This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Independence Day Resurgence, or in simple terms lets make everything bigger. This movie isn't bad but at the same time not that great. With every movie the directors job is to have you invested into the character and the world. This worked well on the first Independence day because the people where every day kind of people but know with the resurgence we have alien technology and a world that's in danger, but its not our world so we don't feel anything for it. The visuals are amazing but that isn't really something to brag about in today's movie world. Without going for to long I will leave it at this, in the end it felt like I had watched an episode of Stargate. You wont be bored with this movie but you will find yourself not really thinking about it as soon as you leave the cinema.… Expand

It's basically a B-class, straight-to-dvd, intellectually decrepit fantasy from the nineties, only with better CGI. This well might be the worst sci-fi piece I've seen in the last 20 years.

Although it would be unfair to other movies to rate this movie with a better score, I must admit: I HAD TONS OF FUN WATCHING THIS MOVIE ON THE THEATER. Seriously, this is worth the money, because the action, the CGI, the visualAlthough it would be unfair to other movies to rate this movie with a better score, I must admit: I HAD TONS OF FUN WATCHING THIS MOVIE ON THE THEATER. Seriously, this is worth the money, because the action, the CGI, the visual roller-coaster, and Jeff Goldblum (he should show up in big movies more often, no?) are awesome! Unfortunately, the mystery and the charm of the first installment are pretty much absent in this second one. I guess the movie failed with these aspects because it reveals too much too fast, the futuristic touch to life on Earth and explorations in the moon made the baseline scenario and characters harder to relate, and there is no character with depth for us to really care about (I cared about Jeff Goldblum's character, but because JG is awesome, not because I got invested on the character). These flaws make of IDR a weak flick as a whole, but don't make the viewer experience any less entertaining!… Expand

I was a big fan of the original movie, with it's humor, great actors, human interest stories and heart. The special effects were top end. The sequel failed on all points. The actors from the original were truly pathetic. Jeff Goldblum had none of his humor, charm and great acting ability. Bill Pullman had none of the quality of his original performance; I was embarrassed for him. Judd Hirsh was okay, but had only a bit part. The new actors for this sequel were little more than a clique, with little interest generated.

Note, the software here did not allow me to post my number score, I tried to put down a one.

The special efforts, even in 3D, were blurred and boring, with zero quality. The darkness of the screen in most scenes ruined what little effort they did make and the 3D was wasted, it added nothing.

The original storyline was trashed, with no explanations to explain how the things we saw were occurring (I don't want to give out spoilers here). I'm shocked the same Directors were involved in this disaster of a film.

I give it one star, and that's being generous. Don't waste your money and time on it.… Expand

The original film with Will Smith I thought was quite entertaining, if a bit cheesy. You get Bill Pullman's character drumming up yet another (but somehow spontaneous) "inspiring" speech where of course all the nearby aircraft mechanics and pilots drop everything they're doing to drop their jaws in awe of his words of wisdom. Then you get a heavy dose of politically correct messages of "can't we all get along?" thrown in. It is 120 minutes of my life i will never get back.… Expand

Zero suspense, the script looks like it was writtn by a 6 year old. Formulmatic to the point of any rudimentary script writint software program could have written this formulmatic scrip with the press of a buton. did anyone watching it really think we weren't going to be victorious in spite of all odds against us. I am surprised there was not a mandate to the viewers at the end asking us to stand up and cheer while they rolled the credits with the audience giving high five's to one another. I, for one, was at the edge of my seat with white knuckles wondering if we were going to make it or not (sarcasm intended). And how can any serious actor allow himself to be in a movie where he has to read a line that actually says "now you are a true warrior". are they kidding me? And Jeff Daniels gets to say, "we didn't win last time because of luck, we won because of our resolve" OMG, make it stop, please!!!! I guess it is a good movie, if you are 5 yeasr old. The escapr from the alien space craft as the exit was closing was very cool in the first movie. Doing the exact same thing the second time, just was not the same thing. Really couldn't they find anyone out ther wjo could actually write a screenplay?… Expand

Its not as bad as the lots of reviews say. It had a lot of expectations and came up well short of them. So it got slammed by critics much harder than it should. The character that was suppose to provide comic relief as a goofy side kick was instead just annoying. The actor that played Will Smiths son was awful, and his entire character was pointless. Some critics would make you feel like this movie was the biggest flop of 2016. Not the case. I thought this movie was a good deal better than Warcraft and X-men. If you go in expecting nothing but an action movie, you'll get what your are looking for, if you are expecting suspense and comedy your going to be disappointed.… Expand

It's a very-very bad movie. Nothing to compare with a first film. In 1996 Independence day was a big step forward for blockbusters. ID 2 - is a stupid copy/past work. Don't spend your money for his $#!+.

