My biggest takeaway from this experience was an unintended one.

The critics have no idea what people like. This movie is perfectly fine. I get it that maybe it’s schlocky and maybe it’s Oscar-baity but... a lot of people like movies like that. My grandma and mom will love this movie.

It’s not my favorite movie of the year, but the hate this movie has garnered is laughable. It’s actually a heartfelt and beautiful film about growth and family. Watch for yourself and make your own judgement!

This book is my required reading for American History in my college course. Everyone should read this and watch the movie. It's been portrayed wonderfully by Ron Howard and the cast. This story is also about my Sister Marines family. She and her family are extremely proud to share their history, so everyone should be respectful and keep politics out of it. This story is not political one bit. Expand

Well acted, well directed, as usual by Ron Howard, with a compelling and interesting story to tell. This isn't the best movie I've ever seen, given a few more banal moments, but it is still well worth watching, and provides many endearing features. The only reason I can think that this movie got panned by critics is the fact that the author doesn't meet the critic's requirements that his political view of the world conform to theirs. Is this just another example of how the media landscape is horrifically dominated by just one point of view that no other point of view should be allowed to survive, let alone thrive? Is this the country we now live in?? Expand

They really enjoyed the movie, as did I. It's a heartwarming tale of trying to overcome adversity and better yourself. The performances by the main cast were fantastic, I particularly enjoyed Glenn Close as J.D.'s grandmother. I really don't know what the critics have against this movie, seeing how hard most of them slammed it (with the exception of Richard Roeper, one of the oldest and most respected film critics in the business), only further cements my belief that movie critics are an extremely poor representation of what general audiences like. This is exactly why I watch the movies that I want to watch instead of letting film critics influence what I watch. Expand

Mamaw insists on taking a family shot of that fine moment, which then traces back across generations in that same house - it's a simple montage, reminiscent of Spike Lee's authorship, that says more volumes than the dialogue is so obsessively trying to convey. It says, without necessarily pronouncing it, one of the already most quoted phrases "Family is only thing worth goddamn" without uttering a single word. It also announces something tragic is about to happen, and something that is much more hereditary than just following the American Dream or die trying.

I wasn't a big fan of Vanessa Taylor's The Shape of Water, because it put way too much emphasis on archetypes, and once again, it shows here. That said, this is likely to be most quotable film this side of COVID19's pandemic. Contradictory much? You'd think, coming from a social media frenzy.

In fact, Opie's camp opus is in fact all the things at once, dialed up to 11. He manages to be snarky about the irritating neoliberal job interviewers J.D. so fairly calls out for, but he depicts white trash misery like a liberal.

I'd say, despite all the archetypes, everyone is depicted in this film as a Neutral Terminator, except for three people: Lindsay, J.D. and his then girlfriend (now wife) - precisely the last generation of this family. He gets into serious flashback and wig play, and yes, this is as baity (90s bait at that) as advertised. And yet, everything here is grand - cinematography by the great Maryse Alberti captures brilliantly the clash between two mindsets, two eras, while the "rustic" countryesque score by Hans Zimmer in partnership with David Fleming is just as exquisite.

Howard's obsession to film piss (first from a dog, and then from J.D. himself) is funny, because as we know, urine is sterile, and so is usually an Opie joint. Yes, politics were conveniently removed from here, apart from Al Gore and Lewinsky mentions by J.D.'s younger self - even those references try to put this Good Terminator in a Democrat path. But to deny that Howard hasn't always been like this, now that's **** up.

Oh, the actresses. Say what you will, but you've never seen Amy Adams and Glenn Close like this. Close's Mamaw in particular injects a humanity with her tradictional eye acting, and close up moves, that is way beyond the pages. The film (and the book?) looks up to both of them as no necessary losers by themselves, but as women who either gave up of the rigged system because of bad parenthood (Bev) or... well... decided to amend the wrongs they did in the previous generation (Mamaw, obv). And then there's Haley Bennett's more...subtle deglam, as a field spectator of the mess/one of the viewer's eyes.

So, yes this is Mommie (and Mamaw) Dearest by Ron Howard, which means he finally let it all out, but not without sanitizing all the area before filming.

Two quick final notes:
1) Bev rollerskating in Intensive Care to the sound of Banamarama's Cruel Summer is such a 2020 mood.
2) Where were all these "justice" critics in 2001, when A Beautiful Mind took home the Oscar for Best Picture?

