It comes at night is a well acted cerebral movie, until it's not. I appreciate that you are never quit sure where the plot is taking you, but when it takes you to a place that most viewers probably did not want to go it stops being enjoyableIt comes at night is a well acted cerebral movie, until it's not. I appreciate that you are never quit sure where the plot is taking you, but when it takes you to a place that most viewers probably did not want to go it stops being enjoyable and enters into the realm of movies that affect you strictly for the horrible feeling they left you with. I'm not strictly against plots that work that way, but this movie seeks to shock the audience with a strange turn but loses the viewers confidence with a poorly realized plot mechanism. I recommend watching this movie for strong acting and a great first and second act. But I'd encourage sensitive viewers to avoid entirely.… Expand

Misleading marketing aside, this didn't click with me. All of the right pieces were in place, and the film goes for an atmosphere that I usually dig, but the story it told felt tired to me. I've seen it before, and I've seen its themes tackled in a bleak post-apocalypse before. The only unique element the film really has, is that it almost aims to leave the audience in the dark. So, you wind up with a familiar story with potentially interesting plot threads that go absolutely nowhere. When me and my girlfriend sat down to watch this we were very excited. As we had good things about this movie. All I can say without spoiling it, nothing really happens and was a waste of an hour and a half. Plus its honestly just artsy rubbish.

The first part of movie is interesting. When you are watching it you will have questions about lore and narrative part. Also, it has some horror side. But in the second part movie and in the end you will have more questions and less answers -The first part of movie is interesting. First off, this is not a horror movie. There's no evil entity stalking the cast. The only otherworldly elements are in dream sequences (a cheesy ploy used in the advertising to mislead the viewer). There's an underlying sense of apprehension that pervades the film, but it never resorts to jump scares to frighten. When you realize that this is a suspense film about human mistrust, it's easy to enjoy it's subtle tension and continual discomfort. It was not what I was expecting, enjoyed it though. The trailer, the posters hints something else. So I thought it could be a horror, but it was even a terror or a thriller flick. Well,It's always family first in the apocalyptic world!

It was not what I was expecting, enjoyed it though. The trailer, the posters hints something else. So I thought it could be a horror, but it was even a terror or a thriller flick. Well, there were a few occasions where it was edgy, though in the most of the film nothing really happened. Slow but not boring. A simple storyline, limited cast and a apocalyptic theme. Surely you would have seen hundreds of this kind, so when you watch it, you won't find anything new out of it. Then remains the question, is it any worth!

I liked a simple take. Just like the film 'The Survivalist'. A small family living in an isolated place, but very precautious about any outside threat. The world is infected with an unknown disease and people are dying everywhere. Recently they had buried one of their family members. So they are not taking any chances with anyone. But now after a terrifying encounter, another family joins them and how things go on from there are the rest of the tale to tell us with a small twist.

Well, you won't see Joel Edgerton doing a solo film often. But this was a different, because of a small budget and the kind of narration. He did good and so the rest his co-stars. Firstly, it was not a horror film. Then there were a few intentional scenes to scare the viewers, but it wasn't anywhere near to scary. I've watched the whole film and I still don't know what comes at night. Dreams? Nightmares? Looks that's what it implies. Other than that it is a drama film with a little thrill. It can be watched nothing more than once.

The core family’s paranoia and disconnect with their own reality becomes the greatest cause of any ‘dis-ease’ that threatens them. Rather than truly outside threats even though there are some, they are less threatening than the family’s fear is. Which if this was the point of the movie, is often true in humanity: how our fear will design our reality more than reality will. Their fear become their biggest threat, which ultimately blinds them to realize their own boy is sick. Irritating to watch characters act paranoid or self-sabotaging without a good story to back it up. Well shot and paced, simple lighting and coloring was nice. Acting was good but it lacked a backbone of a story to justify the characters fear. It coulda been a contender, but wasn’t.… Expand

