The brilliant screenplay is reason for this wonderful and beautiful animation. The script manages to convince the audience of the the importance of expressing emotions and accepting sadness, something with live actions have not been able to do. The issue of mental health is so visible and important for the young kids and even adults who watch. However, it does get a little boring in the middle but manages to save it self later on. Expand

Inside Out is easily the best PIXAR movie since Toy Story 3, a shame it took a whole five years to get there. I remember seeing the first teaser for it and thinking it would be good, but when I first saw the movie I was blown away. The concept of this movie is absolutely genius. Inside Out is a lot of fun, but it's also thought-provoking and in a really good way. I had a lot of fun thinking about what the inside of my head looked like. By the end of this movie, the emotional payoff was really big and got me to cry again even after watching it several times. This movie is another film in PIXAR's catalog that is enjoyable for everyone. It's a quality that the best PIXAR films (and animated films in general) share. In a couple of years, this will easily be another PIXAR classic, and I already know some people that consider it a classic. Expand

An enjoyable, instructive, realistic animation that has been worked with professionals throughout the five-year production process.

Age stages is a favorite subject of Pixar, middle age in The Incredibles and old age in Up; Inside Out is also a story of growing up, examining childhood and adolescence.

"Have you ever looked at someone and wondered what they were thinking?" The story begins with a question.

Dream studio, prison of the unconscious, islets of character, spikes, imaginary friend; The connections between them are very successful.

Emotion centers and their effects on decision making were also realistic but incomplete; but maybe it can be detailed in a further / different version, because other factors affecting the character are not taken into account. But that's not the focus of the movie anyway, so it doesn't affect its success much.

Animation, whose target audience is adults rather than children, can be said to appeal to all ages.

The exploration of the human mind is the film’s greatest strength and its greatest weakness. Its joyful to see the film explain how the various features of the human mind work leading to tons of laughs and smiles. At the same time though it feels like too much of the film is that. Inside Out often gets so caught up in the gimmick that it forgets to tell a story. There are really powerful themes not only about the necessity of sadness; but about how each emotion has its place and you shouldn’t let one emotion rule your entire life. Whenever the film explores that it becomes something special. Had each element of Riley’s mind tied back to the film’s theme and helped the characters explore themselves like in Finding Nemo or Up this film could’ve become something special. Its still charming as it is having the fun of the mind and again there is some substance but again the gimmick holds it back. Even with all that said though I still really enjoy the film its more an explanation for why it doesn’t hit me as hard as Pixar’s other films. Whether it be for its charming gimmick or its thought provoking message Inside Out is the first time in a while I can say Pixar made a film that was really good. Not there best ever but there best in a while. There best film since Toy Story 3 and their best original film since Up. Hopefully really good movies return to being a norm and not an exception. It felt a little long, and I was a little bored now and then. I saw it in a theater full of kids and there was some restlessness, which doesn't happen for the best Pixar films. It isn't a bad film, but it certainly isn't as funny as some of Pixar's films. It mostly deals with a little girl's depression about moving to a new city with her family. In fact, I only remember one laugh out loud part, where we get a glimpse into a boy teenager's mind when he tries to talk to a girl. I would rank this one somewhere in the middle of all the Pixar films, which means it's still way above average compared to most animated features, but not a classic. Expand

As was with Toy Story, it's more about feeling than story.

Some fragments, especially at the middle, are maybe a bit rushed and we get to see Joy and Sadness wander through a lot of different places without really giving us the time to appreciate them and the ideas behind them. But, in true 3-act structuring, it all comes back into place at the end.

A heart-felt story about growing up; and I suppose it's not meant for kids, who probably won't understand much of it - while adults are going to get a real kick in the subconscious.

