It's not bad mind you, but it did have a lot of room for improvement. On what you ask? Everything. The characters, graphics, story, music, voice acting, and I'll even say the jokes could have been a bit wittier. It's enjoyable for the first time watching, but it's one of those kinds of movies where you're only satisfied watching it once. Expand

If anything, Home is a nice idea with some genuinely heartfelt moments here and there. Some fun and colourful visuals too. However, the movie on the whole is just hastily put together and bizarrely paced.

The dialogue is insanely childish and can someone tell Rhianna she can't act. Jim Parson, further demonstrates how little range he has. Sheldon is great in BBT, but not in everything else. But to be honest his casting was a good fit for the character.

But the last act of the movie does salvage the wreck the first hour left behind with some great scenes that show what the movie should have been.

Overall:
Home isn't bad, but feels like it should have gone through some more post production. It is clear it had potential just a shame that most of the movie is trailer bait aimed at 5 year olds.

Side Note:
If a sequel ever gets made, be sure to remember that adults are a demographic too.

So when I heard they were releasing only 1 movie this year I was kinda sad. The characters are Oh and Tip. Jim Parsons is a good actor and all but he's pretty much playing Sheldon but an alien. Tip is ok too but the movie focuses on the Boov so much that she doesn't get to develop a personality that much. I think Rihanna should just stick to music making. But the biggest problem with this movie is the story. It feels like 5 plots were mixed in a blender and the filmmaker s just went with that. The jokes basically consist of toilet humor, my least favorite. The animation is ok I guess. Dreamworks, if u want to get back on you feet this film isn't helping u. 6/10 Expand

It can get really annoying at times and some scenes just don't cut out. Plus I feel as it just doesn't have that much emotion outside of the two main characters. Overall, not DreamWorks best work, but not its worse. Expand

Generic HollyWood fluff basically what this movie is.

The story to Home is about a group of friendly aliens uses Earth for their new hideout. But when one is inadvertently discovered by a human, he has no choice but to join forces with the teen and the two embark on a globe-spanning adventure to right his wrongs - and maybe find out the two races have a lot more in common then they thought.

I remember back in February 2014 when I went to see Peabody and Sherman at the theater and when all the trailers to loads of different movies where over, then a short animated movie came on called Almost Home and it was only a couple of minutes long and it was a fine little short film...way better than the movie itself, I mean I'm being nasty but hey that's me being honest for you right here and it's not like I wanted this movie to be a generic kids movie.

Jim Parsons does the voice work in this movie for are main character. Now I like Jim Parsons as an actor and him being in the Golden Globe wining TV show The Big Bang Theory, but in this he just plays Jim Parsons with a little salt of Sheldon Cooper. He didn't do horrible or anything like that he just didn't hind his voice while playing the character because although out the movie I had an image of Sheldon Cooper in my head every time the character speaks.

Rihanna as we know isn't the greatest actress on the planet, actually she's horrible but now in this she voices a character that even when shes not in front of the camera she still can't pull of a good voice performance, because I didn't buy for one second that she played a young girl in this movie.

The jokes in the movie felt really flat to me and I know this movie is for kids but I'm not sure if the kids will enjoy it, maybe they will or maybe they not at least the movie pretty animation to keep them focus and not get bored.

Without spoiling anything in the movie I just got to say that the movie ended in such a cliche way that always happen in kids movies towards the end and that's character's dancing over their success and their victory. Every time that happens in kids movies I simply roll my eyes.

For the only good things in the movie are the animation as it looks pretty and colorful to look at and the voice acting for the most part isn't as bad as I said early. Overall Home is an generic, cliche, playing it safe and easily forgettable.

The movie had a rushed storyline where parts of the movie were not explained enough in full during the first half of the movie to understand how the concepts of the movie worked. Also, the fact that 80% of the film's soundtrack consisted of Rihanna songs both kills the belief that the sound crew had a taste for creativity during the film, and also makes me believe that the producers cut a deal with Rihanna to put several songs performed by her in the film to save money on production costs. (In other words, a "2-for-1" special.) And, to add more mention of "Rihanna advertising" to the film, the character she voices just happens to be from the same country as her; since no characters in the film have singing parts, this film, at a certain point, started to feel like an advertisement for a Rihanna album. The movie started with short history of the Boov's adventures to find a home, which basically is the short film released a few years ago, but the film itself is different from what the marketing made it out to be.

From the trailers and the short film, I thought that Oh (Jim Parsons) was running from his fellow Boov - which he is - after making one too many mistakes and landed on Earth while he was running away from them, causing all the Boov to come to Earth because they were looking for him but that’s not the case. The movie went in a complete different route, either the studio changed the story-line at the last minute or I saw another movie because the trailers was for an alternate movie not the one I saw.

