The storyline was too disjointed and poorly paced and at times bulked out by complete filler, house elves and trolls should have been left out altogether. Overall it lacked drama and the climax (usually the best part of each Potter film) was only mediocre. The Dumbledore, voldemort clash was completely undermined. Ironically the people who will enjoy this are the people who have not read the book. For me, its only adequate. Expand

The writing style of the books bore and the movies to this point had been little more then good kids movies. Phoenix leave sup to its billy as the most adult oriented Potter and delivers in tone, action story. Easily my favorite Potter movie.

The previous four have been mostly disappointing. The first two were a product of a director who had no idea how to direct children and relied on cheap thrills to cover horrible dialogue and flow (to which I blame those who adapted the book to film, not the source material). The second was more of the same, with even worse acting from the youngsters (I blame the director again). The third was the best of the four, despite what many will say. Cuaron made Harry Potter in to a respectable movie franchise. His art house style of directing turned off many of the mainstream crowd, but he was able to save a plot that involved nothing more than Harry saving his uncle. The fourth lacked skilled direction, though was exciting enough to be the most enjoyable. I had not expected the fifth to be the most well done and most exciting. The book was easilly the worst of the series, being just an 800 page set up for the next book. But the movie, under a no name director, makes the characters very real and the storyline very relevant. It doesn't take longer than 5 minutes of this film to understand that this fictional England full of fear, disillusion, and paranoia is our world. In terror, we, like the wizard world, give up reason and our trust to authorities, and horrible things can happen. And while the book lacked any real story, the movie moves at such a pase that you never notice, but you get in to the characters. The climax can not be understated. It was amazing. With the showdown at the end, wizard duels have become what they should have been from the beginning. They have done for wizards what light sabers have done for jedi. Despite what those who wish for Harry to live in a wonderful world of magic and tame adventures might tell you, I'm ecstatic to hear that David Yates will be directing the next movie, and possibly the last. He has come the closest to making Harry Potter the movie series it begs to be. Expand

However, after a good start it quickly became rather jerky and telegraphic in pacing. I suspect many not familiar with the story may find it confusing. Because of the frenetic editing style, character development was limited. I also found the egregious addition of a new type of attack magic detracted from the believability of the climactic sequence. I have read all the books to date and have also seen all the movies (god knows why as most of them have disappointed me) and this Film has to be the second worst. after the third being the worst. ill explain my Views. the third being the worst as the main story of the book was twisted and rearranged into the film it screwed up the book. and this new film disappointed me as it missed out much of the plot and most of all the final battle although may have been ok in the film the Book version is longer and more thrilling therefore 3 times better than the film. on there own the harry potter films are all fairly great but. as some one who has read all the books. they are on the bulk unfaithful and miss seriously important parts of the plot. my advice if your one who loves the films read the books. they are much better. if you have read the books but not watched the films. then don't expect much or if possible avoid the films p.s 4th and 2nd films are the best. that saying the second film missed out a vital part of the story that did not add much to the 2nd film/story b But does explain a lot in the 6th book those of you who don't know what I'm on about its the cupboard in the dark shop that harry ends up in that is in fact a teleporter which leads to another teleporter inside the room of requirements. The first 2 were boring, and the 4th was way to abbreviated for a book with so much going on. It was like Cliffs notes. With "Order" however you get that same painful abbreviation but book 5 itself was a bit drawn out and boring in that it was bloated with superfulous nonsense more than half the time so there is plenty of fat to trim away, leaving the movie as a more focused, sleeker version of the main story. Is it better than the book? No, absolutely not. One of the biggest problems with the "trimming" is that as emotions run high in book 5 and the movie focuses on action and Voldemort (the main story if you will) the emotional build up of Harry's struggle with his destiny and just growing up is lost in the fold leaving you a bit empty by the end, however not nearly as empty as the unimpactful death of Cedric @ the end of "Goblet", so it is an imporvement. The movie cerainly has it high's and low's but I would say "Order" is easily my second favorite of the movie franchise after "Azkaban". Which says alot as "Order" is my least favorite of the books. We are not talking about minor adjustments to plot, which is, as I think all of us can agree, a neccessary evil for transforming a 900pg book into a 100-200pg script. I am by no means a die-hard fan, but felt that the director over-emphasized the smallest of scenes in an effort to make the more more appealing to the usual "dumb movie-goer" audience. Take the Harry/Cho kiss. This wasn't even talked about in the book, yet was by far the longest single shot of the movie. It was the the rush rush rush of the movie was suddenly slowed-down for this one really unimportant moment. I wouldn't complain if that was an addition to an already true-to-the-story film. Changing the plot, as well, for unnecessary reasons is just pompus. I felt that by-far the acting in this movie was the worst, and that falls entirely on the director, not the actors, as we know they have done better. The young actors said they liked this director the best, which means he was probably the most laid back, which is obviously shown on screen in their portrayal. Evanna Lynch's pausing in between phrases was something that could have easily been fixed by building confidence with the character and the lines, another job that lies solely on the director. I have been told that the movie was easy to follow for someone who did not read the books, but I'm not sure how it's possible as I just read the book a few days ago, so it is fresh in my mind, and I could barely follow it myself. A waste of time and money. Next! Expand