Is Inside Out the “best children’s film ever made”? No.
Inside Out Is a marvellous return to form by Pixar with some extremely inventive ideas and characters and design, but it doesn’t seem to work as cohesively as other Pixar behemoths like The Incredibles, Toy Story, Wall-e, etc.
The story seemed a little too mish-mashed, dropping from one idea to another. Don’t get me wrong, the real psychology and ideas used within the film are great but it seemed like they didn’t try to keep a flow going, just rush from one to another. The characters were distinguished right from the start and made for some comic moments, but their design seemed a bit off for Pixar; maybe I’m being harsh but a little too glittery? The story itself seemed a little linear in where it was going, but made for some fun circumstances along the way that everyone could enjoy.
The comedy in the film seemed to not be as consistent as other Pixar films, with the funniest parts being at the end of the film (and the abstract thought portion of the film). This made it a little disappointing in that aspect but the film made up for it in how colourful and imaginative it was. I believe that they should’ve played with the main gimmick of the film a little more to induce more comedy; it stayed a little too much in the girls head.
Albeit the discrepancies in the film Inside Out comes with enough inventiveness and revitalisation to show that Pixar is a force to be reckoned with in the animation business. A thoroughly enjoyable film but NOT the greatest children’s film that you could see. This is the beginning of Pixar’s return to form.
7.5/10
Also anyone notice this: The main controlling emotion in the girls brain was obviously Joy BUT the main controlling emotion of the mother is Sadness and the main controlling emotion of the father is Anger. Did Pixar really just put in a kind of subtle joke that the father is abusive and the mother is unhappy in the marriage or something like that? Jesus Pixar…

However, it is massively unjustlyAfter a string of duds (by Pixar standards anyway) following the longest consecutive smash hit run maybe ever in motion pictures, this movie is back in line with the proven genius of the Pixar Brain Trust. However, it is massively unjustly over-rated yet again by the idiot critics who sense any kind of intellectual endeavor that strives to entertain and exert high brow thought as an automatic rubber stamp highest rating, best review they can generate. Again, this is because they are all sheep who cannot make movies themselves and they love to champion ones that put their values on display and also challenge them as viewers since all they do is watch movies and it gets boring, especially with all the garbage.
To put this in perspective for the rest of us: While this movie is extremely clever and very sharp, also with vivid bright colors I personally loved, it is not a great movie on the level of past Pixar greats such as "Finding Nemo", "Ratatouille", or "Toy Story 3" to name some of the best in my book. It doesn't have the all important emotional impact in a story that is by its nature very complicated, too complicated especially for kids.

Dose anyone remember that TV show back in the 90's called Herman's Head, no? well your going to think this is a original story but really it's ripping off a story line that already exist.

The story to Inside Out is about a girl called Riley who is just like any typical young girl - dealing with the ups and downs of life - but on the inside, things are much different. When her father gets a new job in San Francisco and moves the family from the Midwest to the West Coast, "Headquarters" the place in Riley's mind that contains her emotions, goes into overdrive. Joy, Fear, Sadness, Anger, Disgust - each one plays a role - and with a new city, home and school - there is going to be some major conflict.

"The most original animated ever made".

"It's both funny, original and better than Up".

"Inside Out is Pixar's original film yet".

NO...

Everybody is going nuts over this movie calling it as "A masterpiece", and "One of the best animated films of all time". Now since I did like this movie as I do think this is a solid Pixar film, but I wouldn't go that far to call it a flawless masterpiece as people are calling it as the movie does have flaws. I feel like this is going to be one of those movies were people get really hyped over at the first like everybody is giving it the same rating and giving it the same love as everybody else, and if you say anything bad about it or you pick out a flaw in the movie people will rip you a part, but after a while when the hype dies down that's when it's okay to say that it's sucks or you didn't like it because everybody is coming out saying they think different of it. This happened before with movies that got hyped to death such as: Toy Story 3, Frozen, Gravity, The Avengers 1&2 and Avatar. But who's this movie may still get love after a while and it may seem like I'm hating on this movie which I'm trying not to come off like that as I think this is a good movie, but to me I like stepping out of the box and not try to join the hype as some people doing as I think a lot of people block out negative or any problems when they watch a movie just because A: They were looking forward to it or B: They wanted the next big thing. To those who are not convince that I don't hate this movie let me drill this in your head, I like this movie, I don't hate it. It's better than Cars 1&2 and Brave. But to me it's not a original masterpiece even when this story has been use already, but still this is a good movie. Okay I got that out there.