Childhood ruined.

At 11 years of age, ID4 was my first "grow-up" movie experience, going with a class mate to see a movie that wasn't a cartoon or obviously aimed at a younger audience (Mrs. Doubtfire etc). I was blown away then and IChildhood ruined.

At 11 years of age, ID4 was my first "grow-up" movie experience, going with a class mate to see a movie that wasn't a cartoon or obviously aimed at a younger audience (Mrs. Doubtfire etc). I was blown away then and I still enjoy re-watching the original to this day.

Now enter this steaming pile of hippo turd-fiesta. The dialogue, which I so fondly remember as funny and on-the-spot from 96, was replaced with generic, unfunny and mostly all out terrible. Most of the actors returning where screaming for a better plot. Bill Pullman: genereic PTSD THEY ARE COMING! The ever so charming Judd Hirch was shoehorned in just so we could point and say "that guy, Davids father", with a subplot that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie before magically appearing with his son just as the final scene unfolds. Vicia A Fox just thrown in so she could die in a vain attempt at drama towards the son of Captain Hiller, a character free of development and not someone to care the least about. And of course Jeff Goldblum. So funny in a quirky way, reduced to a monotonous idiot with a script that doesn't know what to do with him so he just tries to recapture the magic from the 90s and fails miserably.

All in all I shouldn't be surprised. Roland Emmerich makes bad movies and ID4 was the exception. This was not. I give it a 3 just for the sake of initial nostalgia and a couple of decent action sequences.… Expand

Alright so let me start off by making a confession. I have never seen independence day before so I went into this movie with no expectation whatsoever. I hate popcorn style action flicks like transformers so naturally if i knew that I probably wouldn't have gone to see this but i went with a friend who likes that kind of movie and has seen the first one and he enjoyed it. Jeff goldblum gave the best performance however everyone else felt like they were just there. The guy who plays the doctor felt like the jar jar binks of independence day he was so annoying and contributed some of the worse dialogue of the entire movie. There is a weird subplot with a bunch of kids who lost there mother that I really didn't get or feel for when they were in trouble because it was executed so poorly. So between terrible dialogue bad characters and poor direction makes this the worst summer movie to come out yet… Expand

Even in the Popcorn Movie oeuvre this film is a major disappointment: Brainless, soulless, insipid, insulting to one's intelligence. But boy are the SFX great! (Who cares.)

It's twenty years too late, for one. Truly despicable, for two. Films created specifically to launch other films, that is. Cobbing an idea from "Falling Skies," "ID: R" finds a friendly ally to fight an intergalactic war against the Universe-Hopping-To-Suck-Your-Planet-Core aliens. You know, kinda like the Borg, but far less believable. I wonder how the alien light drives work fueled by magma. Must be some special gas, er, magma tank to withstand 11,000 F molten metal. Maybe the magma cools. Oh, I see. It's really a drive running on iron. Guess these aliens haven't figured how to mine iron.

Then there's a queen. All that's missing from those scenes is Ripley shouting, "Get away from my planet's core, you ****

Brent Spiner is ecstatic. Lot's more screen time, and the final word. The rest - Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch the biggest perpetrators - either phone it in or sleepwalk through a story so predictable eyes flutter with drowsiness waiting for it to unfold. And how did Hirsch, all alone, find his son in that huge desert? Magic, I suppose.

There's much to be said for brainless entertainment where one allows the idiocy to run down the back like water on a duck. Then there's braindead entertainment such as this useless, bland sequel to a better, far more fun film. Attend a showing if you must. You've been forewarned… Expand

They’re just there to carry the story on, but we barely get to know them. Their interactions are neither that excellent, but the actors did a great job to visualize their characters – but what a waste of talented people! Still; it’s one heck of a ride with a massive amount of great action & sci-fi, and it’s without any doubt fun to finally see the classic characters back on the big screen. But what’s the fun in a film where the story is rushed, badly written and full of expositions – nothing! It’s like they came up with the basic premise meanwhile shooting the film! There are no stakes, no real want-to to win, not even to the action. It just drags along. Even though – I did enjoy the film form an action/sci-fi point of view. It's one messy, but fun ride.

