franchise, this one has the least memorable action sequences aside from the club scene. They are still great to watch but not as cool as the first movie or the entries afterwards. I do like that we get to see John Wick in full force and not needing help as he did in the first film. It feels like the myth of the boogeyman is more believable.

I do have an issue with the antagonist. I find his reasoning for antagonizing John Wick as stupid and unnecessary. Nevertheless, this is a great sequel and is still satisfying to watch!

At this point for an action flick this could have gone either really bad or really well. Luckily, 'Chapter 2' not only respects the dark and serious aesthetic of the original film, it builds on it and is better in every way.

Like the first film, this also starts hard with an action scene in which John attempts to recover his car (or rather the picture in it with his dead wife) from some Russian mobsters. Yet, unlike the first film, this is less personal, focusing more on the inner workings of the criminal underworld. A world marked with complex rules and principles.

There is no rest for John Wick, though, the premise starting when an Italian mobster, Santino, asks him to kill his sister. That takes him to Rome, where he has a friendly discussion with an old friend who asks him with a worried look: "Are you here for the Pope?". John offers a negative answer. This might seem funny at first, but actually this goes to show what a legendary status Wick has built up among his peers. He is constantly praised for his skills and he is feared. When he gets to his target there is a party happening among the ruins of Rome. This has a symbolic meaning. It goes to show the historical influence and power this criminal underworld has. There were secrets and shadowy politics governed in the past among these now ruined walls.

The most powerful scene in the film comes when John finally meets his target. Santino's sister does not put up a fight. She knows Wick's reputation, she respects him and realizes that he cannot be stopped. Yet she dies her own way, by cutting her wrists and pondering at the afterlife. "Do you fear damnation, John?". After Wick's positive response she claims: "I always thought I could escape it." as she gives her final breath. Unfortunately, for all its aesthetic and deep beauty, its a bit pointless.

From here on, things take a turn for the worst for The Boogeyman, as Wick is known, but the action scenes are still one of the best I've seen. John Wick is a man of few words but many actions (like this film to be honest). It is still a satisfying and entertaining action flick, but is polished by visceral imagery and a gripping soundtrack.

It's undoubtedly bigger and better than the original; it has a more cohesive, and convincing plot, more compelling story, and more doses of thrills.

This sequel also expands this ravishing universe of criminals and assassins to another level with more rules, bigger scope and reach. It also emphasizes on the titular character's charm as well as Keanu Reeves's charm.

But it's also undoubtedly less entertaining than the original; it has "more of the same" choreographed action set-pieces, which , of course, don't feel as fresh as they were in its predecessor. But it still nothing short of pure fun.
Another issue I've with this movie is that the denouement is a bit messy, and longer than it should be.

All in all, John Wick: Chapter 2 is one hell of a ride that with its exceptional pulp flick make almost every other pulp action flick seems nothing more than a cash grab!

This is a straight-up action flick, with extremely brutal, fast-paced action sequences. The film realises its ridiculousness, and embraces it to the point where we simply sit back and enjoy all the thrills.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Chad Stahelski's John Wick: Chapter 2 is a bigger, better, longer, action-packed, high stakes film than its predecessor. It packed so much more heat, and audiences will grit their teeth throughout the movie. The action scenes are more fluid and more exciting, although sometimes, it gets kind of repetitive. It has to do with its length, and by the time the third act came in, audiences had had quite enough of Keanu Reeves fighting and killing dozens of men (and women.) The acting was the biggest problem of this film, albeit the high score, which was because of the glory-ness of the film. Keanu Reeves isn't precisely the dramatic type, though what he lacks in acting chops, he makes up for with his action scenes, a problem that was also found in the previous movie. Overall, the film is a thrilling ride more in-depth down into the assassin brotherhood. The cinematography and the production design was amazing, and this film is a must-watch for anyone, action movie fan or not. Expand

Usually with action sequels it can be a bit dull and repetitive, but this ramps up the action from the first film.

But yeah, 8/10 from me today. Enjoyed my time watching this, I'm going to jump into the third one now.

Dispatching the lengthy one-liner, "Oh my God it's Jason Bourne" for the simplistic, "Oh," when a poor sap realizes who is after them, Chapter 2 of this saga is another stylish entry into this newfound action franchise. Dishing out headshots like Oprah Winfrey gives away cars, John Wick: Chapter 2 finds the famed Boogeyman fighting for his life once again. After losing his wife, dog, and car, in the first film, Wick loses his freedom this time around via Italian crime boss Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scarmacio). Cashing in a marker given to him by John that let Wick get out of the game the first time around, Santino thrusts him back into the world of assassin work by tasking him to kill Santino's sister, Gianna (Claudia Gerini). Unraveling from there, the world comes crashing down around Wick with Gianna's bodyguards, fellow assassins, and then the entire world all coming down on him by the film's end.