Let's talk about the positive's: The animation in this movie is so beautiful and really colorful and that colorfulness really suited the tone perfectly giving it a kid colorful welcoming feel to it. I can already see this movie is going to win best animated movie at the Oscars that's how good the animation in this movie. Pixar never disappoints when it comes to animation to they movies, even the ones I didn't like so much at least I can look at the visual's and be amazed of the detail put into it. And in this movie once again Pixar impress me with the animation.

The movie towards the end which I'm not spoiling it but I think everybody who's seen the movie or even heard someone talk about it as brought up that the movie does have a sad scene that made everybody cried like little babies just like me. Damn you Pixar for making me cry, you always play with my emotions when it comes to watching your movies. But good job through for making me feel something for this movie as I will go into that later.

This is a good kids movie and even the adults will enjoy it because most adults like most Pixar films and when it comes to emotional scenes it get's to them. This may be everybody's new favorite of all time or the year, but as I said before that feels like I said it about 100 times already, I like the movie, it's enjoyable, but I think it's time to talk about the flaws and one of those flaws is about the story and some of the characters.

The problems: Every critic and every person as brought up that the story is original and Pixar is back at it's best, but hold on a minute as this story been done before? The concept has been done before but in different ways, but even when it's a little bit different it still feels the same. I know some people may not seen Herman's Head or any TV special's that's focusing on what your emotions are what it dose in your head and them as character's. This doesn't really make the movie bad and it doesn't mean you can't enjoy it, but I think you should take some consideration before praising a movie and calling it original even through it's not. Can you handle the truth?

The other thing that isn't original is the character's, now they not badly written character's or anything like that, to be honest I think they were enjoyable to watch on screen but just like what I said about the story the character's didn't feel anything new and it feels like they been taken off by other characters from cartoon's, TV shows and other animated movies. It's all for the new original merchandise that will sell like mad after everybody sees the movie. That's how business works in Pixar, they just want loads of money that's what it's all about. Now if you think I'm a dick for saying that about Pixar then well your going to hate me even more after I bring up the pointless squeal's they came release that nobody wanted but they made it anywhere because all of the merchandise. Remember Cars, you remember when people didn't really like it and then Pixar did Cars 2, and that's because of the box office hit it was and the amount of merchandise was sold. Same with the other Pixar films. I just can't stand it when these film producers people choose money over art, it's just a big insult to cinema, and yeah it's a great way to get money off from people and all this money thing I told you about many not bother you as you just want a good movie and yeah Pixar as made great movie I mean one of my favorite movies from Pixar was Toy Story and Up. But I don't think Pixar is back as they next movies are just squeal's that we as a audience never asked for just because it's all about the f**king money.

These a scene in this movie where Riley plays hockey and she's been doing it for a while now, but out of nowhere she forget's how to play and no she didn't get disinterested or unmotivated, she literally forget's how to play hockey and she's already on the ice as the game just started. She didn't lose her desire to play, she just forget's. What really would have made this movie original if the movie was just about her emotions play with her depression affect's a person, now that will show that Pixar as the balls to do that and take a step forward and break new grounds by doing that, I mean this is about her emotions and she is going through tough times. But instead the movie focus on these character's in her head that are just a copy and cut out of other character's in past movies, TV shows and cartoon's. I know it's a kids movie and they don't to make it too depressing even when it kind of is towards the end but what's the point making a movie about somebody's emotions while that person as I said before is going through tough times. Come on at least some movies have the balls to do that and not just go "Oh wait a minute we shouldn't step back a bit".

I was never bored and it's a good time watch. If you loved the movie then good for you, if you liked the movie I'm with you on that one. To those who hated the movie it's okay, you don't have to like every movie that people like and praising. Be different, be unique. As for me I will recommend it to people who love animation or just movies itself, as Inside Out is a good movie.

The story is weak, nothing relevant happens and it's the same "journey to go back home" we saw in every Pixar movie. The jokes are 100 years old, you saw them before the first season of Bugs Bunny in the 40's. The premise is flawed, the movie is about a kid beginning depression to make other kids care about her, but that disease is never mentioned, the kids will never care about something they don't even know what is. The emotion of the movie is very "pushed", one of the characters pratically begs you to cry with her. The people who gave it the Oscar must not have watched it. Expand

This film is lovably Pixar. it's brightly coloured and original and charismatic whilst also smacking you in the face with sadness and making you cry like a little girl in the theatre.

but unlike Toy Story and Up and Pixars other emotional rollercoasters, Inside Out seems to go over childrens heads a little.

