Pure disgusting, filthy, trivial, ridiculous, junk & trash. Grotesque, not deliberately, not funny, stupid. Take only audio-track and make it play on a Dolby system, the rest is really sh*t.

The scriptwriting is extremely predictable, the action sequence is very cliché. Despite the fact that this is a movie about fighting aliens, the level of absurdity and messiness of the action sequence is beyond unbearable. The acting was pretty terrible throughout the film as well. The only thing saving this film from a complete flop is that there is still some fun in watching it, I did feel like I was sort of on the edge of my seat, but for the time being, it does not live up to its predecessor by any measures. Total disappointment. If I were you, don't bother buying a ticket to watch it in the cinema, just wait for it to be broadcasted on television. Expand

It became one of my favorite movies as I must have watched it a million times. I can recite just about every line in the original. When I heard they were making ID2 I couldn't wait as I tried to get every bit of information I could. I saw it today. How in the world can anyone connected to this project look at themselves in the mirror. Without question it is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. How can you take something so special and turn it into a computer generated CGI video game. There is nothing to like here. The script is totally lame! The acting terrible. And the directing possibly the worst I have ever seen. You care nothing for any character. When you make a movie there is supposed to be a story. Sadly, there isn't any. They took the original and turned into a video game with explosions. Giving this movie a rating of one is stretching it. Roland should be ashamed of this utter garbage. Expand

I was not made to care about anything in this film. Painfully bad.

The first movie was art. Every detail was painstakingly prepared and executed. The first movie was perfectly written and directed. The sequel, unfortunately, was a disaster.

I will outline for you WHY Independence Day Resurgence was horrible:

1) Poor storyline. The plot was absolute garbage. Not even remotely realistic.

2) No suspense. You can clearly see what's going to happen. The movie literally spoils itself.

3) Reckless directing. An alien chasing a schoolbus around the desert? Was the director on crack?

4) In the first movie Earth won thanks to cleverness and ingenuity - neither of which were present in the sequel.

5) The first movie attempted to emulate the workings of the US government at least to some degree. In the sequel, there's a trigger happy female President who gets everyone, including herself killed. She was as reckless as the director.

6) Spiner manages to pick up some of Roland Emmerich's slack but it isn't enough to save the movie.

It really felt as if Emmerich was TRYING to make a lousy movie.

I absolutely loved Independence Day. And I absolutely hated Independence Day Resurgence.

Save your money this movie sucked big time.

Unfortunately, it fell extremely short of any goal. The scenes were scattered without logical or cinematographical cohesion; It was put together in a sort of quickly-built Frankenstein of a movie that everyone hoped would miraculously spring into some kind of life. But it never did. The acting was far less impressive. I place more blame on the casting crew than on the actors themselves - they did try. Where was the mystery? the suspense? The anticipation? the call to arms across the screen into the hearts of the audience?!? Everything that I loved about the first was completely absent in the sequel. And what the f*#k is up with the obsession with diversity?? Suddenly I see why people oppose affirmative action. Whatever. I'm mad. I want my $15 back. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This b-style reboot lost its way somewhere between too much main characters with complex relations, unimaginative punch lines ("definitely... bigger than the last one"), absence of good (acted) humor - Will Smith style - and a huge patriotistic plot line with of course America saving the whole damn bunch altogether.
Where its predecessor had its good moments with a lively mix between sci-fi and horror, (for the time) outstanding visual effects and being generally a "new kind" of movie, Independence Day: Resurgence feels more like a zompy resurrection from a movie which has died from old, but good, age.

- - - - -
-- Having to see the old movie beforehand in order to understand all the character relations
-- Too much (main) characters
-- Gravity tricks: which seem nice, but for the more alert viewer feel completely wrong.
-- Patriotistic plot line forced upon the viewer in a Chili Sauce thick montage scene where natives in small huts, huddled around candlelight listen on shortwave radio to the powerful words of the almighty saving-the-day American president
-- Nukes: they solve everything
-- With the introduction of a larger ship, also comes the introduction of larger aliens -like an Alien Queen- which, somehow, becomes extremely interested in flipping a school bus full of children instead of steering her mothership and sticking to her earth devouring plan.
- - - - -

+++++
++ Introduction of a friendly and highly evolved alien species
++ Realistic cloud dynamics from incoming mothership
+++++

-a man yells in chinese at liam hemsworth
-liam hemsworth & friends steal a squadron of alien spaceships from inside the mothership and fly them with 0 problems, until...
-the giant queen alien chases a school bus around the desert
-at which point they can no longer fly their hijacked UFOs
-they kill the queen by shooting her in the butt
-the new, sphere aliens ask Lt. Commander Data to "kick ass"

the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pure Crapola.

