But this one is probably the most dark, intense and interesting out of all of them. The innocence within Harry Potter and his friends has completely vanished. This film is a real character study of Harry, but only Harry. There is very little development for the other characters. They for the most part serve as nothing more but a supporting cast, unlike previous chapters, which weakens the film. But overall, it's entertaining and remarkably acted, especially Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Imelda Staunton (Dolores Umbridge). Helena Bonham Carter was remarkable as well, but I felt her character (Bellatrix Lestrange) was very much underused. 3/4 stars. Expand

With newbie director David Yates in control of the Harry Potter franchise, the movie's 'order' has been severely complex, making the wonderful acting from the potter trio & the marvelous CGI kinda hard to follow.

It was a solid movie. There's not much to say about it. It is in the dead center of the Harry potter movies. The wickedness of Umbridge is probably the best part of it

Yes, even worse than Prisoner of Azkaban. But, it was Prisoner of Azkaban that prepared me for future films. Goblet of Fire may have been a very faithful adaptation of the book, but I didn't let my guard down. I knew that there was a good chance that there would be another film that would be rather thin in the loyalty department. Therefore, I was able to enjoy Order of the Phoenix. I'll start with the positives. Like I said, the acting is great; the main 3 had really come into their own at this point. Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes), despite the brief role, is just as diabolical as before. Umbridge (Imelda Staunton) might be the best character in the film, as you will hate her from the get-go. Visually, it is also very impressive. Beautiful, actually. Next, come the complaints. By being thin in the loyalty department I MEAN thin. David Yates condensed a 760 page book into a 139 minute film (shortest in the series if you don't count Deathly Hallows Part 2). This creates a few problems... First of all, the secondary characters get very little screen time. Ginny Weasley actually has about 2 lines in the whole film (although she is in most of it), and she is an important character. A scene that would have been awesome was the Quidditch scene, where Harry punches Malfoy. If they had shown a little more of the Ministry scene (the magical rooms in the department of mysteries), that would have let me give this film at least an 8... maybe a 9. I know that people have complained about the films' lengths, but what's an extra 15 minutes? Expand

What Order of the Phoenix becomes is an often funny yet extremely dark thrill ride, much unlike its long and drawn out source. The new political themes are handled well, and as always in this series the actors did a phenomenal job. Its climax is also one of the series' best, with a dazzling battle between Dumbeldore and Voldemort amid a hail of shattered glass. In the end, Order of the Phoenix manages to do the impossible and be almost better than the book it was based on. Expand

When Lord Voldemort is already having armies at his command, Harry, Ron, Hermoine, and gang battle against him as they encounter new enemies and old enemies before Harry learns that "neither one can live while the other survives". I've saw this in a theater in Fredericksburg, Virginia, enjoyed it and now time for my opinion to make this review a little bit short. The fantasy action was amazing, the acting was neat and entertaining, the characters were a little bit developed, the villian Lord Voldemort was intimidating, but a lot of fun thanks to Ralph Fiennes' amazing performance, and the storyline was well-paced. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is an entertaining entry of the fantastic series. Next two reviews are HP6 and HP7 Part 1. 8/10 Expand

Another important thing is the new director, David Yates, who will close this saga, the last being the division of the seventh book. Some dislike it, hated the choice, they argue that the return of Alfonso Cuaron would have been a better choice, do not know the reasons for this has not been done but we agree with that thought. Want to know what to think of it? Wonderful, this means that Harry Potter, even in his fifth film, has the chops to stay in front, with people debating its positive and negative, it just proves the success of the series. The most interesting is that it will continue delighting every fan spread across the planet, each person, like me, who believe that Harry Potter is not just a passing fad, and that is very, very much further. Well written, great acting, amazing production, and a moving emotional plot that fans will be pleased with. It wasn't perfect, but it's the closest movie in the entire franchise up to this point that was close to perfection. As for every Harry Potter movie, every character has a unique role and every actor plays their part well. The film like all the others, has a natural tendency to not be perfect. David Yates has put the franchise where it needs to be, and where fans want it. He has adapted the 5th book in the best way possible and with the technology that stands as of 2007, the effects are impressive. This movie stands out more than any other film up to this point, and I hope the fans feel the same thing. Expand