The reason is naked inside the ad was placed in every corner, you know! Every corner ...... if aliens were able to read "Thank you for using QQ". qq is an angry penguin do? I know that the critics have been lambasting this movie for a week, but I figured I had now been inoculated against major disappointment and what the heck. I caught the 1:30 matinee in a mostly empty theater with only a few, elderly retired couples. I guess they had nothing better to do either on a Monday afternoon. I found the movie mildly entertaining, much like a Transformers movie, which also promises wanton, unnecessary destruction on a global scale. Neither movies, this or the Transformers franchise, makes any pretenses of sophistication, pathos or intellectually redeeming qualities like The Martian or Interstellar. Jeff Goldblum is funny as is Judd Hirsch. Brent Spiner probably single-handedly carried this movie and of course he sets up the sequel at the end. I just hope they don't take another 20 years for ID4 III. I won't live that long.… Expand

Most of the good in this movie comes from Jeff Goldbloom, Bill Pullman, and the cast of returning characters. As expected with Emmerich's previous work, the special effects are on point and it has some good scenes. In terms of everything else, I wonder just how stupid the script writers thought audiences would be? Its like they took all logic and believably and left it all in the first 20 minutes of start time. The story is mired with plot holes and inconsistencies like for instance, how President Whitmore can barely walk in the beginning of the film but then by the time chaos ensues and he shaves his beard, hes fully functional again and can man foreign alien technology and how the Queen alien can survive full sized fusion bombs being thrown at her but her shields fall from minor weapon fire. It also doesn't help that the new characters are as dull and boring as can be, the only decently interesting character was the Warlord. Even Maika Monroe, who i enjoyed in "It Follows" was bad and I still wonder how Liam Hemsworth has maintained a career outside of The Hunger Games as he was next to awful in this. Not only are the characters bad, most of their dialogue was worse. There was also next to no character development from so much being crammed into a 2 hour movie. While I will say this movie was decent to a extent, I felt alot of this movie lacked the heart and dare I say, emotion that made Independence Day a good film. I left this film missing Will Smith's charisma and Bill Pullman's emotion that made the first one matter to me.… Expand

I really wanted to love this film. Unfortunately, it fell extremely short of any goal. But it never did. The acting was far less impressive. I place more blame on the casting crew than on the actors themselves - they did try. Where was the mystery? the suspense? The anticipation? the call to arms across the screen into the hearts of the audience?!? Everything that I loved about the first was completely absent in the sequel. And what the f*#k is up with the obsession with diversity?? Suddenly I see why people oppose affirmative action. Whatever. I'm mad. I want my $15 back.… Expand

Argh, how I missed Will Smith in this movie. Actually the director took the same storyline, same old actors, but what we see is cheap and easily made with no love and no creativity. Let me preface my remarks by stating I was at the midnight screening for the original Independence Day in a jam packed theater twenty years ago. It became one of my favorite movies as I must have watched it a million times. It became one of my favorite movies as I must have watched it a million times. I can recite just about every line in the original. When I heard they were making ID2 I couldn't wait as I tried to get every bit of information I could. I saw it today. How in the world can anyone connected to this project look at themselves in the mirror. Without question it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. How can you take something so special and turn it into a computer generated CGI video game. There is nothing to like here. The script is totally lame! The acting terrible. And the directing possibly the worst I have ever seen. You care nothing for any character. When you make a movie there is supposed to be a story. Sadly, there isn't any. They took the original and turned into a video game with explosions. Giving this movie a rating of one is stretching it. Roland should be ashamed of this utter garbage.… Expand

Independence Day: Resurgence is your basic dumb summer action movie that dose it's job well of entertaining you, but the flaws is something that shouldn't be ignored despite people telling you to ignore them.

The effect's (for the most part) was pretty solid and Jeff Goldblum being the best part of this movie is no surprise. You just can't get enough of the Goldblum, as he always got this welcoming presence to him in every movie he's in. I was never bored while watching the movie and this is the kind of the film that would have been great if it was released in the 90's like the first movie, as this would have fitted right in.

Unfortunately, "Resurgence" misses a lot of the charm and charisma that the first film had, as the squeal is just mindless entertainment and if you enjoy those type of films then you most likely going to like this one. The amount of coincidences that happens in this movie is quite unbelievable, with character's coming across each other by accident or how the problems are solved was way too easy. And it's attempt of humor was a bit awkward and force, but that's mostly because the movie doesn't want to be too dark or serious for audience members, so the humor is thrown in there to lighten up the mood.

