We are not talking about minor adjustments to plot, which is, as I think all of us can agree, a neccessary evil for transforming a 900pg book into a 100-200pg script. I am by no means a die-hard fan, but felt that the director over-emphasized the smallest of scenes in an effort to make the more more appealing to the usual "dumb movie-goer" audience. Take the Harry/Cho kiss. This wasn't even talked about in the book, yet was by far the longest single shot of the movie. It was the the rush rush rush of the movie was suddenly slowed-down for this one really unimportant moment. I wouldn't complain if that was an addition to an already true-to-the-story film. Changing the plot, as well, for unnecessary reasons is just pompus. I felt that by-far the acting in this movie was the worst, and that falls entirely on the director, not the actors, as we know they have done better. The young actors said they liked this director the best, which means he was probably the most laid back, which is obviously shown on screen in their portrayal. Evanna Lynch's pausing in between phrases was something that could have easily been fixed by building confidence with the character and the lines, another job that lies solely on the director. I have been told that the movie was easy to follow for someone who did not read the books, but I'm not sure how it's possible as I just read the book a few days ago, so it is fresh in my mind, and I could barely follow it myself. A waste of time and money. Next! Expand

I've seen better and I was quite disappointed when I fist saw the movie. I though it would look great after the goblet of fire, but still the forth is the best Harry Potter movie although a lot of stuff had been left out. It's a shame that they left out Quidditch and Ron and Hermione becoming a prefects. When you see it several times it clearly shows that it isn't great. Good, maybe even average, but not great. The best thing in the film is battle between Voldermort and Dumbldor, and the character of Dolores Umbridge. If the half blood prince turns out as his predecessor I very much doubt it that I'll buy that dvd. Expand

The script in the film was awful. Diabolical. At the end when Harry tells them what Dumbleydore said, was painful to anyone who has seen movies with good dialogue. The acting for the most part was substandard, especially Harry (again) The praise Staunton has received has perhaps been unwarranted as Umbridge. I got the impression she really overplayed it, and that is easier than playing someone more complex and middle of the road. She aslo got way too much screentime compared to all the other adult actors, who were largely reduced to cameos. Also when Ron said, "WHo are you... Hermione Granger" it was as laughable as the "Get me a laptop" line from oceans 13. The effects were good obviously, but at the fight at the end, seeing as practically nothing had happened til then they just decided to pour all the effects in then and hope to wow people with that rather than making a good action scene. There was no artistic style lent to this film by the director unlike the 3rd film, and generlally not that good. Expand

The momentum that has been building through the previous 4 films lags in this disappointing film adaptation. The plot is so creaky and uninvolving that you may have to check your pulse at some point. The new 'headmaster from hell' is not all that scary, just really annoying. And, the final climactic battle is well choreographed, but it feels like it inhabits an all togetter different film. Also, many of the actors appear bored with reprising their roles for the fifth time. In addition, the greatest crime this installment commits is that it isn't any fun. Its downbeat tone and grim portents just make you want to see all of this wrapped up very soon. Not recommended! Expand

The movie put atleast 80% of the important information into corny, cliche spinning news paper montages. For example, nearly half of the movie went by when they explained Umbridge (or whatever her name was) was arrested, and that Dumbledoor had been reinstated. That was not content worthy for new paper headlines. That deserved full scenes. Don't bother with the movie if you are a movie fan. This guy is probably the worst actor on the planet despite his butt naked performance on stage to try and garner some acclaim. It was a cheap shot and it did not work apparently. So glad I didn't see that. You'd think Daniel would invest in some acting lessons but more likely his problem is deeper. He is devoid of talent. He hasn't got IT. I'm sure they lose millions because of him, so why haven't they replaced him? Nobody knows, but I'll dance in the street if they do. And while they are replacing people they should re-cast Lupin. Who the hell is that puffy-faced actor? Lupin should look thin, tattered and tragically handsome--not like a puffer fish. Tonks was nicely cast though. I've always felt that Minerva looked much younger than the actor who portrays her. Nobody has mentioned how wasted Emma Thompson's performance iwas amongst that mess of a movie. You tend to forget the highlights because the rest was so overwhelmingly depressing. The movie is a shame, but I knew it would be since I have the fake screams of Daniel from the other movies (Aaaaahhhhhhh....Aaaahhhhh....Aahh....Ah) still ringing in my head. How stupid do these movie makers think we are? Plenty--we keep going to see this trash. Expand