As with the original, John Wick: Chapter 2 has absolutely exquisite action sequences. With a seamless flow and orchestral feeling to the action, the film is a sight for sore eyes. While its love of headshots leaves the film blood soaked, the fight sequences always take center stage. It is like watching a ballet with two equal foes entering in a dance with one another that only one will survive. Former stuntman turned director Chad Stahelski continues to show what makes this franchise so appealing: its gorgeous stunts and fight choreography. For those who do not believe that action can be beautiful and put together in such a fine-tuned and structured fashion that it becomes like a dance with guns and knives, John Wick continues to stand as the perfect counter to that claim. Yet, its choreography is not all that makes the film's action appealing. Utilizing great set pieces - such as the Reflections on Self exhibit in the museum that plays out like a hall of mirrors - there is always some new secret or foe hiding around every corner. They are nuanced, extravagant, and detailed sets that allow Stahelski and his star, Keanu Reeves, to really feel their way around the dance floor and find out what spot on the set is the perfect one for each move. Alongside this, Stahelski's refusal to turn the film into a handheld camera mess continuously rewards the viewer with steady, heavily digital, and incredibly crisp action scenes. The camera certainly moves, to be clear, but it is never jarring. Instead, it is in rhythm with Wick and the action with no frivolous cuts that could disorient or distract from what is taking place. Instead, the fight is given room to breathe and it takes incredibly deep breaths.

Matching the gorgeous visuals of the fight sequences is the color scheme of the film. With its neon backlighting in every sequence, it is hard to deny that John Wick is a truly stylish film. Tossing in a gorgeous usage of blue blended with any number of warm colors, John Wick: Chapter 2 is a truly beautiful film. With the crispness of digital photography matching perfectly with the film's neon aesthetic, the composition of shots and blending of colors in the background make this a film that is littered with eye candy. Together with those aforementioned fight scenes and the film is one with visuals that far exceed the quality of its plot and acting. Whenever the story may slack or a line comes off awkwardly, the film's impeccable use of color always picks it up off of the ground. The framing and composition are similarly top-notch, particularly in the sequence with Gianna. As she lies naked in a tub with the blood from her wrists taking over the water, the camera rises to the ceiling and looks down upon her. In a candle-lit bathroom with blue water and deep red blood all over, Gianna lays with her hands outstretched. It is a powerful scene before this, but with this final image of the bloody but silent carnage left by a visit from John Wick, it really cements itself as a highlight of the film.

Unfortunately, too much of the film is obsessed with reminiscing on the original. While the references to the original are quite limited, the film nonetheless keeps the same plot idea: people are stupid to mess with John Wick. Wherever he goes, his name is met with horror and fear. It is obvious why this is the case, but this was the same situation in the original. Though it is nice to stay consistent to some degree, it would be nice to see the franchise mix it up instead of constantly reminding us he is deadly. In the first film, we needed to know this information. Now, however, it feels purely masturbatory with regard to how great of an assassin Wick is. Going through a plot where literally every person in the world becomes an assassin or knows who Wick is without being told, it does become rather implausible for one, but also feels a bit like a satire.

The drumbeat thought in our heads was something akin to: "Geez, how many months of choreography did Reeves have to do for this?" It's a crazy amount of fighting. And presumably that's why you're going to see a film like this.

The one thing we generally wish movies like this did more of, is to integrate a bit more technique from real operators. You're obviously never going to get realism, but some of the choices just take you out of the movie. That said, for fans of the stylized set design and fighting, you'll have a fun time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Leaves more to desire. Starts with a crazy chase and ends up like Assasin's creed 1. A lot of similar action scenes make it boring. For like first two times it's cool but then it goes like "Reeves shoots, reeves reloads, reeves punches, reeves uses sambo technic -> first step". Feels unrealistic at all sometimes. I thought movie would have an actual ending to the series without anything else but it ended up controversely opposite. A lot of useless dialogues we don't actually need to hear. A little humor scenes which actually don't suit the movie. And then all those "AGENT SMITHS REFERENCES" breache in and make it just funny and silly. I don't like those parts a lot. Keanu looks like he does need to get retired or smth. Now to the pros. Good angles, good camera work, it's actually nearly perfect except for mirror room scene. Keanu seems to push it to the limit. This movie is OK but it's not something like OH HELL YEAH. It's become more stupid-friendly. Leaves much more to desire. Expand

He is very well handled by the sense of revenge he is going to make us wonder until the end of the film allows us to stay connected to the end and find the bad man to serve his fine.