Even in the Popcorn Movie oeuvre this film is a major disappointment: Brainless, soulless, insipid, insulting to one's intelligence. But boy are the SFX great! (Who cares.)

It's twenty years too late, for one. Truly despicable, for two. Films created specifically to launch other films, that is. Cobbing an idea from "Falling Skies," "ID: R" finds a friendly ally to fight an intergalactic war against the Universe-Hopping-To-Suck-Your-Planet-Core aliens. You know, kinda like the Borg, but far less believable. I wonder how the alien light drives work fueled by magma. Must be some special gas, er, magma tank to withstand 11,000 F molten metal. Maybe the magma cools. Oh, I see. It's really a drive running on iron. Guess these aliens haven't figured how to mine iron.

Then there's a queen. All that's missing from those scenes is Ripley shouting, "Get away from my planet's core, you ****

Brent Spiner is ecstatic. Lot's more screen time, and the final word. The rest - Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch the biggest perpetrators - either phone it in or sleepwalk through a story so predictable eyes flutter with drowsiness waiting for it to unfold. And how did Hirsch, all alone, find his son in that huge desert? Magic, I suppose.

There's much to be said for brainless entertainment where one allows the idiocy to run down the back like water on a duck. Then there's braindead entertainment such as this useless, bland sequel to a better, far more fun film. Attend a showing if you must. You've been forewarned

Childhood ruined.

At 11 years of age, ID4 was my first "grow-up" movie experience, going with a class mate to see a movie that wasn't a cartoon or obviously aimed at a younger audience (Mrs. Doubtfire etc). I was blown away then and I still enjoy re-watching the original to this day.

Now enter this steaming pile of hippo turd-fiesta. The dialogue, which I so fondly remember as funny and on-the-spot from 96, was replaced with generic, unfunny and mostly all out terrible. Most of the actors returning where screaming for a better plot. Bill Pullman: genereic PTSD THEY ARE COMING! The ever so charming Judd Hirch was shoehorned in just so we could point and say "that guy, Davids father", with a subplot that has nothing to do with the rest of the movie before magically appearing with his son just as the final scene unfolds. Vicia A Fox just thrown in so she could die in a vain attempt at drama towards the son of Captain Hiller, a character free of development and not someone to care the least about. And of course Jeff Goldblum. So funny in a quirky way, reduced to a monotonous idiot with a script that doesn't know what to do with him so he just tries to recapture the magic from the 90s and fails miserably.

All in all I shouldn't be surprised. Roland Emmerich makes bad movies and ID4 was the exception. This was not. I give it a 3 just for the sake of initial nostalgia and a couple of decent action sequences.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first movie was not exactly great, but it was good enough to act as a jumping pad for a better sequel. The problem is that the second movie would need to be more intelligent than the 1st for it to make sense and not be written off as just a heartless action flick with no story. Unfortunately, the makers of the second film opted for the quick cash route and left the story hopefuls rolling their eyes.

I could not see past the terrible writing/directing. For one, the main plot is not thought out at all. All they did was make the bad guy bigger and gave them more guns like a Dragonball Z story. It was worse than the new Star Wars which was a travesty simply due to its lineage. It simply didnt make sense that a extremely powerful alien species, who have destroyed countless other species around the universe, decide to bring their only weakness to the surface instead of just placing her in orbit from across the galaxy. The actions of the queen herself were also asinine and made no sense. Imagine the king or general of an army taking off on their own during the fight... Especially after learning that there was a real threat to them nearby... these are not the actions of an intelligent specie, these are the kind of things you see in a Pee Wee football.

At least we can put this series to rest. It stinks.

With Independence Day: Resurgence, Twentieth Century Fox managed to insult even more greatly than the first instalment the intelligence of its spectators. Who would have thought this was possible ?

Even though I am not a militarist type of person, I found the most insulting aspect of this movie was towards the military as they are depicted in the movie, from the cap wearing pilot in space cause it looks more in contact with the average joe to the depiction of the disheveled general.