In my opinion, this was definitely leaps and bounds an improvement over the God-awful family drama 'Krisha', a fellow A24 distributed film which was this film's director Trey Edward Shults' directorial debut. However, unfortunately that's not saying much in my book, because this fell a bit short of my expectations as well. Because of its status as an indie film, I knew that most of the horror and scares in the film would come off as rather subtle. This proved to be true, but unfortunately, it proved to be a bit too slow of a burn for me, and this was one of those films where I felt that a little too much was left to our imagination. They really couldn't find a good balance for this. As for the acting, Joel Edgerton gave a strong lead performance, as did Christopher Abbott among some of the others. Lastly, I will say that I was a bit disappointed with the ending as well and definitely found myself wanting a bit more. Overall, it was an intriguing and interesting premise that definitely wasn't brought to its full potential in my opinion.… Expand

The performances were really good. The cinematography was really good. The setting was believable, and with the movie being only an hour and thirty minutes, the story carried itself efficiently without ever feeling like it dragged on. All these elements should make for a quality film, right?

Hell no.

Let's get one thing out of the way first-this movie was so mis-advertised that it makes you sick. You walk in expecting a horror movie and you get a psychological thriller. But even if you somehow were expecting a psychological thriller, it STILL doesn't deliver based upon all the glaring plotholes and dead-end twists leading to nothing. Stupid stuff happens left and right, like introducing a love triangle into the story but it going absolutely nowhere. The idea of actual monsters is flirted with but leads to nothing. A supernatural 3rd party is tossed in for mystery but nothing comes of that either. For christ's sake, they don't even explain why they don't go out at night. The film's most frustrating element is definitely the ending, not so much because of how it ends, but because of the other countless number of ways it could have that would have been much more interesting. It sets itself up perfectly for all sorts of horrifying scenarios but does absolutely nothing with them in the name of retaining this artsy, psychological horror vibe and hoping the audience will be pretentious enough to worship it's blue-balls inducing conclusion.… Expand

The entire audience after the film ended ubruptly with no explanation, started booing and complaining about how awful it was. The trailer is blatantly false advertising a storyline that is not present in the actual movie. To be quite frank, there is no plot to the movie at all. I kid you not, don't even waste your time with this film. Anyone saying "it's creative" is clearly disillusioned by a low budget film with a lazy director that even stated that he had to scrap his initial ending because screeners said that one was too confusing. It's a joke. Save your money people.… Expand

These people should be hating on the marketing team behind this film's trailer, not the film itself. This movie is about the second coming of bubonic plague. The monster here is fear, human nature, desperation, and the inevitability of death. Nobody knows what is happening or why, which honestly makes it that more terrifying. If you are like me you aren't scared by movies about ghosts or monsters that yell "BOO" and jump at the screen. Instead you are scared by the true horrors that the real world offers. That is what this film is about. The people complaining about this film's ending (which I won't spoil) clearly missed the entire point of it. They deserve to be disappointed. Maybe next time they will research a movie before seeing it instead of only going off of today's highly unreliable trailers.… Expand

When the credits roll, you think about what the movie could have been telling you, and all the unanswered questions. So many things unanswered in this film that could have changed the whole movie and sent it down a different path, yet some things are better unknown. I like the editing style of this movie, and the way that we follow through a characters' eyes. This film isn't for everyone, because I can tell I was the only one in the theater who enjoyed it. Seriously one of the worst horror movies I’ve ever seen in my life. Think like The Village meets The Happening, but it somehow manages to be worse than both of those movies.

