The final forty-five minutes are also excellent, displaying superb effects and cinematography. Especially effective at the end is the gradual broadening of the field of vision, which makes the final fight sequence seem positively titanic. Unfortunately the middle of the film is an awkward montage of plot points and snippets of dialogue culled from the book. It is fairly amusing and cleverly done, but it is no substitute for an actual story. Expand

It did not do the books justice as it was far too short and did not include some main elements, such as the wit that Rowling manages to carefully exert into her books. It somehow manages to keep our interests though, because as the movie goes on, we find ourselves hoping for more. The ending was...understandable, although I would have preferred the ending written in the book. Nobody other than Harry was supposed to find out the prophecy, and I believe that this is a key feature in the books as Harry in later books learns how important love is. Although the ending made me cry as it really was great (when he was saved by love through his friends), it wasn't as written and Rowling was spot on originally. Expand

The fifth film's decent but it feels rushed and doesn't seem to flesh out the story as well as the others. Still worth watching if you're mad about all things Potter.

However, the plot is so boring and so ridiculously "unmagical" that it makes liking this film nearly impossible. Umbridge is just annoying rather than her evil version that is in the book, and the movie fails to put many of the gigantic book's minor plot points into the film. The fact that Sirius died in this film didn't help my opinion either. Expand

The direction of David Yates is not the finest work of the series. There are still strong performances and stunning imagery, but it falls short. An unfortunate step back for the franchise.

Potter isn't the same in the Order of the Phoenix. The fantastical bliss has turned to a dark sadness, but there is a determination about the film that keeps it worthy. The signature franchise visuals are also in full bloom.

Repetitive is perhaps the most accurate to describe 'Order of the Phoenix'. I could find hardly anything to enjoy apart from Umbridge. The trio are no longer so cute, only grown up but not getting any more interesting. Now it's more predictable.

I was going to write that this is the best of the HP films, but as I reflect further, I think that sentiment arises chiefly from lowered expectations brought on by how disappointing the first four movies have been. Each of them, including I was going to write that this is the best of the HP films, but as I reflect further, I think that sentiment arises chiefly from lowered expectations brought on by how disappointing the first four movies have been. Each of them, including Order of the Phoenix, leaves me shaking my head thinking of opportunities lost. It seems like the various directors have a check list of plot points from the books that they feel must be covered, regardless of whether they work cinematically. Again, Order of the Phoenix is no exception. I wish at least one of the directors would have had the courage to try to make a great movie rather than make a film of a Harry Potter book. For a "good vs. evil" film to really work, the audience must have an opportunity to get to know and detest the villain. On a day-to-day basis, the most constant villain in Harry's life is Snape. Yet he rarely gets a line and never gets screen time without Harry. As a consequence, he never becomes anything more than a stick figure - certainly he is no where near "real" enough to hate. The same goes for Draco Malfoy. If the movies spent as much time developing the dark side of life at Hogwarts, Harry's victories at the climax of each book would be much more significant and moving to the audience. On the plus side, I thought Radcliffe's acting was much improved, Helena Bohnam Carter was a welcome addition, and the cinematography was excellent (best since Prisoner of Azkaban). Sadly, the actors playing Ron and Hermione are still terrible, and Michael Gambon completely fails in showing the wisdom, kindness, and wit that make Dumbledore such a delightful character. Expand

Perhaps the Harry Potter saga took seven books to tell; it sure isn't supporting as many movies. This is easily the worst of the Potter films, full of moments that feel been-there, done that both within and outside the series itself. The narrative structure is identical to the last two films and is tired here; Harry and company endure trials leading up to a confrontation with Voldemort. But the writing and directorial approach is a step backwards from the increasingly grown-up and complex execution of the previous installments. Harry's centralization feels forced and false, while the previously razor-sharp Hogwarts faculty seems to have been lobotomized and de-fanged in the face of a silly foil. The climactic wizard-battle is poorly executed, feeling like an out-take from a Star Wars prequel before the CGI backgrounds were finished; the death of a key character -- which should be the emotional punch the movie needs -- carries little emotional resonance. Of course the basic premise is still hugely appealing, and the actors continue to grow into their roles, but overall this is a huge disappointment. Expand