The cynicism of the depiction of each character, or maybe it is the utter talentlessness of the writers, or the lacklustre storytelling of the director, this piece of garbage is the reason Hollywood is slowly dying.

To think this movie actually had a positive financial impact for its producers makes me sick to my stomach, recompensing the lack of vision and mediocrity of people responsible for this who still develop the kind of movies that takes its spectators for stupid fools.

Shame on you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Dear Lord Jesus that was one stupid movie. I was gasping and rolling my eye in disgust so much I felt bad for my brother sitting next to me. But it was just that bad, I couldn't stop. I wish I could tell you all the problems with it, but there were so many I don't know where to start. But let me try. First there was the fact that the entire world had been rebuilt in the 20 years since the first invasion. Seemed a bit of a stretch. But they didn't stop there, no they built these amazing facilities that alone would have been difficult to build in that time (in addition to rebuilding all the cities). And man, you should have seen Washington DC. Skyscrapers everywhere. Then they had this massive defense shield network in orbit around the earth and on the moon and on other planets. Give me a break. 20 years? Maybe more like a hundred.

Then there were the characters. None were engaging at all. I thought the Asian girl was hot. But the last scene of the movie with her and all her fellow fighter pilots standing in a line made me think of her as a Power Ranger.

Dialogue was just plain dumb.

The main alien was a knockoff from the movie Aliens.

The most important explosion that wins the entire battle, was like cut out. I know I blinked, but damn, I should have seen something.

I could go on and on. The plot was just silly when you weren't falling into it's holes.

Suffice it to say, I'm glad my ticket cost less than $6 for some reason. 8 pm showing. Maybe the studio was giving discounts because it's so bad. Almost worth that much.

On the otherThe first one in '96 was a massive must see event of the summer/year and long awaited return to a sub-genre that had been somewhat gone from the screen for twenty years.  It was huge, but also dumb as hell.  Not a good movie. On the other hand the last big movie of its kind from nineteen years earlier "Close Encounters" was an intelligent and mysterious alien invasion story with an intelligence behind and in front of the camera (10 rating). "Independence Day" was basically camp masquerading as semi-serious with stupid half ass jokes delivered by a second rate cast and helmed by a German fanboy director without an understanding for the complexities of language, American politics and culture, much less… far less, character psychology. It did have spirit though!  (5 rating)
This sequel was so obviously concocted purely to cash in on a former hit.  What sequel isn't? (The good ones wait for a good script though!) It's even dumber with none of the spirit the original had.  And now another twenty years later, the screen has been over-saturated with alien invasion movies to the point of brain numbingly sickening nausea! Unlike the last time there's not only no need for this thing, but there should be outright extreme prejudice against it. It's an utterly worthless limp formulaic juvenile bore beyond belief.  Actually that's an insult to juveniles who surely will reject this with all they have to choose from these days.
And sorry to say, every adult member of the cast that showed up for the payday should not only be embarrassed but should make a public apology in order to save whatever integrity they have left!

The flight combat scenes didn't feel like you could follow anything that was happening, so there was no tension & relief or ducking my head feeling like I was in the experience.
I'd say "too bad Will Smith wasn't in it" but really, he would've just been stuck in a movie with no humor or emphasis on personality.

Over the top special effects like watching fireworks on 4th of July. Visually interesting in a bad CGI sort of way but with no plot behind it or no interesting characters, it incredibly actually becomes boring. Zero suspense, the script looks like it was writtn by a 6 year old. Formulmatic to the point of any rudimentary script writint software program could have written this formulmatic scrip with the press of a buton. did anyone watching it really think we weren't going to be victorious in spite of all odds against us. I am surprised there was not a mandate to the viewers at the end asking us to stand up and cheer while they rolled the credits with the audience giving high five's to one another. I, for one, was at the edge of my seat with white knuckles wondering if we were going to make it or not (sarcasm intended). And how can any serious actor allow himself to be in a movie where he has to read a line that actually says "now you are a true warrior". are they kidding me? And Jeff Daniels gets to say, "we didn't win last time because of luck, we won because of our resolve" OMG, make it stop, please!!!! I guess it is a good movie, if you are 5 yeasr old. The escapr from the alien space craft as the exit was closing was very cool in the first movie. Doing the exact same thing the second time, just was not the same thing. Really couldn't they find anyone out ther wjo could actually write a screenplay? Expand

They basically made a "safe" movie instead of adding anything new or interesting, and this is why I gave it 0. This is a remake of the first film, with far less originality. "Safe" remakes are a disease in the film industry that needs to be eradicated.