Overall rating: "Independence Day: Resurgence" is a sloppy but enjoyable movie that's only mindless fun....kinda like the first movie in a way.… Expand

This marks a significant change in film making since the mid-90s and is specifically a feature of modern blockbusters.

There is not a single character in this film. There are cardboard cutouts of character types who are given a two-beat backstory that the audience is somehow supposed to care about instantly.

The first ID spent a full half of the movie introducing audiences to the people in the story. It raised the stakes and made the later actiony bits mean something. IDR does none of that and leaves you feeling hollow about the whole affair.… Expand

We're talking about a film of 1996 that stipulated the directives for the upcoming blockbusters based in the invasions of aliens created by Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin. It was the model for many of the current movies, those empty but entertaining films that are the daily bread in American films, too much CGI, combined with some comedy and drama, the perfect summer film, though, that magic has begun to agonize. "Resurgence" lands in the worldwide film market as a sequel in which in addition to not be present the soul of the original, Will Smith, it's responsible for presenting a constant self-parody and not funny at all that makes it easy to find the myriad of lacks of which owns.

"We Had Twenty Years to Prepare", states the tag line at the top of the poster, but were it really twenty years?. After the catastrophic event in 1996, Earth has managed to reinvigorate its weaknesses and they have decided to unify all nations in order to preserve human life - a help for the writers, they take for granted to United States going to take the decisions – creating contraptions of high technology, such as the conception of the speed of the ships or the defiance of gravity , What premise!. "So Did They", one fortified attack and more resistant returns to Earth, with powerful strategies that will put at risk millions of lives, again.

It's not correct to affirm that "Resurgence" disappoints, since at no time it promised more than excessive action - a kind of "Star Wars" recycled-, aliens - with notable references of the genre -, destruction of cities - "2012", also directed by himself - and abundant mentions of its predecessor which give the audience a tone of nostalgia.

Roland Emmerich is a film director that started his career in his native country Germany, with "Franzmann" in 1979 and later with "The Noah's Ark Principle" in 1984, which was accused him of recreating American films in Germany. Roland took the decision to try to sneak into cinematic mecca of the world, and he succeeded it, opening his experienced curriculum vitae with "Universal Soldier" in 1992 with Jean-Claude Van Damme. He was gradually settling in major film studios with projects such as "The High Crusade" and "Stargate" both released in 1994. Acquiring knowledge, seniority and expertise in the sci-fi genre, it was in 1996 in where his greatest success was evidenced, Emmerich debuts with Will Smith "Independence Day". He already established as one of the directors most requested in Hollywood launches "The Day After Tomorrow" in 2004, "2012" in 2009 and a number of projects that had not too much impact, but which were of great help in the construction of a CV so honorary so disconcerting. It's in 2016 when the sequel to his project more outstanding it is released, the final collection of each of his projects and even though have not been praised by movie critics, these are loved and remembered by many viewers, especially his grand debut in the genre.

Undoubtedly, special effects are the strong point. With amazing visual effects - obviously, executed by CGI and green screens - transform a boring narrative journey in a visual show "Star Wars"-style. In one scene of the film, a spaceship arrives on Earth to pick up David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) and his team, at that time in which the ship lands, my brain generated a reaction of unreality, i.e., I thought that the scene was completely fictitious and utopian, but not by its sparkling effects, it was an involuntary reaction that that was not possible. Something unaware to the CGI. Space battles, imposing aliens, an exciting opening scene and much apocalyptic disaster is accomplished in its greatest splendour.

A plot quite simple and poor, linear and boring with a development for nothing worthy of its predecessor, adorned with stunning visual effects that do not save it of a long and tense space travel. The yawns were unavoidable. The script is full of imperative exclamations; It has not got dramatic base nor much less to real. But the worst were the comic touches, which gradually were horrible, immature and exasperating, destroying to one of the most endearing characters of the original. The script gets all the shortcomings of American projects. The new cast is pathetic, they have no charisma, they have no chemistry, and with total humility and respect there were too many times in where I laughed. Liam H., Maika M. and Usher are some of the new crew.

The soundscape is clearly inferior than the visual. Harald Kloser and Thomas Wanker were responsible for creating the correct musical ambience that, although not shine in the slightest . It was not bad, but it was standard, something that does not help at all.

