I was worried coming into this movie because I had read a lot of negative reviews from users. So that might have change my expectations from what the previews show. This movie reminded me a lot of The Witch, in that it felt very eerieI was worried coming into this movie because I had read a lot of negative reviews from users. This movie reminded me a lot of The Witch, in that it felt very eerie throughout and had a very dreary and dark atmosphere about it. I wouldn't say this is my favorite horror movie ever, but it is pretty good. It left me wanting more, except in a very literal way. I wanted to know more, it left a lot of things a mystery. I think when people say there was no conclusion, they really mean that there are some things left ambiguous, where they hoped to get answers. Overall, very eerie movie, some good suspense/scares, a lot of uneasiness. This is worth seeing, but part of me was also hoping for a bit more.… Expand

This movie is a complete joke. As a fan of Metqcritic for several years, I never made a profile until seeing this god awful movie. Just like many of you, I came here before going to see this movie. Just like many of you, I came here before going to see this movie. And was excited to see that it had high reviews. Let me be the first to tell you, THIS MOVIE IS A JOKE!!!! The entire audience after the film ended ubruptly with no explanation, started booing and complaining about how awful it was. The trailer is blatantly false advertising a storyline that is not present in the actual movie. To be quite frank, there is no plot to the movie at all. I kid you not, don't even waste your time with this film. Anyone saying "it's creative" is clearly disillusioned by a low budget film with a lazy director that even stated that he had to scrap his initial ending because screeners said that one was too confusing. It's a joke. Save your money people.… Expand

Most of the film is build up, with little payoff. That said the climax was pretty intense and the movie competently made, with solid performances. However, as soon as the credits rolled most of the audience audibly voiced their displeasure.Most of the film is build up, with little payoff. The main issue with this movie is it doesn't know what it wants to be. Is this a drama? A horror? A survival tale? I think most people came to see a horror film as the trailers make it look like one, but it does not deliver as a horror film (or a drama...).… Expand

Why all the good reviews? Terrible waste of time. Not scary, not suspenseful...boring from beginning to end. When it ended, the whole crowd groaned and half said they wanted their money back. In my opinion, this was definitely leaps and bounds an improvement over the God-awful family drama 'Krisha', a fellow A24 distributed film which was this film's director Trey Edward Shults' directorial debut. However, unfortunately that's notIn my opinion, this was definitely leaps and bounds an improvement over the God-awful family drama 'Krisha', a fellow A24 distributed film which was this film's director Trey Edward Shults' directorial debut. However, unfortunately that's not saying much in my book, because this fell a bit short of my expectations as well. Because of its status as an indie film, I knew that most of the horror and scares in the film would come off as rather subtle. This proved to be true, but unfortunately, it proved to be a bit too slow of a burn for me, and this was one of those films where I felt that a little too much was left to our imagination. They really couldn't find a good balance for this. As for the acting, Joel Edgerton gave a strong lead performance, as did Christopher Abbott among some of the others. Lastly, I will say that I was a bit disappointed with the ending as well and definitely found myself wanting a bit more. Overall, it was an intriguing and interesting premise that definitely wasn't brought to its full potential in my opinion.… Expand

People need to understand that this film is not about some demon or some monster that comes at night.