The over-reliance on science fiction tropes with no proper story to back it up really messed things up in my opinion. If they just looked at some of the short films that are available on You Tube and made a movie based on that they could have made something better.

I can't say that I will watch any prequel/sequel in the future. This goes on my list of abandoned franchises which includes Harry Potter, X-Men, Star Wars, Spider Man, and anything based on a "Young Adult Novel".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Saw the film yesterday at a double feature knowing nothing about the plot of the new film. Now that I'm sure it will be one of the Epic fails of Hollywood history, there may some nostalgic value to the ticket stub

like the summary says, ... " Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ ...

..except of course, for Jeff Goldblum, with a new love interest - (I guess there wasn't still some love there..) and this IMHO was the main flaw - they made up an imaginary earth where (because of the previous alien invasion) all countries live together in peace, and we have outposts on Jupiter and nearby planets , including bases on the moon, all amazingly accomplished in only 20 years! ( Alien invasions might be good for us?)

So this time its jets outfitted with alien weaponry, and US soldiers with laser weapons - it is clearly Star Wars envy! And therefore it goes from being a disaster movie to episode one of the new fantasy story where we learn how mankind goes from a peace loving species (organic life form) to an invading alien ass kicker who will boldly go where no man has gone before, to kill aliens with their own technology while they sleep - courtesy of the iBeachball from space and a long dead alien race.

Episode 2 Revenge .... Now we'll be the aliens taking over planets and consuming all their resources and polluting them at the same time - Watch out the humans are coming!

Such movies need to be so over the top, so ridiculous, so free of any political statements and so cleverly scripted that you forget that you're supposed to loathe stupidity and instead accept the nonsense as somehow natural.
Independence Day: Resurgence does some of this but nowhere near enough. It manages to get serious and sentimental at the most laughable of times while completely missing any opportunities to insert some much needed comic relief. It also repeats the cardinal mistake made in the first one by having the president of the present world empire and his nuclear weapons save humanity. If the Germans had won the war, Independence Day: Resurgence would have featured Hitler flying fighter planes against the evil aliens. But they didn't so the US president gets the job. Good movies need to find a way to save the world that does not include the Pentagon or corrupt politicians and other control freaks. There has never been a heroic US president. Never. So why do we have to have one in Independence Day? It's like having an honest lawyer or economist in a movie. No one would watch it because it's not realistic. Heroic US presidents are even less realistic, yet somehow we're supposed to accept it in movies. And obviously the heroic president loves him some world empire, just like Wall Street and the other fatcats who are screwing us over. What a coincidence that the imaginary heroic president wants to rule the world, exactly like his non-heroic real world counterparts! The propaganda just never ends here. Accept US world empire or you're with the aliens(terrorists/communists/insert next bogus scare here)!

So when you go balls to the wall with this low grade US militarism propaganda all chance of a light approach go out the window. You either love the empire and cheer for the humans or you hate it and are forced to cheer for the aliens. You know they're losing anyway, so no matter how big their boat is they are the eternal and doomed underdogs in Hollywood movies.
So, definitely a big thumbs up for all the people who take US war propaganda seriously and people who tear up when nuclear bombs, unbelievable stupidity and horn music save the world once again. A rather big thumbs down if you don't respond well or at all to these things. Other than the embarrassingly obvious propaganda in Independence Day: Resurgence, the only other reason to watch it might be the visuals. But how many different tidal waves can Hollywood make where the eastern seaboard of the United States gets destroyed before people lose interest? In another case of blatantly obvious and slimy imperialist propaganda, the tidal wave in this awful movie manages to stop just outside the west wall of the White House; or as I prefer to call it: the Pig House.
Oh and the acting is atrocious as well, and so is the writing. If you don't like Jeff Goldblum this will do nothing for you. Unfortunately I find him to be about as convincing an actor as Steven Segal, so for me he actually manages to drag something that belongs in a toilet already through all the sewage pipes and off to sea whenever he is in a movie.

Watch if you want to be a Good German, uh, I mean Good American. Take it outside, douse it with gasoline and set fire to it if you don't.

The acting is some of the worst i have ever witnessed. It was actually painful to sit through.