It doesn’t know what it’s doing and this is clear from the very beginning. I started off the movie with questions, but I figured along the way or at least by the end they’d be answered, but nope, never were, all I got along the way were more questions. It doesn’t know what genre it wants to be. As the title and trailer imply, this is supposed to be a horror film, but it never feels like it. I get it, horror is kinda a misunderstood genre and some of them may not be scary but this in no way ever feels even remotely horror. My sister described it as a “pilgrim western.” While that descrip is kinda funny, I have to say I kinda agree. The characters have no development so therefore we’re left with no choice but to not care for any of the characters here or whether or not they live or die. To me this is the main flaw here because a movie focusing on characters must have good character development! Instead they’re one-dimensional, unrelatable, and you feel distant from them. I guess it’s all just because this is a film equivalent of a flatline. There’s no beginning or end to the film, it’s just a constant hum til the end. You can see the ending coming from a mile away from the dream sequences. Idk. I can’t really recommend this. It’s worse than most b-grade horror movies (because they at least add in unintentional humor). It’s also among my least favorite movies ever made.

Just a lot of nothing happens here and it’s nothing but a boring waste of time and you leave knowing just as much as you did coming into the movie: nothing.… Expand

I still have no idea what comes at night. I'll give kudos to the cinematography. The story is bleak, unimaginative, and the marketing is completely misleading. If you want to learn how man acts under horrible circumstances, just watchLame!

If the trailer wasn't hugely misleading I don't think I would have disliked this movie. If I were expecting a psychological thriller yes that's what I would have gotten however the trailer makes it out to be a summer horror flick and it isIf the trailer wasn't hugely misleading I don't think I would have disliked this movie. I know the effort that the actors, and crew go through to make a film so I keep that in mind with any criticism I level at them. This movie is a "0/10" in my opinion due to the horrible writing. The actors did very well with what they were given but the story line was so empty and way too mysterious to make any sense. We have no idea what the disease was or it's origin. We don't know what's happening in the rest of America or the world. We don't have any context to root the events in the movie. We can reasonably assume it's in America in a rural town but that's it. In an attempt to set up a mystery, the writers completely destroyed any hope of the audience understanding what was going on (not that there was much to understand). At the end of the movie, everyone at the matinee I was at was saying "WTF" out loud at the end. Also, the cheap attempt at shock when the child is shot felt completely devoid of meaning. It just felt crude and empty. Have I used the word "empty" enough in this review? Jesus Christ, stay away from this movie !

Sometimes it’s the things you can’t see that scare you more and this certainly isn’t afraid to mess with your head. Sure you might be left with more questions than answers when it’s finished but if it can scare me it can scare anyone. Highly recommended.… Expand

It has great perfomances (especially by Joel Edgerton) and has great cinematography and camerawork. But the story is told in a too arthouse way, combining that with a director who likes to give no answers to the viewers and wants you to interpret it yourself and you have this movie in a nutshell. 1 thing is sure, it's not what they marketed.
We know as little as the characters in this movie which I view as something good, it keeps the mystery going, but in the end we get little to no pay-off which some people may not like at all. I thought it was pretty cool that I could interpret it myself but still I didn't have the feeling the movie got somewhere in it's 90 minute runtime. That's because this movie is not about the unknown entity causing the unknown virus, instead it's about the fear the characters have and how scary the unknown can be. The movie is very atmospheric and claustrophobic and that together with the extremely slow-pacing makes for a movie that isn't easy to watch where everything is quite depressing and heavy. In conclusion, I understand the underlying ideas whitin the movie. I also appreciated a lot of them for the most part. But it makes the movie unrewatchable for me and it's sometimes too vague for me too fully grasp this movie. And even with the great acting and cinematography I still not fully like this movie. The story is too mediocre but portrayed too vague. This movie is certainly not something for everyone but it's sure as hell one to think about afterwards.… Expand

The movie is not simple, requires some afterthought analysis to answer many questions. It is not a horror movie at all as many claim for some reason. Lots of horror movie fans were hugely disappointed after having seen the film. They just did not get it… It is a suspense drama about how decent people become killers in dire circumstances. All the civilization veneer comes off quickly when they have to protect their family against the whole world to survive, when paranoia rules. The beast is not outside, the beast is inside us. And “it comes at night”, when you are alone with yourself, when all the tensions are high. There are very few actors in this film, and they perform brilliantly. Equally great are directing, cinematography and music.
Overall, it’s a “must-see” movie, and I highly recommend it.… Expand

