How Do You Know is a subpar comedy with an absolutely atrocious script. There were so many scenes in this movie that made me question aloud "how can any find that funny? That's sad and horrifying!" The jokes are just god awful. The directionHow Do You Know is a subpar comedy with an absolutely atrocious script. There were so many scenes in this movie that made me question aloud "how can any find that funny? That's sad and horrifying!" The jokes are just god awful. The direction is actually pretty okay, and Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Jack Nicholson, and Owen Wilson easily save the movie from being a 3 or lower. Overall though, you can give this one a pass. Comedy really is his forte due to his ability to introduce a tiny nuance into a scene, which just makes the scene so believable and alive, Great watch even if you only watched it for him ... but rest of it is good too. Wilson's character is annoying after a while 0 but that just could be the acting rather than character! Expand

It's slightly, only slightly, better than your average rom-com- and that's because its genuine, which is nice, despite the bore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here's the thing: this movie contains hands down the best proposal of all time and it isn't between the lead characters. There are 2 or 3 moments that are simply sublime, including a son managing a relationship with a narcissistic father with a brilliant negotiating flourish. I found the performances clean and convincing: Owen Wilson, Jack Nicholson, Reese Witherspoon and the forever menschy Paul Rudd act in ways that carry more authenticity and thoughtfulness than I'm used to witnessing in a rom com. Did I mention Katherine Hahn? And the amazing monologue of her boyfriend? If I were an acting student I'd transcribe that speech. While a lot of the movie simply isn't that great, certain aspects possess a striking honesty that makes the characters seem more original. I have never seen a breakup where the person initiating was so generous, grounded and not at all neurotic. Includes moments of exquisite humanity. Expand

It's a very average romantic comedy. The acting was decent, the plot was predictable and cliché and the movie was mildly entertaining. Good leads wrapped in a comedy that barely gets a good few funny moments but in the background and almost all its execution is just another foolish romanitc comedy of the bunch, with nothing fresh or brand new to propose.