The original was an absolute classic but they decide to wait 20 years to make a sequel and the best they could do is Roland Emmerich? The reason Will Smith isn't in it is because he took one look at that script and told him and 20th Century Fox to take a hike!

Massive massive disappointment. Do not waste your time. I gave it 1/10 only because Jeff Goldblum is funny. Otherwise it would of been zero.

When the first film came out to home video i binge watched it as a child from the corny speech's and quirks to even the more casual "Merica' **** yeah" moments it was truly a memorable movie whether we remembered of by heart Bill Pullmans " Today we celebrate our Independence Day" speech or Randy Quaid's "up yours" to the alien race, we all have those moments from the original that give us chills even today. Independence Day 2: Resurgence however is the complete opposite so much so that even after watching the film in cinema with friends i have to now reconfirm my knowledge of the film because of how truly forgettable the entire film is.

In Independence Day 2 we launch 20 years into the future in a time where human technology has advanced to become on par with 1996's aliens technology and where Roland Emmerich has forgotten to write a good film. The film center's on Jake and about 12 other characters give or take as you struggle to find out who is supposed to be the main character and which plot arc's are actually relevant to the story. The main problem with the film is that it has no build up to what happens and doesn't earn it's shocks and plot twists from the audience as everyone is already aware from even the earliest trailers and the lack of any real tension and stakes that America is going to win once again.

In the end Independence day 2 is an absolute mess with little to no concept as to whether or not it wants to go complete comedy or complete drama, staring Hollywood's newest batch of A-holes in a sequel baiting train wreck. Please do not watch this movie, watch the original instead and save your hard earned dollars for the time being on something more worthy of your time.

This whole film feels pointless, it’s an over CGI’d re-make of Independence Day degassing itself as a sequel with little flair, little originality and is bland and dull. The effects aren’t that good, the acting isn’t that good, the characters are boring and apart from the end, it feels like a shot for shot re-make of Independence Day done by people who that have played too much of the Halo Games. Roland Emmerich is yet another director who has been proven over the years to have been a barely competent director who just happened to get lucky by coming out with Independence Day when he did because it was the right film for the right audience at the right time. This film I don’t think will match any of those. It’s a film 20 years in the making and it wasn’t worth it and please do not make the Independence Day 3 that you alluded to in the final scene, because that sounded even more ridiculous. What can I say it’s just a dumb, dull film. It has all the same problems that the first film had but it’s decided to stop having fun and character so there’s no investment for anyone. Expand

I have never seen independence day before so I went into this movie with no expectation whatsoever. This is easily the worst summer movie i have seen so far. I hate popcorn style action flicks like transformers so naturally if i knew that I probably wouldn't have gone to see this but i went with a friend who likes that kind of movie and has seen the first one and he enjoyed it. Jeff goldblum gave the best performance however everyone else felt like they were just there. The guy who plays the doctor felt like the jar jar binks of independence day he was so annoying and contributed some of the worse dialogue of the entire movie. There is a weird subplot with a bunch of kids who lost there mother that I really didn't get or feel for when they were in trouble because it was executed so poorly. So between terrible dialogue bad characters and poor direction makes this the worst summer movie to come out yet Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My problems with this movie began when I learned that they had built all these crazy space structures and bases on very distant planets like Saturn by learning to apply the alien technology they had accumulated in a mere 20 years. From then on it lost more and more credibility. Events in this movie were all just too coincidental. Main characters encounter eachother just in the right time at the right moment and these moments follow up pretty quickly. It also features some dumb jokes, overdone CGI world destruction which would have destroyed the planet by long if it really happened that way, racial stereotypes (cheering buddhists and arab nomads when the world is saved), everybody just seems to want to sacrifice their lives for the great cause and noone blinks an eye, cheesy motivational speeches and a star wars like vibe when they dogfight the alien aircrafts. Also they recycled the destroy the beehive queen and they'll just walk away plot which was so predictable. And they just had to scream like they were rambo eveytime they did a difficult maneuver in an aircraft. The movie would've been a lot better if you had an open ending in where the Earth would suffer a great loss and they would recuperate in the next movie. That would also give you the artistic space to prevent all these movie cliches. I hope the sequel will be better, because this was a dissappointment. Expand

Err, I mean, main villain that's a many legged queen alien that just happens to resemble a spider because the imagination can be a desolate place sometimes.