This is so that the feeling of havoc and mistrust felt by the characters is also felt by you, as you are unsure of what to believe. The main themes are regarding the actions that people take when in desperate situations, and how trust plays into a crisis. It is both an interesting look at humanity and also a look at yourself, as you find yourself thinking about the actions you yourself would take, what kind of person you are, and which characters you sympathize more with. It's a neat psychological thriller that messes with your head and makes you think. It may not scare you like how Saw scares you, but it scares you like how reading about a murder in the news scares you. It's a kind of real fear that keeps you up at night and can't be solved by turning a nightlight on. It's not a rip-roaring thrill ride, but rather a slow-burning thinker. "It Comes at Night" is every sense of the word brilliant. Not your typical monster or trashy gore fest. Psychological and unsettling is more fitting. You barely know anything and that's the main horror behind it. The unknown and the"It Comes at Night" is every sense of the word brilliant. Not your typical monster or trashy gore fest. Psychological and unsettling is more fitting. You barely know anything and that's the main horror behind it. The unknown and the darkness.

However, you do get a sense of what's going on be each little details. Not by characters explaining the plot to the audience, which logically wouldn't make sense in a normal conversation where these characters are one step ahead of us.

Which audience members hate. Life is very, very complicated, and so films should be allowed to be, too.

The pacing was smooth and the cinematography was so excellent, it adds to the atmosphere with the setting. And you actually like the characters even the harsh decisions are understandable, because in a fear of panic you will do the same. Not a single weak performance in the movie, everyone fitted the part.

And that ending was so cold it left me physically broken. The feeling of hopeless, somewhat reminded me of "The Mist" ending. Grim, but it felt purposeful and personal. Also leaving you thinking and try to put the missing pieces together to fill in the story.

People who say this movie is predicable or it's been done before I really don't get. I really didn't know where things were going. It honestly felt unpredictable. This been done before? Well if it has then this did it better in terms of execution.

Overall rating: Been a few day since I've seen it and I'm still thinking about it. Haven't seen Trey Edward Shults previous film "Krisha", but my curiosity for he's future work has peaked.… Expand

I just have one simple question: what is the meaning of that ambiguity? I'm sure the majority of people who has a high school education would have studied ambiguity in English class. Whether it is the ambiguous poetry or the double-sense in Shakespeare's monologues, there's one thing in common: those ambiguity all have meaning; they all serve to suck the reader deep into contemplation as well as aid the writer to score his theme. That use ambiguity, unfortunately, is not seen in this movie. Yes, the cause of that dog's death was unclear whether artificial or by the disease; yes, the meaning of that red door may resemble much more than a piece of wood with a handle; yes, we don't exactly know why at the final part when the two families start killing each other the background music was identical to the one only appeared in the teen boy's nightmares; the list can go on. But what point does the movie want to make? Is it simply that the loss of human morals can be as dangerous as the lethal disease? If so, this movie is nothing compared to The Walking Dead, a show that has been abusing the theme of savagery vs civilization since 2010. What I find very interesting is the fact that no top critic from any forum as ever given a thorough attempt of explaining the meaning of this movie, as if no one yet completely understands what in the world this movie is talking about. Maybe, just maybe, there really is a deeper meaning hidden miles under the surface, but if that's true, no one has yet found it yet. However, nobody give those character a **** by the end of the movie: they are who they are at the very beginning, and no character development. Lots of random hints threw to the audience and when audience thought the explanation is coming, it ends. Most Reviewer said: hey this is good, audience felt bad because the environment they created for the movie actually make they felt bad. No it is no like that, audience felt bad because all the hints they think will comes to a conclusion does not, so they felt bad because they thought they are being twisted and fooled like a joke.