I have very positive thoughts about john wick in general and it should definitely continue the series but this movie was bad and ridiculous compared to the first film.

"Winston, Tell them. Tell them all. Whoever comes, I’ll kill them. I’ll kill them all"

Audio: English, with Portuguese subtitles.

The 2nd iteration unfortunately cut back on the writing and plot budget and went full bore on the action which is ok if you’re into Michael Bay movies. The action scenes have some great execution - Keanu Reeves is very technical and is very good at mixing shooting with mixed martial arts - however the believability of the sequences is almost zero. One guy doesn’t go in guns blazing and take out all the bad guys - just doesn’t happen that way. Kinda reminds me of a bad video game where all the AI are dumbed down and just run in front of bullets. To add to the ridiculousness of the action scenes - the number of ordinary citizens who are hitmen starts to increase and the story stars to suggest that 100’s of NY citizens are secretly killers for hire. The story stoops to a new low by the time the movie wraps up. John Wick stands on its own as a seminal movie for the action genre. I was bored by John Wick 2. Many of the action scenes seemed virtually the same as the original. The entire mob illuminati theme teased in a promising way in the trailer got boring in the first half hour. The ending was very unsatisfying. I felt cheated. The only redeeming thing about the movie is Keanu, who is a consumate professional, and who put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into making his role as the World's Biggest Baddass convincing. But, it's not enough to save JW2. I would recommend watching John Wick twice and the trailer to John Wick 2, and call it good. Expand

The action just keeps getting better and better it is truly amazing and the mirror scene in the museum looked so good and the fighting that dirty fighting on the floor when they're just kicking and fighting and chewing it just gets to a huge new whole level I'm impressed to see what they're gonna do next time.

They found the perfect skummy little villain to play the part in this one. It was so good to see him get what was coming for him and to see the last moment of the movie it was magnifying to see how everybody was looking at him.

This feels like between movies and I like to see where they go in the next one.

Another Brawling Job.

John Wick: Chapter 2

Stahelski's second round of this everlasting boxing match delivers the insight of the mythological world that these criminals reside in. And with it comes rules, contracts, honor, betrayal and blood. Spilling out blood more than ever, this too much of everything still never R rates the screen with bloodbath, it owns that old clean palace and neat clothes that had made it appealing in the beginning. Amping up the charge on action, the accessories comes aplenty which makes fights more lethal and unlike the previous one, more justifiable. The long take action is well choreographed that isn't just confined within oneself but uses the surrounding well enough to keep it more absorbing. The mirror sequence being well shot, personally, I still recommend the battle between Common and Reeves around the stairs.

Similar to previous there is humor every now and then between these fights but what's catchy is that it is drawn from the so called awesomeness of the lead, every character, every guns, every conversation is directed towards him, the hype keeps rising along with our heartbeats. Stahelski's world is always thirsty to know "how" would it be done rather than "who" would do it and being aware of the difference between these two, he makes sure there is still lot to look forward to despite of our host that remains constant.

It adds on new characters and it does it with such smoothness, that you feel their presence before they arrive, the narration has grown far better than the previous one, along with the execution, there will not be any questions raised this time, Stahelski is not going to repeat his mistake. His main armor being Reeves whose training is well paid off, the cowboy quickness, the God-like body language, ferocious pace in action and a tendency to speak very little.

These characteristics that Stahelski keep building deriving from every possible genre, paints a crystal clear picture of a protagonist in our head; Reeves has an easy job to do. The supporting cast falls short this time, although McShane and cameos like Fishburne balances the tone. Scamarcio; the antagonist neither has that uncertainty to scare his viewers nor rudeness to make it more terminal. Rose and Common decently handles the score with few good action sequences.