Emmerich doesn't get the master of disaster respect he kind of deserves, and this is why (also some of his other movies, whatever, I do have a point).

People are saying Will Smith dodged a bullet by starring in Suicide Squad (and sure, Collateral Beauty too) instead of this. That's like saying he dodged a bullet by maiming himself. It's a better outcome but no less painful and also what was the point of it all?

Here Emmerich has correctly grasped bib. Why?
Although he is a very visually beautiful film but the content is plump, can be provided, frumpy and has no wow moments as the first part.
The cast is sparse and only the well-known actor (Bill Pulmann etc.) make the story bearable.
This one has retired after 20 years again to a sequel has been a big mistake.

It's depressing to see so much money and effort put into great CG only to have it ruined by atrocious editing and an awful script. It isn't even campy or fun, it's just awful. There are twice as many characters as there should be, and there's a ridiculous obsession with rehashing old gags for nostalgia. There's no focus whatsoever. Seriously the "cheap rip-off" version of this... Absolute total garbage, what a waste of time. Another wasted opportunity to make a decent sequel, not that the first movie was Oscar material but it was fun and new, this was just abuse to my eyes.

Avoid like the plague.

In short: a waste of time and money.

The movie moves at 1,000 mph and makes absolutely no sense along the way. I literally had no idea what was happening through all the CGI and screams then the movie ended. It was the best part of the movie. Utter utter modern tosh.

The special effects were top end. I gave it 4 stars at least (The DVD, sadly, left out some important parts, and did not have the theatrical version it advertised).

The sequel failed on all points. The actors from the original were truly pathetic. Jeff Goldblum had none of his humor, charm and great acting ability. Bill Pullman had none of the quality of his original performance; I was embarrassed for him. Judd Hirsh was okay, but had only a bit part. The new actors for this sequel were little more than a clique, with little interest generated.

Note, the software here did not allow me to post my number score, I tried to put down a one.

The special efforts, even in 3D, were blurred and boring, with zero quality. The darkness of the screen in most scenes ruined what little effort they did make and the 3D was wasted, it added nothing.

The original storyline was trashed, with no explanations to explain how the things we saw were occurring (I don't want to give out spoilers here). I'm shocked the same Directors were involved in this disaster of a film.

I give it one star, and that's being generous. Don't waste your money and time on it.

I confess that I was surprised that it was only twenty years later that "Independence Day" would have its sequel. It was one of those films that I considered already a museum piece, with a large group of admirers, but less and less frequentI confess that I was surprised that it was only twenty years later that "Independence Day" would have its sequel. It was one of those films that I considered already a museum piece, with a large group of admirers, but less and less frequent on cinema TV channels. But if there's one thing I've ever taken for granted, it's Roland Emmerich's delight when he gets the chance to destroy half the planet, an addiction that drives him to exploit any excuse to do so.

The action takes place twenty years after the first film: Humanity came into contact with alien technologies that allowed a singular technological leap and the existence of a common enemy and an unparalleled destruction allowed the countries of the world to join forces as never before. Everything wonderful... but behold, the ugly evil aliens from the first movie are back, with a bigger spaceship, with more resources and committed to massacring Humanity and consuming global resources, like a plague of locusts. Once again, the US (who else?) has the arduous task of leading the world in a supreme effort to exterminate this threat... and this time, help will come from where least expected.

The film starts off well, with very good premises, but after fifteen minutes it completely collapses and becomes a thing so lazy and uninteresting that it almost makes you want to turn off the TV. Emmerich seems so excited by the idea of annihilating the human race (he's done it several times) that he's not able to explore and develop well the initial premises of a united, peaceful, technologically advanced and suspicious world. We don't have the time or opportunity to see the way humanity has recovered from the initial attacks, and the way the US puts itself at the head of the world is arrogant and pretentious. The subplot of an intergalactic resistance, released in the middle of the film, was poorly used and is almost suspended, functioning basically as a hook for a third film, to be released.

In a film so lacking in a story to tell, the action consists of incessant combats against space invaders, in a sci-fi action style without emotion, without heart, without any hint of humanity or suspense to make us adhere to what we are seeing. The actors' work comes down to basics: Liam Hemsworth is a cowboy, Maika Monroe is a pretty face, Sela Ward is dull, Jessie Usher is pretentious. Back to the characters from the first film, battered by age and arthritis, Bill Pullman, Brent Spinner and Jeff Goldblum have meticulously ruined their characters with scenes we won't want to see, like an ill Pullman eager to pilot a futuristic fighter jet, or Spinner in a gay-friendly reincarnation, walking through his laboratory with his naked butt, closely followed by his... husband?