Of course, there was definitely room for improvement, for example the lack of a better fight scene at the end, and Dumbledore being completely different to the book. I wish Richard Harris (Dumbledore in the first two movies) was still with us, he did a much better job. Apart from the few negatives though, I think Yates did a really good job of balancing pure film-making creative license, i.e. choosing which parts of the book to exclude, and staying true to the book. It couldn't have been any longer or it would have started to bore people, and I think each of the important bits of the book were touched upon FLUENTLY. Compared to other movies where scenes tend to jump around alot, this movie was very fluid. Not a 10 for the reasons stated, but definitly a solid 9. Expand

The momentum that has been building through the previous 4 films lags in this disappointing film adaptation. The plot is so creaky and uninvolving that you may have to check your pulse at some point. The new 'headmaster from hell' is not all that scary, just really annoying. And, the final climactic battle is well choreographed, but it feels like it inhabits an all togetter different film. Also, many of the actors appear bored with reprising their roles for the fifth time. In addition, the greatest crime this installment commits is that it isn't any fun. This is the fifth Potter film, and so anyoen walking int othe theatre is gong to know what they are in store for. Also anyone who has read the book knows the material already, so all we can really rate is the direction and the adaptation of the story. The direction is capable, but at times puzzing with eiditing that is breaknect during important scenes and laxadaisical when languishing on unimportant special effects. (Is it more important to spend 30 seconds on watching the kids make animated paper airplanes, or explaining how Harry feels about Cho in the third act of the film?). The adaptation was also weak, choosing to make the main story of the film about hte rise and fall of Delores Umbridge instead of about the feeling of hopelessness and insecurity at Hogwarts as the students have everything that makes them feel safe systematically stripped away. Harry choosing to form the D.A. and effectively fight BACK is supposed to be a big moment in his character and the story. This is not handled well in the film, I think, and thereby make the whole Order of the Phoenix story into a filler. This was an important chapter to nail, and it's sad that it was mishandled. Especially after how amazing the last two films have been. I'm sad to hear the director will be back again for the next Potter film. Expand

Yes, the book dragged out a lot. Unfortunately, a lot of what made the book so good was the multiple subplots, and great setup for the final battle. For example, when Snape throws Harry out of Occlumency lessons after Harry sees his father bullying Snape, there's a huge sense of desperation in the book - not in the movie. There's also an incredibly important subplot of Ligilimency being used to trick Harry into the whole thing, and so on and so forth. Even aside from that kind of stuff that only people who either are huge fans of HP or have great factual recall will care about, the whole movie seemed rushed. The entire part prior to Dumbledore leaving was basically a bunch of snapshots of various events, with no cohesion in my opinion. Mediocre movie at best, absolutely terrible in comparison to the books. Expand