All of Pixars narratives are moralistic or underlying a major theme in some way and Inside Out is no different, but with Inside Out it seems to be too subtle and too articulate and complex for the average child to fully understand and appreciate.

But that does not lessen the enjoyment of the picture overall, and I highly recommend you watch it... just bring some tissues.

First off, nicely animated and well scripted, things connect very well, which is a definite plus. Also, the other emotions (specifically Disgust and Anger) are just lovely.

Secondly, the turning point of the movie, what actually made the leap from mediocre to great was that scene where the imaginary friend is left behind, very emotional, masterfully done. That was memorable, that was a moment we all could relate to (even if we didn't have an imaginary friend). The scene illustrates so well the sacrifice every child has to make when entering adulthood.

An emotional and delightful movie!

We are not told if the emotions are controlling the little girl or simply assisting her. The separate islands they venture out to seem like they were arbitrarily created, and the fact that joy exists as the only positive emotion is a little confusing. The girl also seems to young to be undergoing such a large shift into depression, and the fact that she is depressed is never actually highlighted in the movie. The movie lacks as many jokes that are typically seen in a Pixar movie, but several scenes hit very well (ex. The look into the mom's brain). While Pixar succeeds in creating a visually appealing and well-acted film, the plot in itself seems like a reach. Expand

My seven year old said the best bit was the end credits, no joke. So this ranks down along with the weaker Pixar offerings. It's also not a feel good movie either.. Infact it's out and out emotastic. I hope this makes a ton of money because i don't like Disney inhouse beating Pixar, which has been true since Tangled. If Pixar carry on making weepies then they are gonna have to do a lot of catching up. Come on Pixar! I take my kid out to have a good time! Which reminds me... Inside Out is a talkie, probably contains the most dialogue out of any Pixar movie, probably why my daughter was bored. It really didnt feel like the movie was for kids at all. As it stands... I'd score this movie a 7/10 but since my daughter didnt love it it... Its a six. Better movie for us adults. Expand

I may only be young, but even elements of the story I couldn't relate to at all. Especially since I have moved and lived in America. It had moments of being too juvenile and it may have been for a younger audience, but I'm only 14 and I know that most teens will have gone to see this movie, also parents. As for the characters, I found Joy and Sadness to annoying. At times I wanted to claw my face out because sadness was borderline depressed and joy just needed to understand that you can't have the spotlight. It should have explored the islands more, which doesn't actually count as a spoiler cause it is featured in the trailer. Overall I just found it disappointing, especially for a Disney movie. It is different, with a really arty idea, just possibly not executed to he best ability I know Disney can do. Expand

Pixar has had a few nice features. Their animation is outstanding, But for the most part they are a little overrated. Their story lines are just so-so. Brave, Up, Cars, Cars 2, Monsters University, Ratatouille, were all too slow for kids (and for a lot of adults). Heck, to be honest, I've NEVER been blown away by any of Pixar's features. However, their movies are just good enough to make me want to see the next one.

Here we go again, another Pixar movie that relies on over the top archetypes instead of characters and has no originality whatsoever. This should be fun.

You know I grew up with Pixar back in the late 1990’s and let me tell you the kid in me wants to like them but the objective critic in me can’t stand them. The last film they made that I thoroughly enjoyed was Up and that came out back in 2009. They’re like Activision and Call of Duty now, it’s the same thing every time.

Also If you check their wikipedia page then You will see that they haven’t got anything new planned for the next 3 years. Finding Dory, Toy Story 4, Cars 3. (Wasn't the second one bad enough.)