One would think that after playing the same character for four straight movies that these young actors would have identified more with the frustrations of the declining state of Hogwarts along with pressures of tests that define their careers and tension of struggling friendships, but instead we are left with bland, confused faces as if trying to remember their lines in each scene. Not entirely their fault however as the performances of the young cast are only out-stunk by the terrible script. Again, it must've been a tough feat to fit roughly 900 pages into a 2+ hr movie, but not only does the story not incorporate the tension between Dumbledore and Poter, an important tone to the mood of the book, but each scene comes off entirely too serious without any emotion and not in the least bit connected. It's momentsThe latest installment in the Harry Potter series opens with a storm gathering precipitously over the young wizard's head, portending an attack by the Dementors, those soul-sucking wraiths that circle their prey like buzzards. It's moments like these that show how far J.K. Rowling's hero has come from the beginning, when he was delivered from a Dickensian home life into a gee-whiz world of flying broomsticks, whimsical creatures, and other magical enchantments. Now, dark clouds follow him around like Pig-Pen's filth, and being a wizard has become a joyless burden, a destiny that he grimly accepts as his lot in life. Though there are moments of levity scattered throughout Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix, the workmanlike fifth entry in the franchise, the overall feeling is that it sucks to be Harry Potter, and it's only going to get suckier from here on out.

Though he fends off the Dementors, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) gets expelled from Hogwarts School Of Witchcraft And Wizardry for using a forbidden curse in the presence of a "muggle." He wins back admittance on appeal, but many members of the Ministry Of Magic refuse to accept his contention that the evil Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes) has returned and plans to engage the forces of good in a battle royal. As a measure to keep Harry and his cohorts in line, the Ministry installs prim taskmaster Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) as the new professor of Dark Arts, and she keeps them busy with grueling memorization and paperwork. Harry revolts by creating Dumbledore's Army, a group of rebel students who harness their powers in a secret training room. He's also introduced to the Order Of The Phoenix, a clandestine faction preparing for a showdown with Voldemort.

While not all Harry Potter movies are created equal, consistency has been a major priority for the series, to the point where it's become the Prozac of blockbuster franchises—few highs or lows, just a general baseline of pleasing competence. Granted, there's a significant difference between the flat literalness of Chris Columbus' first two entries and Alfonso Cuarón's fanciful Prisoner Of Azkaban, but the films are telling one long story, and inspiration is often sacrificed for continuity's sake. Directed by David Yates, who has a background in British television, Order Of The Phoenix feels a little too complacent at times, though it has moments of visual wit, and it doesn't soft-pedal the dark mood that has eclipsed the series. Save for the thrilling opening sequence, there's not much to remember about the film beyond Staunton (Vera Drake), who masks her bottomless malevolence behind a pasted-on patrician smile. During this transitional stage, Dumbledore's Army and the Order Of The Phoenix prepare for bigger fights ahead—and presumably, more exciting movies, too.

To put things simply, shoddy writing is the film's major flaw, but not the only one. Uninspired and ultimately weak (And often awkward) direction is not helped in the task of making up for a lackluster script (More interested in ripping basic ideas from the book than exploring them in any detail) by an uninspired performance by an increasingly useless lead. Radcliffe's performance is stiff and lifeless, particularly in emotional scenes, such as those where has a go at this friends. Meanwhile, Warner Brothers set design continues their desire to make the mundain extraordinary, by making the Ministry of Magic - a conceivably dull place (Being a Governmental building) perhaps more impressive that Hogwarts itself. A big no-no. The book's most important scene, one in which Dumbledore shows Harry the Prophecy and tells him "everything", is butchered in a couple of awkward and considerably less well-conceived scenes. One scene in this set is considerably awkward and difficult to watch, being as it is so clearly out of place. It seems that after the series' superb fourth chapter, things have slipped to previously unheard of lows for Harry Potter. Even strong appearances from new cast members Imelda Staunton and Evana Lynch cannot rescue this train wreck. Avoid this movie at all costs. Expand