This story speaks to those who have struggles, and i mean real struggles. Family Poverty, drug abuse, mental illness, elderly struggles, etc. Perhaps those who have never experienced such things would be confused by it; but this is not only an excellent commentary on these issues, it is also a beautiful tale of a mans struggle to do right by his family. The acting is superb from moment to moment, drawing you into the story. Not a single member of the cast botched even a second.

The story, obviously gripping and touching. It doesnt play on cheap tropes, rather delivering with elegance.

The plight of the rural poor is not something that often garners attention because its not something one can get noticed for caring about. It is a well-written and acted film. For a college graduate from similar circumstances it presents a fairly accurate depiction of its subject. It was a good watch that held my attention for the whole movie. The only thing that made it hard to watch were the sore spots it hit. I surmise the reason its positive aspects fell to be noticed by critics was due to their desire to look towards films that fit into a more privileged worldview that can overlook the suffering of certain groups. I felt a connection to each character, for different reasons. After being in law enforcement for 20 years, and experiencing these family struggles first hand, I felt it was very accurate. The guilt and pain that children face with parents that are addicts. The mood swings, the anger, and the manipulation that the addict uses to continue their drug use. The overwhelming desire everyone has to protect their family. The abuse that can carry on for generations. Many of these issues are vicious cycles that continue in family trees for generations to come; chemical dependency, teen pregnancy, poverty. It does a good job making the viewer experience the pain that each character is going through, and exposes the sad truth of how unfair life can be. We definitely don’t all have equal opportunities to succeed. And many times the children in these situations don’t have anyone to “save” them. They are left to fail, and continue the family cycle. It was all very raw and real. Highly recommend. Expand

Her Bev is on par with Meryl Streep's Sophie in Sophie's Choice. Glenn Close' portrayal of Mamaw caught me by surprise & she's truly an amazing actor: she plays the riveting, fiercely loyal, tough, flawed, & undeterred matriarch to save her family from very hard life obstacles & from poor life choices, just so her children may have a chance 'to get out' & in JD's case, 'be somebody'. The fact that this film is based on JD Vance' biography (& not some conjured screenwriter's fiction of the overcoming hero) strengthens me all the more, & Mamaw's courage, total sacrifice, & hard-earned wisdom deeply touches. Do not be dissuaded by the professional critics' low ratings: they are paid to push an agenda. The 70's & 80's vibe in style, cars, locations, characterizations, & even the smallest items are so authentic: mise en scene is superb. Ron Howard hit another home-run! Expand

Critics, of course, despised this as it runs contrary to their woke narrative. Sadly, their fanatical drive to promote their agenda has blinkered their ability to see a movie that should be evaluated outside of identity politics or the looming culture wars that it is embedded in. But, unfortunately everything is politically fair game these days and the fanatics can only see nails whilst wielding their monomaniachal woke hammer. It's a shame. Is this film the best movie ever made? Nope. It's not even in the conversation. But, the story is digestible, promotes individual human trying, family, community, self-belief and most of all, the power of good choices to overcome your situation. So, you can see why woke critics couldn't let this slide. The woke agenda sees the world as competing identity groups that think in groups, all vying for power. At the top of this hierarchy of power is the evil whites who are privileged and therefore unsympathetic. This film isn't trying to say anything about socioeconomics or ethnicity. It's simply portraying the reality of poor white families in America struggling under crippling unemployment, drug epidemics, loss of industry and the breakdown of the American family. That's all very real whether critics like it or not. But, you can see how it flies in their face if all they've been printing and writing about for the last 5 years is how racist and privileged white people are, and how the nuclear family is a patriarchal, outdated and oppressive model for human development. Well, one of the themes in this film is how when traditional family structure breaks down, through tragedy, drug abuse or anything else, you have to be extremely hard working and steadfast to get out from under. It took one of JD Vance's relative's (his grandmother) to actually support him and encourage him for him to claw himself out of poverty. We are left to imagine what a whole family that supports each other could accomplish. But, again that's 'white supremacy/capitalism/patriarchy' in full stride or something. Others think it's just common sense. Are the people portrayed in this movie likely Trump supporters? I'd say yes. Does it humanize them and breath empathy into the characature of rednecks the media has depicted? Yes. Are they all white supremacists? No. And, that's what makes critics uncomfortable. They want you and me to believe their nonsense, low-resolution version of reality. Lastly, the performances are to be commended. Even when the drama feels a little unbelievable or trite the actors elevate the material through raw emotion and believability. Like I said, this is no masterpiece. But, Amy Adam's and Glenn Close particularly are such arresting actors they hold you to your seat throughout. So, I'm glad this movie was made. If it's not a giant triumph of cinema exactly it is a victory for relatable human stories being made by Hollywood again. Remember: it's okay to be white and it's okay to be Conservative. It doesnt make you evil or even superior in any innate way. This film isn't even about those two things. It just doesn't apologise for them. Which is tantamount to sin these days. *sigh*