Why not give their franchises to another animation studio to make an animated series based on these movies like Buzz lightyear of star command instead of constantly going back to the the things that we’ve all seen before. Don’t get me wrong as long as the movie is good that’s all that matters in the end. Even though Call Of Duty is the same game every year at least it’s fun. (Though Ghosts was a big disappointment)

But it seems like Pixar is trying too hard to attract a crowd of new kids without even thinking about the kids that loved them back in the 90’s. I mean Toy Story 3 was essentially Toy Story 2 again just in a different coat.

Open up the movie with a large scale action sequence that is later revealed to be a figment of someone’s imagination, introduce the idea that toys don’t last forever, There is a misunderstanding in which the toy(s) are mistakenly put in a position where the unwanted toys are supposed to be, The toys get placed in new environments meeting new characters, one of them being a jolly plump toy who wields a cane. this toy is later revealed to be an antagonist fueled by the traumatization of being abandoned by their former owner taking his anger out on others, The seemingly good hearted toy convinces the other toys to stay with promises of being loved for generations, A delusional factory setting Buzz lightyear locks up the Protagonist(s) , the protagonists enter a large scale industrial contraption where the antagonists is disposed of and left in the care of another person. That is the plot for both Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 3.

And now as if that wasn’t bad enough since Toy Story is so popular Pixar seems to think that all of their franchises should be like Toy Story. Lets take their new movie Inside Out for example. If I were to tell you that there was a Pixar character who all the other characters only exist to look out for their well being but at the same time they’re not aware of their sentience, the entire plot is affected by them moving to a different city, they also have to deal with growing up and leaving their childhood in the past, who am I talking about? I’m talking about Andy from Toy Story right? I’m also talking about Riley from Inside Out, because when you think about it they’re the exact same person.

Now if it were just the unoriginal characters I could over look this film. Unfortunately there are a lot of other things wrong with this movie. The main human character Riley doesn’t get anywhere near enough screen time. The whole movie revolves around what a person would be like if they were limited to the amount of emotions they had, but other than not getting along well with her parents we don’t get to see much of her personality. We don’t even get to know much about the people in her environment. There was one point in the film where she starts crying in class and is embarrassed that the cool kids saw her cry. I was thinking that this would make for some great social interaction but we never see them again. The movie isn’t a complete dud though, it shows that even negative emotions have their place and reason for being. It kind of reminded me about a game called Sonic Shuffle. At first everyone is angry at the antagonist Void for making people dream negative thoughts but at the end it is revealed that negative emotions give people strength and that people need to feel all sorts of emotions in order to truly experience all that life has to offer.

When all's said and done I can recommend this movie as a time waster, something for you to take your kids to. But If you are looking for something deep and meaningful then go watch something else. Overall Score 5/10

The problems that both my wife I felt were that this movie never had a real message or theme. All the great Pixar movies had a theme and message that could be summed up in a single sentence. Unfortunately Inside Out doesn't. Amy Pohler as Joy is the exact same character she was on Parks and Req. Sadness was so annoying that I felt like anger early on.

I mean the whole theme of the movie is that a memory can be both joy and sorrow. Yawn. Finally, the relationship of the parents to the girl is very lacking. The parents "need" her to be supportive of the move and problems. She must show happiness and be supportive. Then in the end the parents finally realize that maybe the kid was sad about the move. Are parents that stupid?

There were some great parts. Loved showing other people's minds and their control centers. Too bad the movie couldn't have focused on this instead of the story it picked.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My First film review on Metacritic - I'm a movie goer but I don't really care enough to comment on most.

Inside Out -

I've watched pretty much every Pixar film there is, having a young daughter means we watch anything that comes up. This years 'HOME' by dream-works my daughter is still currently obsessed with, and I've watched it well over 100 times sort-of-thing... painful but it's bearable still today, just!
I was hoping for much the same from Pixars latest offering.

For me, an Adult, this film was either a 9 or a 10. There's a lot of in-humour aimed at parents and I was happy to laugh at these parts, but my god, for a children's film, this is one onslaught of misery. My daughter finished watching this film confused and I think genuinely upset.

The plot is a growing-of-age story whereby the main character, an eleven year old girl, moves towns and loses everything that her former home had with it. The main charisma character that controls her brain alongside 'sadness' get lost in her long-term memory, and from thereon it's one bad thing happening after another to the main character as the personalities left controlling her brain fail in every situation after, while the lost items themselves stumble from one tragic loss to the next, such as losing the memory of her childhood friend (who is literally erased from existence) - I'm not keen on death as a theme within kids films, it's not easily approached and leads to uncomfortable questions.