So the movie was confusing for a little while but it doesn’t change the fact that the Oh and Tip grow on you, the little Boov Oh, like his counterparts, is quirky, a bit silly, and sometimes funny. The Boovs may not be as funny but they are as endearing as the Minions. Home is solely destined for kids though, the jokes and gags are aimed to please them, and after a few minutes you know exactly where the story is going. The message “accepting people for who they are” may not be original but for a kids’ movie it’s never a bad idea to remind them that being different is OK.

Home is fun to watch and could be a nice afternoon trip to the movie theaters with your young kids, nieces and nephews. @wornoutspines

Unfortunately, that is lost amidst the gags, Rihanna songs cutting out any dramatic moments, and typical hip humor that Dreamworks is known for. Had the film focused more on the girl’s conflict being separated from her mother and the heartfelt message this could’ve been a great film. Instead it’s another passable but forgettable Dreamworks film. Children will enjoy it and parents might smile but nothing worth remembering. Expand

Its cute and adorable but the story feels incomplete with the majority of the film seeming to be random, unrelated, filler. Its not bad, but its far from good. I would say wait for Netflix as its just not worth the price of admission.

This was cute. Story and characters are fine, except the alien leader who was unlikable. It's very refreshing to see a black main character.

If you're looking for a fun animation with unique story. This is the one to watch. Was fun at momments, but i guess too childish. They tried to make a original story, but eventually - with so many flaws.

Home isn't bad but I expect better from the studio that gave us the likes of Shrek and How to Train Your Dragon. When the dialogue's sentence construction is the most interesting thing about the film, you gotta rethink your concept.
Verdict: For when you've already watched everything better.

The standards for animated films have been set so high in recent years, films like; 'Toy Story 3' (2010), 'How to Train Your Dragon' (2010), 'Tangled' (2010), 'Wreck-It Ralph' (2012), 'Frozen' (2013), 'The Lego Movie' (2014), 'How to TrainThe standards for animated films have been set so high in recent years, films like; 'Toy Story 3' (2010), 'How to Train Your Dragon' (2010), 'Tangled' (2010), 'Wreck-It Ralph' (2012), 'Frozen' (2013), 'The Lego Movie' (2014), 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' (2014) and 'Big Hero 6' (2014) all come to mind, 'Home' is pitiful in comparison.

The film is made by DreamWorks Animation Studios, a studio I would not rank as high as Walt Disney Animation Studios or Pixar Animation Studios, despite "Shrek", "Madagascar" and "How to Train Your Dragon". This is a studio that for every great film they release, they'll always release something sub-par like 'The Croods' (2013), or 'Shark Tale' (2004) etc.

Jim Parsons, best known as Sheldon from the TV sitcom 'The Big Bang Theory' voices a little alien named Oh. I am not a huge fan of 'The Big Bang Theory', so obviously the casting of Jim Parsons wouldn't intrigue me to watch this film. Rihanna voices Tip and other members of the cast include Steve Martin and Jennifer Lopez (not a huge fan of her music, or her films).

'Home' plays exactly like "E.T." and while I think children will definitely like it, adults will probably be irritated at the lack originality and the fact that it's just another movie they have to watch because their kids will find it amusing.

The comedy is also very off, if you've seen the trailer, you'll know that the highlight was Oh's arms shaking uncontrollably and yelling "My hands are in the air like I just do not care!". Even for children's films, this is a lame joke. The 'Big Hero 6' (2014) trailer had Baymax deflating and sticks tape over it, and the noise of him deflating was one the funniest things ever, but this is just lame.

Nice animation, but I could not sympathize with the characters enough to care and predictable jokes prevent this from being a groundbreaking animated film from DreamWorks. I don't think this will even score an Oscar nomination if 'The Lego Movie' (2014) failed to do so.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I can appreciate what they were trying to do with this film which was to create a silly sci-fi film for children. I don't believe it was aimed at adults. But if my children had the sense to write reviews then I would gladly hand the keyboard over but here's my take being the adult that I am

The plot was pretty straight-forward, Imminent doom check. Goofy aliens, check. Missing person of interest, check. Nothing you haven't seen before with obvious life message? Check and check.

I don't take issue with the plot so much as I do with the voice actors. There are some musicians that can transition from music to film and Rihanna, to me, has failed to sell me as a voice actress. Very monotone and off-beat not in a good sense. Steve Martin and Jim Parsons did fine though certainly not their best work. Again these two gents perform better on screen not just using their voices.

The music, if you like Rihanna well you won't be disappointed. If you dislike Rihanna well you may want to avoid this movie or go and see it with someone who has viewed it before you and can signal when to uncover your ears.

Not a horrible film but definitely one for the kids and as an adult I felt I had to endure if I was to enjoy an hour of peace.

The idea behind this was great from DreamWorks Animation. The storytelling though and our respective characters didn't make the movie worth giving a good score in. It's still decent though.