Voldeemort remains one of the greatest movie villains of all time, and the young ensemble cast prove that they are maturing into fine young actors. What the hell has happened to Warner bros!!?? This movie puts a masterpiece novel to shame. The only similarities between the novel and the movie are the names of the characers and places. Nothing else! Music (if there was any) is the weakest point of the movie!! Story... I'm a die hard fan of Harry Potter but watching this movie makes me very drowsy. The ootp novel is one of the best but looks like this movie has been made by a bunch of people who have just lost everything. It's so dull!! Acting... This time Daniel has improved a lot. Rupert and Emma were good as usual. Imelda as Umbridge rocked but I think she was given more than enough screen space. At the end of the movie I was tired of watching her but it's the fault of the newbie screenwriter and director. Gary Oldman as Sirius was fabulous. Watching Harry and Siruis together was a real enjoyment. Michael Gambon as Dumbledore was a little better but still Richard Harris was the true Dumbledore. May he rest in peace. Direction... I'd only say that David Yates ruined it! Visuals... They were ok. Nothing extraordinary. The end fight which was the most hyped was the most boring in the movie especially the fight between Dumbledore and Voldemort. Why don't they stick to the book?! I feel like crying!!!! The only nice thing about this movie is the acting and the scene when Voldemort gets inside Harry. Expand

It's not advisable to make a movie over three hours long, because after that it's a wee bit too much to watch on one sitting, but ironically three hours of movie isn't quite enough to sum up the plot of a book as long as The Order Of Phoenix. Despite it's length, in many parts it feels like the story is rushed to the next key point, and many aspects of the book (f.ex. quidditch) have been completely dropped off. Because the storytelling in the movie is processing with such fast pace, it may be hard for people who have not read the actual book to follow the quick advancing of the story. You should judge the movie by it's own merits, it is decent work as a visual captivation of the Harry Potter- universe, and a nice supporting view in parallel with the one you yourself have created in your mind while reading the book. As a stand-alone movie experience however, without reading the book, it is merely an average piece of work. Expand

David Yates really captured the spirit of Harry Potter and the way J.K has written it. The only down fall is Daniel Radcliffe as I do not think his standard of acting is at the same level as Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, as they both so real flair in there rolls in the film. Another draw back was seeing that it was the longest book out of the 7 why wasn't it the longest film out of the 5 made so far, clearing showing not enough information was put in as a lot of unexplained answers will not been given to use, such as in the 5 book the lockets is in headquarters even though they didn't no of its importance. As usual, the acting and CGI is decent enough and especially Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint who continue to widen their reputation as decent British actors. The cast once again make the film almost believable and the portrayal as Lord Voldemort is captured perfectly. The plot, though one of the finest in the book series as the teenagers go through dark times as the Death Eaters rise, often misses out explaining key details with the film missing out parts of the book altogether making it hard to follow and hurried. Firstly, for whatever reason, the film was too short, as a result key parts would be ignored in order to make the film giving it a broken plot look. For those who have read the Harry Potter book, the film lives up to a majority of fans expectations with David Yates delivering a realistic, decent experience of the Harry Potter universe, switching between the happy times of Harry Potter series to more dark and sinister plot elements with apparent ease. Perhaps the Harry Potter saga took seven books to tell; it sure isn't supporting as many movies. This is easily the worst of the Potter films, full of moments that feel been-there, done that both within and outside the series itself. The narrative structure is identical to the last two films and is tired here; Harry and company endure trials leading up to a confrontation with Voldemort. But the writing and directorial approach is a step backwards from the increasingly grown-up and complex execution of the previous installments. Harry's centralization feels forced and false, while the previously razor-sharp Hogwarts faculty seems to have been lobotomized and de-fanged in the face of a silly foil. The climactic wizard-battle is poorly executed, feeling like an out-take from a Star Wars prequel before the CGI backgrounds were finished; the death of a key character -- which should be the emotional punch the movie needs -- carries little emotional resonance. Of course the basic premise is still hugely appealing, and the actors continue to grow into their roles, but overall this is a huge disappointment. Expand