I'm rating this film down as it's not really a kids film at all. I think of those films I watched over and over in my childhood (which haven't become sad memories now!!) and they all had that Spielberg magic, charm and adventure. This film as a film for a

What a brilliant idea I thought it was so awesome I watched the trailer several times and enjoyed every time. But the movie was a huge disappointment, it looks it is one of the movies with trailer is better than the movie itself. In the trailer all people got magic creatures called emotions in their brain, but in the movie only the main character does there is only one scene where you can see these "emotions" in the head of different people and you already seen it in the trailer. Mom and Dad characters are completely one dimensional. Even the girl looks like robot controlled by stupid crew. And why did they put in this popular psychology theory that loves to put labels on people but always no more than 4 please. I better to see how the emotions behave in different life situations than to follow how american sale manager "Joy" learns the hard way that analytic "Sorrow" also a person and could be useful sometimes. I have been a Pixar fan for years, even since my dad bought me Toy Story on VHS and me, him and my step-mother watched it in the living room on our projector. They had a good cast (minus Lewis Black. That guy just grates me), just to me it falls apart at it's story line and it's execution.

Where it falls apart for me is the characters and the lack of development they have. You just don't feel anything towards them, so you don't care for or feel any of the emotions that they are feeling. This disappointed me as with their previous film "Up", and they managed feel every range of emotion possible in the space of the first 10 minutes.

The other big problem I had with Inside Out was that the world that populate the feature with-in Riley's "psyche" were boring, bland, lifeless and unimaginative. When the 2 main characters are having navigate themselves through them, they just leave nothing memorable. To me, the worlds are literally dead and lifeless.

I have 2 positives, though they do not compare the 2 negatives I have already listed. The animation (unsurprisingly) is stunning and is the exact level you expect a Pixar animation to be at. Now to the most enjoyable part of the film in my opinion. The story revolves around the emotions residing inside of Riley's head and essentially revolves around her. The most enjoyable part of the film for me was where we showed the emotions inside the mother and fathers heads, and also during the credits scene you see inside quite a few other characters heads. It is pretty funny as well as very inventive. Shame that it is barely 5 minutes of the entire film.

I can see kids enjoying the film, but being a long standing Pixar film fan, I did not enjoy it in the slightest. I hope they do better on their next project.

Not a straight rip-off of "Herman's Head", a 90's Fox sitcom, but with a “Fear” character disturbingly similar to said TV show, it make us wonder if Inside Out isn’t just an indulgent fantasy of our love to simplify reality into stereotypes. Not a straight rip-off of "Herman's Head", a 90's Fox sitcom, but with a “Fear” character disturbingly similar to said TV show, it make us wonder if Inside Out isn’t just an indulgent fantasy of our love to simplify reality into stereotypes. Funny? Yes! Charming, oh yes! Too long? Indeed! Despite mixing an outdated psychology of emotions with contemporary concepts of mind, the biggest fault of Inside Out is overestimating its story as worth a full-length feature film. Half of the film is a round-around journey of the two main characters trying to return (without success) to their headquarters. After the fourth attempt, my daughter was like, “will the rest of the movie be like this?” When the plot solves, you feel relief it just ended, but don’t care anymore. Expand

There are some clever moments, train of thought.... eta. It is also nice to see the psychological theory behind it - BUT - it is a cartoon movie, aimed for kids - a lot of this fluff is going to go right over the kids heads and many adults.

It wasn't entertaining in my books. It had too many convenient impossible road blocks tossed up as incidenting plot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fantastic animation, good initial idea... But I have quite a few beefs with this movie, so here we go:

1. As usual, Disney paints out the "normal" person with a broad brush designed to appeal to the largest number of people, instead of giving the main character any sort of uniqueness or depth (which are "normal" in Real Life!). In comparison, Studio Ghibli's female characters are all very complex and different. You don't need to get the audience to identify with the character's every trait and thoughts. There is nothing interesting about Riley, she's clearly been constructed as the "mainstream kid", almost a blank slate, America's archetypical kid (white middle class, single child).