Extremely grim.
It starts out decently and ramps up your expectations for awhile but then doesn't go anywhere at all really.
It's pretty short,under an hour and a half and it just abruptly ends like they ran out of financing.
It's supposed to be artsy slice of life social commentary in a Lord of the Flies way i suppose but
isn't satisfying in that respect either.
It has creepy bits but then the payoffs for these bits are something just pedestrian.
There's no mysticism at all even though they try to trick you into thinking there might be using one character's dreams.
You never find out what the disease is or see a wider view of than this little 1 house microcosm where the action occurs.
I don't watch the shows but i assume this is what the Walking Dead must be like only without the dead and shot in only 2 rooms.

To me this is a film about two families in which the parents are so busy being wary of each other and trying desperately to survive in a terrible situation that they never realize that the real danger to their survival is not external, but their ignorance of the deep trauma suffered by their children. The film begins with the horrible, if necessary, death of the first family’s “infected” grandfather, and his grandson never gets over this trauma and restlessly walks the house’s attic at night, spying on the second family that enters the film later on. But none of the parents realize the emotional turmoil in their children, which eventually causes the final horror in the film, precipitated by the loss of the family pet, a terrible trauma for children even in normal circumstances.… Expand

Wow a divisive movie for sure. Critics love it and audiences not so much. It isn't sensational, but it was worth a watch. It may have been marketed incorrectly and trailers and screenshots made it out to be a horror, jump-scare filled adventure, it is completely different; not too cliched, and creepy and unsettling rather than utterly scary.

Acting: The acting is amazing. Though the movie has a very small cast, every actor and actress performed outstandingly well. They really showed how scared and/or paranoid they were at times, making you feel the more submersed in the events taking place.

Characters: Though the actors portray their characters very well, the characters are not developed as well as they could have been. The movie is rather short, and focuses more on the "It" rather than the development of characters. We are not as emotionally attached as we could have been, especially for the ending. Just a few more minutes with the characters and their backstories, for example, would really make the audience feel for them and be attached to them. Instead, the only emotions we have for the main characters are the basic ones in these types of movies (I hope they don't die/I want a happy ending for them, etc.)

Cinematography: The cinematography has got to be one of the highlights of the film. Lighting is used perfectly to set the dark tone. Every corner feels like it may contain a spooky skeleton or other beast. The camera angles and lighting are used to their best effect to make nearly every shot haunting or suspenseful. Many of the shots at night are up-close or are made to feel claustrophobic because it feels like the characters are trapped in the house, and there's nowhere to go. The cinematography creates an eerie and chilling atmosphere that's hard to shake off the entire film, and will even have you thinking about it after the movie is over.

Plot: In terms of plot, it is nothing special. Of course, it is more about how the plot plays out and how it's executed, which many don't seem to see. Many negative reviews say that the plot is boring and cliched, but fail to see deeper into the timing of events, and how they are placed very well. This isn't the best movie I've seen, but it should receive a lot of credit for what it pulls off. Another variable many fans are angry about is the misleading marketing. Trailers and even screenshots go out of their way to find the "scariest" parts of the film, with jump-scares and loud noises. However, these shots make up very little of the movie. The movie is more about paranoia and trustworthiness, and what someone will do to protect their family. The way I see it, that's the "It". Many viewers seem to not give this movie a second chance, purely because it was marketed incorrectly. In this case, blame the marketing team, not the creators of the film. The creators rarely play a part in the editing and forming of the trailers. Other viewers don't seem to see what I see (that the "It" is paranoia, etc.), and just see it as a boring movie that never shows the actual monster. This movie was marketed as more of a typical "monster movie", but this is not the case. The monster is never even shown. Many see this as a plot hole, or that it is not terrifying because it's never shown, but I find it more unsettling. Because I don't know what it is, it makes it more creepy. The film gets so close to showing the "It" at times, but doesn't quite, which adds a hint of mystery, but I can still picture the "It" as something terrifying. It leaves more to the imagination, but some people apparently don't have that. Many say that the ending is disappointing, and I can see why, but again, it's how the ending is executed, not what the ending is. And I feel like it was executed well. Not perfectly, but well. There may be a few things I would change, but I feel like the movie and ending was nearly as good as it could be.