This installment of the franchise is faster and has a sense of urgency that keeps you at the brisk of your seats, especially its second half, being chased by the entire community, the chase scene never feels like a chase scene, he might be on run, but he never actually does. With a hint of a bit of The French Connection, the feud between Common and Reeves turns into a character itself, the stillness and the style, everything makes you root for them. The reason why it is loved by the fans immensely, is Stahelski's knack of ending it on an unstable note, that gut wrenching finale, that last punch leaves the viewers wolfish for more. John Wick: Chapter 2 is accurately titled it is just another chapter of his life, for when the dust settle, not even a dime has changed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed the first John Wick, a blood-spattered non stop adrenaline high, a man and his, many, many, many guns seeking revenge for those that "did him wrong", pure, straight forward and fun.
The second though was a bit under especially when he went to the "assassins club" and ordered a wardrobe of tactical armoured dinner suits and chose many weapons from a smorgasbord weapons with the salesman fawning all over his customer wonderful selections.
So some of the visceral nature of the first was diluted for me.

Some good, witty dialogue and lots of violence, some bloody, with gunfights, physical altercations and the majority of the film being in low light conditions aka in dark settings.

There's not a great deal I can say about it, other than that if you liked the first film then you'll likely enjoy the sequel I suppose but it certainly wasn't what I'd call memorable.

The one part I don't get, and completely shattered the suspension of disbelief was that 85 lbs 12 year old boy that seemed to be everywhere. Nothing about that seemed less than goofy. I mean, put Shayna Baizler, or Rhonda Rousey in there, that's intimidating and filled with belief for a credible villain. Not that, 12 year old boy looking thing. I mean, Shayna Baszler is so much hotter, and cooler, she even has a UFC title.
What does that 12 year old boy have besides............ ........ ....... uh, I have no idea.

If you're into mindless mindless and stylised violence then you will love this. However the lack of any soul in the movie put me off. John Wick has about as much personality as a tree. He is in grief over his dead wife, yet spends the entire movie killing other people in a sickeningly casual way. The bad guys can't shoot him from 6 feet away, and as the body count racks up you begin to wonder if he's going to be revealed as some kind of superhuman at the end of the movie. I didn't get that far. This movie is exactly like a videogame. Expand

Beyond that, this is highly predictable, to the point where even he prepares for betrayal. But where this all breaks down, is the gun-fu. Even John Wick cannot aim and fire at an enemy before they have come around the corner, which he does countless times. I guess the other reviewers really need some combat training before claiming this is fried gold (8-10/10). What is even more damning is when the dumb person (cannot speak) gives hand signals to thugs that are forward of her position and not looking at her, though somehow telepathically know what she ordered, or the fact that at 1h30min infintiy clips become reality. Which gets even more silly when she start gunting at the 1H43 mintue mark, which belies that she is not incapable of speech after all (incomptent directing). Adding to the horror, is that no handgun in reality has 23 rounds+. In all, this was poorly directed and rediculously formulaic, with an aim to being more Michael Bay (aka mindless) than the first movie. Final review without any studio paying adversiting compensation to raise this beyond what it should be, a mediocre 5/10. By the end of the movie, this rediculous scipt suggests there are paid assasins every 100m, all ready to kill anyone for a few dollars. Laughable, but predictably Lionsgate. Expand

This needs to be stressed because if you are looking for a character study action/thriller, this is not it due to the lack of the thriller part or character study. Dialogue is not its strong suit, neither is character development, however fight choreography is very strong. Keanu performs quite well as "Action Man". So under those parameters, it's just OK. It's an popcorn movie, would recommend renting it though, not theaters. Expand

With a modest runtime of 100 minutes, it's a succinct masterpiece that ranks as possibly the finest action movie ever crafted.

This sequel does exactly the opposite, proving that "more is less". The veil over that hidden world is unceremoniously ripped away to show a contrived sub-par fantasy lurking beneath - along with the retconning of one of the most important parts of John's character foundation, the reflection of this sequel on the original movie these two factors combine to project is extremely unwelcome. The plot hamfistedly attempts to spin a single line of dialogue from the original movie into the premise for this sequel, employing a contradictory set of rules and openly spelling out the consequences of breaking them to make the way this all plays out painfully obvious. The result is a movie that lacks all the charm and intuitive logic of it's predecessor, that spends too much of it's time introducing new characters and setting up the next movie instead of focusing on making this one worth watching. Which is all a real shame, because the attention to detail and passion behind every other aspect of this film still shines through. The action sequences are spectacularly imaginative with expert camera work that takes them to a whole new level. The sets are gorgeous, but not distracting or overused. The acting is a weakpoint at times - sometimes it's a poor portrayal by the actors, sometimes it's plot requirements ruining the chemistry between otherwise well worked characters - but the core players are up to excellent standard, especially Ian McShane's effortless magnetism and Lance Reddick's disarming honesty. But all that blood, sweat and tears can't make up for writing deficiencies that not only ruin this movie, but come horrifically close to ruining the original too.