It bothers me when in a movie transcribed from a book, little details are rearranged and altered for no reason, and that seemed to happen constantly in this movie. I know that for times sake this must be the case, but why couldn't Moody show Harry the photo of the Order, and why did Cho rat the DA out, and why wasn't Sirius simply stunned instead of Avada Kedavra'ed, and why hasn't Peeves been in any of the movies, therefore preventing the Weasley's from uttering what is arguably the best line of the book, "give her hell from us, Peeves." The entire end of the movie was terrible. What happened to Harry screaming at Dumbledore in his office? What happened to, "Harry, I'm going to tell you everything." These were big moments in the book, and some of the most emotional, and they were reduced to nothing. The thing that probably bothers me the most, however, is Dumbledore. He has none of the wit and charm he possesses in the book. Bellowing "don't you have studying to do?" and being visibly pissed off in front of students is nothing something that is completely uncharacteristic of Dumbledore. Expand

Yes, the book dragged out a lot. Unfortunately, a lot of what made the book so good was the multiple subplots, and great setup for the final battle. For example, when Snape throws Harry out of Occlumency lessons after Harry sees his father bullying Snape, there's a huge sense of desperation in the book - not in the movie. There's also an incredibly important subplot of Ligilimency being used to trick Harry into the whole thing, and so on and so forth. Even aside from that kind of stuff that only people who either are huge fans of HP or have great factual recall will care about, the whole movie seemed rushed. The entire part prior to Dumbledore leaving was basically a bunch of snapshots of various events, with no cohesion in my opinion. Mediocre movie at best, absolutely terrible in comparison to the books. Expand

We are not talking about minor adjustments to plot, which is, as I think all of us can agree, a neccessary evil for transforming a 900pg book into a 100-200pg script. I am by no means a die-hard fan, but felt that the director over-emphasized the smallest of scenes in an effort to make the more more appealing to the usual "dumb movie-goer" audience. Take the Harry/Cho kiss. This wasn't even talked about in the book, yet was by far the longest single shot of the movie. It was the the rush rush rush of the movie was suddenly slowed-down for this one really unimportant moment. I wouldn't complain if that was an addition to an already true-to-the-story film. Changing the plot, as well, for unnecessary reasons is just pompus. I felt that by-far the acting in this movie was the worst, and that falls entirely on the director, not the actors, as we know they have done better. The young actors said they liked this director the best, which means he was probably the most laid back, which is obviously shown on screen in their portrayal. Evanna Lynch's pausing in between phrases was something that could have easily been fixed by building confidence with the character and the lines, another job that lies solely on the director. I have been told that the movie was easy to follow for someone who did not read the books, but I'm not sure how it's possible as I just read the book a few days ago, so it is fresh in my mind, and I could barely follow it myself. A waste of time and money. Next! Expand

The script in the film was awful. Diabolical. At the end when Harry tells them what Dumbleydore said, was painful to anyone who has seen movies with good dialogue. The acting for the most part was substandard, especially Harry (again) The praise Staunton has received has perhaps been unwarranted as Umbridge. I got the impression she really overplayed it, and that is easier than playing someone more complex and middle of the road. She aslo got way too much screentime compared to all the other adult actors, who were largely reduced to cameos. Also when Ron said, "WHo are you... Hermione Granger" it was as laughable as the "Get me a laptop" line from oceans 13. The effects were good obviously, but at the fight at the end, seeing as practically nothing had happened til then they just decided to pour all the effects in then and hope to wow people with that rather than making a good action scene. There was no artistic style lent to this film by the director unlike the 3rd film, and generlally not that good. Expand

Jumpy scenes; legions of characters introduced for seemingly no reason other than 'they were in the book', even though they contribute very little to the movie; pointless special effects scenes (how many times do we need to see Potter and his friends flying around?)... the list just goes on. Potter directors need to stop trying to wow us with special effects, because modern movies CANNOT be carried by CGI. Try inserting some flowing plot or intelligent dialouge next time, instead throwing together of this disjointed, boring, mess of a movie. Ron gets about five sentences and otherwise is forced to lurk in the background. Hermione just seems pointless, when she's so important in the books. And I think if you added up all the seconds the Hogwarts staff appear in this movie, you'd have, like, two minutes tops. The direction is a mess--really choppy and taking great big leaps in story so that you're left wondering why or how they got from point A to point D. It's like it wants to be a sleek and sophisticated action movie, and forgets that these stories take place in a richly imagined world of magic, where KIDS are supposed to be the heroes. Dumbledore and Voldemort fight like Yoda and that Christopher Lee character in Episode 1. Why? I've seen that fight already. This should look more interesting and new. The movie also looks cheap! (I mean, compared to the last two films.) It looks like they skimped on the effects budget. The final Ministry of Magic sequence is mostly black backgrounds and receding rows of orbs, like a big black storage buliding. The last 20 minutes were also shot to be shown in 3D on Imax screens and you can tell that they sacrificed making a good action sequence to just churn out "it's coming at you!" shots of magic wands and Death Eaters. Staunton and Rickman (Umbridge and Snape) both rock, though, and Luna looks and sounds exactly like I thought she should. I don't think this director knows or likes the Harry Potter books, deep down inside. Expand