An unnecessary sequel is added to the list of "Unwanted projects" and although its effects are amazing, narrative and acting charge of its predecessor has gone to the moon. Finally, "ID: 3" already has been announced and we hope that Will Smith is in this.… Expand

-a man yells in chinese at liam hemsworth
-liam hemsworth & friends steal a squadron of alien spaceships from inside the mothership and fly them with 0 problems, until...
-the giant queen alien chases a school bus around the desert
-at which point they can no longer fly their hijacked UFOs
-they kill the queen by shooting her in the butt
-the new, sphere aliens ask Lt. Commander Data to "kick ass"

This film I don’t think will match any of those. It’s a film 20 years in the making and it wasn’t worth it and please do not make the Independence Day 3 that you alluded to in the final scene, because that sounded even more ridiculous. I think we have a wasted opportunity here in terms of expansion of the Independence Day universe. "Safe" remakes are a disease in the film industry that needs to be eradicated.

The over-reliance on science fiction tropes with no proper story to back it up really messed things up in my opinion. If they just looked at some of the short films that are available on You Tube and made a movie based on that they could have made something better.

I can't say that I will watch any prequel/sequel in the future. This goes on my list of abandoned franchises which includes Harry Potter, X-Men, Star Wars, Spider Man, and anything based on a "Young Adult Novel".… Expand

When the first film came out to home video i binge watched it as a child from the corny speech's and quirks to even the more casual "Merica' **** yeah" moments it was truly a memorable movie whether we remembered of by heart Bill Pullmans " Today we celebrate our Independence Day" speech or Randy Quaid's "up yours" to the alien race, we all have those moments from the original that give us chills even today. Independence Day 2: Resurgence however is the complete opposite so much so that even after watching the film in cinema with friends i have to now reconfirm my knowledge of the film because of how truly forgettable the entire film is.

In Independence Day 2 we launch 20 years into the future in a time where human technology has advanced to become on par with 1996's aliens technology and where Roland Emmerich has forgotten to write a good film. The film center's on Jake and about 12 other characters give or take as you struggle to find out who is supposed to be the main character and which plot arc's are actually relevant to the story. The main problem with the film is that it has no build up to what happens and doesn't earn it's shocks and plot twists from the audience as everyone is already aware from even the earliest trailers and the lack of any real tension and stakes that America is going to win once again.

In the end Independence day 2 is an absolute mess with little to no concept as to whether or not it wants to go complete comedy or complete drama, staring Hollywood's newest batch of A-holes in a sequel baiting train wreck. Please do not watch this movie, watch the original instead and save your hard earned dollars for the time being on something more worthy of your time.… Expand

The original film was admittedly dumb, and considering Roland Emmerich’s filmography IIndependence Day: Resurgence is here, and it would seem with the direction they went that Independence Day may have been better if it hadn’t had a sequel. The original film was admittedly dumb, and considering Roland Emmerich’s filmography I didn’t go in expecting this film to be thought provoking, but Independence Day: Resurgence lacks the impactful moments the first one had. Independence Day: Resurgence is full of cliches, features weak characters, and lacks the iconic moments of the original. It is sad to say but given the filmography of Roland Emmerich, the fact that this movie isn’t very good isn’t a surprise.
The original Independence Day wasn’t very original, but it found a way to surpass it’s generic approach with entertaining acting and storytelling. However, Independence Day: Resurgence loses some of that charm, and ends up being even more generic. The story takes a radical departure from the realistic approach of the first one, and puts the audience in a super technologically advanced earth. The film is also hurt by the lack of charismatic leads, who have been replaced by young more dull actors.
The problem is partially that the actors aren’t all that good, whether that’s a lack of direction or a lack of ability is up for debate. That being said the actors are only part of the problem, as even if they were great the characters are one dimensional. Another major problem is that the original film was a perfect example of dumb fun, where it was funny and frankly dumb, the sequel is just as dumb, if not more and half as funny. The end result is when a major character dies or anything happens in this film it’s hard to care.
The lack of care for major moments resonates as the ultimate disappointment of Independence Day: Resurgence. Even if you hate Independence Day you can’t deny that when Bill Pullman delivers his speech, everybody watching gets a little emotional, and there are various other moments from that film that resonate. There are next to none of these moments in Independence Day: Resurgence. In the end Independence Day: Resurgence is boring because it’s not emotionally gripping, and just trugs along.
Independence Day: Resurgence is in essence a sequel made purely for the profit, that departs from what made the first film so special. The sequel is inferior to the original in most aspects, and in some areas doesn’t even feel like a sequel to Independence Day. The characters are one dimensional, the story is generic and cliched, the dialogue is weak, the film is incredibly dumb, but admittedly the special effects are amazing. In the end if you like action and want a release where you can go and just shut your brain off, then this is for you, otherwise you may be disappointed.… Expand