Ron gets about five sentences and otherwise is forced to lurk in the background. Hermione just seems pointless, when she's so important in the books. And I think if you added up all the seconds the Hogwarts staff appear in this movie, you'd have, like, two minutes tops. The direction is a mess--really choppy and taking great big leaps in story so that you're left wondering why or how they got from point A to point D. It's like it wants to be a sleek and sophisticated action movie, and forgets that these stories take place in a richly imagined world of magic, where KIDS are supposed to be the heroes. Dumbledore and Voldemort fight like Yoda and that Christopher Lee character in Episode 1. Why? I've seen that fight already. This should look more interesting and new. The movie also looks cheap! (I mean, compared to the last two films.) It looks like they skimped on the effects budget. The final Ministry of Magic sequence is mostly black backgrounds and receding rows of orbs, like a big black storage buliding. The last 20 minutes were also shot to be shown in 3D on Imax screens and you can tell that they sacrificed making a good action sequence to just churn out "it's coming at you!" shots of magic wands and Death Eaters. Staunton and Rickman (Umbridge and Snape) both rock, though, and Luna looks and sounds exactly like I thought she should. I don't think this director knows or likes the Harry Potter books, deep down inside. Expand

As a matter of fact, I can't think of a better movie adaptation that the one that David Yates just did with the Order of the Phoenix. He just Harry's 5th year on the big screen has been the greatest of all so far if you ask me. As a matter of fact, I can't think of a better movie adaptation that the one that David Yates just did with the Order of the Phoenix. He just made a 2h18 movie -the shortest Harry Potter movie so far- from the thickest Harry Potter novel. Yates condensated the essential elements of the novel, and filled the movie with a lot of non-spoken and subtle details not only taken from the book, but also setting up the table for what's about to come... Every single actor has been wonderful (except Daniel Radcliffe... sorry, but he really sucks). Especially Umbridge and Luna Lovegood; even if they didn't fit the mental image I had of them both, they were brilliant. and I'm glad that Dumbledore finally took his Ritalin... Even if you excuse the very slow start, the pacing was way off, and many characters were left just worrying about Harry rather than being developed at all. I place a lot of the blame on the fact that screenwriter Steve Kloves was apparently moved forward to the more important sixth movie, and this movie was put in the hands of "Bed of Roses" and "Contact" screenwriter Michael Goldenberg. The choppy direction by David Yates does little more than attempt to sloppily mimic the two great directors that preceded him. Let's hope for better in the future. I left the theatre for the first time disappointed. Expand

Nearly without exception, all of the low scores justify their assessments as reflections of the movie's failure to adhere to the book (and even change the book in parts). Well, kids, I'll tell you what a "4"-rated movie would be--an 81/2 hour visual carbon copy of the Rowling written work. Good heavens that would suck (and would lack any creative exercise). Anyway, after 4 movies, one would think the kids would understand the necessary challenge of altering a book to become a movie. Now, for my assessment of the movie as a movie: It's the best Potter film yet. "Phoenix" is the first movie to really grasp the main characters as living, breathing, modern humans--rather than as transposed caricatures--and connect their humanity to the viewer. It was more than fun or entertaining--it was emotionally charged and compelling. Book lovers (of whom I am one) should be able to separate themselves from movie lovers and judge each on its own merits. Expand

The script in the film was awful. Diabolical. At the end when Harry tells them what Dumbleydore said, was painful to anyone who has seen movies with good dialogue. The acting for the most part was substandard, especially Harry (again) The praise Staunton has received has perhaps been unwarranted as Umbridge. I got the impression she really overplayed it, and that is easier than playing someone more complex and middle of the road. She aslo got way too much screentime compared to all the other adult actors, who were largely reduced to cameos. Also when Ron said, "WHo are you... Hermione Granger" it was as laughable as the "Get me a laptop" line from oceans 13. The effects were good obviously, but at the fight at the end, seeing as practically nothing had happened til then they just decided to pour all the effects in then and hope to wow people with that rather than making a good action scene. There was no artistic style lent to this film by the director unlike the 3rd film, and generlally not that good. Expand