Very lastly, I have no idea if any of JD Vance's story is true or if it's embellished and rounded off at the edges. I have no idea why the film doesnt explore his grandmothers steak in his own mothers failures. I think that was a heavily absent piece of the cause and effect puzzle to be quite honest. And, I've no idea what life is like in the Appalachian mountains. But, I do know his life circumstances. His situation echoes mine in multiple ways. And, I know that when you situation is totally **** and you have almost no one in your corner, society, the government, the culture or even a family member, all you have is your damn self. That's a tough rap. That part of the story is very real and deserves to be told.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The movie is clearly not that bad as reviewers claim it is. For an 'oscar movie' things that thrown me off was the shaky cam which is like a 'nono' 'no bueno' 'nein nein nein!' For a movie with such ambitions in my humble opinion. However it's strength is the story behind it about how from such a bad environment all of the members were able to come out of addictions and all that. If not the ending true story credits scene i would rate it lower, maybe a 6 or 5.5. The story itself deserves like 9, the movie is somewhere in between then Expand

The movie immediately devolves into "woe is me. my mama was an alcy and a drug addict, but what else you gonna do? We're Hillbillies!" [cue banjo music].

It really is melodramatic and the scene where he gets all offended by "redneck" makes me want to punch that dick in the culture.

Horrible melodrama where poor J.D. The child deals with a violent mother and later addicted, whose misfortune haunts him even in his adult life, and a calmer grandmother but with a turbulent past that is also in conflict with her daughter.
Hillbilly ... is a grotesque succession of emotional yelling, punching and blackmail, over-acting and bordering on caricature. More than elegy, an excess of white trash and rural miserabilism of "deep America" and a praise of meritocracy. Absent (and violent) parents and grandparents, witch mother and ex-witch but savior grandmother.
Sadly, some (few) will see this superficial monstrosity with Oscar pretensions as "a deep drama like life itself" with "intense and risky performances".
A pity that actresses of the stature of Glenn Close and Amy Adams have lent themselves to get into the skin of these grotesque but "Oscar-winning" characters.

Amy Adams and Glen Close star in director Ron Howard's adaptation of J.D. Vance's 2016 memoir. Netflix released to the theatre's for a couple of weeks before moving to their platform this week. Glad I waited.

"Hillbilly Elegy" explores J.D. Vance's relationship with his troubled mother (Adams) and her ongoing addiction to heroin and the care of his supportive grandmother (Close). Close is very good in this film (and could be remembered during awards season), but Adams felt "off" in her role. I just didn't feel any empathy for her downward (and overacted) spiral. J.D. (Gabriel Basso) also flatlined here. In a film that's supposed to challenge us on provocative social issues such as welfare, social rot, and the "hillbilly culture", Howard (who I normally love) was probably the wrong director to explore this world. Messages are largely lost and the film is simply a series of vignette's whereby J.D. (now finishing Yale Law School) remembers his troubled childhood. Netflix has a miss here.

But I think this story deserved a better film. The book is an excellent memoir of life amidst poverty, drug abuse, and self-destructive behavior. I find the book and film's moralizing pretty repugnant, since both glorify plenty of violence in service of "protecting the family name," but it is interesting to read that perspective.

Unfortunately, while the book is chronological, the film skips back and forth without any real cohesive structure. Instead of sequential chapters in JD's life, the film just skips around to different terrible moments in his life: his grandfather's death, his mom's suicide attempt, overdose, his mom yelling at him for no reason, etc. Instead of telling JD's story (he seems to have been fully grown up at the age of 12), the film just revels in his mother's most awful moments. Instead of jump-cutting around, I would have preferred to see why she behaved so terribly, what led her to pain and drugs and overdosing.

It's not bad, but it's not very good.

Although theaters are generally still closed, Netflix’s prestige picks are coming out weekly, even though the “awards season” has been extended into April. Last week, Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy premiered with mixed advance buzz and the Oscar hopes of a duo of “overdue,” multi-nominated actresses, Amy Adams and Glenn Close, in tow. Award worthiness is subjective – here’s how I see it.