This movie did some things very well, and others not so well. I thought the acting was good, the atmosphere was dark and foreboding as it's supposed to be, the special effects were great (I don't know what Charles C. is complaining about), but they messed up on the story, which is the biggest disappointment. -It was great that a lot of the unneeded parts were cut from the book, which was far too long (even J.K. Rowling admits this), and in terms of plot, the fifth book had the least going on. BUT, they had only two parts that they needed to truly get right for the movie, which they messed up. [***SPOILER**] 1) The battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort. It could have been a bit longer and more imaginative. True, they didn't need to follow the fight exactly like in the book because it's just a fight scene and doesn't develop the story, but having Dumbledore bring those statues to life as in the book would've rocked (or they could have expanded the fight in their own way). 2) The prophecy. This is the MOST important part of book 5; it's the climax and moment of revelation. This is one of the few parts of the book where something actually happens and affects the overall stories. But all we get in the movie is some obscure voice (not knowing it's professor Trelawny makes her character pointless in the movie because her importance in the book was that she made the prophecy. So why is she in the movie if it's never explained she made the prophecy?) saying a few lines about Harry and Voldemort having to kill each other. Even if you like the movie better than the book, you have to admit that this was the most important moment of the story, and they did in fact ruin it. The prophecy serves not only to explain what happened in the prior stories, but also sets up what's to come. I.E. We learn that Neville will play a big role in the future (which he does). People who've never read the books thus miss out on a huge chunk of plot, especially why Voldemort chose to kill Harry. -So overall a good movie, but not spectacular. Expand

Rowling has engulfed us in. Yates is a horrible directing with the beginning scene nothing more than a child can portray. [***SPOILER**] The script and scene writers have ridiculed the book leaving out every single point exept the battle between voldemort and Potter. Within the first few minutes Potter was safe again at his poor Sirius house, this angered me with this taking over 80 pages which showed Harry confusion and anger towards his situation, Quidditch plays no further part in this movie which is also a large majority of the book. Hagrid sudden intrusion into the centre stage is not stabilised as there is little communication with Potter, Weasley and Granger showing why he wasn't there. Also this scene takes place during Quidditch is on in the book. Cho is portrayed as the traitor when it was actually Marrietta, Cho's friend who betrays harry to the ministry official, Dolores Umbridge. Cho is not shown as a very emotional person throughout the novel exept during their defensive class and their meating at Hogsmeade with Rita Skitter is also absent in the movie. With the expectation people had to viewing this film many of our expectations have been thrawted by the way this movie was shown and its less than proffesional director. I for one felt very upset with the way this movie was portrayed and this has led me to the aligations I have put foward in this text. This is no joke, nor a contest, I am just dissapointed by this performance of the world's greatest book. Expand