In the midst of this disaster, not even the effects are worth saving: grand, expensive, extravagant, the film is artificial and doesn't hide it for a second. It works a lot like an expensive video game: it's beautiful, it's elegant, it's flashy, it's fake like a thousand-euro bill, it has a lot of explosions and a dose of destruction that would drive insurance companies insane, but also the older clichés of the genre. The cinematography is good and there are many magnificent and very beautiful images, always computer made, off course.

I was honestly surprised to hear the movie get a sequel 20 years later but the trailers never really pulled me in and all the bad reviews deterred me from giving it a watch myself. Plus Will Smith was not returning due to scheduling conflict with Suicide Squad and they decided to have his character killed off-screen which is annoying. Still, Roland Emmerich who directed the first one was returning for the sequel so it had potential to be good. Anyway since it is independence day I've decided to give the movie a chance and see for myself if the movie was as bad as people say it was.

Firstly, I want to praise the concept and idea of this movie. The humans using alien technology and preparing for the next alien invasion is an interesting idea. Shame they don't do much with it but oh well. The destruction in the first act of the movie is cool though and the CGI, in general, is visually impressive.

Secondly, I've got to praise the returning actors' Jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner and Bill Pullman who return as their respective characters from the first movie. Both Jeff, Brent and Bill still give great, charismatic performances despite the really poor script. Experience and veteran actors like Sela Ward as the new president and William Fichtner as space commander are also really good in the film. Liam Hemsworth as "Jake Morrison" is one of the few genuinely good new and young actors and is also able to give a somewhat good performance with the bad script.

That is all the praise I can give this movie because it is bad and not a good sequel. On the topic of new actors, Jessie Usher as "Dylan Hiller" stepson of "Steven Hiller", Will Smith's character from the first movie, is terrible. Jessie has no charm or any of the emotional range of Steven Hiller. He never gives any quips like Steven and the moments that are meant to be emotional are not there because Jessie fails to deliver a good performance. It may not necessarily be his fault as the script is atrocious but his character doesn't live up to his father. There is also this Chinese actress Angela Yeung Wing as "Rain Lao" who is quite bad as well as she gives a boring performance but then again her character is just written to be a good looking person in the battle. Another reason why this script is really poor. The other new actors do a somewhat decent job but none of them really stand out. I've already mentioned a dozen times but the script is just dumb. A fair amount of lines spouted out by the actors just feel like it was written by a 10-year-old and are not even amusing or funny. A lot of dialogue feel utterly meaningless and add nothing to the movie. One of the charms about the original movie was the quips of Will Smith which even though it was cheesy, it was able to give me a small chuckle. In this movie, it feels like they are trying really hard to get us to laugh with over the top cartooney performance and dumb written dialogue. Unfortunately, it doesn't work and it makes this movie almost a pain to get through. The story in the first movie was dumb and despite the interesting idea in this movie, it is still pretty dumb. Just like the first movie, you are going to have to shut your logic brain because a lot of moments in this movie require you to just believe that can happen. However, the third act in this movie is even more unconvincing and more stupid than the first movie and makes me genuinely believe the aliens are stupid. It also retreads a lot of similar ground to the first movie with destruction first act then attempted but failed mission second act and unconvincing plan but successful third act. It's just the same plot and concept of the first movie but given a new coat of paint and that is lazy. Additionally, the action scenes in this movie are just not as entertaining as the first one. There is a dogfight similar to the first movie but in this case, it is just a cluster of grey CGI spaceships shooting laser beams all over the place with no idea who the good guys and bad guys are. It's just boring and uninspiring. The final fight is also just not that epic and had a lot of incredibly stupid moments.

This is a very unsatisfying sequel and is inferior to the first movie in everywhere. Independence day 1996 was dumb but unique and was a really fun experience. However, Independence Day Resurgence is just dumb in general. The movie also has the nerve and audacity to tease a sequel at the end and honestly with its poor box office performance, I am glad that it will never happen. The first movie made an alien invasion exciting, Resurgence makes it forgettable and boring.