Overall, It Comes at Night is a creepy, atmospheric movie that will have you asking questions, but good, healthy ones that can spark conversations and leave it open for theories. There's a difference between a plot hole and leaving it up to interpretation. It Comes at Night leaves the audience guessing, not just about what happened, but why something caused that what to happen, or at least it should. And I don't mean to generalize, but I feel this movie attracted horror movie fans, who can't quite appreciate a movie with more compelling, thought-provoking situations that are up for interpretation. That doesn't mean it's true, but that's just how I feel reading the amount of negative reviews this movie should not receive due to being different and pulling it off well. It makes you ask questions, but doesn't leave you clueless, just curious. And I feel like if a movie can pull that off, that movie has succeeded in doing what it meant to do. In this case, It Comes at Night pulled this off well, and I believe it deserves plenty of praise, but not too much.… Expand

This movie is completely not what you think. It uses misdirection from the title to the trailer. Don't support such filth. Even as a thriller it was mediocre at best. Acting was good.

I really really liked this movie and I was pretty shocked to realize that others hated it so much. When I got home I watched the trailers and now I understand the frustration around it: this was an incredibly poorly marketed movie that setsI really really liked this movie and I was pretty shocked to realize that others hated it so much. When I got home I watched the trailers and now I understand the frustration around it: this was an incredibly poorly marketed movie that sets you up to expect a horror movie. This isn't a horror movie though, it is a small post apocalyptic suspense. The movie focuses on tension, questions, and paranoia. I have seen many people complain about the many loose ends in the film but the question marks are SO important to why this movie works. If you are making a movie that explores the paranoia between characters, you can't give the audience all of the answers, answers eliminate suspicion and skepticism. I'd recommend this movie for people who wanted to like Walking Dead but couldn't get over the **** writing/acting. It's basically a really good and smart episode of that show.… Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If you love The Witch, you may very well like this movie. It immerse people in a dreadful and creepy sense that requires no jumpscares whatsoever. Actually it was mismarketed as a horror movie that u expect to have some monster or evil spirit lurking in the wood ready to rip people apart at night in it. But it doesn't, the horror in this horror, which i would call a psychological thriller, is about good people being pushed to do horrible things to the others in the paranoia of not knowing whats going on. In fact, we still dont know what truly happened after all, so its gonna be a hit or miss for the audiences. But it's still worth watching.… Expand

Two families not sure they can trust the other, holding onto what humanity they have left, pretending they still care while the world rots around them.

This movie isn't as deep or revealing as it thinks it is, but it's transfixing. Beautiful darkly lit images, moving, sometimes dreamlike camerawork - in particular the slowly panning shot of the painting filled with demons while the camera pulls away to reveal the long dark hallway and the red door at its end. There isn't enough of this, or it's not illuminating enough. What little mystery there is doesn't come through as much as the film thinks it does - it's maybe not up to more than it is.

The final scene is a well finessed tension overload. You know what's coming but you can't help but dread its inevitable conclusion. The slowly shrinking aspect ratio adds heaps to the claustrophobia and the focus - I didn't notice it was happening until the scene was over but immediately understood its impact. Joel Edgerton does much with little as usual. He plays tough here, but lets his character have mannerisms and weaknesses that suggest that he's really just a man playing at it who doesn't know what he's doing.… Expand

This film almost reminded me a lot of "The Last of Us" with a mix of Night of the Living Dead thrown in, its not as open as the game is as it's a deeply contained film. This movie is all about the tension. Nothing else. And it succeeds greatly at keeping you on edge most of the time. It's a psychological horror movie. The plot is thin as ice. It's entirely based around the people interacting with each other and the tension that grows from it during a desperate situation.