Potter directors need to stop trying to wow us with special effects, because modern movies CANNOT be carried by CGI. Try inserting some flowing plot or intelligent dialouge next time, instead throwing together of this disjointed, boring, mess of a movie. Rowling has engulfed us in. Yates is a horrible directing with the beginning scene nothing more than a child can portray. [***SPOILER**] The script and scene writers have ridiculed the book leaving out every single point exept the battle between voldemort and Potter. Within the first few minutes Potter was safe again at his poor Sirius house, this angered me with this taking over 80 pages which showed Harry confusion and anger towards his situation, Quidditch plays no further part in this movie which is also a large majority of the book. Hagrid sudden intrusion into the centre stage is not stabilised as there is little communication with Potter, Weasley and Granger showing why he wasn't there. Also this scene takes place during Quidditch is on in the book. Cho is portrayed as the traitor when it was actually Marrietta, Cho's friend who betrays harry to the ministry official, Dolores Umbridge. Cho is not shown as a very emotional person throughout the novel exept during their defensive class and their meating at Hogsmeade with Rita Skitter is also absent in the movie. With the expectation people had to viewing this film many of our expectations have been thrawted by the way this movie was shown and its less than proffesional director. I for one felt very upset with the way this movie was portrayed and this has led me to the aligations I have put foward in this text. Ron gets about five sentences and otherwise is forced to lurk in the background. Hermione just seems pointless, when she's so important in the books. And I think if you added up all the seconds the Hogwarts staff appear in this movie, you'd have, like, two minutes tops. The direction is a mess--really choppy and taking great big leaps in story so that you're left wondering why or how they got from point A to point D. It's like it wants to be a sleek and sophisticated action movie, and forgets that these stories take place in a richly imagined world of magic, where KIDS are supposed to be the heroes. Dumbledore and Voldemort fight like Yoda and that Christopher Lee character in Episode 1. Why? I've seen that fight already. This should look more interesting and new. The movie also looks cheap! (I mean, compared to the last two films.) It looks like they skimped on the effects budget. The final Ministry of Magic sequence is mostly black backgrounds and receding rows of orbs, like a big black storage buliding. The last 20 minutes were also shot to be shown in 3D on Imax screens and you can tell that they sacrificed making a good action sequence to just churn out "it's coming at you!" shots of magic wands and Death Eaters. Staunton and Rickman (Umbridge and Snape) both rock, though, and Luna looks and sounds exactly like I thought she should. I don't think this director knows or likes the Harry Potter books, deep down inside. Expand

It was the longest book, yet the shortest movie. The previous four movies left things out and changed some things around, but i feel they did so without compromising the integrity, plot, and accuracy of the book. But OOTP changed way too much. Some little things were only changed for the sake of changing and would have taken about thirty seconds longer to do it the correct way (a.k.a. in the movie neville finds the room of requirement by chance, when in the book harry asks dobby if he knows of a place where they can go, and dobby suggests it). And some bigger aspects of the book were also changed to fit the movie (a.k.a how Cho Chang was blamed for telling Umbridge about Dumbledore's Army, when it was really her friend Marietta who was nervous about getting caught. This is a major plot change, because in the Sixth book Harry has another thing with Cho, which according to the movie would be highly unlikely now that he thinks shes a traitor)(in the battle at the department of mysteries Lucius Malfoy never has his hands on the prophecy and Neville is the one who drops it causing it to break so no one can hear it. oh and also at that moment in the movie, Sirius punches Malfoy? I'm pretty sure he has a wand and could have done much more with a simple Stupefy!) Also things were changed that were pre-established in the previous movies (the look of Sirius' face in the fire when talking to Harry in his dorm. the look of the dementors). I feel the new director really let the die-hard harry potter fans down with this poor excuse for a harry potter movie. Expand

I read all the hype and believed it. I even thought the reason why they asked David Yates to do Movie 6 is because he kicked butt on this one. No way. Why did they ask him back? Are his rates cheap? I am a huge Harry Potter book fan. I am one of the weirdoes that actually like Book 5 but Mr. Yates and his screenwriter trashed this adaptation. It was over edited, rushed and choppy. It failed to tell a good story. While Radcliffe's acting has improved, he is still lacking in emotional range. Is Harry a one dimensional character? Radcliffe's facial expressions are so limited it is either blank or he's yelling (with blank looking eyes). I saw Equus and it was the same. I suspect he gets critical acclaim because so many people are cashing in on his coattails. I want him to truly earn the millions he's making. Even the fabulous performances of Imelda Staunton and Alan Rickman (he can do so much with so little screen time) couldn't save this movie for me. Do me a favor Warner Bros., buy David Yates out and get another director for HBP. And Daniel, I think you are a generally cool kind but acting lessons would not hurt. Check into a drama college.
