Pitt goes into major details on how he became a vampire (thanks to vampire loon Tom Cruise in a wickedly wild over-the-top turn) and his run-ins with others like him (a very young Kirsten Dunst and a then-unknown Antonio Banderas). Opulently realized schizophrenic exercise that has a little bit of something for most audiences. Pitt is focused, Cruise is unbound and Dunst arguably does the work of her life. Director Neil Jordan (who is best known for films of similar style like "The Crying Game") knows exactly which buttons to push and when to push them. While flawed in many areas, "Interview With the Vampire" is still nevertheless a fun and entertaining venture that definitely has blood, teeth and wings. 4 stars out of 5. This is another example of people who lack creativity demolishing the work of their betters. They made numerous changes to the source material because of hubris. The changes in no way enhanced the story and often detract from it. I remember back in the 90's when I heard Tom Cruise was cast as Lestat and I laughed. At the time I knew Cruise from Risky Business and Top Gun and could not see him pulling off Lestat. But I thought he did a decent job with the character. Not so with this version. This Lestat is flat and uninteresting. In the 90's version Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and a young Kirsten Dunst were also great. I don't like anyone from this version. This series is a waste of resources. It's just yuck. Expand

Call it a horror film or a period drama or a supernatural thriller... it doesn't matter. It fits all molds. It scares at a deep-down visceral level. It is a grown-up film about the dual-nature of certain life (or perhaps death) choices. What it is NOT is some idiotic, throat-ripping, comic-book monster movie. Personally, I believe this is a great vampire movie! Different! One of the best vampire movies ever! A classic on its own! This movie doesn't want to emulate 'Dracula', or pretends to horrify us. It goes beyond that! It was not just the scrip, but the performances were great too! I loved seeing Tom Cruise portraying a character that was meant to be dark natured, despiteful, amoral, and physically unpleasant, too, I mean totally odious! A nice change! Finally, I think is disappointing to see how harsh the criticism is. This is not a horror movie, nor it is a drama neither it is a thriller...is all of them and in a way none! Visually is outstanding! To me it is a 10! Expand

Interview with the Vampire is actually a very boring movie and the movie's even got a very forgettable story.

The movie's got some over the top acting from Lestat De Lioncourt (Tom Cruise) but Louis (Brad Pitt) is actually pretty good.

The dialogue which is given from each character throughout this movie is honestly quite weak, each piece of dialogue is received so horribly. Also, the movie's got some good humour scattered throughout only a few certain scenes, which actually works quite well but there's not enough of the humour.

The pacing which this movie's got is honestly dreadful, each main moment isn't built up so well and it ruins the emotions as well.

The movie's got some brilliant cinematography from Philippe Rousselot, he captures each graphic moment pretty well.

Finally, the movie's even got some very gory moments. Which are all actually really well done, despite the dreadful pacing towards these build ups.

The makeup artist Michelle Burk does a brilliant job on making the vampires come to life. They've got a very interestingly dark look to them, which I think adds to their character quite a bit.

Overall, Interview with the Vampire is actually a very boring movie. The movie's got some over the top acting, weak dialogue, not enough good humour, dreadful pacing, brilliant cinematography, very well done gory moments and a brilliant makeup artist.

I wouldn't recommend it, if you're wanting to watch a brilliant Horror/Romance movie, this isn't the one for you.

Directed by Neil Jordan, has the participation of Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Kirsten Dunst (as a child). It received two nominations for the Oscar (Best Art Direction, Best Original Score).

This is the film adaptation of one of the greatest horror novels of this American author, and is even more appealing when we realize that she actively collaborated with the production, signing the adaptation of the script. Indeed, it's a great script, faithful to the novel and original story. And for me, this movie has another good note: fully escaping the recent "sex symbol vampire" cliché, fueled by movies like "Twilight", this film depicts vampires as they really should be: monsters with some psychological depth.

The actors are excellent in their roles. The highlight goes obviously to Pitt and Cruise, who were not only perfectly able to give charisma to the characters but also not ignore the importance of the psychological characteristics. Pitt took it to the extreme in his character, torn between the love of his own humanity and the overwhelming desire for blood he feels. The way both actors share the scene is irresistible, such as how Cruise transforms his character in "evil genius" of his friend.