Based on the memoir by J.D. Vance, Hillbilly Elegy tells the story of J.D., a Yale law student, who is in the middle of interviews for summer associate positions, when he receives word that his mother has overdosed on heroin. J.D. has to go home to his family in Ohio in order to take care of his mother. Through flashbacks on his journey home, we see how J.D. got from his meager beginnings, enduring abuse and his mother’s drug addiction to Yale with the fierce, no nonsense support of his grandmother. The perspective of people in Appalachia is not a typical one depicted in films, but family drama can be universal as many people in urban, suburban and rural areas endure hardships, lack of opportunity, addiction and abuse. There is also love, sacrifice and support that fill families across the board. While this story is specific to a people in a specific place and time in America, it feels pretty generic – disappointingly so.

Ron Howard does not do anything particularly interesting in directing this film. The only exceptions are the two sequences where we see how this Appalachian area has changed and decayed over the decades. Otherwise, Howard lets the emotions of the story drive the action. And, the emotions are very high.

Amy Adams plays J.D.’s mother, Bev. She’s mired in drug addiction. She’s abusive. She’s impulsive with men and clearly has trauma and mental health issues. Adams chews all of the scenery. She plays every angle to the hilt, which becomes a bit much to take.

The other pillar in J.D.’s life is Mamaw as played by Glenn Close. Close has the wig and make-up to transform her into the chain-smoking, Terminator loving matriarch. Close moves and speaks in a way that helps her embody the character and attempt to make the “hillwoman” more than a caricature. Close is more successful in her portrayal than Adams as she strikes the right tones and gets the inspiring, emotional touches needed to ground the movie. Unfortunately for both Adams and Close, their scene partners who play the teenage and adult J.D. are flat and uninspired, which drags down each of their scenes.

In fact, the J.D. character just solidifies how blandly generic Hillbilly Elegy feels. J.D. should not be the main character of the film since he is the least interesting aspect of the story. I can’t tell if it is the poor writing of the character or the lackluster performances by Gabriel Basso and Owen Asztalos, as adult and young J.D., respectively, that make him so blah. It’s probably failures on both ends – on top of the fact that his arc is in no way compelling.

While there is merit to this story, the focus of Hillbilly Elegy is misplaced. Glenn Close makes her scenes emotional and engaging, but the rest of the movie is either over-the-top or bland. It is a worthy experience, but other than Close, I wouldn’t say award-worthy. Grab a handful of kettle corn and judge for yourself.

This story of a family with Appalachian roots with a history of crises has been unfairly called boring (far from it) and cliched (something that's hard to imagine, given that it's based on a fact-based memoir), attributes that, because of issues with its writing and editing, are only partially deserved at best. To be sure, the "hillbilly" aspect of the story could have been better developed, the intercutting of the flashback and contemporary sequences could have been handled better, and the dialogue could have used retooling in some scenes. However, there are heartfelt sentiments aplenty here, not to mention the outstanding performances of Amy Adams and, especially, Glenn Close, award contenders in a number of competitions. Don't buy into the bashing that's been happening with this release; it's patently undeserved. Expand

Man, Amy Adams and Glenn Close really want that Oscar that they will star in something like 'Hillbilly Elegy'.

A shallow, predicable, and the most obvious "Oscar bait" movie ever made. However, it's not the worst thing ever despite what some people have said. Nothing captures the human struggle of lower-class people than rich celebrities, who think they have a gasp on reality, but after filming has finished, they go back to their rich lives until the next million-dollar role comes to them. If you're going to make a movie around this type of topic, you better get it right.

Last night when my wife and I were trying to decide what to watch, we decided to look for something that did more than entertain us. If we're going to sit still and do nothing for 2 hours, we want to be inspired when it's done. When I saw that Ron Howard directed it, I decided to give it a chance. It was uncomfortable at times, but also engrossing and likable. Near the end we were rewarded by a very cool, clear picture of what it looks like to climb out of a life that's going nowhere and redirect it. It was also an interesting glimpse of family looking out for each other. Glenn Glose's character was terrific. The adult lead male actor was very natural and likeable. Amy Adams brought great realism to a troubled character. Very happy we watched it. Thank you Ron Howard, the terrific actors and all involved to make this film-watching experience possible! Expand

Glenn Close’s performance lingers in memory. This is already worth watching this movie. She really deserves the Oscar this year! Forget the “overdue” thing they say about Glenn, it is absolutely insulting to her immaculate career. Glenn CloseGlenn Close’s performance lingers in memory. At least in this year, while staying at home and not many choices to entertain myself, this has been the only movie I enjoyed watching. The acting from the casts was very natural to me, and the story was intense and meaningful. It was a joy to watch.