It bothers me when in a movie transcribed from a book, little details are rearranged and altered for no reason, and that seemed to happen constantly in this movie. I know that for times sake this must be the case, but why couldn't Moody show Harry the photo of the Order, and why did Cho rat the DA out, and why wasn't Sirius simply stunned instead of Avada Kedavra'ed, and why hasn't Peeves been in any of the movies, therefore preventing the Weasley's from uttering what is arguably the best line of the book, "give her hell from us, Peeves." The entire end of the movie was terrible. What happened to Harry screaming at Dumbledore in his office? What happened to, "Harry, I'm going to tell you everything." These were big moments in the book, and some of the most emotional, and they were reduced to nothing. The thing that probably bothers me the most, however, is Dumbledore. He has none of the wit and charm he possesses in the book. Bellowing "don't you have studying to do?" and being visibly pissed off in front of students is nothing something that is completely uncharacteristic of Dumbledore. Expand

Of course the book went on for far too long but the ending of HP and The Order of The Phoenix was it's strong point, very emotional and shocking, something which was not conveyed in the movie adequately. When Sirius dies in the book it is one of the saddest parts of all the HP books, and the emotion just didn't come through. Whether that is from bad directing or acting... maybe a combination of the two I don't know. On a brighter note, I thought Imelda Staunton, Gary Oldman and Evanna Lynch were all impressive. I hope this director 'gets it' for the next one. He has far better material to work with so you would bloody well hope so. Expand

One would think that after playing the same character for four straight movies that these young actors would have identified more with the frustrations of the declining state of Hogwarts along with pressures of tests that define their careers and tension of struggling friendships, but instead we are left with bland, confused faces as if trying to remember their lines in each scene. Not entirely their fault however as the performances of the young cast are only out-stunk by the terrible script. Again, it must've been a tough feat to fit roughly 900 pages into a 2+ hr movie, but not only does the story not incorporate the tension between Dumbledore and Poter, an important tone to the mood of the book, but each scene comes off entirely too serious without any emotion and not in the least bit connected. For once in this film series, these characters felt like real characters and they finally resembled their book counterparts. For once we have a coherent story that doesn't just jump from scene to scene. Finally we have characters who talk and act like real kids.Yes, this is a slower, more character-driven film than past ones (like the book,) but it all builds tension and dramatically builds up to huge action scenes at the end. Supposedly. And that's where director David Yates, unfortunately, dropped the ball. The action scenes at the end, meant to be a huge battle and the big stand of good vs. evil, is entirely ruined in the film. The main characters spend the entire movie preparing for a final battle that lasts...what...2 minutes? Similarly, the fight of 2 powerful wizards also goes by way too quickly and lacks intensity. And the explanations that take place after this big "finale" are probably the quickest and most inadequate in this film series so far, leading up to a tacked on ending. I don't know what happened. The movie was perfect, the last half hour was just entirely ruined. David Yates had better learn how to craft strong action scenes, because he's returning for Half Blood Prince. (Something I was thrilled about until I saw how he ruined the Ministry of Magic scenes.) And will these film people finally get Dumbledore right? He does not yell at students, EVER, and his facial expressions during the big battle at the end didn't fit his character at all. Expand

During all the movie you want to help Harry and his friends against the Ministry, and that's a good thing...that means the story holds up emotionally. It's successful parts really made up for some of the bad screenwriting/editing (ugh, and some of the choices the screenwriter made were total crap) but I loved Umbridge, Luna and Bellatrix--perfectly cast. Even little Ginny was pretty prominent in certain scenes (hint hint). Harry's emotional "growing" is still the centerpiece as in the book. Plot-wise, unless you read the book, you'll have no idea what ground was made as they really don't go that far (or show it anyway) & ironically the "Order of the Phoenix" is largely cut out of the film. The end climax scene in the Ministry is done very well though. I still think PoA might be the better Potter film so far, but OotP is definitely vying for the top. Expand