The film contains several very intense scenes with moments that can hurt some sensibilities. Nevertheless, its not a very bloody movie. The atmosphere is dark, sinister, something largely enhanced by the cinematography, dark and misty, and the soundtrack, worthy of a good horror movie (something that this film is definitely not). The special, visual and sound effects are good, such as the characterization and makeup. The costumes are exceptional, portraying accurately the clothes of the several historical periods portrayed throughout the film.

Interview With The Vampire : The Vampire Chronicles

3 Out Of 5

Interview With The Vampire : The Vampire Chronicles is an interesting take on one's usual vampire tale, especially since it focuses less on the characteristics of it and more on the revenge aspect of it. The chemistry among the characters is acted out and written brilliantly especially in its first two acts where diplomacy brews among them which grows into a behemoth rage of vengeance and spirals out its plot with an eccentric push. It is rich on technical aspects like costume design, art design, editing and sound department. The script is not as smart as the makers think but it surely is gripping enough to keep the audience engaged and invested in it. Addition to that, the makers uses their star power wisely and draws in most of the attention from it.

Anne Rice; the writer, has done an amazing work on creating a high pitched tensed drama among its three dimensional characters where Neil Jordan; the director, is merely supporting her on its execution where he should have been more expressive and accurate on his vision. The performance is objective is utterly satisfied by the protagonist Brad Pitt and his supporting cast Tom Cruise, Kirsten Dunst and Antonio Banderas. Interview With The Vampire : The Vampire Chronicles is a thought-provoking but an over-stretched interview which may not be as nutrient but is surely juicy.

The film impresses with its haunting elegance and narrative density. Particularly worth mentioning is the incredible acting performance of the two main protagonists Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. For Brad Britt it was the breakthrough in Hollywood, and for Tom Cruise another milestone in his creative art. Also a real Zeitgeist film of the 90s. A tribute to youth. Neil Jordan delivered a timeless masterpiece here, unmatched, full of expressiveness and depth. You can watch the film over and over again and each time you discover new aspects of the film adaptation of the book by Anne Rice, who was initially unhappy with the cast. But after all these years, it was the right decision to cast the lead roles like that. Top casting, top direction, a haunting soundtrack that puts the stamp on the work, fantastic cinematography and a great script with top-notch actors. This is cinematic art in its highest form, this is filmmaking in its essence. AWESOME! BRAVO! BRAVO BRAVO! Expand

What I Personally Liked About "Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles":
As with many great films, the acting is first and foremost the thing to discuss. In the case of "Interview With the Vampire," there are two shining stars lighting our horizon. The normally super serious, stick-up-his-a** Tom Cruise allows himself to be loose and mischievous in this role and that chaotic playfulness suits him well. Also, for the second time in 1994, a successful long term career in motion pictures began for an ahead-of-her-age child star in the form of Kirsten Dunst (the other being Natalie Portman in "The Professional"). Kirsten steals quite a few scenes and displays a heady bravura beyond anything audiences could have expected. Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rea and Christian Slater all turn in top-notch performances but they pale somehow in comparison with the two true stars of the movie. The film's retention of Anne Rice's unique literary style is another strong selling point. While not all of the finer details of the material have been carried over from her novel, the general tone matches Rice's work admirably. In addition, it doesn't apologize for its depictions of twisted sexuality and violent bloodshed. Rather, it revels in them and refuses to suffer for trying to please a wider audience by lessening the impact of its gruesome underlying themes.

What I Personally Disliked About "Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles":
The same problem which troubles the majority of Neil Jordan's work permeates this piece as well: pacing, pacing, pacing. There were a few moments when I found myself wishing Jordan had stretched his cinematic wings and allowed his characters to breathe a bit. Often times it feels like there is a halting progression to the way the story unfolds and that makes it hard to fully enjoy the film. Another very big drawback is the inclusion of the song "Sympathy for the Devil" used during the end credits. I like Guns N' Roses. I really do. I just don't like their version of this song. It doesn't fit the film and feels like a big bit of pandering to the mainstream crowd; something the rest of the film avoids doing. It almost ruins the culmination of the film with its brazen banality. The original Rolling Stones version of the song would have sufficed; however I would have preferred to hear Elliot Goldenthal create another wonderful piece of gothic score.

My Overall Impression of "Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles":
Even though this film tries to remain true to itself in the long run, there are a few slips along the way. A slight, semi-commercial sheen washes over the picture from time to time and this holds it back from being an ultimate vampire classic. Still, the macabre morality play we are presented with during this production, combined with the skilled acting performances, certainly elevates this movie beyond average status.