Those cheesy one-liners, simple tactical maneuvers (ID4: let's give the aliens a virus!), and questionable governmental decisions are back and just as goofy in the modern age. Brent Spiner's role as the main nutso-scientist really shines. It's as though the people who are saying bad things about this movie just don't "get it", and perhaps they haven't watched first one in awhile. IDR is exactly what I expected, a quirky film that doesn't take itself too seriously, while getting the old crew back together. I'll be going to see it multiple times in theaters.… Expand

That is all it was ever supposed to be. It was not supposed to have a deep plot. It was supposed to be cheezy at points.

The only things I mark against it are the obvious inconsistencies from the real movie. For instance, Brent Spiner's character was not in a coma in the last movie he actually died, and they never explain that. Also unlike the last movie where all the alien ships lose power and fall the main ship is able to fly off despite the others losing power.… Expand

A great movie. I loved it. No reason for people to hate it. It's a damn disaster movie, not a documentary! I loved it in 3D. I will buy the DVD when it comes out.

The first movie was art. Every detail was painstakingly prepared and executed. The first movie was perfectly written and directed. The sequel, unfortunately, was a disaster. I will outline for you WHY Independence DayPainfully bad.

The first movie was art. Every detail was painstakingly prepared and executed. The first movie was perfectly written and directed. The sequel, unfortunately, was a disaster.

I will outline for you WHY Independence Day Resurgence was horrible:

1) Poor storyline. The plot was absolute garbage. Not even remotely realistic.

2) No suspense. You can clearly see what's going to happen. The movie literally spoils itself.

3) Reckless directing. An alien chasing a schoolbus around the desert? Was the director on crack?

4) In the first movie Earth won thanks to cleverness and ingenuity - neither of which were present in the sequel.

5) The first movie attempted to emulate the workings of the US government at least to some degree. In the sequel, there's a trigger happy female President who gets everyone, including herself killed. She was as reckless as the director.

6) Spiner manages to pick up some of Roland Emmerich's slack but it isn't enough to save the movie.

It really felt as if Emmerich was TRYING to make a lousy movie.

I absolutely loved Independence Day. And I absolutely hated Independence Day Resurgence.

Save your money this movie sucked big time.… Expand

This movie is a huge disappointment.

There are too many subplots that lead no make. I did not feel the sorrow that Will Smith's son was supposed to feel when his mother died. I did not feel the love between Chris and the president'sThis movie is a huge disappointment.

The dialogue is horrible. The acting was bad. The CGI looked cartoonish. It makes the whole film look fake because it isn't quality CGI.

And the ending made no sense. So they steal alien ships, take down the alien queen's shield, destroy her weapon, and then the queen suddenly realizes that she can control the ships. I won't even get into it. It's stupid.… Expand

I did not see it in 3d very few places for that. looks almost like they stole a scene from the movie 2012. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dear Lord Jesus that was one stupid movie. I was gasping and rolling my eye in disgust so much I felt bad for my brother sitting next to me. But it was just that bad, I couldn't stop. I wish I could tell you all the problems with it, but there were so many I don't know where to start. But let me try. First there was the fact that the entire world had been rebuilt in the 20 years since the first invasion. Seemed a bit of a stretch. But they didn't stop there, no they built these amazing facilities that alone would have been difficult to build in that time (in addition to rebuilding all the cities). And man, you should have seen Washington DC. Skyscrapers everywhere. Then they had this massive defense shield network in orbit around the earth and on the moon and on other planets. Give me a break. 20 years? Maybe more like a hundred.

Then there were the characters. None were engaging at all. I thought the Asian girl was hot. But the last scene of the movie with her and all her fellow fighter pilots standing in a line made me think of her as a Power Ranger.

Dialogue was just plain dumb.

The main alien was a knockoff from the movie Aliens.

The most important explosion that wins the entire battle, was like cut out. I know I blinked, but damn, I should have seen something.

I could go on and on. The plot was just silly when you weren't falling into it's holes.