2. There is some lovely symbolism in the movie, but most of the story-telling that happens inside Riley's head appears completely unrelated to what is happening in Riley's reality. What does it mean that Joy and Sadness are lost in long-term memory? This is the central part of the movie, and it drags on and on, and most of its aspects don't seem to help Riley's character development.

3. Of all the core emotions they could have picked, why disgust? I mean, what about love, selfishness, or empathy? Disgust seems mostly irrelevant to the whole movie, and extending her role from protecting Riley from poisoning to social acceptance (make-up, dress etc.) is such a stretch that it makes no sense to me.

4. At the end of the movie, my 5-year-old son laughed his head off. I asked him what his favourite part was, and he said "The cat at the end! I want to watch this over and over again!". Getting into other characters' heads was the comic aspect of the movie, and the little they did (about 5 minutes altogether) was very well done and very, very funny. But keeping it to the trailer and the credits makes it look like the original ideas around the movie were discarded because they interrupted the very serious emotional tone that was supposed to drive it. There's something missing there in the pacing of humour, a missed opportunity.

Forgettable movie for an Adult...maybe a child would rise the vote a notch...but It's inferior to Ratatouille, Zootopia, Wreck-It Ralph 1, Big Hero 6, Finding Nemo or all the old school classic.

Just another road movie, this time set inside a frame story that just failed to reach me. The emotion characters are somewhere in-between worshiping and controlling a little girl who gets upset because.... her new house is dirty. A big victorian house in the most expensive city in the country. The whole movie I felt more empathy for the parents who tried to make the move comfortable for their daughter.
The whole emotions/memories world just failed to wow me. It seemed inconsistent, cheesy and reductive. Even when the worst happened and whole buildings crumbled, they just reappeared intact later on. The jokes were bland... the whole movie was.

Worst Disney movie ever! I don't know how it doesn't have any negative reviews. The premise is great, but the movie falls way short of its expectations. I think everyone who reviewed this movie only watched the previews.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This movie has a depressing core message about the death of childhood and the loss of beautiful memories. The middle part is long and painful, with too few of the hilarious moments promised in the trailer. Parents as well as tweens and teens may find it emotionally wrenching. This was a missed opportunity to explore emotions and empathy, and the film instead portrays the "end" of childhood as the death of cherished memories of imaginary friends and silliness. The best parts appear in the trailer, the last 5 minutes, and the credits. Expand

A stupid adventure of fictional people inside a girl's head repesenting each emotion. They go on a made-up adventure that has nothing to do with reality. Just a stupid plot, a dumb concept and a big disappointment. Usually animated movies can be very good, but this one was terrible. A metascore of 94? Has the world gone crazy? One of the most boring, annoying movies I've seen in a few years. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While I certainly don't think it's in kids best interest to be kept within a protective bubble and not exposed to the reality that there is suffering in life, I do think that the main principle of a "kids" animated movie should be to bring them happiness. When I brought my 6 year old daughter home my wife asked her how the film was and she just looked forward and didn't utter a word. At least warn the public that your kids are going to get a full dose of the reality blues if they go to see this film. On numerous occasions my 6 year old daughter asked me why all the characters are crying. Then it gets really awesome when the little emotion of "joy" character is down in the dark waste bin of memories with the main character's imaginary friend. She clutches the smoldering and dying memories of past happiness and sobs uncontrollably. But she does eventually make it out of this purgatory because imaginary friend sacrifices his life and slowly fades away dissolving before our eyes. But the kicker was when my kid looks at me and asks with troubled eyes what will happen when the last solid island of this girls thoughts (truth island has already died as she steals from her mother to run away from home, etc) "family island" will crumble and disappear. What are the writers sadists? To push the limits were they trying to see if they could make an Angela's ashes for little kids? I actually felt guilty taking my daughter to see this film. Expand

I only liked the pretty colors; could've looked at a box of crayons, and saved the $1.60 at Redbox. Boring!!! Answered e mails I was so disinterested. Maybe OK for a toddler.