One was they totally glossed over how Potter and gang out into the Ministry of mysteries department. Two was his new love was never reconciled with nor included in his support at the climax of the movie. Lastly after all battles were fought won and cried over the emotional verve just seemed to wane away. Now I don't want you to get the impression this was not a outstanding movie cause it was. I am a huge Harry Potter book fan. I am one of the weirdoes that actually like Book 5 but Mr. Yates and his screenwriter trashed this adaptation. It was over edited, rushed and choppy. It failed to tell a good story. While Radcliffe's acting has improved, he is still lacking in emotional range. Is Harry a one dimensional character? Radcliffe's facial expressions are so limited it is either blank or he's yelling (with blank looking eyes). I saw Equus and it was the same. I suspect he gets critical acclaim because so many people are cashing in on his coattails. I want him to truly earn the millions he's making. Even the fabulous performances of Imelda Staunton and Alan Rickman (he can do so much with so little screen time) couldn't save this movie for me. Do me a favor Warner Bros., buy David Yates out and get another director for HBP. And Daniel, I think you are a generally cool kind but acting lessons would not hurt. Check into a drama college. It was the longest book, yet the shortest movie. The previous four movies left things out and changed some things around, but i feel they did so without compromising the integrity, plot, and accuracy of the book. But OOTP changed way too much. Some little things were only changed for the sake of changing and would have taken about thirty seconds longer to do it the correct way (a.k.a. in the movie neville finds the room of requirement by chance, when in the book harry asks dobby if he knows of a place where they can go, and dobby suggests it). And some bigger aspects of the book were also changed to fit the movie (a.k.a how Cho Chang was blamed for telling Umbridge about Dumbledore's Army, when it was really her friend Marietta who was nervous about getting caught. This is a major plot change, because in the Sixth book Harry has another thing with Cho, which according to the movie would be highly unlikely now that he thinks shes a traitor)(in the battle at the department of mysteries Lucius Malfoy never has his hands on the prophecy and Neville is the one who drops it causing it to break so no one can hear it. oh and also at that moment in the movie, Sirius punches Malfoy? I'm pretty sure he has a wand and could have done much more with a simple Stupefy!) Also things were changed that were pre-established in the previous movies (the look of Sirius' face in the fire when talking to Harry in his dorm. the look of the dementors). I feel the new director really let the die-hard harry potter fans down with this poor excuse for a harry potter movie. Expand

Ahhh... got to be the only schmuck with a subject line like that for a 'Harry Potter' movie - but think of the intent behind "Joy" and you've captured much of the feeling of the audience's reaction walking out of the latest 'Harry Potter.' Though it's madly efficient and quite often exciting, squeezing in 850 pages of text into the shortest Potter yet, less than 140 minutes, this fifth installment is decidedly more dour and grim than the previous installments. A recurring theme of the past films has been the teamwork that has made Harry, Hermoine and Ron such a formidable trio. The later two take a backseat in this story so that the depiction of Harry's melancholic internal struggle can be front and center. Thankfully, the prevalency of the book's most devious and clever creation, the fascist middle-manager Delores Umbridge, has remained intact. Imelda Staunton, her family name quite appropriate for such a niggling squat character. Gosh, how I adored the emittance of her high-pitched squeal - intended to be friendly...instead such an assault. Also, like always, the film makes grand usage of its exemplary all-star British cast - everyone getting an opportunity to interact within the rich Hogwarts universe. Especially noteworthy are watching Branagh's old flames mug it up under heavy makeup. Never dull, the film flies by... but by the end of a special effects laden climactic battle we realize how unimportant this story in the grand scheme. In effect, I felt a bit used, and my urgent desire to want more from Rowling waned. Expand

To put things simply, shoddy writing is the film's major flaw, but not the only one. Uninspired and ultimately weak (And often awkward) direction is not helped in the task of making up for a lackluster script (More interested in ripping basic ideas from the book than exploring them in any detail) by an uninspired performance by an increasingly useless lead. Radcliffe's performance is stiff and lifeless, particularly in emotional scenes, such as those where has a go at this friends. Meanwhile, Warner Brothers set design continues their desire to make the mundain extraordinary, by making the Ministry of Magic - a conceivably dull place (Being a Governmental building) perhaps more impressive that Hogwarts itself. A big no-no. The book's most important scene, one in which Dumbledore shows Harry the Prophecy and tells him "everything", is butchered in a couple of awkward and considerably less well-conceived scenes. One scene in this set is considerably awkward and difficult to watch, being as it is so clearly out of place. It seems that after the series' superb fourth chapter, things have slipped to previously unheard of lows for Harry Potter. Even strong appearances from new cast members Imelda Staunton and Evana Lynch cannot rescue this train wreck. Avoid this movie at all costs. Expand