It's a bit of a trend it seems. To do horror movies that only hints at the monster. And it somewhat works. But after these types of movies I also always feel cheated. I understand the point of making movies like this, but I'm a curious fella, so I don't like all of the unanswered questions. That aside, it absolutely succeeds in building the tension around what the movie is described as in its summary.… Expand

Opinión:

Sinceramente me tomó 3 intentos ver esta película sin quedarme dormido, la primera media hora se ve prometedora, pero pasan y pasan los minutos y nunca llega a ocurrir algo, no hay nada, absolutamente nada, aquí se promete mucho y nada se cumple, no hay tensión ni presión psicológica, solo son dos familias tratando de vivir en un mundo que fue asediado y diezmado por una especie de virus, pero no, no hay nada paranormal ni criminal ni científico.

Lo único que viene de noche es la hora de dormir para las personas como yo, y para otros sería la hora de irse de fiesta.

Si padeces de insomnio, esta película es mejor que media dosis de Diazepam.

Apesar de ser uma experiência bem angustiante assistir esse, eu, particularmente, não o classificaria como terror e sim como um suspense muito denso e enigmático. Boy this movie was a horrible mess. It could have been a lot better. One of the first rules that a great movie must have is a universe where it follows its own rules. This movie failed in this regard and that is why the movie failed. The best way to understand this is to take a great movie and dissect it with this rule in mind. The Sixth Sense is a Great movie. It sets up a universe with a rule, gives you hints throughout, and stays true to its rule. It Comes at Night fails because it never sets up the rules about the universe the characters live in. For example, can we know something more about the disease, how you catch it, how you know someone is sick, can the door be unlocked from the inside without the key, etc. Without the rules and more logical and consistent clues, the movie does not really come together where the movie goer can figure things out. It falls flat and is inconsistent and incoherent. If everyone has diff theories about what really happened in the movie it is not a good thing. Its okay for people to have a different idea about what a movie meant, but people should be given a fair chance to figure a movie out. Again the Sixth Sense is a great example of the movie maker getting it right.… Expand

There are plenty of other movies out there that have used a post-apocalyptic setting to remind us that the real monsters are people. Few of them have been as effective at playing off of our paranoia the way It Comes at Night does. It's a lookThere are plenty of other movies out there that have used a post-apocalyptic setting to remind us that the real monsters are people. Few of them have been as effective at playing off of our paranoia the way It Comes at Night does. It's a look into the mind of desperation so tense that it may just drive you insane.

There are so many strange happenings that never get explained. What did the dog see in the woods? How did the kid end up in another room? Who did open that door? This kind of thing may frustrate those who obsess over knowing every little detail, but getting caught up in the mystery is part of the movie's dark magic. There's a feeling of something else going on other than the "can I trust these other survivors?" scenario. Possibly something supernatural. Even I felt a little frustrated by the lack of answers by the time the credits rolled, but the moment-to-moment unease and powerful ending more than made up for it.

This is one of those rare movies along the lines of The Blair Witch Project that allows us to scare ourselves. It feels like so much is happening off-screen. Just over that next hill out of our view. Watching characters standoff with something that both we and they can't actually see causes the imagination to run wild. You give yourself the nightmares here. Trey Edward Shults just provides the reasons to distrust everything that is and isn't in front of you. Mostly thanks to the stellar cinematography from Drew Daniels. The ways the camera moves down hallways and corners elongates them and their shadows. At times the movie feels and looks like a horror movie from the '70s or '80s encased in a more modern struggle for survival story.

The nightmare sequences are the film's few normal attempts at freaking you out as they give you something frightening to look at. They're also one of the driving factors behind the bleak coming-of-age story that ties into (and might actually be) the main plot. Acting as manifestations of young Travis' (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) fears, desires, and growing distrust of and anger towards his father. Watching him struggle with the harsh things his parents must do in order for them all to survive is a key factor of the experience.

It Comes at Night uses the unknown to become something more than your standard post-apocalyptic tale about the evils that lurk inside us all. We have reason to fear the people in the house as well as whatever it is lurking in the woods just outside. Then there's the ending that will stick with you long after the credits have rolled. A tour de force of self-induced anxiety and edge-of-your-seat tension that is only slightly marred by the occasional MacGuffin.… Expand