I am a huge Harry Potter book fan. I am one of the weirdoes that actually like Book 5 but Mr. Yates and his screenwriter trashed this adaptation. It was over edited, rushed and choppy. It failed to tell a good story. While Radcliffe's acting has improved, he is still lacking in emotional range. Is Harry a one dimensional character? Radcliffe's facial expressions are so limited it is either blank or he's yelling (with blank looking eyes). I saw Equus and it was the same. I suspect he gets critical acclaim because so many people are cashing in on his coattails. I want him to truly earn the millions he's making. Even the fabulous performances of Imelda Staunton and Alan Rickman (he can do so much with so little screen time) couldn't save this movie for me. Do me a favor Warner Bros., buy David Yates out and get another director for HBP. And Daniel, I think you are a generally cool kind but acting lessons would not hurt. Check into a drama college. The new 'headmaster from hell' is not all that scary, just really annoying. And, the final climactic battle is well choreographed, but it feels like it inhabits an all togetter different film. This guy is probably the worst actor on the planet despite his butt naked performance on stage to try and garner some acclaim. It was a cheap shot and it did not work apparently. So glad I didn't see that. You'd think Daniel would invest in some acting lessons but more likely his problem is deeper. He is devoid of talent. He hasn't got IT. I'm sure they lose millions because of him, so why haven't they replaced him? Nobody knows, but I'll dance in the street if they do. And while they are replacing people they should re-cast Lupin. Who the hell is that puffy-faced actor? Lupin should look thin, tattered and tragically handsome--not like a puffer fish. Tonks was nicely cast though. I've always felt that Minerva looked much younger than the actor who portrays her. Nobody has mentioned how wasted Emma Thompson's performance iwas amongst that mess of a movie. You tend to forget the highlights because the rest was so overwhelmingly depressing. The movie is a shame, but I knew it would be since I have the fake screams of Daniel from the other movies (Aaaaahhhhhhh....Aaaahhhhh....Aahh....Ah) still ringing in my head. Rowling has engulfed us in. Yates is a horrible directing with the beginning scene nothing more than a child can portray. [***SPOILER**] The script and scene writers have ridiculed the book leaving out every single point exept the battle between voldemort and Potter. Within the first few minutes Potter was safe again at his poor Sirius house, this angered me with this taking over 80 pages which showed Harry confusion and anger towards his situation, Quidditch plays no further part in this movie which is also a large majority of the book. Hagrid sudden intrusion into the centre stage is not stabilised as there is little communication with Potter, Weasley and Granger showing why he wasn't there. Also this scene takes place during Quidditch is on in the book. Cho is portrayed as the traitor when it was actually Marrietta, Cho's friend who betrays harry to the ministry official, Dolores Umbridge. Cho is not shown as a very emotional person throughout the novel exept during their defensive class and their meating at Hogsmeade with Rita Skitter is also absent in the movie. With the expectation people had to viewing this film many of our expectations have been thrawted by the way this movie was shown and its less than proffesional director. I for one felt very upset with the way this movie was portrayed and this has led me to the aligations I have put foward in this text. This is no joke, nor a contest, I am just dissapointed by this performance of the world's greatest book. Expand

The worst HP movie yet. Absolutely horrible acting; but, nice special effects as usual.

First of all, JK Rowling keeps the story with the same amount of character development and lets them have roles. In this, its just The Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter's army of 5. Cho Chang is like being bullied with Harry who kissed her violating her. Its a powerfull movie but I didn't get much out of it, it got annoying, the 3D sequence in IMAX was great, but all the movie is is training for a powerfull army to kill voldamort's, and the battle just begins at the very end. The movie felt so short, Most of the supporting roles are like taken out of the whole story. I am very dissapointed, it could have had more story. Expand