Each of them, including I was going to write that this is the best of the HP films, but as I reflect further, I think that sentiment arises chiefly from lowered expectations brought on by how disappointing the first four movies have been. Each of them, including Order of the Phoenix, leaves me shaking my head thinking of opportunities lost. It seems like the various directors have a check list of plot points from the books that they feel must be covered, regardless of whether they work cinematically. Again, Order of the Phoenix is no exception. I wish at least one of the directors would have had the courage to try to make a great movie rather than make a film of a Harry Potter book. For a "good vs. evil" film to really work, the audience must have an opportunity to get to know and detest the villain. On a day-to-day basis, the most constant villain in Harry's life is Snape. Yet he rarely gets a line and never gets screen time without Harry. As a consequence, he never becomes anything more than a stick figure - certainly he is no where near "real" enough to hate. The same goes for Draco Malfoy. If the movies spent as much time developing the dark side of life at Hogwarts, Harry's victories at the climax of each book would be much more significant and moving to the audience. On the plus side, I thought Radcliffe's acting was much improved, Helena Bohnam Carter was a welcome addition, and the cinematography was excellent (best since Prisoner of Azkaban). Sadly, the actors playing Ron and Hermione are still terrible, and Michael Gambon completely fails in showing the wisdom, kindness, and wit that make Dumbledore such a delightful character. Expand

For mine, it was too short. Yates tried to make this a kid friendly length but in the process, rushed one of the key moments of the series in the end part. The book also failed to explain the prophesy point and the link between Harry and Voldermort which would explain a lot to people who haven't read the books. However, the movie was well acted, generally well structured and flowed well. It's humor sections and drama sections were well achieved, cinematography and editing were adequate. THe acting is the best we have seen in a Potter film, Radcliffe, Watson and Grint are all at their best along with well cast new comers of Umbridge and Luna. Gary Oldman is still a little off cast as Sirius Black but he manages well enough. My only disapointment is that the final battle is a little rushed and doesn't capture the struggle as nearly as well as the novel. As a result the last 3 books are pretty boring, longwinded, and crucially bereft of new magic and thrills. TOOTP has no central storyline, unless you think that the revelation that Voldemort is back is actually a story in itself. As a result the story is really lacking. True to the last 3 books Harry is crushingly dull - one-note whinging and feeling story for himself all the time. God help us when book 7 comes to the screen. Having a "bleak" or "dark" story doesn't make it better - just bereft of fun. The good news is that the acting from the adults is first rate. Oldman and Staunton are superb. Just a shame we can have more Thewlis, Smith, Gleeson and others. Gambon is great as usual too. The kids aren't too bad. JKR cannot write action scenes at all - they play so much better on screen than on the page. The battle scene at the end is far better than anything JKR has written. The Army practice scenes also have great effects. A better film than I feared since the book is almost unfilmably dull - top effects, good acting, snappy direction and no Quidditch! Expand

This guy is probably the worst actor on the planet despite his butt naked performance on stage to try and garner some acclaim. It was a cheap shot and it did not work apparently. So glad I didn't see that. You'd think Daniel would invest in some acting lessons but more likely his problem is deeper. He is devoid of talent. He hasn't got IT. I'm sure they lose millions because of him, so why haven't they replaced him? Nobody knows, but I'll dance in the street if they do. And while they are replacing people they should re-cast Lupin. Who the hell is that puffy-faced actor? Lupin should look thin, tattered and tragically handsome--not like a puffer fish. Tonks was nicely cast though. I've always felt that Minerva looked much younger than the actor who portrays her. Nobody has mentioned how wasted Emma Thompson's performance iwas amongst that mess of a movie. You tend to forget the highlights because the rest was so overwhelmingly depressing. The movie is a shame, but I knew it would be since I have the fake screams of Daniel from the other movies (Aaaaahhhhhhh....Aaaahhhhh....Aahh....Ah) still ringing in my head. How stupid do these movie makers think we are? Plenty--we keep going to see this trash. Expand