I think it’s debatable to be anywhere from a 7.5 through a 9.0. I tend to score it higher due to the excellent performances from the whole cast and how consistently strong the tone held throughout. With a movie like this (that has frequent flashbacks) it can be extremely challenging to maintain the tone, but the editing team did a remarkable job in my opinion. The critic reviews though...waaaay off. I read through more than a few and most of the criticisms aren’t valid at all. But then again, I don’t think critic opinions carry a fraction of the weight that they used too. In all, if you found the trailer interesting this is an excellent watch. Expand

Raw and unfiltered, this movie shines a light on a boy who overcame a legacy of poverty and drug addiction. The acting, especially of Owen Asztalos, is outstanding as the narrative doesn't shy away from intense and difficult emotion.

A great story about trials and what it takes to find success in hard circumstances. A painful and inspiring story about an underrepresented demographic group.

Hillbilly Elegy explores the impact of a family on the past, present and future of a young man with potential. J.D. is called back to his humble hometown in Ohio when his mother, Bev, suffers a setback in her life. Throughout the film we see how Bev’s influence on her family has stunted her own life, put her children frequently at risk, and extended her own mother’s matriarchal duties. Faced with the unlikelihood that his mother will ever change, J.D. must decide how much he must sacrifice in his own life in order to perpetuate hers. Hillbilly Elegy is written by Vanessa Taylor (The Shape of Water) based on the book by J.D. Vance. It is directed by Ron Howard (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and, of course, Opie). It stars Amy Adams (Arrival, American Hustle) as Bev, and Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction, 101 Dalmatians) as Mamaw in an Oscar-worthy supporting role. The role of J.D. is played as an adult by Gabriel Basso (Super 8) and an emotionally thoughtful performance as young J.D. by Owen Asztalos (Jessica Jones, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul). J. D. is called home by his sister as his mother relapses into drug use, after many years of sobriety. The timing is unfortunate, as J. D., escaping the stereotype of his upbringing, is on the verge of accepting an Ivy League paid internship, which he needs to continue to pay for his remaining education. All he has to do is ace one of a number of interviews that are occurring just as his mother is falling back into addiction. And while J. D. acknowledges that his early years in Kentucky, then Ohio, were some of the happiest of his life, it is these moments that he has had to rise above all throughout. And we are shown that at many points throughout the movie, different people have had to take up slack where others were falling. But that’s exactly what family is, as this film defines. Hillbilly Elegy asks and answers the question: How much do we owe our mothers, and how deep does the debt lead. The answer is not simple, but winds around to what is best for everyone, as is often true with most families. Ron Howard will be cheated of an Oscar nomination within a crowded field, for a beautiful work well executed. Amy Adams will be on a lot of short lists for the honest portrayal of a lost lonely mom standing in her own way. Both Basso and Asztalos are remarkably sharp in playing a subtly angry and torn J. D. Vance, on whose life this film is based. But Glenn Close is a miracle playing Mamaw in an authentic turn of a present-day hillbilly, neither contrived nor satirical. Her message is the most important of the hillbilly: Family comes first, a creed she follows at all stages of life. When it comes to Academy voting, Close should come first in the Best Supporting Actress category and finally come home with an Oscar. Hillbilly Elegy has a lot of layers, but I recommend to anyone that will enjoy a sweet story about how families fail, yet affect us all in ways that allow us to succeed beyond the scars. I give Hillbilly Elegy 4.5/5 Stars for the story, the message, and one of the strongest acting ensembles in the category this year. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed this movie. I’ve watched it three times! Once was while I was alone so I could have a good cry. The things I disliked was there wasn’t very much backstory on JD and his sisters relationships with each actor and while you could tell there was supposed to be a strong bond between the siblings I felt like it could’ve just shown more history. More history of the entire story would be so interesting. This story seems like it has many nooks and crannies that could have been explored, however this is Hollywood and it’s for profit so they’re only interested in a short story/history, big scene, “fixing” things and then, something to learn. A lesson. This could’ve done better in some areas but overall I suggest it to people and like I said, I’ve watched it three times and each time I notice something different and I get all in my feels. Maybe a part 2? Maybe a series? Loved Mamaw. Amy Adams was amazing. Young JD seemed to have gotten the nail on the head. AND WOW!!! I didn’t realize how many people would use words like “smarmy”, “woe is me”, “shameless Oscar bait” when describing this movie. I feel like people hate what they may never have or experience or people hate because they have suffered as well. No one’s story is more or less important than this one. We all have experienced totally different scenarios. We may even have siblings, parents and friends that experienced the same thing at the same time but your thoughts and memories aren’t going to be the same. But neither would be wrong. I just don’t understand bashing someone’s heartfelt story telling... LIFE TELLING, makes anyone feel good. We should try to lift each other up. Expand