Suffice it to say, I'm glad my ticket cost less than $6 for some reason. 8 pm showing. Maybe the studio was giving discounts because it's so bad. Almost worth that much.… Expand

I would say Red Box it but its such a forgettable and cliche cash grab of a film that you're better off saving your money and not even seeing it at all. Huge disappointment. I give it 3/10 just because the SFX are very well done...that's really about it.… Expand

I really enjoyed this movie. If you liked the first one, you'll like this one. Was it as good as the first? No. But it was still a fun action movie. I honestly believe those hating on it either didn't really see it or have ADD. With what wasI really enjoyed this movie. If you liked the first one, you'll like this one. Was it as good as the first? Absolutely amazing movie. Truly a nice follow up to the original. It was a very fast paced movie and got going from the very beginning. Special effects were among the best I've seen. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Saw the film yesterday at a double feature knowing nothing about the plot of the new film. Now that I'm sure it will be one of the Epic fails of Hollywood history, there may some nostalgic value to the ticket stub

like the summary says, ... " Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ ...

..except of course, for Jeff Goldblum, with a new love interest - (I guess there wasn't still some love there..) and this IMHO was the main flaw - they made up an imaginary earth where (because of the previous alien invasion) all countries live together in peace, and we have outposts on Jupiter and nearby planets , including bases on the moon, all amazingly accomplished in only 20 years! ( Alien invasions might be good for us?)

So this time its jets outfitted with alien weaponry, and US soldiers with laser weapons - it is clearly Star Wars envy! And therefore it goes from being a disaster movie to episode one of the new fantasy story where we learn how mankind goes from a peace loving species (organic life form) to an invading alien ass kicker who will boldly go where no man has gone before, to kill aliens with their own technology while they sleep - courtesy of the iBeachball from space and a long dead alien race.

Episode 2 Revenge .... Now we'll be the aliens taking over planets and consuming all their resources and polluting them at the same time - Watch out the humans are coming!… Expand

Okay, so apparently, Independence Day: Resurgence is actually a thing, can you believe it!? I remember first seeing the original and being completely blown away, it's all anyone seemed to talk about. And now the sequel is here, and it's onceOkay, so apparently, Independence Day: Resurgence is actually a thing, can you believe it!? I remember first seeing the original and being completely blown away, it's all anyone seemed to talk about. And now the sequel is here, and it's once again directed by Roland Emmerich and has the cast of Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth and unfortunately, there's no Will Smith or Mae Whitman, but there is Bill Pullman.

So, how good is the movie then? Well, it's one big loud CGI-fest with so much corny dialogue, so pretty much exactly like the first one, in almost every way. You see, while the first movie had charisma and energy, this film has none of that, this is just mindless fun. To be honest, it really makes me miss Will Smith for this film, since he was what made the first film so great. His replacement is so bland and so dull and Liam Hemsworth doesn't bring anything new to the table for me. You know what the best part of this film is? Jeff Goldblum. He actually feels like he is enjoying this movie and is a lot of fun. I also wonder why Maika Monroe was chosen to play the president's daughter when in the original, she was played by Mae Whitman, who is a really great actress right now.

So, this movie is fun, the CG is sometimes awesome, but it does suffer from having so much stuff on the screen at once. However, one of the biggest problems with this movie, though, is the massive abundance of characters. In the theatre, I was surprised by the amount of times a new character was introduced. Also, Brent Spiner was back in this film and he had way too much screen time. This movie also had one of the most on-the-nose set-ups for Independence Day 3, I was so shocked when watching it. Overall, though, this movie was fun, but it just didn't have that sense of urgency that the first movie had, and for that I am going to give this movie a 6, because it was watchable but nothing compared to the original.… Expand

DON'T PAY FOR 3D! It was pointless, the movie didn't seem 3D at all. Yeah this was pretty bad & aimless...even the special effects weren't that great. The opening attack to earth was creative conceptually, intense, and visually amazing to boot. I don't fully agree with the "critic consensus" that this film "lacks emotional heft" because of the following: 1) Several characters died. 2) They came to the brink of annihilation. 3) Each character had motivation and determination which pumped-you up. The film was fast paced, but many movies are today, but in-turn there were no boring moments. Also, they overcame the enemy in a believable way. I am iffy about the reference to a possible sequel since it seems like a bigger bite than they can chew. To wrap-up, I enjoyed this movie a lot, and the only regret I have is that I didn't see it in IMAX!… Expand