Cho Chang is like being bullied with Harry who kissed her violating her. Its a powerfull movie but I didn't get much out of it, it got annoying, the 3D sequence in IMAX was great, but all the movie is is training for a powerfull army to kill voldamort's, and the battle just begins at the very end. The movie felt so short, Most of the supporting roles are like taken out of the whole story. I am very dissapointed, it could have had more story. Expand

A Harry Potter film is never going to get a 10 on metacritic-its just too shallow. but based on the source material the producers and director had to work with, I don't think they could have done much of a better job. Sure, there were moments where some short scenes seemed unnecessary, but mistakes have to expected in films. And so i were rating this as a harry potter film, it would get a 10,, but, as a film, it's only a 7. Some of the reviewers need to sort that distinction out. Expand

The best Harry Potter yet! The special effects, acting and everything else. Especially the battle between Dumbledore and Voldemort was the best part. I can't wait until the next one and the last book

Lacks the quality of the previous movies in the series. The acting of the three main characters is immature and makes you want to vomit halfway through the movie.

Jumpy scenes; legions of characters introduced for seemingly no reason other than 'they were in the book', even though they contribute very little to the movie; pointless special effects scenes (how many times do we need to see Potter and his friends flying around?)... the list just goes on. Potter directors need to stop trying to wow us with special effects, because modern movies CANNOT be carried by CGI. Try inserting some flowing plot or intelligent dialouge next time, instead throwing together of this disjointed, boring, mess of a movie. I'm wondering if the critics saw a different version of this movie, because I don't understand how anyone but the most die-hard Potter fan could rate this anything higher than a 5/10 at most. Expand

yea i agree with what Ryan B. said How can this shitty movie make it in the green score level when it was probably the worst movie in the series. It was dull and boring. Way to long and worst of all there was no action at all. Terrible movie

I've never been one to deny it. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is an example of a film that acted as an interpretation and not a flat-out cut-and-paste to screen. The latter is lazy film making. This fifth Harry Potter was rife with choices, but most of them were poor choices. Characters are left underdeveloped, suspense is nowhere and--as opposed to, say, Prisoner of Azkaban--it lacks imagination and the visual verve that should define the series. One might gather that the film's largely expository parts act solely as necessary buildups to some climax and they never act on their own. A film should never, ever, be about the payoff: everything in-between matters just as much as the fireworks finish. And Rowling has a fundamental difficulty with her imagination that I cannot ignore and that I have long wanted to point out. She only plays at knowing her world, but when she hits a creative wall, she inserts some magnificent and magical plot device to move along the action and stir some tension. By that method, she leeches and manipulates us all into believing her world. She did it in Goblet of Fire with the triwizard tournament. Somehow a large maze appeared and there were other massive geographical elements that had heretofore been absent. To me, that's inept storytelling and, in fact, it cheats not only her readers, but her otherwise imaginative self. Now I can understand to an extent because people often rush her creative process along, but the effect is diminished by it and the story's credibility disintegrates evermore because of it. In Order of the Phoenix she added "the Room of Requirement," which I'll refrain from explaining in the interest of people who have yet to see the film--just take my word for it. But most importantly, the characters needed some development to make the themes more potent. The book exceeded 800 pages and clearly that complicates matters. A solution would be to break the film into two parts and release them separately. Ironically, the fifth book was my favorite in the series thus far (the seventh to be completed soon), but the adaptation was my least favorite of all. Expand

The special effects are great and it was a very fun serious and actually funny movie, reading this book helps understand some little things the non readers may not get. The movie itself centered far to much around pointless scenes that did nothing to help the plot. For example, the scene with Harry kissing that girl. The movie put atleast 80% of the important information into corny, cliche spinning news paper montages. For example, nearly half of the movie went by when they explained Umbridge (or whatever her name was) was arrested, and that Dumbledoor had been reinstated. That was not content worthy for new paper headlines. That deserved full scenes. Don't bother with the movie if you are a movie fan. You will spend the whole time pulling out huge plot holes, and shameless directing. Thanks for reading, hope this helps! Expand
